Great video. I've seen innumerable videos comparing the Max to the Bodyguard 2, and the reviewers invariably prefer the Bodyguard. But, the Bodyguard costs at least $100 more, and I like my Rugers. I think the Ruger is a better looking gun too. Next time it's on sale, I'm getting one.
I have had my LCP for 10 years. I upgraded the trigger, guide rod, spring and take down pin. I also own Glocks and love the Max trigger. One thing about my Original LCP is I can hit targets out to 20 yards. I am going to purchase a Max because I agree, it is a better pistol.
I’m so stuck on pocket pistols. I want one. But each option seems to have its shortcomings. Makes me want to get into college debt to become a firearms engineer lol. The diamondback DB9 for example. Seems perfect. Jam-o-matic. There has to be a way to make one reliable!
I personally would get a LCP. See if you even like a small gun before paying near 4 bills for one. .380 ammo is not super cheap. I initially bought a G42 and after a year and about 250 rounds, I am starting to have FTE issues. Lucky for me I had recently bought a LCP recently as well. I know carry the LCP while I troubleshoot my G42 before sending back to Glock. For me, the LCP does not shoot as bad as many make it out to be online. Sure, it's nothing like my G17 in shooting, but these LCP's are not meant to throw thousands of rounds on them.
I've had the exact opposite experience with fit and finish as you. I've had 2 different LCP Max pistols, and both were moroccos. But I've traded away honestly 3 OG LCPs for something, just to end up buying the gun back, and none have had quality issues, much better fit. The finish is better on the Max though, so you're right on that. The original LCP doesn't lock back. It doesn't have that as a feature, so that was a little weird to say it "sometimes doesn't lock back."
I sold that lcp2 to my boss. And I was going to zoo last Saturday. I borrowed it from him to carry there. So I'd be super low profile. Or as people say deep deep carry. Gave it back to him that Monday and a box of cheap ammo for training. He appreciated that. It seems like in my area 4 different places June 12th the max will be there. All 4 told me 12th yo 15th I'm got to have it. I forgot how light and wonderful the LCP2 is. Micro 9s r great but for the zoo at 91f that Lcp2 was my friend
I love my lcp! I never leave home without it. It doesn't need better sights. It will shoot servicable groups at 30ft but that's not what it's made for anyway. It's a "Get off of me" gun. Heaven forbid I ever have to use it, but if so it's probably going to be touching what I'm shooting at...

Good review with rational comparisons. Informative and to the point. Thanks
Just ordered the LCP Max, I like the upgrades that are out on it now. I have the original LCP that I modded but I only have 7 +1 with it with upgraded sights and internals. I want the 12+1 with the Max. I have a ankle holster and an a sticky pocket holster that fit my LCP with laser. I love my full size Glock 21 that can shoot 45 or 40/10mm with a barrel swap but it’s a woods or night stand sidearm. I have it suppressed with a osprey for 45acp because I don’t want to wake up the neighbors. My OG is a Beretta 92FS. I kinda have the urge to get a Glock 26 or 19 too. I have rifles, shotguns and a sniper rifle too. Guns are good 👍
I am surprised how accurate my LCP II was at closer ranges. At 10 to 15 feet all the rounds landed in a fist sized group with some key hole shots, but at 20 feet or better, forget about it!😂 I bought a leather OWB holster and carry mine everywhere with two spare mags in my front pocket everyday. At age 64, my days of lugging around my Glock 19 are over for everyday! These little pistols I find are pretty comfortable to shoot. At the range, before I know it I’ve gone through a couple of boxes of ammo without sore hands at all. I highly recommend any of them. Oh and the laser, once dialed in works very well in low light.😊
FYI the original LCP does not lock back on an empty mag so there’s nothing wrong w/yours. I did upgrade to the MAX this Spring and it is a better product, but I still carry the original model when I need the smallest, lightest weapon available to me.
I have 3 lcp pistols all the same model . One shoots so wild that you are lucky to hit a coffee can at 10 yards . One shoots ok out a little farther and more accurate . The third one is a great pistol . I can hit a coffee can at 20 yards and more . Mind you , this is our secondary pistols . My primary is px4 storm in 40 and i practice out to 100 yards , but very accurate out to 60 yards easy .
Except here's the problem with the max dude. It's a pocket gun loaded with features that make a pocket gun terrible. Pocket pistols are not supposed to have good triggers. In fact a good trigger can make your pocket pistol dangerous. There should be absolutely no sights on your pocket pistol. It's for 3 yd and in, up close personal contact. The only thing those sites do is add extra risk of snagging on your pocket. Third, the grip is far too thick to conceal the way a pocket pistol is supposed to conceal. Every time I carried the LCP Max people can definitely tell there is something in my pocket. And the weight made it far too inconvenient for most pants. It requires a belt regardless of whether or not you carry it in your pocket or in the waistband. If you ask me all of these design flaws leave the original far superior. Just my two cents. But I will add that I liked your Home defense carry scenario. That's actually a pretty good application for the LCP Max. Either way your opinion is your own and it was a good video and well done and informative
I have a small shoulder bag that I want to carry a small pistol in. Would this gun be okay for that? Or do you recommend something else? The small foot print is the biggest appeal for me
Pocket guns shouldn't have good triggers? Hard stop. Just because you have low iq standards doesn't mean those are facts. His can't hit targets with larger guns but you think a get off me gun should be garbage? Low iq.
@@mtnmotoadvThere are a lot of disadvantages to carrying off body, it's okay to do in a pinch but I wouldn't make it my main way of carry. Slower draw, higher chance of leaving it behind, almost impossible to draw if someone is trying to snag your bag, etc. With that said, if you're absolutely dedicated to carrying off body, the smallest I would go is a P365 or 43x, there are tons of advantages to having something slightly heavier and bigger, easier to control and a superior defense round (9mm). These micro 380s are best saved for pocket and summer carry.
A friend and I both purchased the LCP Max anniversary edition. We took them to the range and both guns had similar problems. The trigger would either not pull or pull and not fire. If it did fire, the slide would not return back all the way. Tried different ammo and additional mags. Called Ruger and they sent a return label so they can repair the gun. Very disappointed!
You did point at the original O G LCP from Ruger at the very end of the video... at a gun store it was hard for me to rack the slide back... in fact I could not do it... I understand that after racking it a thousand times it gets easier... SMH I definitely should think about renting one for the final decision... thank you for making this video
I’ve owned all three models since the lcp inception. The max is by far the best all around deep conceal weapon. Much more refined, more comfortable grip (accepts lcp2 hogue), fits superfly pocket holster for my original lcp, dovetail sights with front tritium, up to 12 + 1 capacity. More controllable = more rounds on target. Far fewer malfunctions (ie dropped mags). Any increase in size/weight/cost is negligible particularly considering the advantages the max offers. Retired tactical officer with 28 years experience.
Personally I prefer the original style LCP over the LCP+ or Max. If you look at the hammer position in carry mode the original LCP appears to have about a 30% cocked hammer and the trigger needs to be pulled to fully cock this hammer and then release it to fire. The LCP+ and Max appear to have the hammer cocked over 90%, Way past my comfort level on something I'm putting in my pocket that has a rudimentary safety and likely has enough stored inertia in the hammer to fire if something went awry. I think Ruger answered the feedback of the LCP long trigger pull by basically taking a pistol that was similar to a DA first shot to making it similar to a SA
I do not mind spending the money for the Max, but is it almost double the price better than the LCP? I currently EDC a GX4 and I enjoy it, but would like something smaller for certain situations. 199 vs 370 especially since we all know these are not range guns per say.
My all black lcp max has been having rust issues even if I keep up on cleaning it just a week of pocket carrying and it’s building up in the rear surations
I was looking for one of these for pocket carry. But couldnt find one. I literally just ordered a kahr p380 which has an even smaller profile i would love to see you review that one.
Ruger stands by there product if u get it from academy life time warranty I spilt coke on my ruger lcp and finish got pink rust on it and ruger sent back a brand new ruger for free no shipping or nun I sent it in through academy sports
The LCP1 in this video is a gen2....The 2008 LCP1GEN1 had a dash in serial number, very LOW snag-free sights (great for pocket conceal), and looong trigger....... The 2013 LCP1GEN2 had no dash in serial number, MEDIUM height sights, and a improved trigger. Then came the LCPCUSTOM which had no dash in serial number, different trigger, and very HIGH sights. The 2018 LCP1ANNIVERSARY model was what some consider as the ultimate LCP1, and combined the better gen2 trigger, but reverted back to the gen1 snag-free LOW sights. Then we also have the 2016 LCP2 which as you noted, was larger and wider. @@spnfirearms
When i got my lcp max the gunshop owner tried to talk me into the bodyguard and the 42 I went with the max I really like it.havent had any problems yet have about 400 rounds through it.
Can you really tell any difference between the 2 in pocket? I’ve watched this video about 100 times over the past couple days lol. I wanna buy one of these by the weekend. Leaning towards the max- but it’s $379 vs lcp $209 and for a pocket “get off me “ 6+1 sounds doable. Any advice?
@@MunkyWrench I went with the 1 myself. My number one reason for wanting one was to have it in pocket and not care that it’s there, so I went with smallest and lightest
I had gotten rid of an LCP (gen2) a while back to just go with a compact 9mm, a Taurus G3c. However, I missed the "always in the pocket" convenience of that small 380. I was going to pick up a new LCP Max but I ended up buying a new plain LCP for two reasons, the difference in size and the difference in price. Picked up two new 6-round mags so I've got 18 rounds of 380 acp available and I'm back to always carrying again. If I think that I need more than that I'll resort to a tomahawk and a good belt knife like inhabitants of this valley here in northeastern PA carried some 250 years ago. I like to read some of the local history of our local area prior to and after the American Revolution. One thing that I cannot wrap my head around is having to face the indigenous hostile inhabitants of this area with just a single shot rifle, a tomahawk and a knife. Just a little historical perspective on a 6-round mag vs a 10-round magazine!
@robertslusser6753 I carry 1 extra mag. I'm out on vaca now as I type this and it's in my pocket. Never without it . And barely remember it's there unless I think about it
I know this vid is 11 months old but i find myself in the same situation. I've had the lcp for years and it has been a loyal companion. Recently picked up the lcp max 75th anniversary edition for $299 at rural king. I've found it to be extremely tight as far as loading the mag and inserting it. My question is, will it loosen up with use (range time) ? Also, i totally agree with your assessment of both pistols. Great video & thanks. P.s. are the ruger 12 round mags garbage as most people say ?
try loading it with one less round.. so if you have the 10 round mag put in only 5.. the max has mag issues.. often times you contact ruger and they send you a new mag.. problem solved.. I sit in my office with every new one I buy and rack the slide 5000 times over the course of a week.. wears in the spring and guides without spending money on rounds.. dont pull the trigger every time.. just rack the slide.. builds up hand strength and wears in the action
@@DennisMenxce-- Wear a multi-pocket work vest, and stick your piece in one of the zippered pockets (so it can't fall out as you work), and you are good to go, with no discomfort.
It's been said that one advantage of the LCP .380 is that the long trigger pull is more likely to not result in an accidental discharge for pocket carriers. That is on selling point that I like.
I hate carrying Iwb. i can ever find a comfortable spot and it hurt to bend over if I wore it in the front or side and hurt to sit and would stick out if I wore it in the back. I tried a ton of holsters and bought new belts and pants but never could get comfortable. Finally I bought an lcp and forget I even have it on me. I even have it in my pocket just laying around the house
New out of the box my LCP max has had nothing but feed and extraction issues. Very disappointing and not trustworthy. Still waiting for Ruger to send me parts to try and fix it. If that doesn't do it, its going back to Ruger. Back to my Sig 365 that has been flawless. Is the Max worth the upgrade....? No it isn't. Not until Ruger fixes the hit and miss quality.
SPN can you please recommend me which ammo to use I got a LCP from scheels for my wife and took it to the range and it had malfunctions on every magazine but it’s a new gun if a different ammo doesn’t fix it then I’m going to sell it and get her a G42
I have yet to meet a person in real life that has a reliable lcp. I had the one with the laser and still wasn’t accurate lol. Maybe it was the sights but it jammed all the time and was super snappy. I got rid of it in a few months and would not trust my life with it.
I've had the original lcp for probably 12 or so years. I've shot around 500 rounds through it and only had one fail to feed in all that time. Glad my experience is better that the one you had. I know they had some issues when they were first introduced but I've not heard of major issues since. I admit the sights and trigger on my old one aren't great, but I've made due.
I just purchased a LCP today and went to the range. Used Winchester .380 95grain FMJ. (Flat heads) and ran through 40rounds and had a couple slide hangups. Hoping running more rounds will break it in and help with that. ? Anyone ammo specific helps the LCP anyone ?
Just picked up the LCP. I ran 50 rounds of Fiocchi 95gr and had four failures to eject. In your experience, do you have a minimum round count to expect before the LCP is broken in or a recommend ammo to use? Also, the rounds were ejecting up and over my head directly behind me. Is that normal in your experience? Two landed directly on top of my head.
IMO, the LCP Max is all you will ever need. 10 rounds of 380 accurate up to 25 yards covers you in 99.99% of situations. If any of those variables are inadequate for defense, you are probably committing murder my guy
@@theblishknovk For SHFT, a handgun is a cute accessory for what you'll actually need. For multiple enemies, getting as many shots on target as quickly as possible would be the goal so 380 would probably be better than a larger caliber. Granted, you'd probably want a larger gun which can operate a bit quicker but I'd still choose 380 for hitting multiple targets as quick as possible to stop them
@@tedjerdee1028 a bigger 380 i suppose. But not a pocket 380. Glock 17 with +p 9mm will be faster to shoot than a pocket 380. Also in shtf pistol is only secondary but still want more than a pocket gun even if secondary if its that bad. I myself carry a 380 90% of the year.

That light trigger on the max may be great at the range but the odds of accidentally firing it when drawing in an actual combat situation goes up significantly. Like a Glock, increased odds of shooting yourself.

Respect! Agreed. They are absolutely great.
😂😂😂😂
Why did you bring a gun to the zoo? In case a chimpanzee escapes? 😂
@@scotwfree in case a psyco decided to attack at a no gun zone. U do u...
the og was the keltec which was almost flat out copied by ruger with a little refinement.
Great review! I'm under the impression that I should just buy both 😂
Haha yessir! They are cheap enough. The lcp is overall just smaller so better for certain places
I like my LCP a lot! In time, I am sure I will buy a Max in time. I might even go the pawn shop route and get a used one.
Thanks
Just bought a lcp II 380 for $160 yesterday and you drop this video today lol
Haha I am actually carrying my lcp original right now. They are both great firearms and for $160 that’s a steal. Worth keeping it!
good deal
160 is a really good deal. 199 for LCP, LCP 2 299, and 370 for the Max at Academy yesterday.
Guns are good 👍
Love it! Great setups and choices. You’ll love the max. The trigger is beautiful for a pocket pistol. Respect!
I paid 299 plus tax for the 75th anniversary LCP Max . It has some improvements over the Regular LCP Max. Im happy now.
The Max defeats the purpose the LCP is made for, a true pocket pistol.
Barely bigger and 10 rounds. Go back to sleep with your junk LCP.
I really want a max considering my city is very anti gun… it would allow me to carry a lot easier
Yessir! That’s the reason for these awesome pocket pistols! Respect
I was about to comment on this and say there's another guy's channel that explains this then realized it was your channel.
I agree if you can't hit a target from 3 yards with 5 rounds you either need far more practice or not carry. 😂
What did you end up doing
@@MunkyWrench the original O G LCP
@@williamboske2771 good choice I sold my max and got the original lcp I am much happier
Ruger should take other keltecs and upgrade those too
Haha respect fair enough
I carry a smith and Wesson m&p bodyguard 380..really really enjoy it for pocket carry
I have the original LCP, LCP 2 and the LCP max. I carry one everyday, everywhere. Over 40 years of EDC.
I guess that's why the LCP's have been on sale at my local gun shop lol
Love my Kahr CW380 with MagGuts (7+1) and fiberoptic sights, but I also just ordered the 75th anniversary LCP Max.
Always the next new gun lol
I like your approach to carry.
Thanks man, respect! Thanks for watching as well
The original LCP was not designed to lock back on an empty magazine
you’re saying yours does sometimes? Lol
I have the lcp max. It’s a nice gun. I wouldn’t want to shoot hundreds of rounds at the range with it.
I do not mind spending the money for the Max, but is it almost double the price better than the LCP? I currently EDC a GX4 and I enjoy it, but would like something smaller for certain situations. 199 vs 370 especially since we all know these are not range guns per say.
I had the opposite problem my max was really sloppy frame to slide fitment felt like junk i sold the Max and kept the original LCP
My all black lcp max has been having rust issues even if I keep up on cleaning it just a week of pocket carrying and it’s building up in the rear surations
Thank you for letting us know.
I will pick up this a body gaurd and another g42 probly next year. I need to focus on upgrades and I would like the hk mp5sd by end of this year.
Just picked up the lcp max 75th anniversary edition.
I would have liked to see the reset after you pulled the trigger
I love the original I keep collecting them in diff colors they’re perfect in my opinion
I was looking for one of these for pocket carry. But couldnt find one. I literally just ordered a kahr p380 which has an even smaller profile i would love to see you review that one.
Yea the og is light i some times forget i have it when I lay down
I have the original LCP and I don’t worry about trigger pull long as it goes bang that’s all that counts . Also, my LCP has never rusted.
Ruger stands by there product if u get it from academy life time warranty I spilt coke on my ruger lcp and finish got pink rust on it and ruger sent back a brand new ruger for free no shipping or nun
I sent it in through academy sports
I just sold my LCP2 gonna upgrade to this. If I find it in stock anywhere around me. Got 200 for the LCP2.
Very nice! Respect!
Just to note: your LCP is a gen 2. The front sight is elevated. The original LCP front sights were terrible.
This is a gen 1 lcp.
Will any LCP bought in 2024 from a large retailer like Academy be the Gen 2?
I agree with everything you said. Damn right 👍🏽😁
Dude, the original LCP does not only not lock open every now and then when you empty a magazine, It doesn't lock open at all. It wasn't designed to.
There are multiple generations of the original.
@@spnfirearms Only two that I know of and they don't lock open after the last shot. The LCP II does.
When i got my lcp max the gunshop owner tried to talk me into the bodyguard and the 42 I went with the max I really like it.havent had any problems yet have about 400 rounds through it.
The original LCP is not supposed to lock back on an empty mag.
LCP custom after owning and shooting all of them is my choice
What would be a good budget 380 ammo for the max?
I'll take the OG everyday. Small, light and not a bad trigger. Runs all ammo.

Any advice?
what did you choose.. I sold my max and got the lcp 1.. I am much happier now
@@MunkyWrench I went with the 1 myself.
And barely remember it's there unless I think about it
@MunkyWrench I want the lcp 1 and ur comment is what I wanted to hear appreciate it,I want something small enough to carry in my pocket
do you have a Ruger LCP Max vs Ruger LCP 2?? I looked for one but couldn't find one.
I sit in my office with every new one I buy and rack the slide 5000 times over the course of a week.. wears in the spring and guides without spending money on rounds.. dont pull the trigger every time.. just rack the slide.. builds up hand strength and wears in the action
is pocket carry safe? Im new to firearms and Id love an alternative to IWB holster
Yes it is. Get a Vedder pocket holster and you are all good! I pocket carry 60 hours per week at work as a new construction plumber
@@spnfirearms lol perfect example I’m a service hvac tech. That’s great news cause my iwb tier 1 really is too difficult to work with
@@DennisMenxce-- Wear a multi-pocket work vest, and stick your piece in one of the zippered pockets (so it can't fall out as you work), and you are good to go, with no discomfort.
Can the slides be interchangeable? And function properly?
I admit the sights and trigger on my old one aren't great, but I've made due.
never had a hang up in my lcp!
How many rounds did you fire before you felt comfortable with its reliability? I would imagine my use will be like yours@@jaymarx3146
Why not send to Ruger?
Get rid of it bro it’s not worth it. Had one and it was a jammer for sure
Shoot it gangsta style (at an angle).
Mine jammed (ftf) but after I polished the feed ramp and learned to grip it firmly it doesn't jam any more.
I probably run almost five hundred rounds through mine. Had probably a half a dozen failures.
What ammo did you guys run that had less jams etc ? Also running 50+ rounds help break these little suckers in ?
Will the laser for the LCP fit the LCP max?
I carry 2 LCP’s one in each pocket. You never know
And 2 of the North American Arms .22 LR revolvers in your 2 back pockets..... 😂

The original LCP doesn't lock back on last round.
IMO, the LCP Max is all you will ever need. 10 rounds of 380 accurate up to 25 yards covers you in 99.99% of situations. If any of those variables are inadequate for defense, you are probably committing murder my guy
Until shtf or multiple enemies.
