It's probably because her dishes are more traditional since she's older. Her generation might not have used the exact same spices as the younger generations do today, as well as deep-frying is a fairly new thing compared to the traditional method which is just boiling the meat.

They remind me so much of my own aunties fighting over who cooked the best. We always competing with one another while the rest of us just kept on eating because they were both excellent cooks. Both have passed on now, miss them very so much.
