Wasn't expecting the brown sofa to make an appearance. Neat.
I know, right!
really? the instant I heard Ashens I knew it had to show up. that couch is his wife.
While watching this video I suddenly had a craving for canned beef tongue!
For me it was the other way around, I didn't noticed it was Ashens until I saw the sofa xD

that's honestly a really interesting premise/scenario.

@@forgetivestuff8451 yes, but why are you telling *me* this?
@@Hide_Me Sorry, I did not mean to offend you by talking to you.
Wow, the plot of this game looks surprisingly solid. Also, the mechanic of oxygen supply is also very interesting to add that extra bit of urgency and resource management to the game. It is a shame this game was never released in the west and never had any sequels.
Yeah, while I'm not personally in love with underwater facilities as a whole (maybe if the aesthetic is less grungy and more sci-fi), the game itself sounds like it has a pretty firm foundation.
It was released in the West, but only in PAL regions (and even then, in absurdly small quantities, hence why its EXTREMELY expensive).
@Starscream91 It's not scary either way, but sure, whatever.
@Starscream91I was "being an ass" because I wasn't making an argument for it to be scarier, I was stating how I don't find it *interesting* and you're derailing the discussion. Resident Evil 1 isn't scary by today's standards to begin with, I only ever found it scary when I was a _child._ Before I grew up. So who cares if this one was any scarier? If the setting is boring, it doesn't matter if it's scary enough.
But I'm speaking from a future perspective. For the time it was mostly adequate. It just came too late for the company.
Until the game throws copious amounts of ammo, grenades, healing kits (important to not mistake them for sprays), and that the protagonist is a baby.
I remember when Retsuprae did a series on this game. The line where the commander said he made one little mistake and was transferred to this hellhole for accidentally launching missiles at a civilian ship is one of my favorites.

I wonder if "Deep Fear" is connected in any way to the PS2 game "Cold Fear", where you fight zombies out on the ocean on a cargo ship.
I was thinking the same exact thing.
Is it a Sega game?
Just checked its a darkworks title published by ubisoft so probably not.
The connection is that they both have the word “fear” in the title.
@@timmorris6456people just need 1 word to draw an outlandish conclusion
I was thinking "man this guy sounds familiar" and then I saw the couch and thought "ah it's Ashens" had to check the title to be sure.

that shooting /oxygen conservation mechanic reminded me of the originally proposed version of bioshock

@Tidder T the original ideas seem like an evolution of systemshock 1 and this obscure game , so most likely not
@Tidder T there is a small posibility that it may have been inspired by deep fear , but none at all that it was trying to rip it off
So no one's commenting the fact your character's name is John Mayer?
Singing his hit song "Your underwater facility is a wonderland"
That's exactly why I came into the comment section 🤣
@@mitsuninja PERFECT!
The English Dub is exactly why I wanna play this game now. I bet I'll piss myself with laughter.
There are longplays of it as well as a funny video series done by Retsupurae on RUclips that I'd recommend.
Definitely check out Retsupurae's long play of the game
@@TheNegronomicon Watching it right now boyz!

lmao, incredible!
For one last Epic Battle!
... Killer Queen has already touched that pen!.....
2:34 - If this game was more well-known that guy side-stepping would be a meme by now
The best part is how real of a reaction that is to what's happening in the game too though.
Me: Hey... this game is actually kind of interesting with a fun, different enviroment, unique oxygen mechanics, decent plot, and gameplay... I wonder why this isn't considered an old "gem"..
**listens to voice acting**
...... Oh.
Still a great game, The Abyss meets Resident Evil, that needs a Remake!
@Brupcat yeah but these not the same as Deep Fear, I have played Carrier for the Dreamcast too and that the only game that comes near at this game. Sad many games lost in minds with the time but still impressive games and playable.
SEGA should remake this for next-gen console. Seems a great game with full 3D & higher graphics.
Deep Fear Kiwami. No? Okay..
9:15 Who's that Pokemon!?

It's me, Clefairy.
Skywalker...!?
...Did I stutter?
To be honest, this is more like a resident evil mash up with dino crisis and parasite eve, not just resident evil only.
In other words, my wet dream
If this was in the PS1 this would've been popular worldwide. Moving while aiming was never done before in tank control shooter back then or it must've been rare. And the story and gameplay is interesting.
ps2 had Cold Fear...
Best lines are:
“Ki- Kill me please!; ...WHAT”
“OOOooh! What am I going to deuuu!”
Also,"...Left tenant..."
9:20 SEGA predicted The Rise of Skywalker. That's Palpatine!
That's not the games dialogue, that's just the skit that DYKG does with the patreon supporters names.
I wouldn't mind if Sega tried to remake this game like Capcom did with RE2
Same
@Ryu i know, i saw it too & is amazing.
9:16 "It's me, Clefairy."
SonOfMael 2: Draconic Boogaloo damn Clefairy you look like shit 🌝
Great thing we can rely on your SHSL hearing :D
@@IgikoPop Doing the poké-powder again i see.
Quick! Throw your pokeball at him!
Who gave that Pokemon cigarettes?
Its always special to play an horror game made by Sega that was directed by Rieko Kodama, one of the first woman working in major industry titles and created Skies of Arcadia and Phantasy Star games and much more.
I kind of want someone to compile all of the established lore from the patreon thanks sections into some absurd story about all of the people

I think this game is CRIMINALLY underrated. the concepts remind me of the film Leviathan, it featured moving and shooting, it had so very emotional moments, AND IT HAD AN ADORABLE BULLDOG NAMED RAMBO!!! WHAT MORE CAN YOU ASK FOR!? I wished this game was remade.:D
Man, this game looks interesting. I kind of wish it would get some kind of re-release.
Professor Icepick emulate it
I always think man there are no more old games that i dont know about and thankfully videos like these always prove me wrong.
Now this is a game that needs a proper remake, even if they butcher it, it wouldn't make much difference since the original was in poor quality to begin with. Great concept and that is what matters.
DjGodaryD86 I agree it would be cool to see a modern take on it.
Might be like dead space
I REALLY like the backstory for this game! Refreshing after years of "military serum experiment something something".
"It's me Clefairy" WAIT WHAT?!
Clefairy, this is John Mayer--have you heard my new single? COME IN, CLEFAIRY! *HAVE YOU CHECKED MY SOUNDCLOUD? CLEFAIRY!*
Retsupurae provided commentary on the entire game, and is worthy of watching from beginning to end.
Dude, I love Extermination. One of the great underrated PS2 horror gems, such a weird game.
Seeing games like that takes me back...
Snacks on the table playing games like Galerians and Parasite eve after midnight without the distractions of the internet. Seems like the night stretches longer.
Actually Resident Evil 2 on the N64 has analog controls. Angel studios made that possible along with their compression Fmv tech.
What you doing over here, you know you’re not allowed out until you finish your ox tongue!!
Do you wanna kill the bloke?
Sooooo...RE then ran with a similar premise and went on to make RE:Revelations. Nice.
Glad to see a retsupurae game here. Diabetus and Slowbeef would be proud.
Elevators galore
I remember seeing photos of this game in a magazine. Was a huge fan of RE and wanted to play deep fear. Unfortunately I never got to play it with no US release. I was seriously considering importing the game.
Watch Deep Fear Shitstorm episode, VA and animations in this game are comedy goldmines.
One resident evil-clone I liked back in the day was Cold Fear. being stuck in one ship in a heavy storm has this appeal that fits in the horror genre
There are soo many games that would make millions if they decided to remake them...
Have a big soft spot for this old survival horror games, need to play them all!
If Sega ever does a Sega Saturn mini this game needs to be on there!
Lmao at how he picks up the Gun at 10:12 and then that voice acting! "Don´t come any closerrrrr" That voice and that face in that cutscene when he says it lmao!
I'm pretty sure this game was released in '98 and it in fact released in Europe first June, their is a review of this game from a magazine dated August 1998, so the game definitely released in 1998 and not '99
I think this game would be a prefect game for the Sega Ages re-releases for the Switch make it happen M2!
I would buy it, I always wanted to play this
Ken narville I don’t know it might get released in Japan. The Saturn sold more then the n64 there
It kind of reminds of an 80's horror movie called Leviathan. It has the isolation bit going for it. Several thousand feet underwater definitely means that if shit goes sideways you are on your own, plus you can't exactly just swim out of there.
You nearly burned me with hot tea @6:25 Dub acting!
Got to clean my laptop now... Thanks dude
Man, as a fan of Extermination I'd have loved to have gotten to play this. It's also pretty remenicent of Cold Fear, which itself was a Resident Evil 4 clone.
Gaignun Lucid dude I haven’t heard anyone mention cold fear in a really long time I completely forgot about that game. Me and my dad loved that game
A lot of people overlooked it due to how heavily it copied RE4, which is really unfortunate because the game did a lot of really cool original stuff.
didn't realise it was the last release, just checked ebay, my copy is worth £350!!!
No reason in selling it...
For those wondering £350 is US$2.45
@@JohnDoe-oy1xd haha I think you missed a couple of zeros. I ain't no collector. $500 is better in my collection than this awful game!
@@JohnDoe-oy1xd £350 is 441.70 dollars not 2.45 you libtard
@@PaperMario i was kidding. And "libtard"? Really dude? What're you, 5?
I was thinking "holy smokes, those are TERRIBLE voice actors." Then I realized that was just a DYKG overdub...
Haha it’s even worse in the game
First you eat outdated tongues and now you're in a DYKG video, you're doing well Stuart!
I half way expect asking him: "... in experiment which involved mutating a chimpanzee" *But what about that chimpanzee's aftertaste, Stuart?*
It's eerie, honestly
2:33 I just fucking love this guys reaction to seeing this monstrous abomination.
Fitting having Ashens talk about some random game nobody heard about
That last bit had me rolling, did I hear him say something about Skywalker and shorts?
Deep Fear is the state I'd be in if I found out you guys stopped making videos
Christopher Moon I’ll admit I may have been a bit harsh on you in recent times and I honestly feel like a massive idiot. Really sorry I let my actions get the better of me.
@@TheMarioManiac ?
So, you could say they have something in... Kamen.
I still have my boxed copy of Deep Fear from launch... The security door segment near the end was BRUTAL... Great game though!!!
The dubbing in Deep Fear is still better than the last Zelda DYKG.
S-NES.
Don't know what y'all have, found it perfect
Wow! Never expected to hear Ashens on a DYKG video!
They share an office along with Nostalgia Nerd.
I own the PAL version of Deep Fear, nice to see it getting some exposure, but that might make it become ever rarer and raise more in price, I'm thankful I bought it years ago
The scariest thing I just saw in this video was that PlayStation laying directly on the carpet!
The only reason I'm aware this game exists is because of Segata Sanshiro
love RegionLocked videos, I find it neat & interesting to see games that never made it to the U.S.
Might have to check this out. Great video, gang.
Gang, gang
Lost oportunity to have the Retsupurae duo to do this video, because of that magical collection of videos.
I remember seeing screenshots for this in a gaming magazine back in the day. Always wanted to play it.
Ashens on did you know gaming?! You make my day!
Doooooood yeth!!! Ashens ftw
I heard his voice before reading the full title thinking "He sounds like Ashen". lol
Oh heck, I love finding out about little known survival horror games. I'm not really into the genre as much as I was in college, but it still makes me gleeful to hear about these oddball games for the first time.
Thank you for this! I felt like I was the only one who even played/owned this. No one I've ever talked to has even heard of this game.
Still got it sitting in a box somewhere with my other Saturn games.
Everyone was still on Nintendo's dick to be bothered with other console's games
Not mentioned in video, Kenji Kawaii did the soundtrack to this game and it's excellent.
This is a really good video, never heard of this game before. Thank you.
It’s like “The Thing” underwater. Not 100% the same but similar
Even without the Saturn's 3D controller, it sounds like Deep Fear controlled better than the PS1 Resident Evils did. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
Also, I was certainly not expecting Ashens to show up on this channel, though I probably should have given that both he and DYKG both operate in and around Norwich IIRC. Plus I think he gave an old mock-up copy of the game Explosion Royale to the Unseen64 crew, after first reviewing it on his channel.
Also also, congrats on getting a copy of Deep Fear, Stuart! Must've cost you quite a hefty little sum, considering its rarity.
I know the specific year was not given for the analog control in Resident Evil, but that control scheme was available for the N64 port of Resident Evil 2 first, not the GameCube games.
Ya'll got the absolute legend for this. Instantly one of the best DYKG episodes
Does u English.
I've never heard of this game, but man I would like for it to get a remake.
I had no idea Extermination was meant to be a sequel to this game...I still have that on PS2. That's pretty awesome.
The core idea is solid. If this game got the re2 remake treatment it would do well in the current market.
Woooo that sounds like such a good idea....maybe you could pitch it to sega?? Lol I'm sure they will totally do it based on the RE2 remake! ....je another resident evil idea haha
I remember toward the end of the Sega Saturn's life here in the US, Electronics Boutique (now Gamestop in the US) carried Japanese Saturn titles, including Deep Fear. Granted, you either had to have a modded US Saturn or (if it was a single disc) a 6-in-1 cart to play them. Or an original Japanese Saturn, of course. I had mine modded since most of the best games never left Japan anyway. Still plays great to this day!
Wow didn’t know this existed. I need to play this
Ken narville I’ll look around at garage sales and thrift shops
Had I not read the title i wouldn't have figured out Ashens was narrating; he sounds so calm here
Just placed a bid on a Japanese copy of this game. I absolutely must stream this monstrosity!
A perfect example of a game that needs to be remade. Take something that was bad or mediocre and turn it into something good.
Actually about the analog movement option instead of tank controls, the N64 version of RE2 had that as well. So it didn't take several years for RE to have that option technically.
I recently played this for a video; I knew nothing about it. I was a PlayStation kid at the time, but this was totally up my alley. What a weird little game.
Almost cried when I heard Stuart's voice. Never imagined we'd get to take a trip to the brown sofa on Region Locked.
This is why I always carry a pen.
I REALLY like his drawings of the monsters. PRETTY DAMN GREAT!!
Thank you for bringing up this Amazing Masterpiece of Survival Horror! S E G A!!!
samghost13 blue stinger was amazing as well and under rated
We almost had John Mayor in the not-Resident Evil game!
What a shame, he looks hot. 👌
Imagine if they had a hot female protagonist too, tho??
2:32 - 2:35
Well, bout time for me to be hitting the old dusty trail
Seems like a game I'd definitely have bought if it was released in the US.
Should have made a joke about the main character being named John Mayer, like his body is a wonderland or something.
If Hideki Kamiya from Platinum Games gain permission from SEGA to remake Deep Fear, it would be an awesome game (Might make a series from it).
Holy shit, Ashens is excellent fit for narration on region locked, it's spot on perfect.
Deep Fear was and is a really nice game and i hope Sega will give us a remake. Please! Sega! Please!
Thank you i will play it on my OG Saturn! Good idea! I have both JP and PAL
Hadn't read the title and took me until seeing the Brown Sofa to realize Ashens was doing the narration for this episode
Thought there was something odd with that last part. I was like, "Wait, isn't the hero of the game an American? Oh, its just... I'm a dumb ass."
They got me at the end with the names. Hahaha
