    You'd think with how much cooperation and teamwork played a part in Sweet Home that STARS wouldn't try to split up at every moment possible in Resident Evil (obviously there was sabotage involved and you were suppose to be vulnerable but still).

    • @sofija1996
      @sofija1996 6 лет назад +7

      Steven Higgins Resident Evil's combat and puzzle-solving were designed differently to Sweet Home's, so I don't think a party system would have worked in RE.

    • @ShigKirby
      @ShigKirby 6 лет назад +3

      Whining Ylthin Yeah as a game it wouldn't have made much sense but I'm sure it would have been easier if they were able to destroy every zombie and BOW in their path together.

    • @Solibrae
      @Solibrae 6 лет назад +6

      This was probably some of the inspiration behind being able to have Rebecca and Billy together in a team in Resident Evil 0. That game had the ability to drop items anywhere and have them stay there too.

    • @ShigKirby
      @ShigKirby 6 лет назад +4

      Solibrae Yeah I enjoyed being able to work together in 0. Made for some interesting puzzles and combat scenarios. Dropping items was nice but I also ended up making the main hall a hoarder's base of operation like an item box.

    • @Seriona1
      @Seriona1 6 лет назад +7

      The problem with the whole STARS story with Resident Evil is because it was a survival horror game, you had to ditch logic for gameplay. STARS is Raccoon City's version of SWAT and with Bravo going MIA, you'd think Alpha being back up from street cops would be fully armed and hot.

    There's an updated fan translation that was released in 2017 that overcomes some of the limits of the Gaijin translation (like Taguchi is named Taguchi instead of Taro, along with some grammar fixes and adding back in some things that got lost in the original translation, like the Amulet) along with using a more readable font. I suggest checking it out.

    You mention the English translation from Gaijin Productions and Suicidal Translations, but you didn't mention the new translation released earlier this year by TheSiege and JMN. It's a much more faithful, accurate translation that allows English speakers to fully play and complete the game. The original translation had some issues that made it almost impossible for an English player to get past a certain point without consulting a guide.

The actual movie have released it's rental video and LD after the movie's released, but been sued by the creators that those were actually recorded illegally without copyright permission. Due to that all videos and LD were later confiscated and destroyed, which also resulted to not releasing its DVD and BD version either. But you can sitll watch the film through RUclips, if you can find it...

      @zoniken 6 лет назад

      The actual video that was illegally copied seemed to have been purchased by many buyers before it got confiscated and destroyed by authorities, and can be purchased through Amazon.co.jp for $48. I'm not quite sure fully about it, but there seem to be a DVD version at some site called TwisteDanger selling for £9.99, but I wouldn't rely on having a trust upon purchasing it because it might be ported from the illegally copied product as the DVD might be pirated.
      And by the way, hence the game contains multiple endings whether how many survived in the end, 2 out of 5 died in the actual movie in a gruesome way, who are Taguchi and Asuka. Sadly, they were never mentioned by others after their death...

    My theory to why this game never left Japan; the RPG genre was not considered popular enough internationally. Sure the "family friendly" image Nintendo was so strict about back then as well as this game's movie tie-in may be strong reasons themselves, but think about it; think about how many Japan exclusive RPGs were released during the late 80's and early 90's to both the Famicom and Super Famicom. A prime example being Final Fantasy 2, 3 and 5.

    Funny that Kurosawa doesn't like his film Sweet Home. I have a book on J-Horror that mentions it and I think it was creative control issues. I think it's a great movie, it has a Spielberg type vibe to it. Reminds of The Goonies and Poltergeist. Kinda slap stick comedy at times but with some great practical effects and genuine moments of horror.

      Riz2336 Yes, it is a very tough game. The mansion is huge, there is no map system, the healing potions are limited and the random battles (not to mention the death traps) become more frequent as you progress into the game. Nevertheless, it is an awesome game!

    Before I played this (one of the few NES RPGs that didn't annoy me), I wasn't aware Capcom had even gotten involved in RPGs in the 8-bit era. Very disappointing this didn't have an international release.

    In Japan anyone could make games for the Famicom since it didn't have a lockout chip, that's why Kitano's Challenge can exist.

  • @Montassar1992

    Actually you got something wrong, the game was indeed considered for an official American release on the NES (as "Sweet Home", no less) and its name popped up in various magazines at the time as one of Capcom's upcoming US releases.
    The licensing isn't the problem most likely (since Shatterhand and Journey to Silius exist) but the violence probably killed that release.

      Could you please provide sources for which magazines wrote about an international release? Also, please remember that just because other licensed games were published internationally doesn't mean that they kept their original plots, characters and themes. This game is heavily built upon the story of the film and has no means of being altered to remove that connection. The film's original creator worked on the project, and it's unlikely he would want the game that promotes his movie to be shipped off removing his entire input on the project.

      Two points likely made the difference in the "no localization" decision. Nearly all the dismemberment scenes (especially of Ichiro!) would have to be revamped, resulting in a lot of additional work. Also, censors would have wrecked many plot-centric components (such as a woman murdering infants), requiring rewrites.

    • @Montassar1992
      @Montassar1992 6 лет назад

      It's not like games with far more controversial content didn't make it (Guevara - renamed Guerilla Wars, Karnov, Friday the 13th, Bionic Commando, and so on), the common solution back then would be just to black out all death scenes completely and use vague language.
      But I guess it's either Capcom not bothering with this for a late NES release (considering they didn't even care about their own Mega Man 6 release and NoA had to pick it up for them), the creative team at Japan not being impressed with Nintendo's cert demands, or NoA's upper management taking a quick look at the game before it was even presented to cert and preemptively issuing it a blanket veto before Capcom even tried.
      Funny that years later, Shinji Mikami would make Resident Evil ports to Nintendo systems to protest SCEA's pressure to make the game forego 2D prerendered graphics as per their anti 2D stance at the time.

    • @chriskallen1
      @chriskallen1 6 лет назад +1

      Yeah; unless the staff is interviewed, who knows the full spectrum of reasons. If there's any localization decision which is mind-blowing, it's the 8-bit Strider Hiryu game. Released internationally but NOT in Japan. Still puzzling that one out.

    • @Montassar1992
      @Montassar1992 6 лет назад

      That one is easy, the Japanese release was made first and was on track for release but got cancelled while the overseas versions made it somehow. It happens more often than you'd think at first glance.
      Monster Party (NES)
      Super Punch Out (SNES, salvaged as a NP release in 1999)
      Go Go Cosmo Cops (DS)
      CIMA (GBA), until a different publisher picked it 2 years later
      Advance Wars: first GBA game and last DS one
      Game and Watch Gallery 4: never properly released in JP till the Wii VC
      Kid Icarus 2 (GB)
      And it happened with a ton of licensed games made by Japanese developers, that understandably are not always able to secure those rights in Japan as well - Darkwing Duck (NES, Capcom), The Adventures of Batman and Robin (SNES, Konami), Shaman King Master of Spirits (GBA, Konami)... Or they get a very late release, like SNES Animaniacs.
      The weird thing about Strider Hiryu NES is that it was meant to be a licensed game based on the manga and **promoting** it, not a legit Strider game. It would have made more sense if the game was Japan exclusive instead. Maybe they realized it was a bad look for the game franchise and cancelled it, but the US branch still wanted it (and considering Strider 2, they weren't that worried about the IP image) - or they wanted to cut their losses and fill an empty release quarter.

    It is weird to think that this came from the same company that made the Breath of Fire franchise. Despite both being RPGs, they are nothing alike!
