  • Its been a while since I did a review, but the Saturn is full of amazing possibilities. One of these is the lesser known RE clone, Deep Fear. Is it worth the scare? Or do its jumps lack power?

Man, I love this game. Incredible soundtrack and atmosphere. The air gimmick wasn't even as bad as I thought it will be. Usually there's plenty of air around. But it still kinda adds to the atmosphere, imho. And lol the voice overs. Absolute classic!

    P good review.
Now I’m a huge RE fan and I do enjoy games of similar types like Parasite eve, but I never got the chance to play it despite it being on the saturn which is a system I really like.
Kenji kawai is definitely a big factor in me wanting to play the game, since he’s done music for stuff like Patlabor, Gundam 00 and devilman,
Wasn’t aware the creature designer for kabuto did the monster designs for it, but that’s kinda neat. It kinda reminds me of how onimusha had keita amemiya, the creator of garo, doing designs for the games, which were pretty rockin.

It's these little factors that make me appreciate titles like these. This will ALWAYS be a hidden gem in my book

I’d say emulating the UK version on OpenEmu with an official Sega Saturn controller (supporting modern Sega) is the best way to play this gem.

For sure when it comes to some games emu does work well. Especially with how it can be tough to play some of these titles.

i think this one could work with a well made reboot like the RE2 one

I do see where you are getting at and as much as I would like to, the difference between this and RE2 is solely fanbase. RE2 had hype behind it for years till it was finished.
This title more or less is largely unknown and probably will stay that way

Man, I forgot that Kenji Kawai composed this score. Sounds so bloody good. As for why we forgot about it? It’s one of many Sega Saturn game that didn’t come out in the states, and didn’t get a sequel. (Doesn’t hell that Sega has so many more well known IP’s that’s are also left in the dust).

Hey, as a Sega fan who was buying my own game systems and games back then the answer is VERY simple as to why SEGA's Deep Fear Sega Saturn game "seemed" to be forgotten.
Number 1 reason lies with the management staff at Sega of America during the entire 1990s decade... they and they alone are the SOLE reason why this game was forgotten.
It was the common practice by Sega of America's management staff who had the power to SUPPORT the Sega fanbase to basically REJECT, PASS OR BLOCK many of the games that were hardcore coded and created by the parent company in Japan named SEGA Enterprises LTD who HIRED and actually put the money to lay the foundation for Sega of America to exist since 1986 for the purpose of marketing, distribution, public relations, consumer support, etc or basically all the SAME THINGS that Nintendo headquarters in Japan did to create Nintendo of America.
Now Nintendo of America was never "perfect" but their actual efforts compared to "Sega of America" speaks volumes...
Basically if we swapped the staff inside 1990's Sega of America with Nintendo of America... the entire history of videogames would have been dramatically different and we would have been seeing sad videos of fans remembering the Nintendo company of the 90s while wondering why they went bankrupt along with certain fans blaming Nintendo headquarters Japan... instead it's Sega.
Bernie Stolar himself made a lot of decisions that were not only downright stupid but horrible AGAINST the Sega brand and the guy he replaced was worse hands down.
How can Sega Enterprises LTD's in Japan make any progress with Sega MegaDrive/MegaCD original software when "Sega of America" was constantly changing the image of "Sega" to suit their needs and agendas... how can we as Sega owners, years before 1994 get any fan support when we are not and instead we relied on the multi platform gamer magazines because Sega of America's management staff did not care nor want to bother... but if you owned a Nintendo system, you were supported 101% by Nintendo of America and technically by Sega of America with their lack of it.
By 1994, Sega of America DID NOT want to support the next generation of the Sega Saturn, instead they created the 32X and only claimed that addon as the future of Sega even though WE and I am speaking for most of us who had jobs and knew what a spade looked like or what a WEASEL looked like, simply did not buy that... we waited for the Sega Saturn only for Sega of America to once again create their own gamepad design and shove it down our throats along with Bug! (the true reason why Knuckles Chaotix was a 32X exclusive) which many of us did not buy because it was shovelware.
Since you never knew how it was, I am telling you who were children and unware... by 1996 we still had a lack of support from Sega of America that only got worse in 1997... the Sega Saturn was never "bad hardware" you can clearly see how successful it was in Japan... it was sabotaged by SoA... and further by 1998 despite it actually being common knowledge that Deep Fear was coming out in Japan, here in the U.S.A., Sega of America management staff remained silent...
I can say that some gamer magazines did complain about Deep Fear, because they had a tendence to act like fanboys and make the Saturn versions look bad, then some of those gamer magazines were eating their words with the 1MB and 4MB RAM Cartridge 2d games that we never got... so Sega of America chose to not support us which was typical of that 1990s subsidiary branch's treasonous actions.
