Brit here but I do know a bit about the RICO law as it's popped up often enough in shows/movies. It's the "racketeer influenced and corrupt organisations act". It can apply to many things, it's like a panacea law you guys made to pin down slippery bad actors be it in legit organisations or criminal ones.
Long story short, it basically allows the government to go after the higher ups and suspected / known leaders of organisations for the crimes of their subordinates. As with any law, there's a lot more to it than that, but in terms of how it affected the crime families of the USA, this was the major issue. Protected leaders, far away from direct linked evidence to crimes were now not protected from prosecution. It was one of the big killers of the crime family era alongside forensic evidence technology improving and proving income and evading tax becoming more difficult for them to pull off.
