However, Butcher and Homelander? That was the fight that should’ve broke the camel’s back (Homelander in this instance), since both had very similar powers. But even then it felt a little underwhelming, tho it was still satisfying to see Homelander scared of someone for a change.
@@lastone032085 Not just Homelander, just the world in general throughout the entire comics he dates a woman in the company and teaches her and rises her up the ranks just so when the company fell she'd be the one to recieve the blame and the punishment and felt no remorse for what he did to her
The irony of Edgar's decsion with starlight is that it probably would have worked out amazingly; She would have gone a long way towards cleaning house with heroes so that they actually have some sense of responsibility and vought would have been legitimized via those efforts. Fucking everyone would have won. But because Homelander was so insanely insecure and petty it all got fucked to oblivion.
I think that it’s actually a part of a plan.We see early in the season that he wants out of the company and wants to sell V24 to the military. He knows that Homelander would try and get him kicked out after making Starlight co-captain .He used Victoria to get to Stan,he threatened to reveal that she was a supe after finding documents outing her. I’m sure he said he easily found them,Jesus Stan,it’s like you actually want him…to…find.I think Stan had actually planned with Victoria to get him ousted from Vought and put Homelander in charge.Homelander said that he would go on a rampage if the public hate him and he was told that there’s no one to save his image if (when) he fucks up. So if Homelander’s serious about the rampage that means the government are gonna have to find a way to defeat an unkillable man. What can they use against him? Maybe a drug which allows a person to get superpowers for 24 hours? Hell,Edgar might even find a way to cover up his tracks by saying it was just trickery by Homelander, therefore allowing him to regain control of Vought
@@darknorman2914 This is pretty much how things go in the comics; The head of vought understood it was only a matter of time before the entire situation with ssuperheroes fell apart and ultimately sets up a contingency plan for dealing with the aftermath (it's even unclear whether or not he's still heading vought or not).
@@darknorman2914 not to mention the ending of season 3, im sure edgar knew homelander would kill in public, and that it would end the way it did, plus with starlight dividing voughts fanbase and starting a civil war essentially, homelander is losing his grip on everything he started with in season 1 and now he has finally lost it.
If you guys pay close attention to how Edgar uses his words (meaning, the words he uses when talking to Homelander and the order he uses them in) you can understand how he's able to control Homelander. It's not solely Edgar not being afraid of Homelander but it's essentially understanding his true nature...
Precisely. People think he simply verbally attacks HL all the time but that’s not true. He chooses his words very cl carefully and craftily to put HL on edge but not make him snap completely, he also knew to leave the room during that scene in season 3.
Exactly; he conveys an air of indifference and uses his words like scalpels to keep him begging for attention/approval because he knows that Homelander's insecurities are the only means he has of influencing him.
And he doesn't even swear, He tries his best not to let his ego break him And the only one who actually found his weak point was Butcher who actually not just managed to manipulate him into accepting the deal but also managed to fool both Edgar and Homelander at the same time (Making Homelander turn against Vought for hiding Ryan even if Butcher took him) It would've went well if Storm hasn't interrupted
The only one who sees him for who he really is. He’s a prisoner to the same humans he loathes.their hate/love validates his existence. It’s probably one of the many reasons why Stan doesn’t respect him.
8:07 The fact that this man is responsible for creating the closet thing to Lucifer into their world yet got this much balls to talk down to/on him…yeah this dude got some serious Black Air Force energy
In their first argument back in S2, I though Stan was more relying on the need of homelander for people´s worship and how his public image fullfilñs that, but now I realize that his lack of fear comes simply due to homelander´s fragile ego
The best part is that Homelander knows Stan isn't simply putting on a brave face. He can sense peoples heart beats and blood pressure. He knows for a fact that Edgar is not even slightly scared of him.
It's because Stan understands how the system works. You really get a feel for him in the deal Butcher makes with him at the table. One of the few people Stan allows himself to be totally honest in front of, if only briefly. Stormfront *does* piss him off, but he signed off on her because he had to prioritize Vought's image above his own personal feelings. He knows that he is beholden to investors, he knows there is always a bigger fish in the sea. It's why he is able to mock Homelander so openly - he understands his role in the system and plays it to perfection. Homelander thinks he's above the system - when he isn't. And that's why Stan respects Butcher more than he ever did Homelander. Because Butcher saw how the system worked and simply removed himself from it. And it's why that last bit of dialogue between Stan and Homelander in S3 is so great. Because not only will Homelander have nobody left to clean up his mess, but he will also have to start answering to the same people Stan did. And we already know from his fragile ego and immense insecurity that Homelander will fail at running Vought. Stan, the former CEO of a billion dollar company, gets a golden parachute like all other CEOs (or he can simply choose to retire and work behind the scenes). Homelander, meanwhile, is now in a position even more open to scrutiny.
“You see Starlight, the real power is not this, the real power is the ability to make people do what you want” One of the best lines ever by Stan Edgar
What's normal depends on your age and activity level but, generally, a resting heart rate of 60 to 80 beats per minute (BPM) is considered to be in the normal range. This is what Homelander was refering to in the last scene! He can hear Stan's heartbeat and he's impress by it, Stan doesn't flinch one bit.
@@bigdojacoom8999 Yeah. 40bpm is normal for me since i work out a lot. I scared the doctors in the ER because their monitor kept going off because under 40bpm is considered a failing heart but i was just fine.
Even if he doesn’t want to admit it, Vought was the only family Homelander had. Madelyn Stilwell was like his mother, which is why she had a margin of control over him. She was caring and nurturing to him and he desperately needed that. Stanford Edgar was his father. Cold, distant…the only thing Homelander wanted was his approval, his respect. Stan was the only person Homelander was intimidated by.
Not much range in acting needed, all he plays are the mastermind high IQ type characters and Stillwell from the Boys comics is no exception. He's simply playing the characters that he knows he can ace.
This is a prime example of people only have power over you when you allow them to. Stan knows How to press Homelanders buttons. That gives him power over him. Homelander does not have control over himself. Stan Edgar does. That makes him more powerful
Currently the Season is still going, but I have a feeling Stan has purposefully pushed Homelander over the edge for him to do something so overwhelmingly stupid and unsalvageable that it will sink the entire Super Hero market. So he can come with a neat and tidy military V24 solution. Possibly didnt expect to be overthrown, but hey, if he isnt there while Vought just burns down, and returns to save the company, it would work out even better! Im calling it.
I am convinced this season is the end of Homelander and that Black Noir will be the last remaining Supe going into Season 4 (since he is basically Stan's assassin anyway).
I think it's more a case that he knows it's inevitable now and there's no real reason for him to try and hold things together. Sort of, 'Congratulations. Now you've gotten everything you wanted. Let's see how long you enjoy it.'
6:45 The way Homelander looks like a child who just got scolded and is to scared to say anything in front of Stan truly shows how much power he wields without the need for Compound V.
No matter what he's in, Giancarlo Esposito just OWNS the scene. He has such a commanding presence that lets you know that he's in charge and is fully aware of it, as well as a deep intelligence and charm that makes him a joy to watch. I was so excited to hear that he was joining The Boys and the show was elevated by his casting.
Stan Edgar doesn't need compound V to stand up to Homelander. He has something even more potent and powerful: capital. And lots of it. Considering that Vought is a defense corporation, a mega pharmaceutical company and film industry, he's probably one of the richest men in the world. And that type of wealth translates into immense power that Homelander could never wield or understand. The power to topple regimes, transform economies and shape government policy behind closed doors. Stan even said it to Starlight. Power isn't just coercive violence used by Homelander. It is "the ability to bend the world to your will" and you can't do that with violence alone. Stan is the 1%, he is apart of what Adam Smith called "the masters of mankind", the small class of extremely rich and powerful people who actually rule the world. Those type of guys make Homelander look like a pathetic child compared to what they're capable of
It has nothing to do with his wealth, all of homelanders life, if homelander wanted someone to be afraid of him, they simply were. Stan Edgar however never flinches at him, he can hear his heart beat he KNOWS Stan genuinely isn’t scared of him. And that SCARES homelander.
@@belowaverage4721 It has everything to do with his wealth. If Edgar was a middle class average Joe, he wouldn't be able to stand up to anyone, especially not Homelander. His wealth and position functions as leverage. He literally pays everyone's bills dude and that means he has power over all the superheroes, who rely on their generous incomes to sustain their celebrity lifestyles. Extreme wealth translates into political power and social influence. Vought earns hundreds of billions in revenue each year and Edgar sits at the top of that corporate empire. His heart rate remains the same because you don't get to sit at the top of Vought by falling prey to anxiety and insecurity(like Homelander) His pursuit of corporate power is what makes him cold, calculating and extremely confident.
it does actually have nothing to do with his wealth and power. as big as Vought is of a defense contractor, it's still child's play compared to the actual U.S Army. the only thing they have going for as a pharmaceutical company is CV and well, we are seeing how that works out for them. V24 is their future, and that success is credited to Stan - the original Frederick Vought definitely didn't give that a thought, because he and his wife were a bit of a martyr themselves. Stan's real power is his willpower and his schemes/intelligence. climbing up to the top of the food chain in a company that was literally founded by a Nazi while being a black guy himself? that's willpower right there. you can never really kick him out of Vought, he will always comeback. and even if somehow plotholes kept him from doing so, eventually given time he will build Vought 2.0 while the current one burst in flames under Homelander's regime.
@@The_Art_Style Heh, that's like saying Heather's Joker is better than the Batman animated Joker. Both characters are the same to the T in the comics and show, and you can see that by how he handles Homelander without fear which scares and annoys HL to no end.
its the fact that homelander could kill him and they both know it and also the fact that homelander knows when someone is scared and lying and he didnt sense that one bit from him is what makes him truly amazing
Rewatch the first two seasons after the third and it’s crazy how he was always a step ahead. Defiantly haven’t seen the last of him after his boot off as CEO
Ironically stillwell did have a show counterpart but she died and didn’t seem as dominant of a character. Stan did canonically exist in the comics, but he was never shown on panel. Also Vought was on panel in a flashback but he wasn’t sympathtic to the Nazis cause at all and defected in WW2, something the show changed.
I wonder what makes someone like Stan Edgar. He’s ruthless and looks for ways to advance his power, yes, but it almost seems like he puts Vought’s success and well-being over his own interests at times, such as when he admitted to disliking having to use Stormfront to get people to accept compound V but that it would be best for stock prices. Or how he spent decades making Vought heroes America’s darlings and a major source of income but realized that they’re irredeemable and doomed to ruin Vought’s image and is now looking to get Vought out of the hero business he spent most of his life supporting, essentially erasing a large fraction of his own legacy. The man was closing in on retiring age (considering his likely income, he could have probably left decades ago) but was risking his safety and compromising on his personal comfort trying to ensure the company would still be going strong after he left (and you KNOW he’ll back to fix things once Homelander screws up). Did he have family who worked for Vought? A mentor? Or is he like Homelander who recently said that if the company falls he falls.
I think he is just someone who dosent care for all the man children that compound v makes; he realizes how stupid it is to give them permanent powers and the problems that come with them being random as well. All he wants to do is run a successful company; homelander is cargo he desperately wants just gone forever.
I'm thinking his mentor was Vought himself (unlikely given the age difference) or one of Vought's immediate successors. Stan was a young (and obviously ambitious) employee that was trusted enough to fly around the world babysitting supes during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan (1980ish?), so it stands to reason his life represents a unique experience in the corporate world. He's a megalomaniac who got lucky and found his calling I suppose.
@@pierrechildress8875 Likely not Dr. Frederick Vought, given he was Stormfront’s husband and (as far as we know) shared her views, but I think you’re right that he had a kind of mentorship from someone high up in the company shortly after Dr. Vought’s time. He did seem to have a very important job when he was with Payback in the 80s.

And that character got lasered. And she wasn't constantly pissing Homelander off. It would already be stupid af, but the fact that Edgar's blood pressure never moves makes the idea even cringier. Even a cold-blooded killer will feel some natural fear in front of a pissed off supe that could laser them into pieces. Homelander could easily do it just due to his unbelievably poor impulse control. Unless they both know he can't. Smoke and mirrors and manipulation are always interesting, but they do happen in a physical world.
@@Julesy980 more stupid than "omg he has superpowers?" That has already been there with the Headpopper. And for the heartbeat part, psychopaths are unable to feel fear and some of them don't even have the fight or flight response or hightened heart rate.
Stan Edgar is basically James Stillwell They both are very calculating Both are the embodiment of business stand point And both of them don’t fear homelander
What makes his stand offs with Homelander even more impressive is that Homelander can literally always tell when someone is scared of him. He can both see and hear their heart as it beats fast and faster in his presence so he knows if someone is bluffing or faking being intimidated. This means that Edgar is one NO WAY pretending to not be threatened by Homelander. He quite literally feels no fear at all from him and that terrifies and confuses Homelander so much that he cant help but always be deeply affected by what Edgar says.

Going by the show where the comic has been changed I think he's even more impressive. Giancarlo Esposito pulls off these kinds of roles brilliantly.
Love how in the last scene with homelander he just shows the last bit of power over him, he barely acknowledges him, when homelander starts speaking he interrupts and shuts him down

Sure, I can believe Homelander being given superior powers and strength, but Soldier Boy was damn close, and was a highly trained soldier, so it should’ve been a little closer, it felt like Soldier Boy lost too easily (but he was tortured for 40 years and hadn’t had a real fight during that time, so I can put that fight aside). However, Butcher and Homelander? That was the fight that should’ve broke the camel’s back (Homelander in this instance), since both had very similar powers. But even then it felt a little underwhelming, tho it was still satisfying to see Homelander scared of someone for a change.
I bet the directors for The Boys just came to Giancarlo and told him "be an exaggerated version of Gus Fring"
This equivalent character I'm the comics is just like this. He gives no fucks about homelander
@@lastone032085 Not just Homelander, just the world in general throughout the entire comics he dates a woman in the company and teaches her and rises her up the ranks just so when the company fell she'd be the one to recieve the blame and the punishment and felt no remorse for what he did to her
@@lancethedecayedguardian2719 Doesn't bode well for Victoria.
@@Oll1000 Exactly
I think they just said, Be Gustavo Fring, hold the chicken.
To be fair, Homelander has kinda fucked himself as well 😂
I think that it’s actually a part of a plan.We see early in the season that he wants out of the company and wants to sell V24 to the military.
@@darknorman2914 that is a great theory.
And he doesn't even swear, He tries his best not to let his ego break him
And the only one who actually found his weak point was Butcher who actually not just managed to manipulate him into accepting the deal but also managed to fool both Edgar and Homelander at the same time (Making Homelander turn against Vought for hiding Ryan even if Butcher took him)
It would've went well if Storm hasn't interrupted
The only one who sees him for who he really is. He’s a prisoner to the same humans he loathes.their hate/love validates his existence. It’s probably one of the many reasons why Stan doesn’t respect him.

They just called him one day and asked if they can record his daily life with Antony

In their first argument back in S2, I though Stan was more relying on the need of homelander for people´s worship and how his public image fullfilñs that, but now I realize that his lack of fear comes simply due to homelander´s fragile ego
@@Magicmindmoon I don't think he has any fear period
@@pablo1006pr and it works perfectly
Ebita margins 😂

What's normal depends on your age and activity level but, generally, a resting heart rate of 60 to 80 beats per minute (BPM) is considered to be in the normal range. This is what Homelander was refering to in the last scene! He can hear Stan's heartbeat and he's impress by it, Stan doesn't flinch one bit.
Oh my, my resting heart rate is around 40bpm. When people say 60 to 80 I'm like wtf.
80/60 is probably supposed to be blood pressure and not heart rate

I don’t think Homelander’s actor should be underestimated. He is the perfect fodder for Stan Edgar’s character.
Dude, Antony Starr is what everybody talks about when people discuss this show.

That is what happens in the comics, James Stillwell understood Homelander's nature so well he purposefully set him on a self destructive path.
Reading this comment after watching Sage's introduction scene makes so much sense

6:45 The way Homelander looks like a child who just got scolded and is to scared to say anything in front of Stan truly shows how much power he wields without the need for Compound V.
He loves messing with homelander
1:44 most of the time I can describe Stan Edgar as a scary boss but in this scene I can feel he is nice and approachable boss

- Stan Edgar
Those type of guys make Homelander look like a pathetic child compared to what they're capable of
Damn that's so true
True
His heart rate remains the same because you don't get to sit at the top of Vought by falling prey to anxiety and insecurity(like Homelander)
His pursuit of corporate power is what makes him cold, calculating and extremely confident.
it does actually have nothing to do with his wealth and power. as big as Vought is of a defense contractor, it's still child's play compared to the actual U.S Army. the only thing they have going for as a pharmaceutical company is CV and well, we are seeing how that works out for them.
I've barely watched this show, but damn this is the most impressive character in the entire show. He absolutely owns every scene he's in.
They picked the perfect actor for this roll

I love that Stan Edgar is just James Stillwell from the comics since they change James to Madelyn.
Me too! He definitely not afraid of Homelander.
Edgar is cooler than Stillwell the actor is just so perfect
@@The_Art_Style Heh, that's like saying Heather's Joker is better than the Batman animated Joker. Both characters are the same to the T in the comics and show, and you can see that by how he handles Homelander without fear which scares and annoys HL to no end.
It’s interesting to see that Edgar is much more emotionally moved by Butcher than by Homelander, even if it is whilst plotting
its the fact that homelander could kill him and they both know it and also the fact that homelander knows when someone is scared and lying and he didnt sense that one bit from him is what makes him truly amazing
His ability to completely drain all humanity, compassion anything warm from his face and show complete disgust hate and pure rage is....cool
Giancarlo Esposito plays the most incredible characters. He has the ability to give off intimidation energy without raising his voice.
He is excellent in this. He's come SUCH a long way from School Daze and being an non speaking extra in Trading Places and King Of New York.
Rewatch the first two seasons after the third and it’s crazy how he was always a step ahead. Defiantly haven’t seen the last of him after his boot off as CEO
Stan Edgar is literally Stillwell in the comics lol I love it. Giancarlo was made to play him.
All he wants to do is run a successful company; homelander is cargo he desperately wants just gone forever.
he is a true business man, he doesnt care for recognition or legacy, his only interest is a good company, he thinks all supes are bad products
