When I was dating my wife, she was a big fan of Gordon and we went to see him live in Montreal. We will be married for 50 yrs this July 11th and we are still big fans of Gordon Lightfoot.
There will never be another Gordon Lightfoot. He was truly an original. Unbelievable lyricist, incredible singer, and an exquisite human being. The world has suffered a terrible loss.
As with friends, I find it hard to say that so & so is THE BEST. My dog is my best friend. I have a few buddies that would be contenders for THE BEST, however, I feel that if designated 1 in particular as the best, it would slight the rest. Mr Lightfoot is certainly a legend, an outstanding singer/songwriter & well deserves a place in music history. He is, without a doubt, in the high rankings range. That's only my opinion & point of view, not intended to stir up controversy.
I love how (unlike some musicians) he did not feel the need to try and "upgrade" his songs to "modern standards". The vocals are pure, just like the original.
R.I.P....Mr.Gordon..love your songs since 70's,now I'm 68,and still touch my heart The "Wreck from Edmund Fitzgerald ",was an amazing composition,in the memory of the Crew and this one,"if you could read my mind" again always touch my heart, feel a Gem to the human kind,we all love you and will miss you forever. I heard the first strains of this flawless gem when I was 12 years old in 1970. The music seeped into my bloodstream and saturated my soul. It's been encoded in my DNA ever since ... Blessed to have grown up in that era.
I had the same intense experience with this song on a workman’s radio when I was 7 in 1970.. there was a funeral of a young boy in the Welsh chapel opposite our school, at playtime .. kids were watching silently, the tiny congregation overshadowed by giant stone angels… the world stopped right there. I tried to contain these intense feelings by fiddling with the bobbles on my jumper. I can only really appreciate the intense sad perfection of this song as an adult and like you, it suffused my very essence.
This is a rare and beautiful song about love that is over and the dispair felt by former lovers when they realize that the love is no longer there. I don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling's gone and I just can't get it back. Heartbreaking, I've been there.😢
I come back to this now knowing today's news of his passing. I live half an hour away from Gordon's hometown in Canada, they have a street named after him that I passed many times during my time in college. This news crushes the country, he was truly the greatest.
I was ten in the 70s when I heard this song the first time. It's almost 2020 and I still think it's the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I'll never forget it. Thank you Mr. Lightfoot!
I am a 1963 model, and this song brings out so many happy memories for me of what was a decent childhood. Carefree days, no viruses trying to kill us, no real issues other than the pub closing at 11pm..... Happy days indeed.....
Funny how music has changed so much over the years. I think it's a direct reflection of the society we live in that influences music so much. Things were way different back then. Born in 1966, I have seen a lot of changes and rarely can I say that any of it has been for the better. So sad for me really. But I don't think I'm alone in that sentiment. God bless you and yours.
I love what he's done to this song, whereas his daughter pointed out that her parents divorce was not one sided, and Mr Lightfoot took ownership of his failures, and changed the lyrics to acknowledge his part. May you rest in peace.
This song in recent days has been haunting me. I didn't know who sung it, so I put the words in a search engine. I'm 66 years old and to me this is Blue eye Soul music. This song resonates at a frequency only the gifted can achieve. God Bless him!
35 years ago I was moving from Montreal to California taking a three month car drive trip with my soon to be wife. I was a Lightfoot fan since a couple of years and had purchased tickets to one of his concerts in Vancouver well in advance. Upon arrival in Vancouver I called home in Argentina and learned that my grandfather had passed two days ago. I was so sad and shocked and my wife convinced me to go to the concert anyway, which we did. It was a deeply touching experience, I was in tears during many of his songs. Classic - over 50 years old time does not age a song like this because it is timeless! - They just do not write them like this anymore do they. Thanks Gordon Lightfoot for this true classic song for all time i love it.
This man is brilliant poet and singer. His music is timeless, its as beautiful today as as it was when I first heard back in the sixties. He's Canada's Legend and I couldn't be more proud to him
I've been a Gordon Lightfoot fan since the early 70's and this is the first time I've heard RESTLESS. Haunting, eerie and beautiful at the same time. Amazing singer/songwriter ... R.I.P.

His musical output was very special. I kind of communed with him when listening, because his lyrics were well composed, very personal and sensitive. Also knowing his handling of the usage of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I realize what a caring and considerate individual he was in protecting the families of the victims of that tragedy. You don't always learn that about performers and the music they write.

Mr Lightfoot
I recently had a weekly 360 mile round trip commute for work. Most of the time, I listened to his Pandora channel. Not just his music, but mostly his contemporaries, my favorite era But it did introduce me to a lot of his songs I hadn't heard. Early Morning Rain, and Canadian Railroad Trilogy, among others. All great.
Been listening to this one all my life. It’s one of a few perfectly constructed songs as far as lyrics, chord arrangement, key and vocals are concerned. This melancholy song of unrequited love is a classic that will be around for a very long time.
HI From Ireland asked a guy 30s playing acoustic gig in a bar where I live if he knew Jordon Lightfoot ..if you read my mind...didn't think he knew it..he played it as I'm he knew it all his life....I ask if they request a song to be played...timeless song...
He still delivers this song with feeling and melody. Many other artists who emerged from the 1960's have become embarrassing figures in concert. Bob Dylan comes to mind. There must be something in the water supply in Canada. You have this man , Leonard Cohen, The McGarrigle sisters and their Progeny , Joni Mitchell, Most of The Band, Neil Young ,Oscar Peterson and many more from Canada.
I heard this song when I was just 8 years old in my relative’s car and this song absolutely transformed me. For the very first time I didn’t just hear a song on the radio, I experienced it to my bones. I cried as I understood the so very deep and poetic metaphors describing a tragedy of a love ending and the emptiness and pain because of that happening. The vocal delivery of those lyrics danced perfectly with the purity and rawness of the guitar and it was overwhelming... this song made me understand what true songwriters are. They are crafters of art for your soul. I have shown my kids this song and they are mesmerized. This is true talent on a very high yet understated level. It is all that is right with music.
A masterpiece. I love how it harmony just flows with interlacing arpeggios for 4:16 minutes so generously within this beautiful melody, not to mention its clever form structure.
What a heartbreaking song ughhh 😢 this is such a human song. Ughhh we love so hard and then fall out of love and we do feel bad about it but it’s our truth and we have to live our lives. So sad. This is beautiful poetry

I recently had a weekly 360 mile round trip commute for work. Most of the time, I listened to his Pandora channel. Not just his music, but mostly his contemporaries, my favorite era
But it did introduce me to a lot of his songs I hadn't heard.
Age, nor time shall weary Canada's poet minstrel., nor diminish the impact
of his music. He is a legend and there will never be another like him.
So sad to hear the news today. I bow my head to one of the greatest song writers of all time. Even Bob Dylan learned from you.
I was reading all the comments from this video, and My Gosh, Gordon Lightfoot is so beloved.
And deservedly so.
please-when you want- read my comment..

Canada's greatest wordsmith poet songwriter and everything else
One of the greatest and most recognizable songs on the planet
one of the most beautiful songs ever
HI From Ireland asked a guy 30s playing acoustic gig in a bar where I live if he knew Jordon Lightfoot ..if you read my mind...didn't think he knew it..he played it as I'm he knew it all his life....I ask if they request a song to be played...timeless song...
You will not be forgotten. Thank you for your gifts of songs to this world. Peace be with you.
Music is his blood,
Rhythm is his heartbeat,
Words are his breath.
Did you make that up or is it from a song?
@@hillmadaris I made that up...I'm a poet when the Spirit hits. 😊
@@dvawva5197 May I use it on my FB page?

@@dvawva5197 Thanks! I am Pam Madaris Hill on FB.
At 84 and 52 you and this song is still as good as back then!
RIP Gord. no more high school heroes, wise poets don't come around here anymore
Rest in Peace, Gordon Lightfoot. Thanks for the music and the memories.
What a heartbreaking song ughhh 😢 this is such a human song. Ughhh we love so hard and then fall out of love and we do feel bad about it but it’s our truth and we have to live our lives. So sad. This is beautiful poetry
