This song is very special to my son and I. When my son was a baby he had horrible colic every night at dinner time. One night as he was screaming away "Vincent" came on the radio and he instantly stopped crying and he listened with a very serene look on his face. So the next day I went out and bought the cassette and every night when the screaming started I would play the song and he would calmed down and listen. I then just had it on repeat so the screaming didn't start at all. When he was in high school he painted me a beautiful painting of Starry Night and had learned to play "Vincent" on the guitar and that was my present for my birthday that year. To this day it is still the present I cherish most. And it always makes me tear up.
Seeing him sing this live, as opposed to the recorded version, you can see and feel the words even more... So touching. Beautiful. Always tear up when I hear this one.
his vouce brings one back to the seventies, so much water in the morning atmaspheire, would walk and see the fedgins on the grass learning to explore out of their nest, we used to pick up the birds who hit the windows trying to migrate, , was a beautiful habatat, , so true he has one of the most soothing sound, a true poet! bounus his abitlitry to sing like a no other, his own sound, beautiful, so glad you can see how much we all care and remember you>3 a class act
You should visit Auvers-sur-Oise, where is the Auberge where Vincent lived and shot himself, the cemetery where he and his brother are buried. It is a magic beautiful place!
For the longest time, I felt like there was no woman worth crying over. Nowadays, I cry over all of them. They are likely laughing, with another, you know.
The melody of this song makes its own rules. It's not bound by a straight time signature and tempo. It's deep, flowing, soft, and haunting. He sings it effortlessly. No one writes like this. This is truly a masterpiece. A musical story as opposed to my modern definition of a 'song'. Brilliant Mr. McLean. Just brilliant.
Years ago, before arthritis stopped me playing, I learned to play this song. I quickly discovered that there is no way to "keep time" with it. It's just a matter of feeling. And when one tries to set it to a strict time signature or tempo (to "quantize" the music), it loses its beauty.

Since I was a child this is one of the most beautiful ballads I have ever heard. Thank you Don McLean for this wonderful song. I am a big fan of you and Vincent van Gogh.
It is just called 'love'. But I wish he would watch the movie, which shows he did not kill himself, & was protecting arch villian egoitist maniac Gugauin.
My wife and I were blessed to see Don in concert in a 1930’s theatre years ago and have a meet-and-greet afterwards. To see and hear him, to get to shake his hand and thank him for blessing us with his talent truly was an unforgettable evening. Timeless. The ages have not weathered his music one bit and it never will.
He is expressing a phenonmenom of our time which clearly, is a unique event in our lives. We enjoyed the colour of Van Gogh's life, and now we are able to listen to Don Mclean say what we couldn't possibly put into words and music and for this, I for one, am truly grateful. A wonderful song, impeccably sung, thank you Don Mc Lean.
HE HOOKED ME WITH "PIE"...I WAS 32....THAT WHOLE ALBUM WAS GENIUS. AT 83 I STILL A HUGE FAN OF LYRICS, MELODIES & RENDITIONS!!! I WISH HIM ONLY WELL....Y'ALL AS WELL
I'll never forget , in the fall of '79, seeing a poster advertising his concert in my home province the following January. He put on a fantastic solo show; I saw him ( with 2 accompanists ) again 2 or 3 years later; some of my best musical memories.

Don McLean and Harry Chapin, had the magic that could draw you into their lyrics, to live the words. Mesmerizing you might say. The world needs more talent like this.
