Don, your music is an integral part of my foundation. It's hard for me to dig deeper than the memories of American Pie. The patterns that you have created are independent of their material substrate, and a piece of you will carry on with me through eternity... part of me. Thank you for being who you are!
@@charliesouthgate6125 Yeah, I admit here a year later what I wrote sounds a bit fan-boyish. But this song... it's a part of me. It describes the turmoil my country endured through my formative years. And actually, there's a much more personal reason why I love American Pie. When I was a child through the 60's my mother always sang me a song at bedtime. So when I had a daughter in the 90's & 00's I would bring my guitar into her bedroom every night and we'd sing a bedtime song of her choice together. I usually brought in a 3-ring binder of songs I had printed. And her favorite bedtime song was.... you guessed it. American Pie! I sang this song hundreds of times for my daughter at bedtime. When she was very young it was adorable when she'd make the sign of the cross when it got to The Father, Son and The Holy Ghost. Too cute for words. Now lest you think my daughter was a much deeper thinker than a regular 6 year old would be I should point out that the actual reason she chose American Pie more than any other song was because it was the LONGEST SONG in my 3 ring binder. And children have their priorities at bedtime. "Read me the long one Daddy" :) Nonetheless, to me American Pie is a masterpiece. And listening to and seeing interviews with Don McLean I can tell that he and I are, to a large degree, cultural birds of a feather. I respect him and I understand what loss he was lamenting in American Pie. I have two older brothers who were about Don's age, and I got to understand the sock hop era through them. The other day I got a text message out of the blue from my now 28 year old daughter who said "GUESS WHAT SONG IS ON THE RADIO?!?!?!" Shared memories.... they're the best!
@@usmcbrat2 great story my friend, I wasn't being disrespectful to you, I could tell, as Don did also, that you meant every word; I just tried to inject a small amount of humour, hope it brought a small smile to your face, All the best, Charlie
Great song. I remind he said once about this song that it's about the February 1959 plane crash, where Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and Big Bopper died.
You've just touched on something I've never heard expressed before: elegy. Surely one of the reasons the song is so poignant then and, sadly, now more than ever.
February 3rd 1959 the day the music died. Buddy Holly's plane crashed. This song is definitely as American as apple pie. Not many songs rise to the status of this true original. Don McLean is an American treasure.
The FAA's findings about the accident www.faa.gov/lessons_learned/small_airplane/accidents/N3794N The flight should never have happened and wouldn't today

I saw him live at the Dominion Tottenham Court Rd in 1979 with my 8 an 10 year old sons. You can work out how old they are now! I am 77 and can never forget his encore. He came on without the guitar and sang 'Stardust" acapella and brought the house down. I have never seen the like of it, before or since. Rock on DM
We saw Don at a small music venue in Houston, TX a few years before this performance in Austin. He ended with American Pie and brought the crowd to its feet, all singing in unison - it was an amazing moment! As he left the stage, during his standing ovation, he walked by our table.... and I gave him a high five... and thanked him for a great evening!
Greatest song ever written in my eyes. When people discover what every single word means in this song, there is absolutely no denying it is the greatest song ever written.
Is there somewhere I can learn that. I guess the reason this song hits the heart of so many of you americans is because those words reflects your history or something like that. Would be fun to understand the meaning. As a Swedish person I just love the song because it sounds great to me 😁

This song still brings me tears. It's as much a tribute to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper & 17-year old Richie Valens as to Don McLean. A powerful song of one of the more tragic moments in the rich history of rock and roll
Whoever engineered / oversaw the audio mix / recording deserves a Grammy. Basically almost every issue that plagues live recordings was addresses here. It also helps when you have talent that is consistent. This is why you need the actual performers at the soundcheck.
Bravo! You still got it Don. Thanks and congrats for writing this Hall of Fame Hit. It's so All American, and will always be embedded in our memories forever.
I’m a boomer and this song is without a doubt one of the best songs ever written if not the best of our generation. It always brings back a memory from being 15 years old when this song was new and playing on the radio. My family and others were on a camping trip and only one of us boys were old enough to have a drivers license and so him and us other two were boys were asked to drive back into town for additional supplies (Times have changed) As we were cruising at what I remember to be about the legal speed limit American pie came on the radio and that’s when it happened. The three of us started singing along to the song at the top of our lungs when the driver realized he had been pushing down on the accelerator the whole time as we were singing and realized we were then cruising along at about 95 mph on a two lane country highway marked at 55 mph! Fortunately nothing bad happened as we slowed down and continued on but I still have that exhilarating memory of my youth, ah to be young again.
Probably the best sing a long feel good song of all time. This was energy, fun, love, happy, Star struck, feel good all over. My childhood and young teens would not have been the same without this song…
here S Korea president sing American pie at white house, l can still remember, will live long long after generations to come, wow love it, thanks dear president, Respect to him,
Don....I am a Brazilian English teacher and I have made a class with you song.... the story etc.... it was awsome! and played your sond to my students they just loved it! thanks
Legends always have a masterpiece that hundred years won't die and will always be a part of the new generation. Hats off for this song what a masterpiece..
I don't say this lightly. But this song is as much a part of the Great American Songbook as "Over the Rainbow", "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Someone to Watch Over Me". OK, I have my body armor on now. Take your shots.
I'm not sure what the 🥧 part of the title means, but this song is as AMERICAN as it gets, maybe only behind the national anthem. It has so many purely American references in it, only leaving out baseball perhaps. His real genius was not referring to Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens directly, but making us wonder all these decades. Plus the tune is also brilliant. They asked Don in an interview, What does American Pie mean to you? He said, It means I don't have to work anymore! We should all be so lucky. Thanks Don!
A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music Used to make me smile And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And maybe they'd be happy for a while But February made me shiver With every paper I'd deliver Bad news on the doorstep I couldn't take one more step I can't remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride Something touched me deep inside The day the music died So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die" Did you write the book of love And do you have faith in God above If the Bible tells you so? Now, do you believe in rock 'n' roll Can music save your mortal soul And can you teach me how to dance real slow? Well, I know that you're in love with him 'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym You both kicked off your shoes Man, I dig those rhythm and blues I was a lonely teenage bronckin' buck With a pink carnation and a pickup truck But I knew I was out of luck The day the music died I started singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die" Now, for ten years we've been on our own And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone But that's not how it used to be When the jester sang for the king and queen In a coat he borrowed from James Dean And a voice that came from you and me Oh, and while the king was looking down The jester stole his thorny crown The courtroom was adjourned No verdict was returned And while Lenin read a book on Marx A quartet practiced in the park And we sang dirges in the dark The day the music died We were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die" Helter skelter in a summer swelter The birds flew off with a fallout shelter Eight miles high and falling fast It landed foul on the grass The players tried for a forward pass With the jester on the sidelines in a cast Now, the halftime air was sweet perfume While sergeants played a marching tune We all got up to dance Oh, but we never got the chance 'Cause the players tried to take the field The marching band refused to yield Do you recall what was revealed The day the music died? We started singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die" Oh, and there we were all in one place A generation lost in space With no time left to start again So, come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick Jack Flash sat on a candlestick 'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend Oh, and as I watched him on the stage My hands were clenched in fists of rage No angel born in Hell Could break that Satan spell And as the flames climbed high into the night To light the sacrificial rite I saw Satan laughing with delight The day the music died He was singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die" I met a girl who sang the blues And I asked her for some happy news But she just smiled and turned away I went down to the sacred store Where I'd heard the music years before But the man there said the music wouldn't play And in the streets the children screamed The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed But not a word was spoken The church bells all were broken And the three men I admire most The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost They caught the last train for the coast The day the music died And they were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die This'll be the day that I die" They were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye Singin', "This'll be the day that I die"
WOW, U ARE A EXCELLENT PRINT! OR DID U JUST TYPE ABOUT A MILE A MINUTE. LIKE THE SAY. THANK U. I DIDN'T DIDN'T KNOW IT THAT WELL BUT NOW I DO. BUT OF COURSE I DID KINDA FROWN, WHEN I READ THE CHURCH BELLS ALL WERE BROKEN. AND THE THREE MEN I ADMIRE MOST THE FATHER, SON AND THE HOLY GHOST. THEY CAUGHT THE LAST TRAIN FOR THE COAST THE DAY THE MUSIC DIED. THAT I WAS NOT VERY THRILL READING IT. BECAUSE U SEE I READ THE BIBLE. AND IT IS WRITTEN, THAT WE MUST USE (THE HOLY GHOST ). BUT I DON'T KNOW ABOUT , IF IT'S FORBITTEN IN A SONG. BUT U KNOW I LIKE THE SONG. BUT NOW THAT I AM OLDER I FEEL LIKE MAYBE, THE SINGER SHOULDN'T HAVE THOSE THREE NAMES TOGETHER. BECAUSE OF THE FACT, THAT THEY ARE NOT MEN. IT GOES LIKE THIS IN MY PRAYER, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER AND OF THE SON AND THE HOLY GHOST. AND THEY ARE THREE PERSONS IN ONE GOD. THAT MEANS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A GOD. AND IT'S WITHVTHE CAPITAL (G) SO THAT'S THE MIGHTY FATHER GOD. SO WHATEVER THE SINGER (DON MCLEAN) HAD IN HIS MIND TO DO IT.IT'S DONE ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS MAY (GOD) FORGIVE HIM IF IT'S A SIN. AND ALSO US FOR LIKING THAT SONG. LIKE I AM TELLING U AGAIN THANK FOR TYPING ALL THE LYRICS OF THAT SONG, AMERICAN PIE. I MEAN I GUESS WE WOULD HAVE TO ASK A PRIEST OR A MINISTER. BUT LIKE THE PRAYER THAT I PRAY EVERYDAY. WELL IT DOES THAT (GOD) DO FORGIVE US FOR OUR SINS. IF WE REPENT. OUR MOTHER EMELIA MAY SHE (REST IN PEACE) SHE WOULD SEND US TO CATHOLIC CHURCH CATACHISIM. AND IN THE PRAYER WE HAD TO LEARN WAS , THE APOSTLE CREED. AND INTHAT PRAYER IT DOES SAYS THAT THE CATHOLIC CHURCH DOES HAVE, THE COMMUNION OF SANITES AND THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. AND BY THE WAY THAT ,THE APOSTLE CREED IS A VERY LONG PRAYER BECAUSE IT'S A PRAYER OF REPENTANCE. THANK U AGAIN 💓💗💖. FOR BEING SUCH A NICE PERSON.

"Read me the long one Daddy" :)
Nonetheless, to me American Pie is a masterpiece.
@@usmcbrat2 great story my friend, I wasn't being disrespectful to you, I could tell, as Don did also, that you meant every word; I just tried to inject a small amount of humour, hope it brought a small smile to your face,
All the best, Charlie
@@charliesouthgate6125 Thanks, Charilie!
Great song. I remind he said once about this song that it's about the February 1959 plane crash, where Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and Big Bopper died.
and the pilot
One of the greatest songs ever written. Not just a song but an elegy for a nation.
That's true
This song has a totally different feel than the recorded version and I LOVE IT!
윤대통령님 덕분에 돈 맥클린 씨를 알게되었고 아메리칸 파이 노래 들었는데 정말 최고예요❤❤❤
(Thanks to President Yoon, I got to know Don McLean and listened to American Pie's song, it's really the best)❤❤❤
this song is still my fav
Same
Me too. Super sad nowadays with the country in chaos and no end in sight.
As it should be.
I sat at my dad's grave on his birthday with afew beers played his favourite songs the Beatles , and freebird etc and of course American pie 🥧
Mine as well.
Rock on DM
Great song - I'm thankful for all the song writers over the years that have come out with songs that will be remembered !!!

As this exchange shows, over 50 years, and people are still finding it.
What a beautiful song
This song still brings me tears. It's as much a tribute to Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper & 17-year old Richie Valens as to Don McLean. A powerful song of one of the more tragic moments in the rich history of rock and roll
Well spoken my friend - he has captured the grief and compassion of a nation in the outpouring words oh his very soul!

American pie is one of the best song ever written and composed. Thank you
Whoever engineered / oversaw the audio mix / recording deserves a Grammy. Basically almost every issue that plagues live recordings was addresses here. It also helps when you have talent that is consistent. This is why you need the actual performers at the soundcheck.
Truly, one of the greatest songs ever written and performed. 👍
What memories this song brings..
Timeless classic . Awesome !
Still gives me chills after all these years.

Poetry to my heart. One of best music storytellers I've been privileged to hear.
America is so... 🎶💕💖🦊
Bravo! You still got it Don. Thanks and congrats for writing this Hall of Fame Hit. It's so All American, and will always be embedded in our memories forever.
I was so lucky to grow up with this music. Truly the gem of rock: Queen, ELP, Who, Toto, and so many more.
Chills every time
This song I know word for word ,as a child I loved it and always will !!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I AM SO HAPPY HES STILL ALIVE
You do not need a lot of hits. You just need that one Mega Iconic Hit that lasts forever and is instantly recognizable...
Probably the best sing a long feel good song of all time. This was energy, fun, love, happy, Star struck, feel good all over. My childhood and young teens would not have been the same without this song…

One of the best songs ever written. Perfect.
Love it
Definitely!!!!!!!
My being born in 1956 this song always reminds me of my youth. Especially growing up in West Texas.
No sir, there is no need of an armor, because you are absolutely right with the proclamation that you just said......Shots are unnecessary
A shot of whiskey, a shot of rye. Cheers.
Bahb Woolley Yes, sir, those shots instead!
Cheers!!
Thanks Don!
Interesting choices but I can't disagree.

A long, long time ago
I can still remember how that music
Used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
Something touched me deep inside
The day the music died
So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Did you write the book of love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so?
Now, do you believe in rock 'n' roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow?
Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm and blues
I was a lonely teenage bronckin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Now, for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the jester sang for the king and queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
And a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the king was looking down
The jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
A quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Helter skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now, the halftime air was sweet perfume
While sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh, but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died?
We started singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
Oh, and there we were all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So, come on, Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the Devil's only friend
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan spell
And as the flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play
And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
And them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die"
They were singin', bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry
Them good ol' boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin', "This'll be the day that I die"
Killing me softly with this song!
Thank u.👍🏽☺️
🥰 Thank You.!
AMEN ...
Have to see it. Thank you DonMclean.

Don, we all know what this song is all about, The 3 wonderful people we lost in that terrible plane crash that cold day on 2-3-59. This song touches me deeply and I thank you. I’m 53 and been listening to it all my life and to this day, April 2022 , It still runs chills up my spine every time I listen to it. I just want to say thank you for giving us such a beautiful song.
