Or the manager is picking a system that doesn't match the player profiles? Why do we have to be so risk averse and stick long balls up to kane when you've got bellingham foden, kane and saka as the attacking four.
Back to pickford from a corner, up to kane to win a header against the tallest defensive line in the tournament.

That’s Southgate for you. Reminds me of the days under Sven Goran Eriksen. He wasn’t a bad manager but we kept on trying to just cram all the best players into the starting lineup and just hope for the best. It’s why we kept playing Scholes on the left. The result was just going long into Crouch or Rooney and hoping the ball doesn’t rebound back to us which it always did. I see shades of that in how Southgate keeps going long into Kane and it’s like stepping into a Time Machine.

Having good players means nothing if they can't make it perform as a team. it's the problem between stick to a single position (Rigid) or dynamically move to find space (Flexible). but either former or latter, the coach has to be clear on how to fit in the right player which I doubt he could. Underwhelming if you believed the hype. England had a really good set of players available around 2006-2008, but apart from that for the last 50 years or so England haven't had enough good players to justify anybody expecting them to succeed. Brazil, France, Spain, Italy and Germany have turned up to plenty of tournaments with top players in every position, so it's not surprising they are in a position to win.
England might be in that position at the next WC or Euros, given how many of the best English players now are in their early 20s and more seem to be coming through. All they need is a top English youth player to decide he wants to play left-back or goalkeeper for once, and they'll be sorted!

England played amazing football in euro 96 and were the best team in the tournament, just unlucky with results. Then England won Le Tournoi against Brazil, France and Italy (that tournament R Carlos scored the wonder goal). So maybe in your lifetime England were terrible but England were a very good side in the 90s unlucky not to win something. England were also the better side against Argentina until the red card, and again were the better side against them in 02. It's only in the modern era that we have so many players that are overhyped.

Very interesting analysis. I 100% agree. I feel like the major problem England had was that players other than Bellingham and Foden were incredibly non-dynamic. Trippier, Rice and TAA were glued to their positions and very reluctant to overlap.
The team also seemed incredibly weak at bypassing pressure having no real pre-thought passing schemes to overcome the Serbian pressure. Having no threats to explore the depth didn't make this task any easier, to be honest. Serbia realized this at half time but if Serbia had started off respecting England a little less the result might very well be different.

Nice analysis, just like the old days, too many similar profiles of players. The bottom line is the tactics should be built around Jude at all costs so he should be the only player with freedom to roam. This immediately raises questions about Foden, Trent and Kane.
I think Kane can be disciplined enough to stay higg, he did very well in the 2nd half feeding off scraps, but Foden is completely wrong for this squad. A lot of noise about Trent after last night, hes definitely not the kind of player we need in the pivot but we dont really have any other options.

If Kane and Bellingham are on the pitch, don't play Foden and vice-versa. If Kane and Bellingham are on the pitch, play a winger on the left instead that can run behind defenders and into space all day long. Foden is a traditional 10 masquerading as a winger, he just clogs up the middle when Kane and Bellingham are doing their thing in their natural positions.
Also, Walker needs to push up higher more often on the right, especially when you have a midfield base of Rice and TAA to cover any space left behind.
It really is that simple, but let's see what Southgate does or doesn't do (I'm not holding my breath).

Foden who struggled all game to make an impact played a full 90 mins and it took him 70 minutes to bring more energy into the midfield. I cheered Gareth's selection of TAA because I thought it signalled a direction towards more flexibility and movement. What I expected was for England to line up initially in a 3-3-3-1 (similar to Germany vs Scotland) with Trippier and Trent playing wing-backs and Foden + Bellingham in free 10 slots. Saka would mostly be expected to run in behind, particularly anytime Kane looked to drop. On the left, Trippier not pushing up to left wing means this space is available to Phil or Jude to slide into, as well as lots of space in the central midfield areas. It also means that when this movement occurs, the wing-backs are ideally placed to rotate into the space that has been vacated. And against teams that overload the back 4 by width, I was looking for Gareth to change the shape to 3-4-3 - Trent is the one player in the England squad who offers this. What we got instead was 3 players - Trippier, Foden and Bellingham - all fighting for the same 20 x 20 square of the pitch and playing in each others' pockets. Just look at their heat maps to see the issue. And for a back 5, for whatever reason Gareth is preferring to drop Rice back instead of rotating Trent out, which just feels completely wrong.
My view is that a midfield trio of Rice, Bellingham and Foden is a match (with the ball) for anyone in the competition, comparing with Rodri, Pedri and Fabian as an example. They just have to be used properly. I think that either means using Trent's flexibility more actively or switching to a 4-1-2-3 (copying Spain) and adding Gordon on the left, which is better offensively but has some defensive issues. One thing is clear - if the team can't sort out a pattern of play that works, a fantastic opportunity for winning a wide open Euros tournament will have been lost. There's still time...but not much.

@@bengreen171 hes still better defensively then Trent and at 34 is still physically superior , trent just shouldnt be in the starting 11. He wins less then half his 1v1 ground duels , and barely a quarter of his aerial ones. He is literally in the bottom half of fullbacks across europes big 5 leagues defensively , and tbh was nowhere near the top for attacking stats last season either. but because he gets the opportunity in liverpools system to play some speculative diagonal long balls ( and has had a few big game moments like that cheeky quick corner vs Barca) hes somehow been labeled as this generations beckham. both walker and trippier should be ahead of him for RB. And he cant play midfield either . He can only long ball , he simply doesnt have the pass % to be a midfield maestro like say Kroos , and he also cant carry the ball forwards himself nor deal with heavy press as hes simply not skilled enough on the ball. All he can do is cross.

Agree 100% about Trent. The amount of people who don't understand positional play is different in possession and out of possession.

That squad should win. It’s a golden generation. And England has so many lethal options in the final third it’s ridiculous.
By parking the bus after getting in front, you’re also double down on your “weakness”.
The players are getting frustrated as well. They run around shaking their heads and yelling of each other.
Foden is on the left, he should be at 10. Trent is a fish out of water on that 8th position and there’s great option at 8th. Kane drops deep and participate in the buildup, but when he gets the ball deep, who is he gonna pass to, to get the ball progressively up the pitch?
Pickford is alright but he’s England’s biggest weakness. Why would you intensify your weakness?
You can’t just flip a switch either and regain momentum whenever you want. It’s bloody difficult in football.
And because you place a top3 world’s best offensive wingbacks on the 8th. you’re also completely unnecessarily get overrun on the midfield. Bellingham should be at 8 and have a free role. Foden should be at 10. You could put Gordon on the left.
In both games you needed pace in the number 9. That’s Toney for you.
He also became a danger against Denmark, but at that point, Denmark had the game under their control, because Southgate let them with playing a low-block, park the bus style, with probably the most competent front in this EUROS

And obviously England needs a pure left footed LB to exploit the wide area. I often see Trippier is awkward of using his left foot and this is a problem for England. Foden is in the half space so frequent and he needs to rely on a fullback that can gives overlap support. For no 9, they need a mobile striker and Watkins is the for the job.

In fact having these world class celebrity players who can't be dropped is in itself part of the problem - you lose a lot of Kane's quality by not allowing him to link play, but he can't do that because Bellingham is there. You want to play Foden as he's just won everything and been brilliant in another team, but it doesn't work with these other players. As a totally novice observer it seems obvious that players are not taking each other on, one to one. A totally non risk safe approach that does not create opportunity. If one player can beat another it leaves an unmarked player breaking free and pushes the opposition to break from strict marking. Remember those historical games where players “dribbled” past three players and took a shot at goal.!!!

You can even have 4 at the back and have stones come into midfield as the 2nd 6. In possession its the 3-box-3 and out its a 5-4-1 or 4-5-1. We arent drilled well enough for this pressing playstyle, just ait back and allow the opponent to create space behind them then hit them on the counter or recycle it and build up with slow play. Can even do a 5-3-2 or 4 triple 2 with watkins partnering kane up top, which would be great to see. Most of the players have experience with these systems, I've been saying this is how we should be playing for years now, is this not so obvious?

Should have played someone with more attacking ability and speed down the left instead of Foden. Already got Bellingham and Foden was just a waste not going out wide.
Kane should have been subbed off for Watkins with some pace on the ball if playing conservatively. If TAA was not working as you describe then again sub on Gallagher or Wharton sooner.
For harder opponents later in the comp, then it's probably going to need Wharton with Rice and Eze on the left. You want Kane to get service IN the box if he's playing and that will drive the best out of Bellingham and Saka. Eze is the sort of destructive player to cause carnage and Wharton can feed while Rice can play even deeper DM role. Gordon and Watkins if pace is on the agenda and pressing up high also again instead of Foden and sub on/off with Kane. And don't forget Palmer should have a run up front too instead of Kane if necessary. All depends if Kane gets ball in the box he's awesome if not try other combinations.

I think they will start the next match with the same lineup but if it goes as badly then Shaw will be risked, and I would expect to see Gallagher again plus Eze. walker's pace is critical to our defending if we have a high line. As I've said elsewhere, 3-4-3 (on paper) with Gordon in for Trippier is my preferred solution currently. back three, with Walker narrower alongside Stones and Guehi, stay back (i.e. we're not trying to get width from full backs). midfieled of Gordon, Bellingham, Rice, Trent, front three of Foden Kane, Saka. Gordon offers overlap on the left which holds defenders for foden to work inside to the right of centre, Bellingham stays the same (he favours the left of centre) which foden has vacated, Trent is in his best position to play cross field balls or crosses from more advanced positions and overlap Saka from time to time, he can also slot across into midfield depending on the situation. Gordon (although still not a left footer still does play wide left) has the workrate to get up and down the left and help out in defending, whilst offering more threat than Trippier, and Trent can help on the right without being exposed as the primary defender. Rice is the holding midfield and Stones can also step out into midfield as needed to help ball retention whilst still having two cover defenders behind him (which currently with wide full backs isn't the case). Shaw (if he ever gets fit) could come in for Gordon if we wanted more defensive protection.
overall more balance with not much sacrificed in defense and gets more of the players into their most effective positions.
