The problem with England is that they NEVER beat in the knockout stage of the world cup since 1966 any team called Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands... @@ktbecstasy one result is more like suprise than expected. England need to do that more consistently before they can truly say they have buried the notorious curse.
I agree. England in recent years have had some embarrassing moments with Iceland 2016 and Costa Rica in 2014, but in the last couple of tournament, it has been more of a heart break than an embarrassment. Take the Semi final with Croatia were they lost in extra time in 2018, Kane missing his penalty vs France in the 2022 World Cup, and of course losing to Italy in the final on penalties at Euro 2020. They always choke at the last hurdle
Tbf, that's somewhat to be expected. When you look at footballing giants like Germany or Brazil, there has always been chokes by those two but appearing consistently In the end stages of the tournament meant success came eventually. England's first final since 1966 was literally the euro 2020 finals, so its clear that the problem has been getting to the last hurdle in the first place. If England start appearing in semi finals and finals regularly, it would prove they're good enough and they would inevitably win something. Germany has won half of the finals they've appeared in, where Brazil have won 5 of the 7 finals they've appeared in.
@@ecaeas4439 Exactly, you can't succeed in international tournaments without experience and know-how, getting to the latter stages in most if not all tournaments will help and eventually everything will fall your way and it'll lead to a tournament win. It can change so quickly, until 2008 Spain was the big underachiever in international football with one solitary Euro win in 1964 and hadn't really come close to repeating that but by 2012 they had won it all and dominated everyone in their path. I feel this England team remind me of Germany at the turn of the century, lacklustre showings at the 1998 world cup and 2000 Euros (finished bottom of their group behind England) lead to a complete revamp in German football (similar to England with St Georges Park) this lead to multiple near missed with a semi-final in the 2006 WC, Finals loss in the 2008 Euros, another WC semi-final in 2010 and a Euros semi-final in 2012, a bunch of near misses but everything came together in 2014 where their young talented squad peaked and won the World Cup. England is at an impasse, they clearly have great quality and talent in their team now with good cohesion but they are struggling to get over the hump for one reason or another, they need to be more ruthless and efficient, especially when coming up against the elite like France otherwise there will be more tournament heartbreak. Ultimately England has a good chance to end their tournament win wait in the next decade, it seems the current crop of talent will peak around the next World Cup but you often need more than just quality to win these tournaments, whether England makes it to the promised land is another issue.,
As an argentinian, let me tell you this from experience: you DON'T want to scapegoat your young talents by blaming them over missed penalties and such. We wasted a lot of potential in the 2010s because of mistreating and blaming the players (particularly due to the 3 consecutive lost finals) and we had to wait until the 2020s for only SOME of them (others have retired) to get a satisfying closure with the World Cup. We're happy now, but we're also left wondering if they could've given us more trophies, had we subjected them to less intense scrutiny in the past.
Thats not true. They were to blame. Choke after choke for a decade. And we had talent but all up front, no defense or world class midfielders. Also Brazil was at its weakest in the 2010s so we had a golden opportunity to win it all in South America and the world cup but could not achieve anything.
@@87crimson Brazil was weak but Spain and Germany were too strong at the beginning of the 2010s. After what happened to CAMEROON in 1990. Cameroonians said england will not win a major competition like the world cup again. Because ENGLAND/REFEREE CHEATED CAMEROON THAT MATCH.
As an Englishman it's really refreshing to see a balanced view on the England teams history instead of the usual tropes of, 'England are so arrogant, they think they're going to win' - and living in England, I can honestly say that the pessimists significantly outweigh the optimists. Good information and brilliantly presented. You've got a like and subscribe from me.
Hum I don't know of I'm in a good place to talk but as a French hearing and seeing thing like "it's coming home" or having your tabloids buying every square of ads to taunt us about your possible victory might be a little hint about that question about arrogance...(I wont even mention the number of times when some english speaker told that our league is trash while you buy all of our player from here if possible 🤷🏻♀️)
Perhaps, just perhaps, your experience with the English and the tabloids ( you really think that represents anyone other than the bottom of society?) does not represent a majority? I live in this country and most people I talked to at the last game were very withheld in their optimism or just put it on as a joke
@@Lostouille I agree "it's coming home" may smack of arrogance but from my experience that is purely a tongue and cheek reference to the song. I realise I don't speak for everyone but among my friends and family noone expects anything yet we still sing the song and say it ironically. I think when taken at face value it can be seen as arrogant but here it's just a song (from my experience) and the irony is the song is that its saying we are going to fail "Everyone seems to know the score They've seen it all before They just know They're so sure That England's gonna throw it away Gonna blow it away" While it goes on to be more optimistic I feel this is largely the British view. The one thing I would say could contradict this is that song goes on to be more optimistic but in a very dream like way, "Never stopped me dreaming". So if it has been picked up in sincere light, I would say the song actually implies it is a dream like state. Positive yes but not arrogant as it saying despite how rubbish we are, we are still dreaming of winning it and the sport "coming home". Also the idea of it coming home is not an implication that we 'own' the sport, more a nod to the fact it was officially created in the country. That was so long ago though that we don't even recognise it from then. So with all that said I would say that I see it less as an arrogant declaration of domination or brilliance but instead a hopeful yet pained jokey reference to a song saying that we will fail. We aren't trying to own the game we are just praying that we won't be as rubbish as we have been continuously for decades. (This is just based on my experience and is not meant to be true for everyone in the country)
The 1950 USA Team was NOT made up of mostly British expats with only Ed McIlvenny a Scot who played for Morton in the Scottish Junior League and 7 games for Wrexham who were in the 3rd Division North. Five players were from the Hill Area in St Louis, a predominantly Italian neighbourhood where they played for local teams, thus 4 of the 5 were of Italian Heritage. Gaetjens as you mentioned was born in Port-au-Prince. Joe Maca was born in Brussels and had played in the Belgian Second Division. Two were of Portuguese, probably Azorean descent from Massachusetts and the last was from Philadelphia of German descent.
Because the only thing that never changes at the England setup, the FA itself. Always go for mediocre managers and is happy with not winning tournaments. Pundits also don't help when they praise teams for achieving literally nothing despite the world class talent they have
that is one of the big problems, people in the FA concerned mostly of not losing their job. in doing so they employ yes men. a reason why Brian clough, arguably the best English manager, was never selected.
Your last 5 words also form part of the problem. The amount of "World Class" talent in the team....look at the team that lost to France....how many of them would get into a "World team"? maybe Bellingham (although he'd likely start on the bench) the rest, and yes I include H.Kane are good, top class EPL players, but "World Class"... Would you swap Foden for Griezmann???...does England have a player like him or Modric...a No10 who sits and orchestrates?....Kane has been lauded for a good few years now, yet when the time comes for him to show the World what he has...he vanishes....a flat track bully scoring freely against lower ranked teams and...2 penalties in a game though...oh that's too much to handle...funny how a few days later Mbappe (a few years younger) manages 3.....time to realise England are a good international team...but nothing special
@Paul Franklin I don't think I was clear. By World Class talent I mean young players with the potential to be the best in the world, not that they're currently the best. Foden, Bellingham, Trent etc.
@Paul Franklin I agree with your point about Kane he is a ghost in most games with any sort of significance. But experienced and high quality players there who have win trophies with their clubs are there and Southgate does not utilise them in the correct way at all. I just feel that with a manager who's done nothing as a coach and who has consistently shown that he's out of his depth, combined with the fact that the team is captained by a man who's bottled every single chance at silverware he's had, this very deep and very talented squad is doomed to fail
It’s literally like being a spurs fan. England do actually have some great players but something always seems to go wrong. Sunderland are just a bit shite
Great video! Just wanted to add that the hooliganism stereotype doesn't just come from football and it's not a vocal minority thing. Us in southern europe are used to English tourists coming for holidays and mistreating staff, breaking property, not being able to handle their alcohol, and being violent.
I know you were mainly focused on the performance of the english team at the world cups, but I feel like you could've mentioned the 1953 friendly match against Hungary dubbed the match of the century, in which the Hungarian team humbled England 6-3 at Wembley. That game was just as impactful in the English people's perception of the national team as the 1-0 defeat against the USA in 1950.
After what happened to CAMEROON in 1990. Cameroonians said england will not win a major competition like the world cup. Because ENGLAND/REFEREE CHEATED CAMEROON THAT MATCH.
@justinchetham-strode5234 There was cheating. Leniker was diving all over the place. And the reffs were buying it. England got two straight penalties from the reff to help them win. It was pure CHEATING.
Distrust of creativity is the very reason England didn't make it far in major tournaments. What is wrong by having creative players in the first 11? Every multiple winning national teams have it.
France with Griezmann, Argentina with Messi, Croatia with Modric, just to name a few. Germany didn't have a creative/creator in their starting XI, maybe that's also why they lose. The 2014 Germany had Ozil and Kroos (also Reus, although unfortunate with injury), then the 2010~2012 Spain that full chock of playmakers in their midfield (Iniesta, Xavi, David Silva, Isco, Fabregas, Pedro, etc)
@@HenSt-gz7qj the biggest irony is Xavi's idol and role model is Matt Le Tissier, the very player whose type is the very thing English football despised.
Southgate bought James Maddison to this world cup but didn't even give him a kick of the ball... having an AM player is definitely not his plan A yet he rarely has a plan B.

Originally it was down to the style of play, but now I think it’s more because Southgate is so scared of losing. Russia was a back 5 and 2 holding midfielders. Qatar was slow CBs and no creative CM. Bellingham is a wonderful midfielder but he will be a great box to box player. He won’t be creating all the chances.
27:40 this is how england viewed it yes. meanwhile in spain at elclassico's ramos and pique nearly killed each other several times but for the national team they managed to funtcion as a solid backline somehow XDDDDD
Maybe historically that’s true but football RUclips has already criticised Southgate for not using England’s creative players properly, which this video touches on.
I used to live in Montenegro and when they came to play us for the qualification and ended up drawing we all went crazy. I was on the second level and it took two hours to leave and the entire stadium ended up having to be evacuated. To beat a team of such high regard no person who lived in that moment will ever forget it. I met Rooney and he was running out onto the bus and yelled inside for two minutes straight to everyone
As long as I can remember (1966 is faint, but from then on), England have always failed for three reasons: 1. Their players were simply not good enough, particularly in the technical and tactical departments. 2. They have almost never played like a team. Either the players disliked each other and/or the few really good players were not allowed to perform in their best positions. 3. If you look at the list of managers that have coached the team, you realize that they were almost always afraid of playing a good game because they might lose and face heavy criticism. However, they all eventually lost and had to face the music. As a neutral observer, this is fun because you can watch and read a lot about England's failures in colorful reports. The games, however, are another matter: at the Euro 2024 England reached new lows when it came to playing. Watching any of their games was mind-numbingly boring and at the same time shockingly familiar. If England chose to go out with a bang rather than a whimper, more people would respect them. As it is, the fun only starts once they have been eliminated 😊.
I actually think its the otherway with Southgate. I feel he is protected by having so much talent around him. He fluffed the Euro's and he fluffed the WC - both from player management. He says and acts in a way that the media (and the FA) likes
I personally like Southgate he’s done so much for our squad not just getting us further than any other manager since we won the wc but also breaking the tension and bitter rivalries beckhams gen had, they all seems like they are good friends on and off the pitch which has 100% helped us
You can win tournaments with that kind of coach though, so don't lose the hope. Vicente Del Bosque won WC and EuroCup and it's considered a "tool" in the hands of the players. I'm not speaking personally, but many people seem to agree Del Bosque inhereted a team and a playstyle from Luis Aragonés, the previous coach who made the radical changes (like leaving Raúl out of the 2008 Euro) and had real "character", against the media (he was a legend of Atlético, while Del Bosque was from Real Madrid, and the media favours Real Madrid, like A LOT). Even though he won big titles with Real Madrid, he was busted by Florentino Pérez. And even now, there were some leaked audios of Real Madrid's president from a corrupt cop in prison, and in one of them Florentino said himself Del Bosque wasn't a coach. Not even a good coach, not even a coach, and that's why he was fired from Besitkas. But even then, the results speak from themselves in both cases. I hope you lose every single major tournament you're in, to be honest I despise England National Team and celebrate every embarassment they perform. But take it from one of your enemies, sooner or later (and I think sooner rather than later) England will win the World Cup. I mean, once people joke about Spain choking and losing in the quarter finals for decades too. Both teams are very similar. Like England, they were our embarassment time and time again, always coming short. And then we won three titles, in a row, with a team that will be remembered in years to come as one of the best teams in history.
Southgate wasn't good enough in the Premier League, there's absolutely no chance England win a trophy as long as he is their manager. I mean look at some of his decisions during the 2022 World Cup; 1) No Ivan Toney in the squad despite being one of the best strikers in the Premier League at the moment. Fair enough if he's on the bench but not even making the squad was ridiculous. No Tammy Abraham was another questionable decision 2) Southgate has way too many favourites. Raheem Sterling had been awful at Chelsea and his form has been on a downhill trajectory for a while now and yet Southgate constantly picks him. Kalvin Phillips barely played at Man City and Pep called him overweight and he still makes the squad 3) Trent sitting on the bench. He's by far England's most creative player and one of the best attacking threats in world football and you shove him on the bench... Even if you acknowledge his weak defending, you can still work around that. Regardless of form, Trent is a generational talent you should be building your squad around. Play him as a wingback with 3 at the back. Play him as an inverted fullback and play with a box midfield. Play him in midfield. Do something at least Yes Trent until the very end of the 22/23 season was in poor form, but since Southgate always picks Maguire, it's not like form plays an important role in who makes the squad It's things like that which is why I have zero faith that Southgate will win a trophy with England
9:28 thank you for teaching me that Wins in the 60s used to count as 2 points and not 3. It is interesting to see how many things have changed in the beautiful game over time. Great work!

Good video - I liked your analysis of 2010 as I agree England were very unlucky and yet all everyone remembers is they got thrashed …most disappointing thing about England this century until recently is how they stopped going out with a fight - eg 2002….at least in the 1980/90s we’d always go out with a gallant defeat (or in 1982, no defeat at all!!)
Have to say that while it definitely used to be true that England fans (mostly as caricatured by the media) used to believe England should win the world cup, I don't think it's true now. Paradoxically as we've become more consistent in the last 5 years, the expectation of winning has become less. As ever in England, this is less to do with what real fans ( who are generally quite knowledgeable about the game and our limitations) and ALOT to do with our insane and stupid media who see an opportunity to make money out of our participation in international tournaments.
England has the squad but not the spirit to win a major trophy. Bring on a character that can bring that winning spirit not just a nice dude. This team needs a killer instinct, that’s what they lacked against France. Attitude is what makes a team winning, not just a group of good players. 2026 looks promising for you guys. Coming from a Frenchman. Cheers
Sorry but England don't have no way near enough talent to win the world cup. While they have highly talented players, they DON'T have great players, that's the difference. And they never have. I think a big problem with England is we over rate our talent. But if you think about the previous world champions and the players they've produced, they're all FAR better than any English player that's ever played the game. Messi, Mbappe, Iniesta, Xavi, busquets, canavaro, Nesta, pirlo, Ronaldo, ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Romario, Zidane. I could go on but I think it's obvious that players like Saka and Foden are NOWHERE near that level. And that's the calibre of player you need in order to win the World cup.
@@lyrickoner You do not need players of the highest quality level to win a world cup. Examples? Uruguay 1950, Germany 1954, 1974, 2014, Argentina 1978, Italy 1982. These teams were not the most skilled ones in the respective tournament but they made it up with mentality and ruthlessness. The national team of my country, Germany, played eight world cup finals and they were considered favorites in only two of them, 1990 and 2014. In two of the finals Germany won they were the underdog but overcame the better skills of Hungary and Netherlands. If it were just the skills that matter there would be just one world champion ever and that would be Brazil.

In recent tournaments, we have mainly left tournaments feeling embarrassed until the last few where it ended in heartbreak World Cup 2014 - Very little expectations under Roy Hodgson but we knew we were shit. Then ended up being embarrassed despite the low expectations with a group stage exit and an embarrassing loss to Costa Rica. Euro 2016 - Very little expectations again. We looked very absolutely shambolic under Roy Hodgson. We struggled in the easiest group in the tournament. We managed to get through. Then we hit a new low when we got knocked out by Iceland. Another embarrassment and a new low in English football World Cup 2018 - We had a new manager and nobody knew what to expect. We got to a semi final which was good. But obviously we bottled it on the final hurdle when we played Croatia and ended up 2-1 in extra time after initially winning 1-0 Euro 2021 - We had high expectations. We were looking good under Southgate and we felt like we had a chance of winning it. We got to the final for the first time in 55 years. Once again we bottled it in the last hurdle vs Italy. We were 1-0 up, got pegged back to 1-1 and then ended up losing on penalties. World Cup 2022 - We were looking like an outside favourite until we played France. We went 1-0 down, equalised, then went 2-1 down and then we missed a penalty which lost us the game. Heartbreaking but not surprising. We always seem to bottle it at the last hurdle due to bottle a winning advantage or missing a penalty/losing a penalty shootout. I remain hopeful for the future though. Come on England!
@@hmst2434 when was the EPPP first implemented? I think it might be similar to the German NLZ (Nachwuchsleistungszentrum = Youth Development Centres) which was implemented in 2000. So add 14 years on that and you might get when England can compete for the World Cup
@@mikam1344 It was in 2011 I believe. And yes one of the primary inspirations was the German NLZ as well as the French elite footballing schools such as Clairfontaine and their methods of nurturing young players.
I've been watching football for what feels like an eternity, and yes, my first World Cup was 66' albeit, I don't remember much except the final. Every single time it never felt like that team that was playing the absolute best, was going to, without a doubt, win it. It doesn't take a team that is playing incredibly superior to the rest, to win it, but rather it's a group of teams that are playing at a good, even decent level, and one of them has all the planets align for them in that moment. England, much like say, Netherlands, have always played good football and they've always hovered among the top, but luck hasn't smiled upon them much. Keep that level, one day it'll come. I don't think football will cease to exist, it's not like a race to see who wins more, but a question of patience. Argentina showed us just that, that you don't have to have a star-studded lineup or a golden generation of players, to be able to aspire to winning the Cup, just the hunger and will to obtain it and yes, some high level footy
England just isn’t a top team in international football, they are a mid top 20 team but certainly not in the top 5. They should be very happy with second place at the Euros and 4th at the 2018 World Cup, thanks to lucky draws, it’s more than what they deserve given how they play. The expectation that they ought to be winning these things is just weird.
It's mostly the pundits and newspapers who hype the team up every time a tournament comes around. I think most the the normal people say lets see for far we go this time.
@@pratosaurusrex1128 Yeah, and these same people will turn around and say how much a team deserves to win the world cup, or how a team looks unstoppable (I don't disagree sometimes, but outside of shit rags like the Sun, I hardly see English fans say stuff like "Kane looks unstoppable, no one can touch England). I don't really see arrogance in most nations' fans, at least not significantly more than others.
If I recall, England ensured that teams had to travel by bus further than necessary by changing pitches where the cup games were held for an advantage. Portugal had to travel several hours to the games and that undoubtedly helped England win. Only reason they beat a Eusebio driven Portugal if its to be believed.
This England team has one glaring fault that is similar to Tottenham's. The leading goalscrorer rarely gets himself into a goalscoring position. Our widemen consistently get into excellent crossing positions but have to cross to each other or come inside to take a shot themselves. Harry is usually nowhere to be seen. He is usually playing so deep that he cannot get into the box quickly enough to finish good moves.
@@JurgenKranz he also blew a shot from pointless range when he had the whole right side to himself and could progress into the box, and repeatedly lost possession . the 1 pen he created doesnt make up for it
if you are going to bring up the moderate success in CL in the 2000s, I think it's only fair to bring up the much larger success in the 70s and 80s until Heysel. England dominated with mostly English players while the 2000s were much more diverse squads. The early 2000s success was nothing close to going to the achievement of 8 finals in 9 years and winning 7. The international failure then was far more disappointing than the not so golden generation.

I think that England in international tournaments gets about as far as they should with the teams they have. If you take away Spains wc win 2010, only 5 different countries have won a wc since 1970. Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany and France. That's it. And all those countries imo have just had more talented teams more often than England.
The english media has an odd "loser mentality" of low expectations. Getting to a quarter or semi is "good enough" and it has been like that for a long time. Another big factor is Southgate. The man has experience managing Middlesbourg and thats it. Compare him to a manager like Deschamps or Luis Enrique and he just doesnt cut it. The English FA needs to bring in someone with the experience and grit if they want to win.
But with that is, English fa/pundits only want England manager which I'm not sure any English manager has a champions league trophy other Sir Alex but he's Scottish. If England really wanna want to win, they gonna bring in championship caliber manager and not managers like southgate
We already did that with eriksson and capello (who both managed our golden generation that were a better squad than the current team) and we didn’t do any better with highly rated foreign managers than with English ones.
Tbf, the english FA has to be concerned about Public relations as much as the next biggest teams in the world. At times, the relationship between the FA, the media, the management and the public has been terrible, and that is bad for the morale of all concerned. The FA have managed to address this issue somewhat with Southgate, so even though he is not a good enough manager I understand why they're concerned with keeping the fix in place, and not going back to the past where the media produced hit jobs on the players and managers and the fans fell out with the players as soon as they went out of a tournament.
@@sirsurnamethefirstofhisnam7986 Capello and Eriksson were dealing with different circumstances to today. Most of the squad played for big rivals in the Premier league and were not willing to drop their club mentality when playing for the country. No manager could break that divide down. Gonna be honest, as an Argentinian it bafles me how y'all have such much quality talent but never can amount to nothing sadly. Idk what it is. Maybe is tha little bit extra that others countries have like Germany, Brazil or Argentina itself. Hopefully you can solve it in the future, because football its great when big countries are good. Cheers from a world champion.
It’s because they don’t have creative midfielders and a good manager. England has a very good team but they don’t have the worlds best players. Argentina has messi, France has mbappe, Spain has xavi and iniesta. Brazil has neymar and had players like Ronaldinho and Ronaldo in the past. There’s only 1 position where i think England has the worlds best player and that’s at right back.
English players and teams get hyped up a lot by being in the Premiership, which is flush with cash sucking in international talent. It creates the illusion that the local players are better than they are. If the Premier was an ordinary leauge (like say Portugal, or Germany) we would only see a handful of names, the true standouts, get the spotlight.. and if they had to immigrate to other countries even less still.
The disappointing familiar feeling I know too well after seeing us exit a tournament every 2 years. Euro 96 - Gazza doesn’t get on the end of it and we lose on pens World Cup 98 - Beckham red card lose on pens Euro 2000 - We lose a game last minute where we only needed to draw to go through the group World Cup 2002 - lose to the best team in the tournament to a freak free kick Euro 2004 - Rooney injured lose a tight game on pens World Cup 2006 - Rooney sent off lose on pens again Euro 2008 - did not qualify and stuck a rookie keeper in goal for a game we only needed to draw against a team that already qualified World Cup 2010 - goal over the line not given but probably we’re going to get stuffed 4-1 anyway Euro 2012 - scrape into a penalty shootout and maybe this time we might sneak through but no same old story World Cup 2014 - weakest England squad in my lifetime to go to World Cup and out before matchday 3 in the group. Euro 2016 - lose to a team with population same size as Coventry. Player for player inexplicable but we would have lost to France anyway had we gotten through. World Cup 2018 - sneak into the lead but get overrun in midfield by superior technicians Euro 2020 - take the lead and sit back and it goes to penalties you know what happens next. World Cup 2022 - Kane skies it and though we did okay we lose to a French team with many key players missing.
Don’t think anyone did tbh. It was a weak squad on paper. We scored a lot of set piece goals and the back 3 with wing backs really worked to a point in the tournament
@@francolive5718 yeah it was the second youngest squad in the tournament I think and possibly the least experienced, personally I enjoyed that summer, and we also broke through several historical barriers like our awful record in penalty shootouts and our dismal record in opening games
And if you were older you'd remember the 90 wc semi final loss in shootout to eventual Champs West Germany when Waddle I believe it was, launched the ball over the cross bar and into space making Kane's miss vs France look like a good shot lol. They've been close just can't get over the hump mainly bc they often run into better teams.
Nice one bro. My thought is this, England should build a team that suits a certain philosophy by picking the best suited players at each position rather than big names thrown together to form a team. The hype does nothing to help tournament football. Have a team of players who are very good in their own role and then have alternatives on the bench. Get a coach who’s flexible with his tactics and can maximize the potentials at his disposal. If Jude is box to box, what’s Henderson’a role? If Foden is deployed as a wide left, why choose a left back that’s not so strong in defense. A team wins and not a collection of individual hyped up names. The good thing is that England has the ingredients. Bellingham should be deployed for specific reasons and not be a jack/of-all-trades. England also needs a skilled creative player in the middle. I don’t know any Englishman that fits that mold. The closest is the Leicester guy for me. Good luck
Argentina waited for 36 years despite having the greatest player who ever lived and bringing great squads time after time. Dont lose faith and keep supporting your team the time will come when you rise the cup once again.
Congratulations on yet another great video! The criticisms of Southgate that hold weight are around his tactical choices in big games. Unfortunately for Gareth, he's learning on the job. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he's never had a big job before and never had to make these kinds of big decisions before. Unfortunately, now there is an attitude that has started to emerge of the team doing well in spite of him, which I think is insulting. Part of being a manager is having a team that wants to play for you, and this team clearly does. England will have greater successes, which probably won't be under Southgate, but time will be kinder to him in the long run.
I think the days of the English expecting their national team to win a cup are long gone. I never hear anyone saying they expect england to win it, in fact it is the exact opposite as all you hear is the expectation of England under performing.
Not really lol. Disappointment again but was it that bad ??? France will probably go on to win the tournament and we outplayed them We have one of the best quality sides in the world, an experienced manager. It’s not hopeless like people make out And explain to me how this WC was an underperformance lol?
@@TurboGauchiste not really, the narrative that open play goals = played better is a more oversimplified narrative After the shakey first minutes and after tchoucha scored England controlled the game and frequently had high quality passages of play. Some leading to extraordinary saves from Lloris and 2 of which leading to deserved penalties. Let’s not even get into that the first goal shouldn’t have stood, but none of the officials seen so …
The weird thing is that we have lost to three teams that have all been better than us, and yet that upsets us deeply for some reason. In what other sport does that happen? It's normal for the better team / individual to win. If we want to be the best then we have to actually be the best.
It's the way we performed in those games. Easily the better team against France, losing out on luck is heartbreaking. Like the final with Italy. And the semi where we got the first goal. It's so near yet so far.
@@jordan_roadhouse4798agree. England have a habit of just missing out by narrowest of margins. Gascoigne against Germany in 96, Ronaldinho’s freak goal in 2002, not to mention the numerous penalty shootouts.
I am Argentinean, and I was supporting England in the play-offs as my second team. It is a team that plays beautiful football. I was hoping for great final Argentina Vs England. Maybe we can witness it next time. Greetings from Buenos Aires
You know beating France in a world cup final holds 5 times more value than beating England in a final especially that France was the previous world cup winners
England is this really messy case to watch, especially to me as a German, because they always just tend to have this air of... arrogance to them. I don't necessarily mean the players or the teams, I barely pay attention to them, but more like the press and pundits, who keep hyping up England before any tournament, act like they are better than the rest of the world (while mostly confusing that it's the Premier League that's actually drawing attention, and even then not necessarily on its own merits given the external cashflow going into the Premier League itself), the constant "It's coming home!" every single time... it just gets annoying over time. And that's even before getting into the Germany specific context. To this day they still can't stop with the World War 2 references when it comes to matches with Germany, a tradition that got old long, long ago and is just tasteless. Or how they hype themselves up to be this really big rival of ours when we don't even want anything to do with them (for us, that's the Netherlands, and to a lesser degree Italy). And they. Just. Won't. Shut. Up. About. It. Seriously. I'll admit, under that context, watching England fail and come short so often is a little bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, even after what happened at Euro '21. But honestly? I just wish the media would be quieter. Stop piling as much pressure on the team. Usually the title comes when you least expect it, and just the reputation of 'the birth country of football' alone ain't pulling much anymore on the international stage, where even the former smaller countries are actually getting stronger. Things like Croatia reaching the last four for the second time in a row, or Morocco of all countries reaching the semis more than proves that. Let the team breathe. But of course, the press won't let them. And I feel like even at upcoming tournaments, that's going to be a big reason as to why England will keep bottling it.
Right so here's the problem. No one is forcing you to watch our media or listen to our pundits. You have your own sports media in Germany which are you are perfectly capable of sticking to and ignoring ours. But for some reason you insist on paying attention to ours. My first response to your criticisms is just to think "if you don't like it then why are you even paying attention?" No one in England cares what the German media were saying about their team's chances or are interpreting that as some kind of personal insult. It's absolutely bizarre that you and the rest o the world pays so much attention to what our media says if you hate it so much. I could understand this when it comes to the coverage of the Premier League but not in international tournaments. I also don't even think we are that arrogant either. You can certainly say that we are hopeful or optimistic, perhaps even to an unrealistic degree. But how exactly this qualifies as arrogance I don't know. I actually think our media has been fairly even about our chances this tournament. No one has said we have the best squad in the world. We think we have a talented squad that is good enough to win it, which is really all that matters, and we were obviously hoping that we would this time. Also, we haven't won anything in 50 years, despite coming very close at times so of course we are "impatient" to win something for want of a better word. But they haven't really been that pressurising or hyping either in my opinion, it's just that for some reason everyone interprets anything positive or optimistic about our chances as that. If we had beaten France we probably would have made it to the final, and it was a pretty even game too. Finally you say you enjoy watching us fail? Don't worry, I can assure you it's mutual. I had a good laugh seeing Germany go out in the groups twice in a row.
@t0mkat Does he (or she) know the song "coming home" is satire, and didn't the Germans adopt it after they won Euro 96? 🤔 and they played that song during the 2006 World Cup? Else, he comes off as arrogant 🙄
@GogledholDin Exactly not to mention that some of the Moroccan fans' behaviour outside Qatar was disgraceful when they rioted in several Dutch, Belgian and French cities after their matches and hell a 14-year old boy got killed in Montpellier compare that to the euro final at Wembley, obviously not all Moroccan fans they acknowledged it but what they did was much worse.
@@DeadlyV1RU5 since you have the luck to have the most spoken language on earth and for that reason don't have to learn different ones, your press and media is omnipresent, especially on RUclips. The point the main comment makes is that you just continue with that World war references. Even your Coach said after the game in 2021 that this past played a role for him in the game, while we Germans have changed and would just like to go on and leave this dark chapter behind. For no other countries this is so present than in yours. As long as you don't stop this, many Germans will wish you nothing but failure in your tournaments. I understand that this is mutual. As the other comments stated, our rivals are actually Italy and Netherlands. Btw I thought you could make it this time but bottled it like always.
I said this, England are not as good together as we'd like. Time and time again during this world Cup, England will let us down and as they always do, people thought I was just being negative. Thing is, we went through the group stages easily, but really and truly, what strong team did we play, the best team we played during that time was USA and even with that, it was a disappointing draw. And I'm top of that, people now thought that we had a chance against France, because somehow, England are now as good as them? That's why when England lost that game, I wasn't too disappointed because it was already expected. When it comes to England playing matches, it's just better to watch the women's team.
I think it's a national psyche when it comes to football. They used to have the same thing in France some time ago. Great players but constantly falling at the last hurdle. Player for player our squad is definitely up there. We perhaps lack that one 'x factor player' though, just look at France and Argentina.
Argentina and France have the 2 best players in the entire world though.. That talent is much more than an x factor. The odds of getting a player that is top 2 in the world coming from ANY nation, nevermind England would be so rare; coming close to impossible...
Come on dude, don't be so hard on yourselves. Here in Argentina we also criticized a lot our players (we even called Messi "pecho frío", because of him underperforming in the national team) and our DT, our team played questionably from 2010 to 2018. Nowadays we are happy with our team because finally our boys played at 100% and they listened to the people, we wanted new fresh players and a good and not corrupt DT. Sorry for my English btw.
yeah but you failed to mention in the 1966 world cup they decided to channge the stadium and made the portuguese travel over night... from liverpool to london
As an Uruguayan, I can tell you than here there are amateur neighbourhood teams, usually group in cities, league know as baby-fútbol (baby-football), for kids from 6 to 13 if I'm not mistaken, in mostly public fields ... in my time most didn't have grass more like hard dirt (In Montevideo the capital of 1.5M there are about 80) and the parents of the kids pay a little monthly feed that mostly goes to pay the coach and balls and the parents involve in the club do it for free of course. Scouts from the pro clubs will then select kids from their clubs witch also have. Also kids from low income neighbourhood have open spaces to play like squares (plazas). Do kinds of low income families in big cities in England have public spaces to play football or something like baby-football???
As this video has shown, I can understand the dislike of England by other nations back up to the 60s. The FA were hugely arrogant about their position compared to other nations. But I also feel that today fans of other nations see English media and The FA and use that to tarnish all England fans as arrogant. We’re not. We just back our team. How is that different from a Spaniard backing Spain, or a Dutch person backing The Netherlands? We also have hypocrites telling us we only get easy groups in tournaments but then we get called arrogant when we expect to beat a Sweden or Senegal… which is it?
I know many would believe that, what I'm about to say is lies... as I'm Argentinian, but truth is: I always loved England. I had the chance of living in the UK and even got my papers to get a job and be able to stay... And I made mistakes. Couldn't stay any longer and had to return (a thing I still regret to this day). But, that's not the point... As this is about football: the sport I love so much. Just making and thinking of a sort of summary of all this is... I saw England's match against France. And I thought England was going to take them down. I'm no kidding. Why, you may ask? Well, simple: I saw what I saw in general from various players and young talents that... They had what it took to possibly take the reigning champions (at that moment) down. And I still believe that they have a lot of potential. Just have faith and trust. I can tell you that nobody, 10 years ago would've thought of some manager who could've given Argentina 3 titles in 17 months. And specially when we were always losing and being shattered for more than 2 decades. If it happened here with a non existant local league, a disastrous federation (no, Scaloni and his team are not part of that... That's why they won) and a country that is falling apart in every single aspect... Why wouldn't you be able to get farther than us? And no, it's not a matter if you have Messi on your team or not. It's a matter of a future project, finding the right connections (only player I don't like is Maguire... and whoever is a follower or fan of him, sorry but I can't believe how did he get so far being so bad) and to support as much as possible the people behind that project. You don't have an idea of how rude, critical and harmful media and journalism were to Messi almost all of his career in here... However, the same bastards that criticized him, are now asking for forgiveness for all the bad things they said about him, Scaloni and all the team's work. Again: I believe England's has a lot of potential. Just have faith as I had in this whole project and how it developed during the years. My best wishes for everyone and I hope I get to be there again someday, even if it's for a few days. Cheers!
I'm 2 months late but as an Argentinian who loves the UK, how do you feel about the hand of god? most football fans here in the UK, even those born well after 1986 appreciate Maradona as an outstanding footballer, but hold animosity towards him and the Argentinian side towards the cheating. its in the same vein of Henry's handball against Ireland, or Suarez's handball against Ghana. thank you for your kind words about English football and our national team! I'm a 5th gen arsenal fan and seeing Saka, a local boy, Ramsdale and White playing for the England side and being so young always gives me hope for the future. when the squad matures and hit their peak, because the stars of the side (Bellingham, Mount, Rice, Saka, even unsung heroes like Tomori, White and more) are ranging from late teenagers to mid twenties and they're already playing amazing football. it's unusual for a brit to say this, because we're the most pessimistic people alive (contrary to the "its coming home" world view everyone has about England fans) I actually have hope for the future.
The problem with England is very easy to simplify. We employ ultra defensive/limited coaches for a team dominated by very good attackers. In teams full of world class attackers like Gerrard, Lampard, Kane, Rooney, Scholes why do we have this obsession of installing defensive managers?
Croatia has 3 semis and 1 finals appearance in the last 24y or 6 WCs. England has 3 semis and 1 finals appearance over the last 72y or 18 WCs. They won 1 though, just to be fair. Still unbelievable though 😁
@@EliasRoyEngland has literally 10+ times the population. What Croatia have achieved is remarkable. They have been better than us over the years. Fact.
It's funny really, even though I don't remember 1990 or 1996 as I was either not born or only 2 years old in the case of 96, those games against you still live on in English football folklore, probably because for once, it looked like we actually had a chance of winning a tournament, we played well albeit a bit lucky at times and then put in our best performances against you and lost. Germany has that winning mentality, and in England we love the idea and romance of (if that's the right word) "Heroic failure", "If only Waddle had scored and not hit the post", "If only that free kick hadn't deflected and Shilton saved it", "if only Gazza was a foot taller he would have scored the golden goal", "If only beckham didn't get sent off", "If only Seaman was a bit taller" etc. I think as much as we'd love to see our national team win tournaments (Who wouldn't) theirs a kind of guilty pleasure with "heroic failure" and "The plucky loser" who gives it his all against the odds but comes up a bit short against the opponent we love seeing when we reminisce about Italia 90 or Euro 96 which is quite interesting to observe. We are so use to "all those oh so nears, wear you down through the years" as is said in the three lions song, that part of me thinks, if we actually do win something, of course people will celebrate but deep down nobody will know how to react as we are so use to disappointment and embarrassment with our national team, the idea of actually winning is something most people in the country in relation to our national team, has never seen before (sadly). The common thing is "Remember the team of ........ (insert tournament here), that team could have won the tournament with a bit of luck!" through so many different generations, everyone has their England team. I imagine, it might be hard in a way to explain to a German because you guys know exactly how it is to win tournaments, you have a ruthlessness when you need to (7-1 against Brazil for instance) unlike us and the idea of going even 10 years or longer without winning a tournament is seen as somewhat like a national team crime lol. So the idea you'd have to wait 60 years is unthinkable whereas for us, it's the old expression, "it's the hope that kills you". We go through periods like Brazil in 2014 or Iceland in 2016 and it looks like all hope is lost, that we should just retire as a national team, we're not good enough and then from almost by accident and out of nowhere, we have a team that gives us hope again, that maybe, maybe we can win something until inevitably.... we don't :(. I hope this is changing now but who knows, either way, I'll keep supporting them like I have done most of my life.
@@j_james_01 haha no, but I enjoy thinking about 7 titles from 14 finals in WC and Euros. You can say what you want, England is super shit at international football 😉

A very well produced and informative video, though as an England fan it brought back some painful memories.😆We are serial chokers when it comes to missing penalties in pressure situations, with Harry Kane just the latest in a very long list.
The quote from Charles Sutcliffe makes absolute sense when you think about when he said it. England was the Rome of that era, now imagine a council telling Rome to accommodate other nations in the colosseum. It wouldn't slide.
The problem I notice with England is that they only beat teams that are worse then their level. They can never beat a team around their level or above.
I would actually disagree with saying England is in a bad position and disappointing. I'm from Germany and have seen how people can make fun of an objectively strong era. And I'm gonna be honest, England already is in a golden generation. 2018 World Cup: Lost in the semi-final to Croatia 2021 Euros: Lost in the final to Italy 2022 World Cup: Lost in the quarter finals to France, a massive favorite You can be annoyed at Southgate for making weird decisions, but people in Germany talked about Löw EXACTLY THE SAME, he always had massive critics and objectively created an extremely consistent team from 2006 to 2016. Southgates team has not won anything, but cup tournaments are ultimately very luck based. Considering this, I believe whatever he is doing, is working. I honestly hope you have an extremely competent alternative in mind, if you sack him now. Most teams (except France, Argentina and Brazil) could only dream of so much recent success. There is only a tournament every 2 years and there are other good teams. There are not many teams that win one or even two tournaments on international level back to back.
Southgate had the easiest run in the 2018 World Cup. As soon as we played a decent team (Belgium, Croatia) we lost. He also had the easiest run in the 2021 euros. The Germany team we beat is the worst German team I’ve seen. Again, as soon as we played a decent team, we lose to Italy. Same story in the 2022 World Cup. Cruise past most teams we play then as soon as we face real opposition (France) we lose. There is some real talent in this squad and it’s being wasted under Southgate.
@@DGAMINGDE Yes, there are. Of course, upsets are to be expected but there are consistently good teams and others, which are inconsistent or bad, due to lack of quality. As soon as England plays against a consistently good team, calamity ensues.
Difference is Germany have won 4 WCs and been in 4 more finals. Germany and other elite nations have bad periods but they always bounce back and go all the way. England have bad periods followed by decent results followed by more bad periods.

As an outsider I'm gonna say it: England was pretty decent and only lost to a very strong french team, just like they had lost against an insanely strong team from Brazil!
I'm a US fan (just want to do well and be respected), but the premier league is what got me into football in the first place. This video is more appropriate for the Netherlands perhaps than any other country when considering the quality of the teams they historically bring to these continental and global tournaments.
The Netherlands has unfortunately produced some of the best players ever far apart from one another. They had some unlucky breaks but it's been more spectacular individual players as opposed to teams absolutely stacked with talent across the pitch. Or maybe I'm just thinking of players like Cruyf, Van Persie, Robben Van der saar as the giants and overlooking the rest of their players. There is no doubt though that the Netherlands has produced some of the best players ever.
@@ecaeas4439 their squads in the 70's' late 80's and late 90's were stacked with world class players. Shouldve won a world cup with at least one of those generations.
@@ramonfrancois9306 You're right. I think it has to be said that talent is not always enough. Luck plays some part and the circumstances in each world cup are always different every year. It's like with England and everyone assuming England failed primarily for the exact same reasons throughout time, like lack of performance due to arrogance or overrated / not good enough players. Getting to the final consistently is a trait of winning teams. England have not been consistent features in finals and semi finals, like Brazil (7 time finalists, 4 times semi finalists, 6 times Quarter finalists) or Germany (8 time finalists, 5 time semi finalists, 3 time quarter finalists). England have failed to convert quarter final appearances into semi or final appearances because they have traditionally failed against big teams. The Netherlands probably should have won something and have probably underperformed, but they haven't made it consistently to finals or semis and have been absent from a lot of world cups.

Ultimately England has a good chance to end their tournament win wait in the next decade, it seems the current crop of talent will peak around the next World Cup but you often need more than just quality to win these tournaments, whether England makes it to the promised land is another issue.,
As a fan, we have had easy draws in the last 3 tournaments, as soon as we meet someone decent we go all spurs and bottle it.

Neither a brit nor a massive football fan and this is still fascinating. A very well put together sports doc.
@@willhowling955 never said that they represented everyone but if they are still around that munch then they must have at least a base of readers.
@@Lostouille I agree "it's coming home" may smack of arrogance but from my experience that is purely a tongue and cheek reference to the song. I realise I don't speak for everyone but among my friends and family noone expects anything yet we still sing the song and say it ironically.
I think when taken at face value it can be seen as arrogant but here it's just a song (from my experience) and the irony is the song is that its saying we are going to fail
"Everyone seems to know the score
They've seen it all before
They just know
They're so sure
That England's gonna throw it away
Gonna blow it away"
While it goes on to be more optimistic I feel this is largely the British view.
@@Lostouille Do French fans not want to win? I'm not English, but I don't understand what you mean. Every team's supporters want them to win.
The Portuguese were the Souza brothers, Ed and John. John was the team´s best scorer and the first American to be part of the tournament´s Best XI
@Paul Franklin and also I don't think 11 world class players are necessary. Look at Argentina. Solid goalkeeper and a decent squad with 1 star player.

As an English man, this video touches home on many truths we do our best to play ignorance too
Maybe historically that’s true but football RUclips has already criticised Southgate for not using England’s creative players properly, which this video touches on.
I really learn a lot about England's football history with this video. Thank you and cheers from Argentina.
As long as I can remember (1966 is faint, but from then on), England have always failed for three reasons:
@@oceanfive5 Those rivalries don;t exist to the extent they did then because there's not many English players in them teams.
Southgate wasn't good enough in the Premier League, there's absolutely no chance England win a trophy as long as he is their manager. I mean look at some of his decisions during the 2022 World Cup;
1) No Ivan Toney in the squad despite being one of the best strikers in the Premier League at the moment. Fair enough if he's on the bench but not even making the squad was ridiculous. No Tammy Abraham was another questionable decision
2) Southgate has way too many favourites. Raheem Sterling had been awful at Chelsea and his form has been on a downhill trajectory for a while now and yet Southgate constantly picks him. Kalvin Phillips barely played at Man City and Pep called him overweight and he still makes the squad
3) Trent sitting on the bench.
Do something at least
Yes Trent until the very end of the 22/23 season was in poor form, but since Southgate always picks Maguire, it's not like form plays an important role in who makes the squad
It's things like that which is why I have zero faith that Southgate will win a trophy with England

The quality of your videos has only grown recently, great analysis and research as always.
Cheers
Agreed. The spirit is lacking especially when tailing.
The national team of my country, Germany, played eight world cup finals and they were considered favorites in only two of them, 1990 and 2014. that Polish side was great, they beat Italy, Argentina and Brazil in '74.
In recent tournaments, we have mainly left tournaments feeling embarrassed until the last few where it ended in heartbreak
World Cup 2014 - Very little expectations under Roy Hodgson but we knew we were shit.
Another embarrassment and a new low in English football
World Cup 2018 - We had a new manager and nobody knew what to expect. We got to a semi final which was good. But obviously we bottled it on the final hurdle when we played Croatia and ended up 2-1 in extra time after initially winning 1-0
Euro 2021 - We had high expectations.

Luis Enrique does not compare to Deschamps

Most of the squad played for big rivals in the Premier league and were not willing to drop their club mentality when playing for the country. No manager could break that divide down. It had to disappear on it's own with a new generation of players.
I just wanted to say I appreciate the amount of research and work in general you put into making this video
Very good video mate, found it entertaining, truthful and at times amusing.
What a good point, true.
@@uzaidgurjee4798 What about Harry Kane at ST and for creative midfielders James Maddison
Euro 96 - Gazza doesn’t get on the end of it and we lose on pens
World Cup 98 - Beckham red card lose on pens
Euro 2000 - We lose a game last minute where we only needed to draw to go through the group
World Cup 2002 - lose to the best team in the tournament to a freak free kick
Euro 2004 - Rooney injured lose a tight game on pens
World Cup 2006 - Rooney sent off lose on pens again
Euro 2008 - did not qualify and stuck a rookie keeper in goal for a game we only needed to draw against a team that already qualified
World Cup 2010 - goal over the line not given but probably we’re going to get stuffed 4-1 anyway
Euro 2012 - scrape into a penalty shootout and maybe this time we might sneak through but no same old story
World Cup 2014 - weakest England squad in my lifetime to go to World Cup and out before matchday 3 in the group.
Euro 2016 - lose to a team with population same size as Coventry. Player for player inexplicable but we would have lost to France anyway had we gotten through.
World Cup 2018 - sneak into the lead but get overrun in midfield by superior technicians
Euro 2020 - take the lead and sit back and it goes to penalties you know what happens next.
World Cup 2022 - Kane skies it and though we did okay we lose to a French team with many key players missing.
To be fair I didn't expect anything in 2018, three of our starting players had less than 10 caps before the tournament started
Aware of all the failures before I was alive which paints a bleaker picture
The team is doing well in spite of him. If he were Wales manager, would he even have qualified?

The weird thing is that we have lost to three teams that have all been better than us, and yet that upsets us deeply for some reason. In what other sport does that happen? It's normal for the better team / individual to win. If we want to be the best then we have to actually be the best.
It's the way we performed in those games. Easily the better team against France, losing out on luck is heartbreaking. Like the final with Italy. And the semi where we got the first goal. It's so near yet so far.

Great video man! I hope you're right and England finally win a major trophy. Good analysis, and thoughts. Thank You.
Mbappe's second ever world cup final hat trick. Wild!
ONE World Cup TWO WORLD WARS

USA was not the best team, player for player the Welsh team is better
Yes we do. Loads of local clubs on cities and rural areas, and the parent pay a fee for the recourses and such.
This hits different after england lost another final

Excellent analysis 💯

@@EliasRoyEngland has literally 10+ times the population. What Croatia have achieved is remarkable. They have been better than us over the years. Fact.
As a German, I enjoyed every minute of this video

No, they were not like ancient Rome at that time. They just thought they were. WC 1950 was a rude awakening.
The problem I notice with England is that they only beat teams that are worse then their level. They can never beat a team around their level or above.

It won't be coming home anytime soon. Not with the same manager through 4 tournaments. Win or lose a refresh is always needed.
I would actually disagree with saying England is in a bad position and disappointing. I'm from Germany and have seen how people can make fun of an objectively strong era. And I'm gonna be honest, England already is in a golden generation.
2018 World Cup: Lost in the semi-final to Croatia
2021 Euros: Lost in the final to Italy
2022 World Cup: Lost in the quarter finals to France, a massive favorite
You can be annoyed at Southgate for making weird decisions, but people in Germany talked about Löw EXACTLY THE SAME, he always had massive critics and objectively created an extremely consistent team from 2006 to 2016.
