    Morata stood out for me, the movement to create space for others, "winning" fouls to give the team time, pressing, etc... A really unselfish performance for the team where he had little involvement with the ball.

      Yes, my grandfather opened my eyes to that just a few days ago. He told me how Morata is a good 9 for Spain since he attracts the defenders, pins them down, and gives the wingers freedom of movement in which they only have to dribble past one defender or two

    Kounde stop the over lapping because Spain started to feed Nico more and more over the top, it kept Kounde honest with his defensive responsibilities. Nico was more so the outlet on the breaks and France had to keep playing man to man with him. De la Fuente had the perfect game plan and the players executed to perfection. @@WilcorankingDecision making, shot variety... Please, this is not the NBA. It's not about individual matchups and creating the optimal situation for your 'shooters' to thrive in. This is about controlling the tempo of the game and knowing how to rotate your players so you are always surprising your rival. France is what you see, there's no more than it meets the eye, they play late 90s - early 2000s football and they have been getting away with it just because of their Athleticism and Mbappe's individual ability.

    • @Wilcoranking
      @Wilcoranking 2 месяца назад +1

      @@lucaspiredda7677 in every team sport decisions have be made . Mbappe dribbles when he shouldn't, ignores teammates in better scoring positions and shoots at awkward angles because he's almost always offcenter to the left. They would like to use him as a striker but that ship has sailed, he's played on the left for so long that's where he's most comfortable.
      He essentially takes the same shot over and over, inside of the right foot, curling to the far corner, many times taking it with a full instep shot low with either foot would have been more effective. His first time shooting and volleying is atrocious and for a player with his power and athleticism, his aerial ability is subpar, so yes,... Shot selection. Thanks removing all doubt 😁
      He's playing as a winger but has the attitude of striker, which doesn't help Muane or Thuram, seeing he mostly ignores them. So like I said before, he's a flawed player and unless Real Madrid reveamps completely how they play to suit him, it will a complete misfit.
      So your condescending dismissal notwithstanding, thems tha facts... SELAH 😎

    • @lucaspiredda7677
      @lucaspiredda7677 2 месяца назад

      @@Wilcoranking I completely agree that Mbappe is a misfit at Real Madrid and personally feel that he will flop there, Ancelotti is not this tactical genius that some youtube commenters try to make us think he is. However, Mbappe is neither a left winger nor a striker, but rather an inside forward or a second striker at best (if that's even a thing nowadays). He is most comfortable with a striker that knows how to hold up play and offload the ball to the wingers/inside midfielders that are running towards the goal, that's why the best modern France that we've seen is the 2018 WC winning side. Nevertheless, there is no footballing philosphy behind Deschamps's tactics, he's just a lucky man who was graced with probably the best football generation ever that a nation has ever produced (and it keeps on going). His bad decision making and the fact that he does not want to play as a striker through the middle is actually the end result of a process that wasn't planned, it just came to be. Mbappe is a very limited football player when it comes to moving freely throughout the attacking front and always takes shots by himself because he doesn't know anything else. He is what he is because the French NT/PSG curbed his footballing development.

  • @olivrobinson
    @olivrobinson 2 месяца назад +2

    Spain also seemed to transition their defensive strategy after Mbappe's goal from a compressed high press to a mid block, which gave France's wingers less space to receive the ball 1 v 1 on the counter. Also agree with a previous comment that Kounde and Williams were battling it out, making it harder for Kounde to consistently join the attack

  • @snedecor84
    @snedecor84 2 месяца назад +4

    A big part of the Spanish success is due to how good the centre backs are with the ball, especially Laporte. This allows Rodri to play in a more advanced position than most of other teams' centre midfielders, who use to sit between their CBs to start the game, and then everything goes in cascade, with Olmo and Fabian being able to roam around in more offensive spots near their fullbacks and wingers. Laporte always finds a way to connect with one of their 3 midfielders rather quickly and then these guys just turn around and take advantage of those spaces and numerical advantage on the flanks. And even when the rivals pressure Spain deeper, Laporte and Nacho (and even LeNormand, to a lesse extent) have enough quality to make runs with the ball to break that first line of pressing, getting the ball to their attackers in good positions. Now, England also has Stones who could do the same, but for some reason Walker almost always stays back near their CBs instead of going forward as Spain's fullbacks do all the time, so this numerical advantage in the midfield is lost. Honestly, the only way a team could do actual harm to Spain (as Germany showed) is simply overcharging their attack to put Spain in their own box, where they are rather weak in duels. If I were a coach, I'd play with 2 strikers and basically tell my team to keep pushing and sending balls forward. If you choose to sit on the back and let them play, waiting for a counter, you may find one lucky break, but you'll be outplayed for sure because these players konw how to find spaces even on the tightest defense.

    I realise that formations are always an approximation and shouldn't be taken too seriously but all tournament you and several other analysts have been describing Spain as playing in a 433 when, to me, they have been much closer to a 4231. Pedri and particularly Olmo have been positioned much higher than Ruiz, pressing alongside the CF and generally looking to play in the 10 space whilst Ruiz was positioned deeper initially with the freedom to push up when appropriate. Not the biggest thing but its pretty clearly been the case for the vast majority of the tournament.

    • @khalidbashir4017
      @khalidbashir4017 2 месяца назад

      😅 it is still a 433 because among the three middle-fielders, one has to move above the rest of the two to be the 10(either Pedri or Olmo). Fabian Ruiz is the 8 while Rodri is tge cdm. Ruiz was sometimes positioned deeper because his role is to go up and down to link with Olmo and Rodri

    • @petertaylor1260
      @petertaylor1260 2 месяца назад +1

      @@khalidbashir4017
      Typically when people talk about a 433 they are describing a system with a single 6 and two 8s to the left and right, as FM illustrates in his graphics, with the 8s positioned in the left and right half spaces. A 4231 typically has 2 deeper midfielders and one higher which is exactly what you admit Spain are playing. At the end of the day the distinction is a relatively small one when considering the fluidity of modern football systems but both defensively and offensively there was much more of a slant towards 2 deep midfielders, one high rather than the 2 high one deep we typically associate with a 433.

    Great analysis; however, I only partially agree with how you have France lined up at the start. For me, it was a base 433 with Rabiot, Kante, and Tchouaméni in the middle, Tchouaméni being the 6. Rabiot was not playing as an 11. But spot on by the end. It was essentially a 343 in the attack, with Tchouaméni dropping between the CBs.
    Deschamp's intent was to be more attacking, which ultimately worked for the first goal, but France was different from their usual shutdown through the middle of the field. WAYYYYYY TOO OPEN. Camavanga would have been a better option than Rabiot for me, but again, we see from the start that Deschamps wanted to attack from the gun. Camavinga is not letting Yamal take that long-distance shot. Rabiot didn't close him down.
    The second half was nutty, and France lost its composure. Kante ended up above the 9 and was pressing the GK. He didn't even make it back on a couple of counterattacks. I'm unsure if that was direction or Kante doing his own thing, but Kante always strikes me as a team player, and I don't see him going rogue. This leads me to believe that Deschamps was out of options and making a kitchen sink approach.
    At the end of the day, Spain took the lead and locked it down. France then missed their chances to put the ball on target (Mbappe and Hernandez both shot over the goal). Credit to Spain for strangling the game after they had the lead.

      @@dreamchaser4866 I never said he's a bad defender. If that's the weakness, Spain have to find her a way around it as a team.

    For every goal france or germany struggle to get spain gets many more. Spain plays like barcelona. I see them as barcelona but even better because the players are fitting that style more then for example raphinha. I also noticed poland played a lil bit like barcelona or spain but only for a half as they are not strong enough to keep this flow

    Would you agree that these overlaps and concentrating so many players in the same area is sth similar to relationism football we know from eg Fluminese?

    I felt France made major mistakes subbing Dembélé and Kanté. Also Hernandez was very unlucky, losing so many balls in possession.

    España tiene en este momento el mejor equipo del mundo. Otras selecciones tienen figuras como a Messi. Pero no tienen un equipo tan cohesionado como España
