A lot of the comments about how United were simply using Branthwaite to illustrate to the market that they wouldn't overpay, any more and were never really interested, make a lot more sense, now.

I know this video is about Branthwaite, but I was positively surprised how Maguire's numbers are absolutely elite in comparison to even De Ligt or Gabriel.
Maguire just has mistakes in his game that are unacceptable at the highest level, its a game of fine margins and every so often he just goes missing
Maguire will look better in a defensive minded team. He would work well playing for a team that plays back 3. I think he suits Inter Milan.

In fact, the more tackles a defender does it means it makes more positional and ball mistakes, or in different leagues the more tackles there are in a match it means the level of play is poorer because players can't control the game and each possession of the ball turns into a disorganized turn over or pressing situation. And that's statistically, the big 4 leagues of europe have fewer tackles and turnover situations per game than idk, french, netherlands or brazilian and argentinian league.

Calafiori is considerably better. However, only certain kind of Italian players do well in the PL.
Love the way people only heard about Calafiori now lol. Guys streets ahead of Brantwaite. Multiple prospects in Europe are better he’s not an elite prospect. Buorgiorno, Calafiori, Lucemi, Yoro, Todibo, Damso, Diomande, Silva, Ignacio, Tapsoba, Simakin, all these are just top of my head prospects that are better then him there is much much more.

Cool analysis. The section on his dribbling reminded me of Ibra and how elegant and skilful he was with the ball despite being 6’5 himself.
I would love to see a video on dribbling / ball carrying styles based on different body types and player profiles such as the classic low centre of gravity high acceleration and agility of players like Messi and Hazard who didn’t use many skill moves, Runners like Bale and Henry who had incredible stride length and top speed been able to knock the ball past a player and just leave them for dead but are not as dangerous in tight spaces and from a standing start like a Messi.
There’s a few unicorns who break the rules of what we know such as Ibra but also R9 who was incredibly skilful almost like a winger but had the frame of a traditional english centre forward who would normally have to rely on brute force.

They both should; and should both be starting IMO. They should have brought Max Kilman from Wolves as well, as Braithwaite is actually not left-footed; he's right-footed but is extremely comfortable on his 'weak' foot. Names over functionality, as usual from England. Mitchell is quality.

You have to remember he's only 21 and you're comparing him to much older, much more experienced defenders. I know he's not worth anywhere near £70m but the potential is there to become a top centre back.

Everything you said is true but he's a monster when it comes to recovery runs and he just eats the ground up. So for Ten Hags basketball style he's actually quite useful
Maybe I’m speaking from a biased position being an Everton fan and a season ticket holder but I disagree with your on the ball analysis of Branthwaite. I’ve watched Branthwaite in person all season and I must say he’s the calmest and most composed player in our squad in possession (particularly impressive given this is his first full season in the prem).
The stats may not do him justice but I feel this is a consequence of playing in a side that has preferred caution when playing out from the back.
I remember watching when we had John Stones play for us, me and most Everton fans agree that Branthwaite is a far better player than what Stones was for us at a similar age.
We’ve been a club in crisis for the entirety of the previous season, with relegation battles and points deductions looming over our heads there’s been massive pressure on Everton. Branthwaites calmness has massively helped us get through all of that. I’m more than happy for him to be criticised because Evertonians are that desperate to keep him
You have to realise that the standard of what is expected for Everton is going to be different to a side expecting to compete for titles and win the champions league. I think Branthwaite is a better defender than Stones was but it was easy to see that Stones' ceiling is higher and more suited to a possession based team.

I agree with you that towards the start we were mainly focused on his defensive attributes and on the ball held more to be desired but towards our last few games we’ve seen him develop into a more complete defender.

Thanks for the vid! Be interesting if you did an analysis of Quansah, as both he and Branthwaite were both in the England squad, and are very different players in the same centre back position. The Branthwaite video was important to put out this summer though as he might be sold soon, while Quansah is obviously not for sale,, so I am not expecting a video of the Liverpool youngster anytime soon.

What do you think about Maximilian Beier? You recently spoken about him briefly, but recently I watched some of his games with Hoffenheim as he got linked to Chelsea. Would like to know your thoughts because for me, he's exciting but raw as vegetable, playing in a side that won't showcase all of his strenghts, need to gain more weight as he can get outmuscled by not that strong defenders like Upamecano and despite being willing to compete in the air, he's not dominant and not much of a goal threat with his head at this point. Despite that, he showcased that he has good IQ, good link up, decision making and is quite technical finisher. I know it's not a big name yet, but I would like to know your thoughts about him. You didn't mention how 2 footed he is which will help with balk playing as he improves. Personally I think he can become a CL group stage CCB in a back 3

i think he's a very dedicated player and wants to do more... alot more than he's capable of. if he wants to become world class in today's football he'll need to undergo serious technical training even tho he won't match up with someone technically gifted... he would be able to be partnered up with one

Certain weaknesses can be circumnavigated if the player is being signed to fill a specific role, so maybe in isolation they look limited but could form a great partnership next to someone with those skills they lack

I usually try to include the best player for a trait or position within the comparison as well as players who are closer in ability.

It’s Branthwaite, not Braithwaite - not a good start. I watched every minute of Stones/Branthwaite at Everton and at the same age the later is levels better defensively. He only has 1 season in the prem and his passing/composure on the ball is getting better by the game. With normal progression he will be England captain very soon and an elite CB.

All you said could be right but never pay 70m for a defender with one season in the EPL and he is playing under Dyche so his ball playing ability isn’t really greatly improved. Also remember Stones is more of a cover ball playing CB that was coached by R.Martinez a front foot manager .

I think the only way signing him for United is if he's cheap enough to be a backup LCB and if he also can be backup LB. I have no idea if he actually can play as a LB. But if he could, signing him could take care of two positions that kinda need some attention. But he's gonna cost more than what we should be consider paying for a backup player.

if you want this kind of LCB/LB hybrid signing, Calafiori or Inacio is a much better profile of players to sign, who CBs can actually play LB at an elite level like Gvardiol is doing at City, even Lisandro Martinez could be better by playing inverted LB than CB due to his size, Arteta used to want Lisandro to play this role at Arsenal

No, we looked at that footage and whilst he did play a more progressive game there, it wasn't world beating stuff and he had more time to work with in a slower league.
I'm actually stunned United want to buy him although he's still young and could improve. Now I really hope Everton keep wanting too much for him and United refusing to pay that much. Surely better alternatives from Europe should be available for a more reasonable price and first of all I hope United win their Todibo case over UEFA. Unfortunately Yoro seems very unlikely if Real Madrid still wants him before this season.

The overall analysis is accurate knowing his weaknesses and strengths don't really suit what man united need right now and his price tag is also too high for his current ability.
However the max potential you gave him was a bit too low because he can definitely become UCL class if he improves his game and gets signed by a team like atletico who play a style that suits branthwaite more and he doesn't need to rely too much on his technical ability. You never know how much some players can improve and how good they can become.
You're underrating the calibre of Atletico CB's especially back in the day. Godin was tiers above.
