- This week, Marques jumps right into it with Andrew and David about the OpenAI vs Scarlett Johansson drama regarding one of the voices from ChatGPT 4o. Then they dig into the new Surface products from the Microsoft event and David explains why the move to ARM is such a big deal. To close it out they talk about a feature that Rivian is adding to its cars and a different feature Tesla is removing from its cars. Enjoy!

Every major LLM has already been trained on Reddit posts. It was the primary reason Reddit closed their API, they wanted to prevent the AI companies from scraping their data. The difference is now they have an official agreement with OpenAI.
yeah :D same with stackoverflow and many news paper sites
Makes sense. Seen Google search referencing a troll post from Reddit using its AI overview feature recently.
It’s not that just the voice sounds like Scarlet, it’s the personality. It behaves just like Samantha from the movie. The laughs, sarcasm, and voice inflections are just like the movie.
Agree. I actually think the voice actor did a great job, it’s a shame Sam didn’t think this through properly, it was by far the most appealing voice for the product.

David is mistaken, before the Surface Pro X there were 3 Windows on Arm PCs that ran on a Snapdragon 835. There was the Asus NovaGo, Hp Envy 2x, and the Lenovo Miix 630. Aside from Surface RT dreams... the Pro X was not the first time they tried and OEMs tried also (Nokia made an RT tablet) it always just sucked.
Was looking for this comment, I personally had a lumia 2520 thay I used for uni with word and a webbroswer and there was some community made methods of emulating x86 apps but it was only for light weight apps and it worked quiet well for that bit that was it

That's because with earlier attempts at ARM PCs there were no options. Everything was phone processors. In fact the surface pro x had a modified Qualcomm 855 processor with added PC necessities like extra PCIe lanes. It wasn't until Qualcomm acquired Nuvia and the key leaders and chip designers behind the M processors that they had a serious chip for PCs.

I wouldn’t have a problem with recall if it were opt-in. Having it be opt-out is a massive security risk.
Imagine forgetting to opt-out of a certain website or app with sensitive data, and now you have loads of images of that data stored on your computer. Even if it is encrypted the private key will still have to be kept locally, which means malware will be able to access it. It’s just another attack vector for hackers.
Also public computers will likely have this enabled by default, which means that everything you do will be recorded, and anyone that knows about the feature can access a log of everything you did.

2 million tokens is not a small novel. You can feed the entire Harry Potter series with room to spare.
Researchers are working on using synthetic data to train LLMs, but that synthetic data is not just another LLM's output. Oh my God, the conversation about Hawaii and Alaska had me rolling and dying. It was so funny. 🤣🤣🤣
It was originally called pro because it came with the pro version of windows instead of the home version. This was important because the pro version had domain support which was needed to connect to business networks.
What's up, people of the internet

39:54 The surface pro X was not the first attempt by Microsoft to run Windows on arm, it's not even the first surface to do it. They actually tried it in 2012 (!) with Windows RT (a version of Windows 8.1).
I know this because my brother and father each bought one not knowing how limited the OS was and absolutely hated it.
My brother now has a Intel surface pro and absolutely loves it. I'm not touching this attempt at Arm until maybe a year or so down the line when others have really tested it.
Also there was sq2 but I don't even know if there were significant changes or just clock speed so it's less important
The rounded corners are great but not a new feature to the Surface laptop lineup. The surface Laptop Studio screen has always had the rounded corners top and bottom.
Lately your guys' episodes have been feeling really good!
I REALLY want devices without AI... I REALLY HATE AI.
I’m with you. If people don’t use it then companies will stop investing. I’m also really tired of ML being called AI.
Ya i been avoiding yt videos with thumbnails of Ai..
Your sentiment is acknowledged. While not everyone may embrace AI, its capabilities continue to evolve, offering solutions to various challenges and enriching human experiences through innovation and collaboration.
What do you hate about AI? I’d love to know. Because “AI” is just machine learning. The same thing that has been in devices for over a decade now
I’m proud to call myself a neo-Luddite. That being said I don’t think these agents are intelligent, at all. I’m okay with chat bot/assistants for productivity applications, but think generative “AI” needs to be outlawed, full stop. Human creativity is vital for us culturally, socially, spiritually and, well, existentially. Technology is supposed to be used to reduce drudgery in our lives, or AUGMENT our creativity, not become these leviathan plagiarists with the implicit goal of putting creative professionals (of all sorts, I put even, say, taxation accountants and actuaries beneath this rubric) out of work.
I've seen articles revealing that the internal comms of openAI reveal the voice actress for "Sky" was hired prior to any contact with Johansson. Would this change y'alls view on the openAI / Scarlett Johansson debacle at all?
What? Why did they approach Johansson if they already hired someone?
@@corvacopia My assumption is that they wanted a well known person like Johansson to be the face of the voice to "bridge the gap between tech companies and creatives and consumers to feel comfortable with the seismic shift concerning humans and AI" (that's a quote from her response about why Sam wanted her and her background). So he liked her voice for it and her being well known to consumers seemed to be a plus (rather than an anonymous woman as it is now)
I said it in another comment, but the voice actor apparently spoke out to say that this is her normal voice. Sure, they may have selected her specifically on purpose, but as long as they don't imply it's Johansson, there's nothing she can do. Sounding similar to a celebrity isn't a crime. Obviously she has the right to be annoyed, but nothing more than that 😅
Btw it would be really funny if Google hires Scarlet Johansson as a big middle finger to OpenAI 😂
@@Dave-cg9li yea I feel like everyone jumped on the "openAI ripped of Scarlett Johansson's voice" train too quickly
Lol, I doubt she'd be interested, but I could see "her" being the new voice for Gemini
Doesn't matter. It is perfectly legal to imitate a person's voice and it can not be copywrited.
I’m all here for the Ellis’ Dune obsession. It’s so funny 🤣
Windows 8 RT was on ARM right? So even older.
OpenAI provided all the voice training info on Sky to WaPo - it's not ScarJo's voice FYI - OpenAI has flubbed the optics on this whole thing like crazy, but end of day, they're safe, legally (a 1 word tweet is not enough evidence for anything concrete beyond referencing a movie which also has a talking assistant). Also, the Sky voice was released last year, prior to Sam reaching out to scarjo. Horribly dumb optics (did they not pay attention to the hollywood strike last year?) but I really don't see how OpenAI ends up getting in legal trouble here. that said, its been absolute 🍿 watching how far people have twisted this story on social media.
Yo waveform. Just wondering why this comes out way later on youtube than it does on spotify
Windows on ARM, started with Windows 8 with the Surface RT they had some ARM involvement earlier than that even, but this should be the earliest customer facing device that most would have used.

There is a surprising amount of people that actually hate Windows 11. Microsoft is inserting ads into the settings page now and have been installing bloatware for years, and the fact that you have to pay $100+ for a liscense is just feels like an insult to injury for some.
Yeah it's insulting that people actually have to pay for a product
Way to drag out that first trivia segue wow

Hot take: the voice of Sky is based on a fictional character in the movie “Her” which happens to be played by Scarlett Johansson.
Johansson should not be able to prevent someone else from creating a parody based off of that fictional character based on the fact that it is flirty and takes form as a similar technology to the one in the film.
While the inflections are similar in many cases, the voice is clearly voiced by a different actor. Any expert could tell you the same.
its insane these guys dont mention the precedent this sets.. it barely sounds like scar jo.. half the guys havent even heard the voice? im done watching these clowns
@@dougpression They were off this episode, but they clearly haven't thought about this deeply from a legal rights issue. I tune in each week and I enjoy their personalities and insight into tech.
I have no doubt, btw, that OpenAI would win the issue in court, but the bad press would negate any winnings. Just goes to show that our creative rights only go so far as the court of public opinion will allow.
Parody or satire might be fair use. But this is not parody. It is commercial use. That the AI is voiced by a different actor is not a good defense. The AI is modeled on Johansson's performance for commercial purposes. This cannot be done without her permission or without compensating her. The producers of the film might also have a case.
@@brachiator1Parody law extends to commercial use, at least in entertainment. Weird Al made a career of it. You may be right that it wouldn't extend outside of entertainment. That said, I don't think parody is what OpenAI is angling for anyway.
If I were OpenAI's attorney and OpenAI were being sued by Johansen I would argue that Johansen's performance in Her doesn't really do anything unique that can be copywritten outside of the actual visual and audio recording made on set. She certainly doesn't doesn't own the rights to be flirtatious and girly. The implications of Johansen winning such a case would severely limit the capability of AI/Human interfaces to imitate personality at all.
Even in the case where OpenAi hired a different voice actor (which they allegedly did) and asked her to reference Johansen's performance in Her I believe they should be completely within their rights to do so. I'd be surprised to learn of any US laws that would actually prevent OpenAI from acting in this way.
I bet the writer/director of Her would have a better legal claim, although it's interesting to note that they probably ripped the concept from Siri.
@@groovejunky2549 A performance in a movie is pretty much by definition unique. It is a set of decisions and choices by the actor and the director. I don't know if the contracts between the actors and producers that cover a similar area are available to the public, but they might be referred to in any legal dispute based on similar claims. It will be interesting to see what might happen in the future and what the outcome might be.

The sky voice has been around for a while. It's not new. I don't think it sounds anything like Scarlett Johansson at all. It does sound a little bit like the way the character in the Her movie talked, but that wasn't particularly unique to that movie.
Yeah it doesn't take much time to know that Sky voice has been available for more than 8 months now, Scarlett Johansson's open letter is purposely misleading so that her lawyers can put more pressure on OpenAI to settle it financially out of court by influencing the public opinion.

It's cause he knew you were here.

Maybe I just missed it, but an explanation of the whole "windows on arm" thing would've been useful. I had to google it and I'm still not sure why this is different from their other stuff
ARM and X86 devices have fundamentally different chips, they are physically different. In order to run MS Windows on ARM, it basically had to be re-written to work, and every program you run on Windows ARM will have to either be modified or go through a "conversion" of types to run.
Think of it like diesel vs gas/petrol cars. From the outside they're both internal combustion engines, but they're fundamentally different in how they work.
While Apple has already moved their range of macbooks etc over to ARM with the M series SoC's, and has conversion at a hardware level, MS Windows has less control over the hardware it is installed onto. MS Windows must also support X86 Intel products etc. It's another huge layer of complexity and goes against the KISS principle in engineering design.
Listening to them describe the Microsoft/Qualcomm tech is just painful! This is supposed to be a tech channel, but I am starting to wonder if you guys know anything beyond phones and Apple products. Like wow, it is super-obvious that you guys don't understand much beyond Apple tech. Microsoft's "Neural Engine?" Because he screwed up describing NPU's? BTW, it Trillian's of Operations (TOPs) and not "FLOPS" which is a different computer calculation. I get that you focused on consumer tech, but geesh, I would hate for consumers to hear this, because they'd be as confused as the "Experts" at MKBHD. Come on guys, be better than this!
Can I make a suggestion? You all have someone on the podcast who's a specialist on sound, cameras, phones, computers and the internet. But when you all start talking about AI, you get a lot of things wrong. Since AI isn't going anywhere, can I suggest that someone do a deep dive and understanding it so you all will no longer have that deficit?
What about doing one of those deep dive episodes on how LLMS work so that everyone on the team will understand forever?
How neat would it be to have "The Brownley Turnpike" listed in every road atlas, Google Maps, Apple Maps, even Bing Maps...!! Go it team Waveform....get it listed after Marques! 🙂

It’s the same as always lol, why even say this
I feel like the only things I'd use the recall feature to 'recall' it would have already forgotten anyway due the storage space limit. If it's only several months old and I can picture it well enough to write a description of it, I think I can also just remember what it is or I can use Google to find it.
The only recall we need is like PlayStation and Xbox how you click a button and it literally saves the last 30+ minutes of screen recording. I need that for every device.
