      Eren Jaeger They are pretty awesome creatures, certainly. Perhaps next time then? I mean there are lots and lots of Greek creatures to write about.

      Aaron Wells I know. But the centaurs deserved to be on the list. They're one of the most popular creatures in Greek myth and more popular than the no. 1.

      Eren Jaeger You're right... when I wrote the script I didn't include the word popular in the title. Blame the big dog up stairs for that one. :p

    Fascinated with Greek mythology.
    Growing up,I had an uncle who was Greek,married to my mothers oldest sister,he was quite the character, there was a scene of him in an early home movie we would watch almost yearly, he would sit in this apolstered chair and lift his arms and legs,doing a circular motion with them, and everyone would laugh at this silly behavior, that is, us watching it on film,it had no sound,this was from the 50's. Anyways ,he was the most prevalent of my uncles,spending many a holiday at their house-or occassioally having their family over.
    But I think having the knowledge that his ethnicity was Greek, drew my attention to that culture,and subsequently,to ancient cultures as a whole.
    So thanks for this informative post. 😉👍🗿♨

      +Mary Todd no i have not but I did watch the original movie which was unimpressive. At my high school during senior year you would get a lot of choices on what English class you would like to take. The classes were all half a school year long and you would pick two. One of the English classes I took was on Greek mythology. It sparked my interest in the stories told during that time and I would research the mythology from time to time. That was in 2006. My knowledge of Greek mythology from that time has diminished a lot but I remember the hecatoncales due to its strange characteristics.

    There are over 1,000 versions of greeks myths and were the heck is Kam'pe, a fire breathing reptile with a scorpian tail, dragon wings, and a belt that actually changed from animal to animal trying to kill you that was the dungeon keeper of elder cyclops and Hundred handed Ones? Oh and according to the version I heard, Harpes are part dragon and part human, not part bird part THING, sorry.

    Medusa, a real woman, was the Afrikan serpent-goddess said to have worn a pouch around her waist containing live snakes that represented wisdom and renewal. She was said to have carried the original Gorgon mask to frighten off the unskilled, and it was painted red to symbolize the power of menstrual blood with “gruesome glaring eyes, bared fanged teeth and, like the Hindu Goddess Kali, a protruding tongue” Goddess Inspired. Her name derived from Egyptian Maat (Truth) “which also gives us the words medicine, mathematics, and Sanskrit medha (female wisdom)”. “The Gorgons were a trinity whose names were Medusa, Stheino, and Eurayle- or Wisdom, Strength, and Universality”. Blacked Out through White Wash
    Afrikan cultures were unfamiliar to the people known as Europeans, and many of the Greek mythological creatures originate from Afrikan civilizations. The snake hair assessment, assuming these people(Greeks) did not know the name of the hairstyle, referred to it as snake hair later creating classic myths depicting a goddess that actually represented truth and was not a villain, into a monster, taught in schools as Greek mythology.
    Snake hair and Dreadlocks?
    The original, real life Medusa, supposedly had dreads and the origin of dreads through ancient discoveries existed before the fictional Medusa character was recreated. She was the snake Goddess which is how Europeans formed their version of a monster with hair of snakes, with a face that would turn any man to stone because of fear, which developed from the Gorgon mask she carried with her.

    Will a blind man turn into stone if he is looking straight at Medusa's eyes?

    • @gutterspeak
      @gutterspeak 8 лет назад +15

      +Ethan Ross I would presume the answer to that is no, the reasoning being; that all one must do for a gorgon to petrify you, is, meet its gaze.
      Merrian Webster defines a gaze as "to fix the eyes in a steady intent look with eagerness tor studious attention." Bringing on the question of, can a blind person "look"?Merriam defines a look as, "to exercise the power of vision upon." Another quick word search and; the definition for vision is as follows: "the act of power of seeing: sight."
      And sight is "the sense we use to describe the quality of an object as we perceive it through a process in which light rays entering the eye are transformed by the retina into electrical signals that are trasnmitted to the brain via the optic nerve."
      Blind is defined as being sightless... so short answer now? Blind = sightless = not stony stares. :)
      That was a fun question though!

      Like Aaron Wells typed... No... but I highly doubt a blind person would make it out alive either way. Though Medusa relied soley on her Sight to Stone approach she was still pretty vicious... snake like I guess one could say.

    • @LiveWithPossible
      @LiveWithPossible 8 лет назад +1

      +Ethan Ross Will a deaf man sharts himself to death while hearing a madman screams? lol Well, that's quite contradicting. But no, a blind man will not turn to stone, he will get devoured blindless without knowing her hideous look.

      The story I know is that Medusa was one of the most devoted priestess to Athena. Athena, being one of the thre godesses that would never mary (aka have kids) Athena would expect the same for Medusa. But Medusa was extremly beautiful, and Poseidon raped her in Athena's temple. That made Athena mad, cursing her to never be beautifull again and every one that would he her face would become stone.

      he had 7 wives, 2 of which was his sister and the other one was his aunt, poseidon raped medusa and she got cursed by athena and their child was pegasus, cronus/cronos wanted power, so he was willing to punish his father Uranus by cutting of the penis, throwing the testicles to the sea, thus the birth of aphrodite happened, cronos/cronus ate his children to prevent them from defeating him etc.. i could go on but i don't have all day

      the greeks always were fascinated by strong animals such as bulls,snakes etc. because they were very dangerous and often described mythical creatures with the animals traits (for instance the minoans with Minotaur-that means that the minoans considered the bull as an animal that should be feared but actually they envied their strength and a fun fact is that the bull was a sacred animal to the minoans and often its horns were used as decoration in temples or rituals!)

    one monster that I remember from mythology was the Hydra, which was a serpent that if you cut off its head two more will grow back I know of three ways of how to kill it:1. Crush it with rocks and/or boulders (Hecules).2. Once the head is cut off, immeditly burn the stub so it can not produce a new head.3. Use Maduse's head to turn it to stone (Percy Jackson).
