  • This extremely common term is probably the most misunderstood amongst singers.

    I was wondering about this lately because my old vocal instructors used to say "support with the diaghragm" but never really explained what that meant or how to do it. Only recently, in poking around in your book, have I come upon a better understanding of what it means. But this video nails it. You're a great communicator.

    God...you are so right Mark! I have never understood what many teachers use as a mantra - "support with your diaphragm"! Support! support! I constantly heard those words throughout my singing career and truthfully never understood this. I just went on instinct. Your clear explanation and visuals have cleared up more confusion than a million, stuffy, "not a clue", teachers could ever give.

      @@voicelessondotcom I've noticed! I'm carefully making my way through this wealth of skillful knowledge 💓 (that is to say: whose other video could I be watching right now? After having done exercises and sung, of course) Edit: speaking of which, may I ask you something about the battery function in the Time Machine song? I have found myself feeling slightly annoyed at it, as if it was overbearing on the voice and the piano, i.e. I had to deliberately try to cut it out from my focus. Bit I did not succeed, so I have exited for now. Edit: I didn't mean to be unkind nor to criticize! The fact you decided to add the 'piatti' to the piano (those percussions which are used with the drums) makes me think they have a function in that lesson, which I am not grasping.

    a very a very good analogy there, now we can understand why but can you gives us some tips on how, how can we control breath like this

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  3 года назад +1

      By asking for a specific sound rather than instructing your body how to behave. For instance, ask for a clear low volume note. To do so requires your diaphragm to withhold your breath to create a low flow. Then ask for a loud sound - the opposite will happen. No need to control parts of your body to sing - that connection is instinctive. What your body requires, though, is clear intentions. Focus on your physical comfort while asking for specific sounds.

    • @Endrit719
      @Endrit719 3 года назад +2

      @@voicelessondotcom do you mean like think of the voice in our head and try to create that and understand how that should feel and the body will do the rest?

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  3 года назад +2

      @@Endrit719 Yes - but you're making it too complicated. When you tapped out the words to your question did you instruct the muscles in your fingers individually? Did you tell the muscles in your eyes to focus on the screen? Of course not! Those are reflexive gestures we never think twice about. Singing is best when treated the same way. Singing is instinctive - perfection is not. So sing with an intentional sound in mind and your body will be better informed.

    I like to challenge anyone to do lips trills non stop for 50 minutes! That is how Brett Manning teaches people to sing through chest, head and mix! If you have the Singing Success CD's ya know what I am talking about. When you do the lip trill..Start in a low doppy.. voice in your tongue trill... then go into you middle voice range (Keep doing lip trill)..then do lip trill into high voice, (Head voice)..then come back down to chest, in a low voice (Tongue trill, or lip trill the whole time)..Repeat for 50 minutes..A piano is helpful for this, or even an insturmental,,Now If I can do it, than it can be done! Thanks (Bows),,,The challenge is not to stop, and while doing the tongue, or lip trill, do not stop or stutter! Set yer timers! Go! lol

I had surgeries a couple of years ago that left a lot of my core muscles shifted to either side of my abdomen. Im hoping i can make up for it with better diaphragmatic control.Any thoughts? I will be contacting you soon for a consultation. Thanks again for all you do for singers the world over.

      Focus on the sound you want (not the behavior) and your brain will learn how to use your breath muscles in their current state (rather than what they were).

    LOL. that is a very interesting way to play the piano, could you play like that and hang upside down?. lol. And please don't eat the flute. hahahah! On a serious note. I get what you are saying but when I lay down and sing, like I said. I can sing very high notes. I sit up and there comes pulling up chest voice and straining, How can I sing like I am laying down? If I recorded myself laying down vs sitting up, You would hear a difference in my voice. I know it's about air flow, but how do I get the same air flow as laying down? I really do not not want to be a bed singer. lol..Thanks for this video!

    I have a question...might be silly tho, but I was never clear with the fact on how do I inhale properly when singing? If I inhale through nose, I feel diaphragm better and seems to me I don't get my voice too "burned"...but If I inhale through my stomach, feels like I do have more air, but also like the pressure is more on the throat then and that "burns" my voice faster. Is this even making any sense? :D

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  9 лет назад

      The only way to inhale through your stomach would be to have a hole in your belly! You should inhale through your nose whenever possible - but that "stomach" sensation is your diaphragm pushing down on your stomach (as it should). So the best thing is to do both - but don't breath in so much that you can't manage it well (the burn on your throat) Watch this: ruclips.net/video/0u4CGQJhWIs/видео.html

      hahha yes, You are right, I didn't express myself well, what I ment is, when I inhale through my mouth, then the sensation is more in my stomach...sorry about that :D and thank You soo soo much.
