What do you think about the TRUE mythology of Anubis compared to his portrayals on the big screen? And which Egyptian deity should I cover next?! 👀 Thanks for watching, mere mortals!
Yes, I've always hated how Hollywood and fiction has portrayed Anubis, Hades, etc. You're right. He really just minded his own business and did his job.
It's partially because the Egyptians, Norse, and Greeks didn't fear death like we do today. Much of the fear of death in society came from the Romanization of Christianity (AKA Catholicism) in the early Middle Ages. Which is wild, because the early Christians didn't fear death (that whole Jesus was resurrected thing), but once it became the state religion (thanks, Constantine), many of the Emperor's personal beliefs wormed their way into Christianity. And as the Dark Ages went on, various kings and Popes did the same.
Tears of the Kingdom seems to recycle the Shinto-Buddhist tale of The Spider's Thread, while substituting its Izanami and Izanagi -like figures as kind of an Anubis parallel, which is later in the games' story even more connected to a version of death in rebirth. But most people would probably reject this reading, because when given the chance, you would STILL assume the one-sided "death is the bad guy" narrative as more obviously valid, than any culturally challenging alternatives. "I doubt it's that deep, I prefer to hold MY biases as simple and everything else as too deep".
The gods of death are usually the most chill of the roster, and I really dislike the evil incarnate trope for them. And again yet another banger of a mythology video!
Fun fact- while Anubis is most often associated with jackals some of the canines that have been referred to as jackals in the past have been discovered to actually have been species of wolves. This also includes some now extinct breeds of dogs so we really are not sure what type of canine Anubis truly is.
Me at Egyptologists on learning that: I recognize that the council has made a decision. But given that it’s a stupid-ass decision, I’ve elected to ignore it.
I like to imagine Anubis as something close to Neil Gaiman's Death in the Sandman series. Kind, empathetic, and supportive of the newly dead. A strong and gentle and noble guide into the afterlife.
There's an episode of Gargoyles where a man manages to summon Anubis, putting a halt to the cycle of death. Anubis has to explain that the world cannot sustain an endlessly growing population, and yet the release of death can't come to ease the inevitable suffering. They show he's not evil by putting the concept of death into perspective, a bold move for a kids' show.
@@queensofbridges4619 If you're still looking, it's Season 2 Episode 30 "Grief". I might have made it sound more intense than it really is, but I think it's still worth checking out. Gargoyles as a whole is a gem.
Interestingly, the version of Anubis in Gargoyles isn’t portrayed as a villain; though, Set actually fits the “violent power-hungry villain” role a lot more than Anubis.
So Anubis, being the god of minding his own business, was an unsung hero who did one of the most important and ubiquitous jobs. I think many of us can relate to that.
Your opening to this video made me so happy. I'm a big fan of gods of death and follow a few of them. So seeing someone "publicly" defend these deities fills me with both joy and hope. You rock solo👏
I imagine the plus side of sacrificing so many dogs in Anubis's honor is that the Field of Reeds must be filled with puppies, just living their best afterlives, getting all the treats, pets, and belly rubs a doggo could want from the grateful folks they helped get into the spirit world. For eternity!
I think the damage control bit has to do with Christian doctrine seeping into things. God of death/Underworld ruler sounds similar (not really if you research) to the devil so let's make him like we commonly portray the devil.
The most epic and metal god of them all. And that's coming from a Christian. Jokes aside, loving the Egyptian vids, Jon. Especially fond of the reference to the pre-Osirian religion (my personal favorite Egyptian era).

in the Gargoyles season 2 episode Grief, Anubis is portrayed as a wise, just god who is maintaining a steady balance of life and death; except when the Pack member, Jackal, is his avatar. (this may not make sense to non-fans of the show, or just those who have not seen the episode)
Yeah, Set was the god of Chaos and Sandstorms, not the dead. That would Belong to Osiris. Anubis is the God of mummification. Seriously, how do people mix up Set with the God and Death?
Anubis really is the original guide to the Egyptian afterlife who receives the deceased. But because the MCU miniseries Moon Knight replaced Anubis with a hippopotamus-headed Taweret, there are now people who have started to think that the Taweret was the guide instead of Anubis. And I blame Disney and the MCU for this damage they did because before Moon Knight this problem didn't exist.

Wepwawet/Up-waut was Anpu's older brother, he's certainly an older PreDynastic Deity than Anpu, and was originally a fearsome war god, leading the way for the King's armies in battle, he also became the protector and avenger of Ausir/Osiris as well as opening the way to the Duat. He was also portrayed at the helm of Ra's sun barque guiding it through the chambers of the night.

3:29 there's yet another version I heard where Anubis is the legitimate son of Set and Nephthys, and I kinda prefer this one because it feels like Anubis is trying to atone for his father's misdeeds.
If his origins go so far back would it not be reasonable to assume that stories of his being a death god with a jackal head have some origin in jackals just lurking around graves and corpses?
I think it would be cool if a jackal became Anubis because he committed some type of grave sin to the jackal gods, heaven, and community. So therefore he has to never eat corpses again and can only give them to that crocodile
also, the version in American Gods seems to be the closest in line with the actual role. Leave it to Neil G to respect the craft of myths and story telling
While Hades and Anubis have definitely been done the dirty by modern storytellers, I think that referencing Hel as being unfairly maligned is a stretch. If anything she's been overpowered in the Marvel stories. The 3 children of Loki and Angrboda are the catalysts for Ragnarok, the armageddon of the Aesir & Vanir. Odin/Woden threw her into Hel (the 9 world's) as a punishment for and protection from her future actions. Which is why she was sent those who experienced a "peaceful death". Any god who keeps cooking utensils called Hunger and Famine, and who makes souls sleep on a bed called "Sick Bed" isn't my idea of a good deity. 😉

One of Anpu's epithets is 'Accounter of hearts' how else would you account hearts if not by eating them... 🤨 Personally I believe that Anpu was quite a ferocious Deity before the Osirian mythos. He and his brother Wepwawet/Up-waut originate from wild canids after all (Egyptian Wolf/Golden Jackal/Wild Dogs) although Wepwawet never lost the ferocious edge like Anpu did.
Jackals in real life defend their dens and offspring with their lives If need be. So maybe the jackal god would defend worthy souls with the same furiosity and devotion.
If Anubis was created while they needed help finding the pieces of a corpse to put together, wouldn’t it make sense that he is depicted as a jackal because as scavengers, a jackal would be the perfect creature to find the pieces that were scattered?
13:04 Saqqara has numerous cat remains because of Bastet and I read somewhere else that some crocodiles were also “farmed“ and sacrificed. Anubis and Hades are pretty chilled gods that just mind their own business.
I take issue with the fact that Anubis has been portrayed in movies as the bad guy, which as you rightly say is not the case , he just minded his own business and is a very protective deity to work with
With GOW going 2 Egypt, and Kratos having a habit of graverobbing. I would love 2 see Anubis get fed up with it and come for Kratos after doing it so many times
I'm surprised you missed a punny, and said he didn't have the taste for it anymore, instead of he didn't have the heart for it anymore 😔 😅. As always though, loved it. You make it fun to learn weird stuff! Thanks bunches!! Ma'at, and Hathor are ones I'd love to hear more about please 🙏
When you 1st started talking about the bad rep these God's got in movies & listing the 1s that did Anubis wrong I immediately thought of how well he was portrayed in American Gods. I'm glad you brought it up
This myth reminds me of this Chinese legend that I read back in school. The Emperor was looking for men to finishing building The Great Wall. Alot of the woman with husbands begged their husbands to refuse to go because they had heard stories that none of the previous men who had worked on the Wall ever returned. But the men were forced to go. Years passed and this one woman (Forgot what her name was) went to the Great Wall to look for her husband and to her shock she found nothing but white bones littering the ground. She began to weep then began to pray for a way to find her husband's bones so she can give them a proper burial. Without even thinking, she bit down hard on her thumb and flicked some of her blood onto some bones nearby. The blood slid off most of the bones except for one. She realized that her prayer had been answered, then she began the long and painful journey of biting her thumb and flicking the blood onto the bones, if the blood slid off, the bones weren't her husband's. If the blood stayed, the bones WAS of her husband's. She gathered them up, gave them a proper burial then went home. That's all I remember. Very sad story, felt sorry for the wife.
I assume all those evil, selfish deeds of the unworthy dead would make the heart taste less than ideal. I imagine giving the heart to Ammit being something similar to a hunter/fisherman feeding the less savory bits of the animal to their dog while they are preparing the carcass. Just because a human doesn't want it (or might get sick ingesting it) doesn't mean that it should go to waste or that the dog won't find it healthy and delicious. Theoretically same for Anubis and Ammit.
Mate you just won a new subscriber and my 1st like on your content as soon as I heard you speaking… You definitely know how to explain the history and put the story clear. I’ve noticed as well that most of the movies and so on describe Anubis as a Beast or the Bad actor of the story when it’s other way around. Definitely you should make another video about Hades, I would appreciate it. Many thanks for the great content.
hey thanks for the kind words! I made an episode about Hades years ago but it still holds up if you ask me. Just search “The Messed Up Origins of Hades” to find it!
Hey Jon, love your channel. It's one of my top 5 favorites. Also, I really love that theory you came up with. It's really perfect, and fits why they would use a jackal. Because he devoured the souls of the unworthy. Although...I thought Nephthys willingly tried to help Isis put Osiris back together. It's so rough that there is so much conflicting information out there, huh?

If I’m not mistaken, he’s done a video or two touching on this!
@@chyenneteichman4307 really? I’ve tried looking but couldn’t find anything but I’ll continue my search thank you!
@@amberfaulkner2346hey so I went and checked and it was a different channel who covered different parts of the legend of King Arthur 😂 I listen to a ton of folklore. If you’re interested, it’s the channel Mythology explained. I hope Jon delves into the legend too!! It would be fun to watch
@@chyenneteichman4307 Thank you so much I really appreciate it! and I agree It would be fun to watch and I hope he does as well I would be so excited If he did that video next or sometime in the near future! 😀
Qingu is not often talked about, and too few people realize that's a reference in King from One Punch Man.
3:29 there's yet another version I heard where Anubis is the legitimate son of Set and Nephthys, and I kinda prefer this one because it feels like Anubis is trying to atone for his father's misdeeds.
That is my belief I am an Egyptian pagan, ive been practicing for over 25 years. My main deity is Anubis. I I've never heard that version before
Patron Saint of Morticians, and also people who work the graveyard shift
I love your channel and mythology alot. Especially this one. I got to learn alot about the God I invoke to guide people through their way after death.
I’m in the first 6 minutes after posting!!!
Love you Jon!
If his origins go so far back would it not be reasonable to assume that stories of his being a death god with a jackal head have some origin in jackals just lurking around graves and corpses?
I liked American Gods portrayal of Anubis or Mr. Jackel, I’ve not seen season 2 but I hope they didn’t screw ip his character.
Thanks for actually calling him a psychopomp. That is on the point. When I go I hope to meet him.
I think it would be cool if a jackal became Anubis because he committed some type of grave sin to the jackal gods, heaven, and community. So therefore he has to never eat corpses again and can only give them to that crocodile
@6:35 could it be maybe that by eating them, they were "escorting them" or "ushering them" or acting as vessels to somewhere like the underworld
also, the version in American Gods seems to be the closest in line with the actual role.
Can you do a Messed Up Origin of Jim Henson's Labyrinth and how Jareth is linked to the Erlking plus the other fairy creatures in the movie please. Please. PLEASE!!!!🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Finally🎉
Next please poast a video about sekmet the lion head goddess
I just found your channel. I'm hoping you see this comment because you won't catch me dead on IG, SC, FB, Twitter (or X, whatever the hell it is now), Reddit, or anything else aside from RUclips that might be considered social media, and since you have a podcast, YT might soon follow the rest. Anyway, I think you're brilliant. Thank you for your great content.
Can't even be blamed. The toxicity runs rampant on these apps, makes it hard to find good folks like Jon.
@@twox5339 it's heartening to find someone else who thinks so, at least. Be well and safe travels, friend.
Every death god in mythologies:chill, gentle, honest and helpful god who is the only one of the pantheon that does his job right, minds his own bussines, cares for his family and rull cairly
Hollywood :ThEy ArE eViLLLLLLL!!!!
Consider this..... You know when you say to someone hey i like Frogs.... Then for the next 50yrs people do nothing but buy you frog figurines. Well this is probably what Anubis is going through. He probably once said you know that Jackal is cool oh i also dig dogs. Now he is the Doggy Daddy to a million dead dogs.
The most ICONIC psychopomp. Such a good boy too.
Yesterday and today I saw a shadowy figure with a dog head and i have been searching for who it is. It is definitely Anubis!
There’s…someone behind him.
Hello John I love your content you put out I love mythology and the real back stories about fairy tales and nursery rhymes and I'd also like to say I absolutely love Gunther and penny they are so cute! Keep the great content coming I really enjoy them!
One of Anpu's epithets is 'Accounter of hearts' how else would you account hearts if not by eating them... 🤨
Personally I believe that Anpu was quite a ferocious Deity before the Osirian mythos. He and his brother Wepwawet/Up-waut originate from wild canids after all (Egyptian Wolf/Golden Jackal/Wild Dogs) although Wepwawet never lost the ferocious edge like Anpu did.
‘The god of minding their own business’ I want that carved on my tombstone
Thankfully Hollywood hans't got their grubby mitts to Finnish mythology yet. The Master and Mistress of Tuonela are safe for now!
Jackals in real life defend their dens and offspring with their lives If need be. So maybe the jackal god would defend worthy souls with the same furiosity and devotion.
Fun fact, I named my first dog Anubis. An Afghan hound. I loved him and he loved me, so i guess my afterlife should be secured.
Could you please explain the messed-up origins of The Kane Chronicles by Rick Riordan?
I think you're overthinking this and Anubis simply got the job because he's good boy shaped.
So Anubis is basically Azrael in the abrahamic religions. Not the one who kills, but who guides the souls to where they belong.
I love this guy so much and I’m so glad I’m getting in on his new posts💙
I am interested in seeing a video on Bastet.
If Anubis was created while they needed help finding the pieces of a corpse to put together, wouldn’t it make sense that he is depicted as a jackal because as scavengers, a jackal would be the perfect creature to find the pieces that were scattered?
Why make Anubis be a villain, when there is Set/Seth (the aardvark headed God of Chaos)?
13:04 Saqqara has numerous cat remains because of Bastet and I read somewhere else that some crocodiles were also “farmed“ and sacrificed. Anubis and Hades are pretty chilled gods that just mind their own business.
I'm surprised you didn't wonder if the dog catacombs should be called dogacombs.
I take issue with the fact that Anubis has been portrayed in movies as the bad guy, which as you rightly say is not the case , he just minded his own business and is a very protective deity to work with
When I die, would it be disrespectful to scritch him behind the ears and say "such a good boy"?
With GOW going 2 Egypt, and Kratos having a habit of graverobbing. I would love 2 see Anubis get fed up with it and come for Kratos after doing it so many times
Suggestion: The Egyptian equivalents of Greek and Roman gods
Hi John I just want to say can you do the Grim Reapers back story and mess up origin of him or the original story of him
Ah my favorite God and like me he minds his own fucking business.
Mate you just won a new subscriber and my 1st like on your content as soon as I heard you speaking…
You definitely know how to explain the history and put the story clear.
