- ■ NORTHERN VIETNAM: It was a little after 10 o'clock and the sun was starting heat things up. To protect my much coveted albino complexion I stopped to put on some sunscreen.
Almost immediately a man started yelling Hello from his window. This happens all over Northern Vietnam as people are incredibly eager to say Hello to tourists.
As the man ventured out from his wooden stilt home to come and talk to me he seemed mighty curious about this lotion I was putting in my face. I offered him some which in turn set off a remarkable turn of events....
■ This won't make any sense unless you've seen the vid but when you have, if you're pondering why would I ask for water and then not dare to drink it? At first I thought maybe they ran a little corner store from the house adjacent to their hut. I thus conjectured they'd have new bottles there. When I finally got a glass though, and saw where it came from, I can assure you I would've drank it if it wasn't for the fact that I was Vlogging. I have so many videos to film and I can't afford to lose 5 days to recover from some stomach illness when my visa is only for 2 weeks.
When harald is invading a home, he is really invading a home😂. Even checking the pot's for pork. And when they offer him some water he is fleeing the scene😂
Should've had some pork...
dont eat their pork! maybe the dogs will not be touched that way :D
Load it up!
just like US army, come someone house and find some VC or destroy food for not feeding VC
As long as they have pork
from vietnam with love. friendly people from mountainous area. the old man you want to know the age. he is 73. and that's a typical traditonal vietnam house with many generation live in it, in countryside and mountainous area, we dont have a lot visitors, just a simple life base on agriculture, day by day, and your appearance cheer them up alot. Currently i'm living in hanoi, a hustle, crowed city,. Seeing your vids like this, really touching me, give me an indiscribable feeling and make my mood up. Thank you Harold.
Greetings to Vietnam!
thank you for translating that to us.
Thank you very much for the insight, I was browsing comments looking for this. Any further translation would be greatly appreciated :)

Seeing the old lad salute you at 2:42 shows how much he remembers about the war. If only there were no communication barriers I'm sure there'll be a great story to tell.
Well that touched me , am shedding a tear , thanks for pointing that out
ssw - I saw that.
Outside In he was a young man between 1955 and 1973. he was definitely a kid still in 1955
TRAVEL 108 point i was making was that he definitely wasn't an older guy during the Vietnam war
to the due who say he doesn't know why the school have to dig underground shelter in 1983 cause the fk Chinese shoting arty every day over to Vietnam and we have border fighting up to the 90 lol , they with drew from they fail invasion in 1979 , but they where still holding some high ground in the border and keep shelling arty over to Vietnam side every day
I love how harald doesnt understand a single word they are saying but he can communicate with smiles and they understand what hes trying to say(sorta) just by that , good man harald
Actually they have no idea what he is trying to say, but still smiles all round ;)
Power Of YES Man
Aziz i think they see sincerity and curiosity in his eyes. Any person when asked about his own self feels good. The fact that Herald wants to learn more about them and the way they live makes them feel important. The eyes are the mirrors to the soul , they say. Herald in a way communicates with them like that and they like what they see in his eyes. They realize that this is a good guy.
Seems like the host family is from the ethnic group in the north of Vietnam. I can hardly understand their conversation. It sounds like they speak the mix Vietnamese langugage with their ethic language.
Harald, just a small piece of good advice, when greeting a stranger dog, dont ever bring your hand down above its head, bring the hand in in front of the dog, so it can see the hand come and sniff it. Bringing the hand down to pat it on top of its head on a new dog, might end up in a dog bite, simply because the dog gets a bit scared. As a person that has only owned rescue dogs and street dogs that needed to learn trust, this is the best piece of advice i can give anyone that has to greet a new dog. Most living things dont like something that come from above that we cant quite see, like when we get hit by a hanging branch or a falling stick from a tree we didnt see, we react as if someone had attacked us from above or behind. Its all about those predator eyes facing forwards i think, the field of view is slimmer for dogs and humans than with deers ect.
Thanks. Appreciate it
@@HaraldBaldr I know how important dogs have been to our ancestors in Scandinavia and how well we still treat dogs, as members of the family and not just as a pet in most cases, and the last thing i want is the "Friend of Dog, God of Pig" loosing a finger in a remote rural village in a Asian country while on a roadtrip trying to befriend mans best friend :) Stay safe on the Road.

Thank you so much for your videos in Viet Nam and you're helping for them. Especially in the higher mountain where has many people are friendly. I will explain some situations in this video. First, the people in your video are ethnic in Vietnam so they have another language for their communication, not vietnamese so sometimes it is hard to understand what they are talking about. Secondly, they don't know how to use sunscreen, they just think that you use it to make the skin white. Then the man has a calling with someone and he tell them wait him on the street, not his wife. Next, when you give them money, they are so happy but they think you don't know the value of money in VN so you give them too much. And the position where you think they take shower in their house but its uses for wash dishes in their life style. Finally the old man is 73 years old.I think he older than the same age.
Thank you so much for the translation!!! 👍

The man who loved the sunscreen probably thought it is a whitening cream! The house was so organised and tidy. This is what I observed when I was in Vietnam, people with little but always tidy and organised. Credit to them!

Hi Harold!
I enjoy your style. It was sweet to watch you give a bit of money to the gracious family. They kindly let you explore their homestead as an immediate friend. Nothing expected! Thanks Again, Laura from New Hampshire
Harald Invades is genuinely my favorite segment of your videos...!
This is the side of youtube that really shines, much more intimate than any documentary filming will ever be. Where else can we experience, without going ourselves, a glimpse into the day to day life of people all around the world. What I find interesting is just how little I know about other cultures, it is just not something I ever thought about. This kind of travel and vlogging is going to inspire many others to follow a similar path.
It's so amazing how friendly and accommodating the people are.
Immagine Harald doing this in the America. "Harald invades Detroit! Let me in!"

The language barrier makes everything more magical. Nothing is understood yet everyone understands each other.
Bring some envelopes with you so that way you give them money, it's a more respectable way to give it. When you give someone just cash, it's more of a transaction like buying food or paying for a hotel. A gift feels better in an envelope.
Yes, a red envelop (Lai Xi) (Lucky Money). Excellent suggestion.
Ah I see, we also have that etiquette here in Indonesia.
.
As an alternative, if there is no envelope, you fold the money and hold it in your hand (so people can't see your money), give the money as you shake his/her hand, and gently say something like "Please accept little money from me as gratitude".
