Florence, early XVI century. Although widely considered a genius by his contemporaries, Michelangelo Buonarroti (Alberto Testone) is reduced to poverty and depleted by his struggle to finish the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. When his commissioner and head of the Della Rovere nobility Pope Julius II dies, Michelangelo becomes obsessed with sourcing the finest marble to complete his tomb. The artist’s loyalty is tested when Leo X, of the rival Medici family, ascends to the papacy and charges him with a lucrative new commission - the façade of the San Lorenzo basilica. Forced to lie to maintain favor with both families, Michelangelo is progressively tormented by suspicion and hallucinations, leading him to ruthlessly examine his own moral and artistic failings. Written and directed by Andrei Konchalovsky, SIN is a gripping reflection on the agony and ecstasy of individual greatness, and the profound humanity behind the legend of the Renaissance.

Best film of 2021. I sense a lot of influence from Tarkovsky’s Andreu Rublev, and it’s a fitting and beautiful correspondence between the two great artists searching for God in their work. I loved the touchstone of Dante that Michelangelo has for his soliloquies and the entire palette of the film is a feast for the eyes. Bravo!

Sin was an absolute master piece work. I loved every minute of it, would loved to see touching on the making of the Pieta and David statues but i liked the way the director was focusing more on Michelangelo's internal life and trials/tribulations. loved that wasn't any stupid hollywood type music score either.

So I don't understand: I "discovered" this movie only a day ago when reading a review in the 'zine *Chronicles* (Nov 2021). Couldn't believe!!! Just two days ago watched an online all-day program on this year's Oscar Contenders. It was informative, entertaining, and I came away far more interested in seeing the "Best of" '21 movies. But nowhere had I heard or seen anything about Konchalovsky's Il Peccato (Sin). It never played at our two local "art house" cinemas. ????? Many good movies were released in 2021, a number of them were intriguing international films, but why was this one lost in the shuffle?! What a shame ~ surely it should have made the five finalists for Oscar Best Foreign Film? Ah well, awards are nice but not a full measure of a work of art's worth after all. Still would've been wonderful for the movie - and for Andrei Konchalovsky - to receive deserving recognition.

Hi Lisa, thanks for your comment and kind words about SIN. We had pounded the pavement getting this film in front of every arthouse theater in the US and Canada that we could find and had a good film publicist working the press, but we got limited interest. (this was during Covid a year ago, before theaters could physically open...so it played virtually) The NY Times, where arthouse films start out in their theatrical journey, gave the film a lousy review, and actually plugged for another film in the review, which is the ultimate insult. We were very irritated at this, but nothing we can do about it. We did everything we could to get this film out in front of audiences just short of spending a lot of money we would never see a return on. An Oscar campaign is very expensive and can easily result in a ton of money spent and nothing to show for it, but the Russian submission went to DEAR COMRADES! anyway for 2021. (Each country can only submit one picture per year for the Best International Feature award....Russia probably won't be submitting anything for a while after this) Anyway, thanks for weighing in and for your appreciation for Mr. Konchalovsky and arthouse films.
We have a 4K restoration of a landmark Soviet classic coming up soon, so check out our website in a few weeks and/or sign up for our home video mailing list to keep abreast of our new film releases.

They show a dark, crazy, dirty artist. The director avoided touching the topic of his sexuality, which for him and his art was a major part of his life. I disliked the film. I hope they make a good film about this amazing genius.

This really looks good, but I'm afraid they'll try promoting the myth that he was homosexual.

Director Andrei Konchalovsky handles Michelangelo's character with special care and focuses on the trials and tribulations that go into creating M's sculptures and art, and the politics he must contend with. If you rent/purchase the film on Vimeo on Demand or DVD, there's behind the scenes bonus videos that have interviews with the director and he explains his philosophy on making the film and how he chose to portray M.
