CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The life of renowned street artist Jean Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Andy Warhol was a phenomenon who warrants a lot of explaining: a completely colorless mega-star celebrity, and a kind of LaBrea Tarpit for a vivid and talented collection of oddballs in the New York scene. He fostered their continued degeneration into weird lifestyles and heavy drug use; and at the same time acted as their mentor, agent, and sponsor. One artist who came to be part of Warhol's "scene" was Jean Michel Basquiat, an antisocial street-bum who went from writing graffiti on alley walls to being the toast of New York City's art world. This film biography chronicles the progression of Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) and his progression from living in cardboard boxes to penthouses, his romances, his drug use, and his death in 1988 at age 27. Along the way, he never stopped detesting the rich, including art agent Bruno Bischofberger (Dennis Hopper), and he never lost his naivete. Warhol (David Bowie) picks up some of the pieces as Basquiat lurches through the art scene. Cameo appearances by Tatum O'Neal and Courtney Love add spice to this interesting film.

The number of legendary actors in this movie is staggering
No joke I mean come on right? I mean whose idea was it to cast David Bowie as Andy Warhol?! Perfect casting top notch cast. Also I had no idea this was Jeffrey Wright's first film.
@@youngniall6910 If you go to the Wikipedia page for the movie Basquiat, there is a paragraph about how Bowie was cast as Warhol.
They took Bowie to do Warhol ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
"No one wants to be a part of a generation who ignores another Van Gogh..."
The final line of the trailer is kinda ironic considering how overlooked and underexposed actor Jeffrey Wright is to the world. The man is a massive talent, I wanna see him in more leading roles.
You hit it wright on the nail!!!!!!!
I wanna give this comment a million likes and loves and claps!
Says the person who doesn't use grammar properly.
Lmao I didn't see your reaction on the video, only in Google plus now. It was a reaction to MrDubja.
But if it makes you feel any better...
Alice Pan ya I'm not dissing Basquait , I though the acting was a bit off, sorry for being disrespectful
Basquiat did everything right in his career. He marketed himself, made connections and made powerful people fall in love with his work. Doesn't matter what his art looked like or if you love or hate it he did what you're supposed to do as an artist at the bottom, spread your name around in the right places.
And made amazing paintings.
@@thomasrainbow Agreed
WORD
I watched a documentary that said when he was alive no one would even show his work, they didn't appreciate that style then. As soon as he died then his work started to get noticed and became in-fashion. Sick world we live in

💪🏽🙏🏽
If you've seen documentaries on Jean-Michel Basquiat, you will know how amazing of a performance Jeffrey Wright put on in this movie. It's astounding, almost scary, how accurately he captures Basquiat's mannerisms and way of speech. This is made all the more difficult by how subtle and quiet Basquiat was in real life.
If you ever want to discuss criminally under appreciated movies, this is it.
I've watched a few of Basquiat's interviews, so my knowledge is fairly limited, but the way Wright managed to capture Basquiat's mannerisms and speech patterns was incredible.
*Jeffrey Wright* - what a POWERHOUSE of talent this man has brought to film + cinema!
What an absolute tragedy *Basquiat* died so young - one of his paintings of a skull , sold at auction in New York for more than $110.5 million, the highest price ever paid at auction for a work by an American artist or an artwork created after 1980. Wish he were alive to enjoy his fame.
Saw this movie in art class in it's entirety......great movie.....good for the inspiring artist!
That was David Bowie?! lol
Yes that's David Bowie trying to act like Andy Warhol. He's doing a pretty good job of it but David Bowie has a difficult time getting rid of his British accent in this.
@@Sharperthanu1 I thought he was really mis-cast in this, other than his resemblance to Warhol.
Yes!!
@@MikeRoberts1964 Julian Schnabel once said he thinks David Bowie wasnt a good Warhol, but he created his own version of Wahol - and thats what he liked about it.
Jeffery Wright did an amazing job!!
This should be the highest rated comment.
This movie has one of the best ensemble casts ever
This cast is epic.
It was so much fun studying him...Refreshing
I find this movie so inspiring. Especially as an artist who slept in a parking garage elevator last winter. Except for the whole addiction part, but I'm getting over mine. Anyone know the PIL song used in the beginning of this trailer? Also, anyone here because of Jay-Z's new hair do?
public image
The film has real moments.
When miramax actually distributed proper movies.
Fab 5 Freddy stated that Andy Warhol did not “discover” Basquiat. Andy Warhol simply heard about what Basquait was doing and wanted to be apart of it .
Warhol used him for clout. Andy never sent him to rehab
@@ryanharrison2252 Andy used a looot of ppl at the factory as well.. Edie for example
We need more movies like this.
What a great cast
JEFFREY WRIGHT SO AWESOME IN BASQUIAT 1996 FILM !!
What a stellar cast! I am going to see this.
And Williem Dafoe ;)
2 Commissioner Gordons in one movie? Nice
Bwahahahhaha
To think, I live in the city that bred talent like this.
Your city also bred rats the size of cats and people like the Trumps: You win some, you lose some, I guess.
Talent? A four year old could paint those paintings.
@@mistermax3034 i dont get how fuckwads would even pay for basqshit's paintings
@@MikeRoberts1964 NY has the good taste to not to have been suckered by that con man and in 2 elections he didn't even win his home state and he whines & cried as he left in humilation. What's Florida's excuse for welcoming him with open arms? If you want to criticize NY, pick on the gentrifiers who've pushed people like Basquiat further & further from the real part of the city.
No one knew Jean-Michel as well as I did. When I was in college, he spent a few nights over at my house in the East Village (summer 1988- 89) and took me to a lot of clubs. I knew he was sniffing cocaine but never caught him doing other drugs. Another friend, Reginald Chevry who passed away recently, gave Jean Michel most of the canvases. Upcoming designer Gary made most of Basquiat's clothes. This movie is biased and full of inaccuracies. Jean-Michel and Andy Warhol weren't as close friends as the movie insinuates. Plus, he sold his early paintings for a cheap price to an art dealer (a woman who claimed to be Madonna's cousin). Last, but not least. he was born in 1965; not 1966.
well wiki says he was born in 1960.
@@jackr.9313 yeah the original story doesn't add up. 1989? the number, another summer
Awww poor guy. He died so young. He was a crazy genius 😢
The beautiful quote right at this film's opening just about sums it up......as Jean Michel Basquiat climbs out of a cardboard box
-- his temporary residence 💔
RIP: JMB
Bowie
Warhol
Dennis Hopper
-- thanks to everyone involved in making this great movie 🙏🏼🌹🙏🏽
Back when the same guy narrated every trailer 😂 dude probably made so much money
I know, right?! I miss hearing his awesome voice narrating the trailers. He was the best one yet!
Rent this movie and watch it if you have not. It's worth it. It's also one of my top 20 favorites.
I remember seeing this in theaters a really shitty theater damn I miss those days but anyway ugh the movie was a little off but in retrospective I guess it's okay it definitely grown on me over the years and even more now especially that Bowie passes away ❤️
This is really one of the best films I've seen about the art world. All the performances are great.
Claire Forlani, what a stunning woman,
I liked her in Mallrats.
Everytime i see Joe Black i think of her as Claire Gorlami
Wow never knew Jeffery write played this legend mane legend he is too thoe
wait, gary oldman plays julian schnabel? that's like when eddie harris played mark rothko in "Rothko"
Been watching this film since 1998
the whole time i watched this trailer i thought the one playing Basquiat is the real one facepalm!
If Andy said that about black painters not being important, Then were the hell did Picasso get his inspirations from? The so-called artworld is a joke.
Great point
With a cast like that, it's a wonder NYC still exists with all the scenery they must have been chewing.
That's not a bad thing, though
Sadly - If it wasn’t for Warhol highlighting and pushing the art of his deceased friend, out of guilt and despair for not being there for him, Basquiat would have been just another crazy artist, and his art would have been discarded, like the many others who compulsively created art on anything they could get their brushes on.
Warhol died prior to Basquiat.. 😢
My favorite painter
I remember watching this movie 🍿 back in the day 😁!!? thanks again for sharing this public
Whr can I watch it
przecudowny film! a obsada...genialna!
Ensemble cast, discovered this movie by chance. Wright posted a picture on Instagram with the hair and I was like wait what!
Jeffrey used to look like Lenny Kravitz, he must've got tons of poon in the 90s
A dope cast about a dope man. I'm in
Bro this movie got everybody! Time to watch!
They picked the perfect song for the trailer
PiL, a band that only “if you know, you know”
...WAIT!..is this freaking "Narcisse" from the "Boardwalk"?...
I love this film it about a very important person but not only that it hard to explain
this is very good movie
Good movies were still made in the 90s.
After early 2000s I don’t know, movies that are mainstream( even independents ) not as good .
Finally got to see this on Starz Cinema. Now I have all these feels. The last line in the movie is him telling his friend, "Fuck Hawaii. Let's go to Ireland," and then it said he died at just age 27 (I always thought he was in his 30s when he passed!). I wondered, 'Did he ever get to go to Ireland?! ;_;'
"Do you wana buy sum ignorint art?
Ignoart
The actor who can imitate is much more talented than the painter who cannot draw
Comissoner Gordon Comissoner Gordon & Green Goblin
I love this movie
Guy was a legend!!! im from new york he was trulyba great artist
hermosa película
Yo, no funny, his art is fire once you understand it. It’s a mental level most haven’t reach yet.
Best Movie
Watch the documentary instead
where can I see basquiat the radiant child ,
I enjoy this movie -- Jeffrey Wright & Gary Oldman especially; the way they 'chum up'; but I got much more (more accuracy) from a BBC Documentary -- also on RUclips
But I'm STILL trying to find 'The Radiant Child'!
70's and 80's belonged to the middle and upper middle class people, which
had became millionaires from the Economic Boom of the 50's.
They had the money but felt had no taste, so they need it something to be
connected with high class values.
Had no castles, no dress code, no ancestors. But they could have art...!!!
Not necessarily a real taste for it, education better, BUT they still had the money,
so this is where.............. ioLas, Worhal and others came in.
Because everything classical was locked in museums and private collections, They
invented the ''New ART'', baptised everything as ''artistic valued'', because was ready-for-sale,
into these poor arrogant rich middle class people.
The Demand was so highly, Supply had to be equally big.........!!!!
And that's different from the 90s- 2010s how?
I will watch it.
GRAZIE RAGAZZI
How do you become rich and famous -how s long does it take?
Four years
So Jim Gordon helped Jim Gordon
Epic film ❤❤❤
Basquiat estate did not want to have anything to do with this movie.Basquiat's father was not to happy with this guy playing his son and Julian running the show.
I challenge 50 Cent to a public duel over his homophobic disrespect for this man, his art and legacy. FIGHT ME FOOL!
50 even old would absolute wreck you lolll
Bernard!! Haha
Wow 😍
Anaylsis, when did you become Basquait?
podcast Art History Babes did a really Great podcast on him,
this IS great!
Public Image Ltd. - Public Image :)
So, you play a PIL song in the actual trailer and he's relegated to the "and others" part of the artists on the soundtrack?!?! Shame!!!!!!!
Agreed! Johnny Rotten's legend.
Where was his Oscar??
Wait the whole movie they pronounce his name wrong¿
Same trailer as honey we shrunk ourselves and Johnny tsunami
Dudes in hell if he didn't repent of his sins through Jesus Christ.
That's the cold truth that the world hates hearing, but facts don't care about feelings.
Ask for forgiveness for condemning this man as if you were God.
Blasphemous hypocrite.
Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Now that’s the real truth you’re going to hate hearing. A sinner acting holier than thou, using god as an attack dog to spew hate, and bigotry.
I wonder if he had a relationship with Debbie Harry?
Remember good movie s?

is that Jefferey wright?
Who is that?
You're not Wrong!
Great movie. Horrible preview: Too much HYPE.
Anyone know the opening songs title?

the film didn´t come across as very 80´s
The PBS documentary Radiant Child was better than this film. That being said what do I know.
Great
Reality turned into a nightmare...
I was a teenager on a date. We went to cinema and the other films were sold out. We got tickets on this movie and watched it. It was so boring I wanted to hang myself. Worst date ever
my goodness the voice over!!! terrible!

ohhh... The 90's :P
the movie was mad in 90s, but it was set in 70s and 80s
