    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The life of renowned street artist Jean Michel Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Andy Warhol was a phenomenon who warrants a lot of explaining: a completely colorless mega-star celebrity, and a kind of LaBrea Tarpit for a vivid and talented collection of oddballs in the New York scene. He fostered their continued degeneration into weird lifestyles and heavy drug use; and at the same time acted as their mentor, agent, and sponsor. One artist who came to be part of Warhol's "scene" was Jean Michel Basquiat, an antisocial street-bum who went from writing graffiti on alley walls to being the toast of New York City's art world. This film biography chronicles the progression of Basquiat (Jeffrey Wright) and his progression from living in cardboard boxes to penthouses, his romances, his drug use, and his death in 1988 at age 27. Along the way, he never stopped detesting the rich, including art agent Bruno Bischofberger (Dennis Hopper), and he never lost his naivete. Warhol (David Bowie) picks up some of the pieces as Basquiat lurches through the art scene. Cameo appearances by Tatum O'Neal and Courtney Love add spice to this interesting film.

Basquiat did everything right in his career. He marketed himself, made connections and made powerful people fall in love with his work. If you've seen documentaries on Jean-Michel Basquiat, you will know how amazing of a performance Jeffrey Wright put on in this movie. It's astounding, almost scary, how accurately he captures Basquiat's mannerisms and way of speech. This is made all the more difficult by how subtle and quiet Basquiat was in real life.

What an absolute tragedy *Basquiat* died so young - one of his paintings of a skull , sold at auction in New York for more than $110.5 million, the highest price ever paid at auction for a work by an American artist or an artwork created after 1980. Wish he were alive to enjoy his fame.

No one knew Jean-Michel as well as I did. When I was in college, he spent a few nights over at my house in the East Village (summer 1988- 89) and took me to a lot of clubs. I knew he was sniffing cocaine but never caught him doing other drugs. Another friend, Reginald Chevry who passed away recently, gave Jean Michel most of the canvases. Upcoming designer Gary made most of Basquiat's clothes. This movie is biased and full of inaccuracies. Jean-Michel and Andy Warhol weren't as close friends as the movie insinuates. Plus, he sold his early paintings for a cheap price to an art dealer (a woman who claimed to be Madonna's cousin). Last, but not least. he was born in 1965; not 1966.

Sadly - If it wasn’t for Warhol highlighting and pushing the art of his deceased friend, out of guilt and despair for not being there for him, Basquiat would have been just another crazy artist, and his art would have been discarded, like the many others who compulsively created art on anything they could get their brushes on.

70's and 80's belonged to the middle and upper middle class people, which
had became millionaires from the Economic Boom of the 50's.
They had the money but felt had no taste, so they need it something to be
    connected with high class values.
Had no castles, no dress code, no ancestors. But they could have art...!!!
Not necessarily a real taste for it, education better, BUT they still had the money,
so this is where.............. ioLas, Worhal and others came in.
Because everything classical was locked in museums and private collections, They
invented the ''New ART'', baptised everything as ''artistic valued'', because was ready-for-sale,
into these poor arrogant rich middle class people.
The Demand was so highly, Supply had to be equally big.........!!!!

I was a teenager on a date. We went to cinema and the other films were sold out. We got tickets on this movie and watched it. It was so boring I wanted to hang myself. Worst date ever

I’m sickened that Andy Warhol unalived this young man and got away with it!! Set him up and injected him with heroin and wasn’t found for a whole year…..
