I have researched his art for over 25 years... Jean Michel Basquiat is the first afro-latino self-taught art star in the so-called outsider art movement. A high school drop-out turned a worldwide sensation is certainly an incredible phenomenon. He did what Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, and Wassily Kandinsky in emulating child-like art. In my opinion, he created a very unique urbanized language strictly his own... an original. Very few artists today can be that an original voice, Basquiat is that.
Therese wrong, he was a full Afro-latino, his Haitian/Puerto Rican roots are that... descendant from the Taino and Carib Indian tribes mixed with African and European bloodlines. Both Islands "La Isla Espanola" commonly know as the Dominican Republic/Haiti and Puerto Rico are the origins of both tribes I explained earlier. Those three countries are from my roots as well, as I am Afro-Latino by heritage.
To confirm read Frank Moya Pons's " The Dominican Republic, A National History " all your answers are there....all that other stuff you hear... well just propaganda that is politically fueled by modern society. The Taino and Carib indians dominated the west indian culture in that cluster of Islands.

Fun fact The Weeknd was inspired by his hair style that's why through out some time he rocked the whole "Palm tree" look until late 2016 when he cut it off for the starboy cover of his album
@2:08 That is not Basquiat's mother. His father remarried and his biological mother whom Basquiat would visit frequently was admitted into a mental hospital. My art instructor in college made the mistake of saying his mother was white. I was quick to correct her. His mother is a black woman from Puerto Rico.
@mjGOAT lebronNOPE I mean he drew like that on purpose. There was a rhythm and a style. Some artists are great not cause they’re technically gifted but because they have a unique style.
His art is sensational, and has stood the test of time because you can see the pain that we all feel, in a perspective that captures his unique angle of sight. I looks like he is visiting a different dimension that we cant see but is definitely there.
he captured the zeitgeist of nyc. there was magic in the air, and despite the media's depiction of the city as sodom, it was never so vibrant and creative, and hasn't been since. i miss those days and now realize how special they were...jmb was a product of all that energy and was smart enough to tap into it...we lost him way to early, but then he wouldn't have been jmb if we didn't...
he was exploited ..for sure ..... there were /are other artists of color in soho at that time , but he fell in with the wrong crowd ... it becomes dangerous when the artist is worth more dead than alive ... thank God he left his best works with his sisters ....
You could make an argument for Picasso, but I don’t really think you could for basquiat. Picasso created a modernist, more abstract movement that changed the art world as a whole. Basquiat was just riding the greater wave of the New York art scene of the 70s. While I like his art better, I don’t really think they can be compared on that level

We are in a time of deception in many ways, where that which is bad, is now good. But the truth is never subjective- there is no beauty in ugliness, there is not talent in the talentless.
jnorth1000 I’m not saying that his art should be worth how much it is worth, but I still think it looks great. If people spend money on it then fair, that’s their choice to buy it. The stuff he did as well was quite original as no one had done some those concepts before and how he drew them, like the weird alien characters and the tall black figures. Some of the stuff he did took hours and hours to draw as sometimes he did use pencil and sketch. I can’t remember the name of it but one of them was extremely detailed it was really dope.
TRIPLE AAA That's cool. if you think it looks great that's cool. I prefer Realism and Impressionism, over Pop Art and the like. If you like it, that's good. I don't want to offend anyone. But others have a right to express their opinion about it, even if it goes against yours. I have better things to spend $110,000,000 on. If it's great to you, then that's great. When I look at it, I'm only impressed at how unimpressive it is. Musta took dude 10 minutes to do most of those paintings. Okay...maybe 15 minutes
jnorth1000 idk about the 10 minutes thing. the lady whos basement he worked out of said he would be down there like it was a 9-5. I do think people were over praising it to be unique and buy this “new style” because they knew they could flip it. People would buy his paintings for 2k and are now selling them for 110,000,000, thats art collectors for ya.
god dammit it isn't, " pray for soup!!" it is, "pay for soup_ build a fort_set that on fire."... Basquiat was like carvaggio in that way he ran on the street
The part about him getting hit by a car while playing basketball is false. There is an interview with his sister who was there and she said he was hit running across the street. This video has quite a few inaccuracies.

Annina Nosei didn't offer Basquiat his first solo show. His first solo show was organized by Diego Cortez with Emilio Mazzoli in Modena, Italy in May 1981. Later that year, Basquiat joined Annina Nosei's gallery where he had his first American solo show in March 1982.
I had it on my original channel. But, unfortunately, I received a copyright strike. They waited till It was at nearly 450,000 views. In less than 9 months. Sad, the company didn't give me a warning. My channel wasn't even monetized. And PS. "Slavic Sandie"...Looking good. :) :)
Yes I remember! Because I watche the documentary in the summer of 2015. The new there was an odd period where I couldn't find it anymore. I'm not surprised youtube did that to you. It's like playing monopoly and with the new changes who knows what's next.
I oddly enough; I was set to have a Skype interview with Micheal Holman a week before I received my final copyright strike. I connected with him on a Gray music video. I was shocked he actually replied to a comment I made. :) Living down here in Miami has been an interesting 5 years, but a sad and frustrating 5 years. Oh well. Thanks for remembering me.

what`s great about him is that he is avantgarde and commercial at the same time. The elite can buy his paintings for hundreds of millions, but we common people can by a pair of shoes with his design on. That is it`s not just " fine art", but also designs that can be used in the everyday life.
Just got back from New York, Basquiat's influence has done wonders for the city, well, him and perhaps 911. It is incredible! Thank you Basquiat. No thank you 911
Newsflash: Basquiat sisters are having an Exhibition of some of his private writings, notebooks, some private things never seen. There's a video on line with them. I think the show is currently sold out.
My family introduced me to Basquiat last May at the Brant Gallery in NYC. Electrifying, indeed. Just saw the Warhol exhibit in Chicago.....boring until I saw the collaboration between the two.
Wtf? Why wouldn't I know these things? These aren't rare facts by any means. Additionally it is absolutely blowing me how the speaker doesn't pronounce the 't' at the end of Basquiat. This is a concise summary of his life... but nothing new for someone familiar with him.
UpTheFuckingSoy Goyem all music began as banging sticks together friend. Incoherent means nothing in art. Giant Steps by John Coltrane changes keys almost every single measure, is that incoherent to you? Shakespeare made up words, was that incoherent? Art is conceptual, and I recommend that you realize this before you make a fool of yourself again.
thanks Heaps, so nice to hear about The artist not the addiction, yes it may help to shape a person......... BUT it is not the person Thank you again :)
I've never been a fan of Basquiat's art but I find the artist himself, to be fascinating. I can't help but admire someone who was able to become famous and wealthy while creating such primitive artwork.
what about the movie made about basquiat with a allstar cast...david bowie, dennis hopper and a list of other big name actors, it was a great movie for people to peek in the world of art..check it out.
I agree it's one of the better movies in the art world i personally found his story much more fascinating than his actual art. Although i do like some of his stuff. I find the relationship he had with warhol really interesting
@@sarahnicole45 I obviously said. That it's not "French" it's own Language. I know because my grandmother is Haitian. And I'm from Florida.. which has the largest Population of Haitian in the US.
Hunnie, 55 year old white guy and a 20 something black dude , friendship. This doesn't exist at all. he wanted a piece . I am yet to see a white girl for a lasting friendship with a black girl her contemporary. its all superficial and you know it
Warhol had a crush on him, and probably hoped to "turn" Basquiat or seduce him. Warhol knew the young man's genius and wanted to basque in the limelight with him. Friendship? A true one? I have my doubts.
Brilliant a true pioneer well ahead of his time but look who he hung out with the master of them all . I love his music crossover & history an inspiration to Banksy too ?
Another fact check: legend of Jean Michel-basquiast's "production" of Beat Bop are by most accounts exaggerated. He was present and in the studio and did the cover art, correct. Rap master K-Rob who was the other emcee on the record with the great Rammellzee stated that Basquiat tried to hand them written lyrics which they both tossed aside in favor of them using their own improvised freestyle verse they created on the spot. This i know as true Hip Hop student & educator.

@@palomamorio ouais je sais ! Vous êtes bilingue vous également ?
It's AMAZIIIIING !!!
Beautifully enlightening and fabulous display of Basquiat's works of genius art.
Love Basquiat because he is an exquisite human being.
And was a heroin addict.
the best,,, the only REAL American artist....
knew everything here... there is also a few great books out there. grey's full album is here on youtube,,, that band also had the guy who wrote Buffalo66.. that dude is from around where I was born..
Hahahaha naaaa....
What makes him "real"?
hahahaahha totally
Shaun Clark yeah you must be addicted to emotionless scribble go look at a portrait while we like to see the color of emotion.
He was playing stickball when a car hit him according to a close friend in a BBC documentary.
great video!
Critical 27 years old... If you are an ultra-famous artist... Joplin, Hendrix, Cobain, Basquiat and others!
what`s great about him is that he is avantgarde and commercial at the same time.
Art is Everything, Everything is Art! Duane Henry Hoefer Lyon! USA and Manitoba Canada!
Indeed a radiant child. I intend on acquiring his work in my gallery.

11:07 mispronounced album several times. The album is called Beat Bop; the narrator calls it Beat POP
Yeah, I noticed a few other mispronounciations. Like composer Ravel is not *ravel* like wool gathering. Maybe she's a robo.
I love this channel so much , I appreciate ur work so much ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ great women
Thank you!
He was playing stickball. Not basketball
legail1 indeed
And affluent in french too
Yepp
My family introduced me to Basquiat last May at the Brant Gallery in NYC. Electrifying, indeed. Just saw the Warhol exhibit in Chicago.....boring until I saw the collaboration between the two.
Bonjour artiste haïtien 🇭🇹
His work is energetic... but time will tell like it will with colour field or minimalism.
Wtf? Why wouldn't I know these things? These aren't rare facts by any means. Additionally it is absolutely blowing me how the speaker doesn't pronounce the 't' at the end of Basquiat.
This is a concise summary of his life... but nothing new for someone familiar with him.
Timothy, the t at the end is silent in French. It is a French name from his Haitian father.
True legend.
Jean Michel Basquiat was a great painter and artist.
NO HE WASNT - HE IS ONE OF THE WORST EVER ..THE ONLY WORSE WERE THE ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISTS OFTHE 1950S.
Art is about how it makes you feel.. not a literal interpretation.
Yo I love this kid as a character I even taught at the school he attended for four years, a very artsy place, but I don’t understand his art at all!
thanks Heaps, so nice to hear about The artist not the addiction, yes it may help to shape a person......... BUT it is not the person Thank you again :)
Wow. Thanks for this info on this art legend. I have always been interested in him.
I've never been a fan of Basquiat's art but I find the artist himself, to be fascinating. I can't help but admire someone who was able to become famous and wealthy while creating such primitive artwork.
Your brain is primitive like your face
Your comment.is primitive
KID CUDI should be considered to play him in his adult life
I do find it funny that everything they think I didn't know is pretty much all I know.
That wasn't Al Diaz it was Keith Haring.
I'm into art so i like this dude and his art
My favorite artist by far. Had my daughter August 12th. Kind of a trip...
🎨A Living Legend 🎨
One and only thing that should matter.. TALENTED 🙏
what about the movie made about basquiat with a allstar cast...david bowie, dennis hopper and a list of other big name actors, it was a great movie for people to peek in the world of art..check it out.
what is it called? lol
I agree it's one of the better movies in the art world i personally found his story much more fascinating than his actual art. Although i do like some of his stuff. I find the relationship he had with warhol really interesting
HOW CAN YOU RECOMMEND A MOVIE AND NOT GIVE THE TITLE!?!
It’s called...basquiat
Saw it and enjoyed it for too many reasons to list...check it out if you can.
Loved this.
Basquiat is so unique
Very interesting !!
He spoke English, French, and Spanish fluently
Haitian Creole not French
Hatian Creole is NOT French. It has French elements, yes, but it's not French.
@@sarahnicole45 it's definitely not "French" it's a Mix of African Dialects/Partial "French"... It's it's own Language...
@@ahgtrell has French elements to it with roots of words and grammar when written and spoken, not French at all.
@@sarahnicole45 I obviously said. That it's not "French" it's own Language. I know because my grandmother is Haitian. And I'm from Florida.. which has the largest Population of Haitian in the US.
I love this video.
Long live Jean
Pretty awesome ..
The exhibition in NYC closes on
Jan. 1 2023 ... IT IS AWESOME ..
Every piece of his art is chewing your brain and snaring your heart.
15 Things You Didn’t Know *inserts key elements from any basquiat documentary*
Warhol was NOT his mentor.
whorehol wanted to smash. that's why he was around JMB.
Lechiffresix six I saw what you did there 😋 and your right.
Hunnie, 55 year old white guy and a 20 something black dude , friendship. This doesn't exist at all. he wanted a piece . I am yet to see a white girl for a lasting friendship with a black girl her contemporary. its all superficial and you know it
Lechiffresix six you're wrong. My bestfriend is literally, exactly 30 years older than me and he is white.
YEP, JUST THE COVER ART...while he stood around high on junk nodding off in the corner.
