- I collect various media formats and among them is the Selectavision Video Disc by RCA, also known as CED (Capacitance Electronic Disc.) The format was essentially movies on vinyl records. It was brought to market in the early 80's and had a short life, easily beaten out by VHS and Laserdisc. Nevertheless, it's fascinating technology to me and from time to time I will come across the discs at antique stores and thrift shops.
Presented here is a RandomAcess CED titled "The Life and Work of Michelangelo" which was released in 1983. To my knowledge, it was never released on any other formats. I enjoy history a lot, especially of the Italian Renaissance era. For the sake of preservation and a bit of fun, I wanted to share it with all of you. The first part discusses Michelangelo's life, while the second part dives into extensive looks at his finest artwork.
The audio and video may be poor at some points due to degradation of the vinyl, unfortunately this is entirely unavoidable when dealing with CED's. In my experience, I would actually consider this one of the best CED's in my collection as far as quality is concerned.
I claim no ownership over this material and this channel is not monetized. This is strictly a preservation effort for collectors of hard-to-find media, history buffs and enthusiasts of fine art alike!
Please enjoy and check out some of my other videos on this channel! :) Приколы
I look forward to watching this. Nice surprise finding it here by chance. I never tire of programs about Michelangelo, my interest in him spurred originally by the great movie "The Agony & the Ecstasy". It came to theaters in '65, I believe, though I didn't see it until many years later on TV. After seeing it for the 1st time, I read the novel upon which it's based by Irving Stone, which was superb. After only a quick peek at this selection, I thought maybe it was from a network TV airing in the 60's, perhaps, as the 3 U.S. networks aired serious, high-quality history & cultural programs on a regular basis in that era, a trend abandoned now for many decades. Alexander Scourby narrated ALOT of docs back in the 50's & 60's, so I thought this was from the 60's, most likely, especially since it's in color, again from a network TV airing but I can see that I'm wrong. I'm still surprised, though, because by 1983 multiculturalism & political correctness was setting-in & beginning to permeate society-at-large. Shows like this one were disappearing fast. Excellent, serious, & thoughtful programs & series like Kenneth Clark's "Civilisation" & Alistair Cooke's "America" were commonly seen on U.S. TV networks, as well as PBS. Other such series included "Triumph of the West", "The Christians", Michael Wood's "Art of the Western World" & "In Search of Shakespeare", the list goes on & on. All long-vanished now. The wonders & greatness of Western Civilization are never mentioned or presented anymore, as its under assault & attack, with the cultural-controllers of our era criticizing, when referred to at all, & dismissing it. All I can say is, thank goodness for Lucy Worsley & the BBC, though the latter's changing, too, I've noticed.
In more recent biographies it's said that the young man who apprenticed under Michelangelo was actually who the poetry was written for -- his homosexuality was not accepted until recently.
You mean, placed onto him.
Every time I look at the work of Michelangelo I get inspired !
Great montage !!!!! Bravo !!
Alexander Scourby ,the perfect voice to tell the story.
An eye opening Documentary 👍

Great resource. It would be useful a division into sections.
I think it's sad how somber Mary is in all the carvings .
Good work
The Narrator For Michelangelo Documentary Is The Same Voice For His Voice Of luke In The Jesus Film (1979)
I miss the smoker's voice so prevelant at that time. Filthy habit, but great for reporting and narration.

Interesting for the historical context, but I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of his work as brilliant as it undoubtedly is.
