- The Mill and the Cross is a 2011 drama film directed by Lech Majewski and starring Rutger Hauer, Charlotte Rampling and Michael York. It is inspired by Pieter Bruegel the Elder's 1564 painting The Way to Calvary, and based on Michael Francis Gibson's book The Mill and the Cross. The film was a Polish-Swedish co-production. Filming on the project wrapped in August 2009. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 23, 2011.
Rest in Peace Mr. Hauer... this film was the perfect example of how you could, and did, take on virtually any kind of role... Such curiosity and lack of vanity...
The cinematography really captures Bruegel's style.

SPELLBINDING! This film is a feast to the eyes and water to your soul!
I admit it, if you only watch Box Office kinda movies, you will be bored by the minimal dialogue.
But if you love history, know the painting, and the Christ's crucifixion story well, you will definitely be mesmerized.
This film is for people who love Girl With A Peal Earring or The Hours!
People who admit that they are bored or that things are boring..are usually boring people..

I don't know if there's any. But try to search google for Józef Skrzek (legendary SBB frontman) music for "The Mill & The Cross". Maybe you'll find something.

There are some great scenes but most of the time the operator seems to pick very bad random angles which is inacceptabile in this movie since the main idea of this film was to make each frame worthy of a real painting. The operator lacks compositional thinking.
