I feel like this movie was way ahead of its time. I remember watching this in cinema with friends. People wanted a movie like the Matrix since it was from the writers and directors of it. People left disappointed, but my friends and I felt it was one of the best films we had ever seen. It was probably one of the best films of that year. If it were released in these next two years, it would be labeled as a cinematic masterpiece. It was released at the wrong time, and a lot of people just did not get it

I regretted not seeing it in theaters. Heard all the bad publicity of the film and did not watch it think it would be a 3 hour slog of a film. Instead watching it on an Amtrak ride home. Now one of my favorite movies of all time.
I think this was the film that got me to mistrust critics and the word of others. How can such a masterpiece of a film that touches on the very fabric of the human experience be so derided by so many?
I'm usually pretty stoic when it comes to films but I felt every possible emotion through all the nuances these characters go through. The very challenges we all face and the existential crises that questions our very being are such a core element of the story threads.
In the end it doesn't answer any questions, but puts a spin of beauty into the very question of our meaning.

Never before has the phrase, *"criminally underrated"* been so applicable. This is a movie made for no other reason than telling a story. It wasn't made as a cash cow (it only made around 10% of it's budget back as worldwide profits), it wasn't run by Hollywood executives to ensure that it was "safe" before being greenlighted, it wasn't Oscar bait (though that the Oscars seemed to miss it entirely is a travesty); It was made as an insanely brave attempt at storytelling, and for those who look for it, the story is magnificent. The best metaphor I can think of it that this movie is like an intricate ornament, that as you turn it and inspect it from new angles, new details and fascinations become apparent. Everyone involved, the directors, the actors, the extras, the special effects designers, the costume designers, set designers, CGI artists, and of course the make up artists, poured everything they had into this film. This being the internet, I'm pretty sure I'll get insulted for saying this, but this movie is one of the most brilliant cinematic pieces of art ever made.

You made the best comment I've ever heard about this movie. For me, Cloud Atlas is a jewel, full of pure beauty and magnificence. What happens is that there are at least three "layers"... the surface (a romantic-action movie), the part beneath the surface (when you see the connections) and the heart, when you see what all the connections mean and realize that the faces don't matter. It's exquisite.

Dude you really want brave storytelling? Read the book! Two things happened: those who read the book didn't like the movie because there just wasn't enough time for such a long and complex story. And two, those who didn't read the book first got so confused that they didn't understand what went on the entire time. So again, if you really want brave, incredible story telling.... pick up the book.
Oh and by the way, having read the book more than three times before the film came out, I give the movie an honest and generous C+.. Yeah go on hate on me now.

This charming man Having worked at a Hospice with people who were greiving the death of someone, I can tell you that what screws up a person is having a strong emotion and hiding it from others and oneself. There are few upsides to doing that-mainly acceptance from others who don't want to see any "negative" emotions. The downsides, which are many, is that people stop expereincing their lives and become profoundly depressed. They don't cry and they don't laugh. Their emotions become muted because many people tell them "its gay" to feel a certain way. The ones that do better are the ones that cry. THEN they start to laugh also. Its not that they shut down their sadness, they shut down their feelings. You and I CAN'T shut down a single emotion-they either all shut down or they all FLOW. The STRONG people are the ones that accept their emotions-the weak are the ones that devote energy to clamping down their sadness or drink alcohol until they don't feel. That's a waste for all involved.

If anyone is confused. there are 6 timelines. Slave-trade times, early 1900s, 1970s, present day, far into the future, even further into the future. they are linked like this:
In slave-trade times, the guy writes a journal.
They guy from the early 1900s writes letters to his lover about reading the journal.
the girl in the 1970s (louisa ray), reads the letters and solves this case (shes a detective)
in the present day, they make a movie about the case
in the far future, Somni 451 (i think thats her name - the asian girl), watches the film, and along with her previous entrapment, is inspired to force a revolution.
In the far far future the words of Somni 451 are worshipped

    • @RyannBarton
      @RyannBarton 9 лет назад +60

Tʜᴇ Gᴀᴍᴇ Cʜᴀɴɢᴇʀ I'm pretty sure they didn't make a movie about the case. The present day was about Timothy Cavendish being in the nursing home. He read the novel about the Louisa Ray case and then Cavendish wrote a screen play about his adventures which Somni 451 then watched in the year 2144.

    • @andrewroncallo1336

+Jonas Hagh Petersen I think that was his redemption for his past life. I mean no matter what role Tom Hanks played, his character was always a thief or a person you had to pay off. There was only ever one time he tried to do good, but he died before he could do so, and even that character was bad to an extent. He knew what his boss was planning, and wasn't going to say anything, it was Halle's character Louisa that convinced him. You see in the final timeline, that Zachary was a bit of a coward, and a bit off in the head. I feel that the cannibal teeth, and him having to deal with cannibals at the end to be somewhat ironic, and a payment long over do.

"Ask... M-me w... Why I like... Cloud Atlas so much."
Perplexed, Akaashi directed his full attention to Bokuto.
"Well alright... Koutarou, why do you like Cloud Atlas so much?" He watched Bokuto intently, curious to know what his answer would be.
Looking up at Akaashi with eager eyes, as if he'd been asked the question out of his own free will, Bokuto gladly answered.
"S... So you... Know in the m-movie when... Th... Characters die in one life...?" He kept his weary yellow eyes on Akaashi, waiting for him to nod. Once he did, Bokuto continued. "W-well... I... Like it when... Th-they find each other again... In another life."
Bokuto's voice was soft, measly, and carried no force to it. But as he spoke about his favorite scene, Akaashi could sense a powerful vibe coming from him... One that wasn't there before.

Then the movie came out and I watched it, and I didn’t even notice it was 3 hours long. And then I watched it three more times in the theatre. I took my mom. I took my best friend. I took my sister to watch it with me. I am in love with this movie. This is and will be my favorite movie of all times. Hands down. An amazing work of art.

I read there's a 4-hour directors' cut that only a few people have seen. I wish they would release it. I'd pay Broadway ticket prices to see it in a theatre. I saw the film, then read the book, then rewatched the movie. It really amazed me how they were able to take such a complex piece of literature and make a different kind of masterpiece (structurally) on film. It was over the head of most people, I suppose, but there is a club here of those who get it.

I watched it 6 times, 3 in theater. I've never seen anything like it, it gives you a sense of belonging into something bigger than life, that whatever you do, or don't do matters in that big scheme of things to happen or not happening. It gives you the notion that you are here for a reason, actions, feelings of your ancestors resulted in you. Therefore you have a responsibility with that big scheme, a responsibility with the future. Such a good movie, I can't even classify it . Thank you all, the writer, actors, producers, director etc that were bold enough to put this film together, you have made a difference in that big scheme of things, I'm sure of it... ;) for all of those who don't like the movie, surely there will be more superheros movies in the near future so don't worry about it. But give this one movie a chance, don't try to understand everything on it, as art, the interpretation must be made in your soul, even tough you could never could grasp it 100 percent you will know you felt the message(s) of it. Peace

I've watched it a handful of times now,and each subsequent viewing shows me something else I missed or didn't notice before- even if only a subtle thing. It is absolutely amazing, and unfortunately a lot of people didn't get it. If you've only seen it once and didn't understand it, watch it again. Then watch it again after that. i'm not really sure why a common criticism i've encountered is that the plot is confusing, i can imagine it would be if you were to just go in and watch the movie passively without paying close attention, but surely people (and especially critics) should know better than to approach cinema this way
i think the movie is seriously flawed but undeniably ambitious and mostly a successful adaptation, considering the complexity of the source material. but i doubt that it will ever be critically reappraised, even if its weaknesses are overall outweighed by its strengths
the novel though is phenomenally good. it's one of the very best books i've ever read and, if there's any justice in the world, it'll go down as one of the greatest novels of the early twenty-first century, imo

If you're somebody who would rather watch some intense action sci-fi film rather than a philosophical complex film, then this probably isn't for you. coldwynn The new star trek movie hasn't come out yet. I think you might be confusing it with the new star wars movie.
Also, people either love or hated Cloud Atlas. I loved it. The people that don't like it just don't follow along with the multiple story lines and how they connect together. It takes multiple watches to see how everything is connected. The trailer is on point with what the movie is about... but some people just don't see the connectedness of the past present and future of all lives throughout history which is what the movie tries to show. Its a very poetic movie and that tends to not sit well with the mass audiences that are just use to the simple linear plot lines.

+Kali Lúthien i don't think any movie has made me think so much about spirituality as this one. and the twisted plot and debatable aesthetic choices fall secondary because i feel all the stories are just an excuse to make a 3 hour example of the spiritual philosophy behind the film. more than the stories, to me the intense magic of the film lies on super small moments, for example when tom hanks as a violent writer sees halle berry in the book party and they look at each other for a split second with a look of "do i know that person?". that detail alone, and how perfectly subtle it is makes the film for me.

This is seriously one of the greatest films in the history of filmmaking. I have watched it for the second time last night. It's simply perfection, a new way of storytelling involving several plots to solve one greater plot. In years to come, this piece of art will be remembered along with all time classics, like Melies' Voyage to the Moon, Citizen Kane, Psycho and A Space Odissey, to name some.

    • @talia_al_gabagool
      @talia_al_gabagool 9 лет назад +5

The sad thing is it wont. It will be "forgotton" by the masses but remembered by the good lucky few to see it. Thats what makes this art so beautiful art mimics reality. Its an unfortunate circumstance. Ive seen this film 8 times. In full. Loved it everytime. Shown my friends and theyve how fantastic it truly is.

    • @abrannan
      @abrannan 9 лет назад +4

***** I don't know that it won't. With video/dvd/etc making "older" films easier to access, and word of mouth being easier to spread via the internet, there are films that flopped in the theaters but found new appreciation and new life long after their theatrical release. Donnie Darko, Office Space, The Shawshank Redemption, The Big Lebowski, Dazed and Confused, to name a few. I've seen a lot of positive mentions of this film lately, enough to drive me here to re-watch the trailer. I just don't think the book is closed on this film yet.
Remember, Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, and It's a Wonderful Life were all considered box-office flops in their day.

At one point in his dream, Akaashi looked out the window. The night sky had suddenly become a pale blue, and the warm orange glow of the sun slowly spread across the horizon. He turned his head slowly to look at Bokuto, and watched him as he lay in his arms. Akaashi said his name, and to this, Bokuto stirred awake. He turned his head and met Akaashi's gaze with weary, well rested eyes. He stretched and stifled a yawn, pushed a hand through the mess that was his hair, and relaxed his head against Akaashi's shoulder.
Sunlight broke into the room, cascading all along the walls and floor, and casting shadows all around. It lit Bokuto's face up just enough for Akaashi to take in those healthy features that were staring back at him. He felt his heart rate accelerate, and his throat tightened as his vision blurred. Bokuto beamed at him with a smile that spoke a thousand words, and his hand reached out to touch Akaashi's cheek. Akaashi felt his palm- warm, full, caressing the round of his face. He leaned into his touch, and his vision began to fade, his eyes welling with tears.
Bokuto leaned in and touched his forehead to Akaashi's. He was only a blurred shape now, but Akaashi knew he was still there. Bokuto spoke, his voice peaceful. Healthy. Whole.
    "I found you."
A trembling, tender laugh escaped Akaashi. He smiled.
    "You found me."

For anyone who might see this in 2023, this is one of the best written stories ever... it's like poetry with how it's written & the movie is so engaging. It does require focus so you can't leave or you'd get lost, but thats part of what makes it so good. Most movies are boring & predictable, but this movie really keeps your mind engaged & keeps a steady pace. It never dulls down or has any inconsistent speeds. They also use the same actors for each reincarnation/time period so it adds an extra layer of magic to it... and don't get me started on the acting. Every actor in this movie did so well with their roles.
    It's just a beautiful movie/concept & I highly recommend watching it.

The fact that this trailer has been viewed 21 million times gives me a sense of comfort and assurance that there is some hope for the future of humanity. This was/is a great movie that merits being Seen more than once...and once again.
It's encouraging to know that there are others who share the will and the capacity to appreciate the significance of this lovely work! If we humans manage to avoid extinction it will be, in great measure, because we will have raised our individual and collective consciousness so that we can See our past and future lovingly contained in a joyful Now!

The last movie I saw with you. I remember being so confused. I remember watching this trailer over and over together. I hope you're doing well. I still dream of you even after all this time. I hope we meet again in this or our next life. I won't make the same mistake. You are the love of my life.

Write them a letter and send it snail mail. You’re good with words. Buy a card and decent stationary. Then you can keep it short and sweet. Getting a personal card in the mail is unusual & wonderful. Love letters are a dying art.

To all the people who get put off by the past lives new-age concept, I don't even know how you missed the real point of what they're trying to show you here, so I will explain it right now. Here we go: Tom Hanks went from a murderous doctor, to a pleasant scientist, to a murderous author, a coward, and then a noble champion who fought to protect what he believed in. The whole point of this is to illustrate how our choices affect our lives, that you can choose to be good or choose to be bad. The movie isn't so much about reincarnation as it is about what I just said. Have you never thought to yourselves who you'd be if you were born a 1000 years ago, or 100, or 500 years in the future? Well, this movie shows you a few of the countless possibilities. To summarize: Cloud Atlas is an elaborate fairy tail that explores the ideas behind choice and are you really who you could be?

No, the point is that if you have power = money you can either save a slaves life or murder ppl because you are bored... easy to understand... no need for a long explanation.

      Great story. Excellent concept.
Gives meaning to the consequences of your actions.
I especially enjoyed the vivid colours.
It was cleverly done. At the start it really confused me. But ever so elegantly, it unravelled the confusion.

@Divergent Integral I don't really agree. I'm a big fan of pop music, and blockbusters. The first time I saw Cloud Atlas, I didn't get everything, as I'm used to easy movies. But I already knew I loved it for other reasons. It is watching it many more times and reading about it that made me understand the greatness of it.
I think it's more a question of curiosity and emotions than it is about smartness.

It's not the movie itself that is a masterpiece it's the message behind it. The movie is great no doubt, the soundtrack incredible. I did not love the story until I watched the movie. But credit is due to the writer of the this novel, David Mitchell. Not the movie, despite it being awesome!
