- The new restoration of Andrei Tarkovsky's Mirror is now playing in Film at Lincoln Center's NYC theaters and our Virtual Cinema. Get tickets: filmlinc.org/mirror/
Andrei Tarkovsky’s fourth feature is perhaps the great director’s most personal and evocative work. It traverses three generations of a poet’s family in 20th-century Russia; his relationships with his wife, mother, and children and the society around him coalesce through events connected only by the interior logic of the poetic subconscious, yielding associations that both mystify and enthrall. Unified by Georgi Rerberg’s delicate lensing, Mirror employs radical shifts in both texture and color, abstracting the elemental minutiae of everyday life (like waves of air spreading across a field, or spilled milk pooling on a table) to conjure the nostalgic sensations of memory and an enigmatic feeling of being outside space and time. A Janus Films release.

It took three separate viewings at three very different periods of my life, my 20's then 40's and now finally mid 60's to totally and completely understand The Mirror. I've seen all Tarkovsky's films, many multiple times, but its this masterpiece and the equally complex Stalker that touched me in a way that the medium of cinema should, but almost never does. Stunning film making.
Didn't watch it yet, but it would be interesting to hear your take on it, since you say you only understood it now
thank you
Watched it as an enthusiastic film school student in my 20s. Tried to re watch it twice but always having this feeling of “fatigue”, sort of a spiritual one. Today, at 33, after talking with the a friend about Tarkovsky and Kieslowsky, I’ve decide to watch it again after 7-8 years. Let’s see if a find something new like you…
Are you a good person? Not by your own standards, but by God’s, your Creator and Judge. No one is. Repent, confess your sins to God and believe in Christ. Only then will you be justified, at peace with God, free from hell, and you'll live for His glory: ruclips.net/video/pYZw0dfLmLk/видео.html

I don't know of any other film that is more dream like in nature than Tarkovsky's The Mirror. Watching it genuinely feels like a dream.
Is it horror tho?
@@dddila A dream doesn't have to be a nightmare. The Mirror is not horror, it feels like a benign if slightly pleasant dream.
A good film for fall. The chill is in the air now, and to come to grips with that fact we need to escape sometimes into a film, or perhaps a dreamlike trance.
Eraserhead
While I truly liked Andrei Rublev and Stalker the Mirror flought over my head completely. But now as I got to know a bit more about Orthodoxy and spent some time with Dostoevsky maybe I will try it again later but I don't have many hopes.
The problem is in our western and central european countries materialism and consumption made a lot of us indifferent to the realism of Tarkovsky especially when it comes with a lot of spiritual message by using symbols plus poetry and other artistic ideas.
Considering the fact that Criterion has previously released most of Tarkovsky’s Soviet films, as well as last year’s release of Come and See, it is genuinely shocking that Criterion has not released this masterpiece on Blu-ray. If any film deserves the Criterion treatment, it’s this one!
If Janus did the restoration, it means a Criterion is soon coming.
@@AngelofMusic04 I know that! I’m just surprised it took so long, especially all of Tarkovsky’s other films have been released on Blu-Ray already
@@AngelofMusic04 The restoration is done by Mosfilm like all the previous Tarkovsky films. Janus only distributes it in US. And every time Janus tours anything, It is usually followed by a Criterion home release. So Mirror by Criterion is pretty much confirmed.
It's all about the distribution rights, baby!
@@AmirSadeghi-nk3ib Is this the same restoration that was released by Curzon/Artificial Eye on Blu-Ray in 2016 for PAL regions?
This trailer gave me goosebumps.
The ONLY trailer that captures the mood of this masterpiece properly. Does anyone else remember the nuke scene?
I’ve seen this movie about 5 maybe 6 times now. What are you talking about when you say “nuke scene”?
@@ianbeach23 It happens very fast:)
@@ianbeach23 Probably the historical footage
You're probably thinking of The Sacrifice?
@@pdzombie1906 I just watched it there is nuke footage in the movie
Best film shot ever(and the sequence before)... 1:00 I always say this, unique emotional, irrational beauty, and soul!
Nolan mentioned this movie as one of the inspiration for Oppenheimer.
Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema had introduced me to Mirror prior to making Interstellar. Other than the fact that it’s a great masterpiece, we found it very useful for looking at the use of elements and the use of textures. Mirror is an incredibly rich visual tapestry, but also one in which elements are allowed to breathe in symbolic ways.”
I’m kind of surprised Nolan didn’t knew The Mirror before his DP showed it to him. He’s a good “out of the box” Hollywood director, so I was expecting him to already know it? Anyways, the more you know…
It I would dare to say that only one film in history has real soul, this is it. You can feel it, but can't explain it.
Please give this masterpiece the Criterion Blu-ray release it deserves!
i’ve got good news!
@@Tylerlyndon I already bought it! 😁
A Criterion Tarkovsky Box Set, should be coming in the Near Future!
The cinematography in Andrei Tarkovsky's films are just GOLD.
Males me cry from happiness! Such a masterpiece ❤️❤️❤️
This is one of the most beautiful films I seen in all my life! it's brilliant, genius, fab.
pretty much like you, you gorgeous handsome man 😍🥰
0:23 absolute beauty
Mirror is a compilation of beautiful scenes that held great meaning for Tarkovsky. I got more out of Solaris and Andrei Rublev, but friends whose opinions I respect prefer Mirror because it is a naked personal statement by a great director.
Jesus this movie looks freaking beautiful
Afs in Austin is playing this in July. I'll be there for sure. I've seen Andrei Rublev, Solaris, and Stalker there already. If you get the chance, it's worth it to see Tarkovsky on the big screen.
I just watched Criterion's blu ray a couple of nights ago which was my first time seeing it, & it still lingers on my mind. Great film.
should i watch the film high or sober?
People say @1:00 is a great shot. But the shot at @0:15 is something I might remember as the last thought when I die. There is something special in that scene I cant explain, or forget, when the movie name Mirror is uttered
A true masterpiece
Una de las películas mas bellas de la historia.
i will never watch a tarkovsky film. because i dont want the my imagination about how fantastical and connective his films are to be reduced.
Looks amazing
Capolavoro.
Pura poesia.
I SEE the Witch and the ring took many influences from Tarkovsky
This trailer is confusing but hauntingly beautiful, just like the movie…though apparently, from what I heard, Soviet censors were just as weirded out and confused by this movie as everyone else was.
un très beau film
Some films are meant to be seen and felt not understood or explained. Mirror is the epitome of subjectivity.
Plz make Nostalgia one!
en Tarkovsky el viento tene vida, como todo en el mundo
had to watch this in 240p, if only this quality version was widely available
It's on youtube
Hello, can I take part of the virtual screening even if i live in europe?
Interesting..i can see Japanese horror film "ringu" had a lot of visual influence from Mirror.
I am not disagreeing but would you care to elaborate?
@@xxx_donvanvliet_xxx I haven't seen Mirror and I saw Ringu such a long time ago. However Ringu for me was so shocking so I do remember well. I guess it is both visual and audio. Just the slowness and eeriness of it all. The wet hair, the mirror scene, and the man standing in the field, etc. These surreal images are all referenced in Ringu esp in the 'video taped part'.
'Ringu', the novel and films are based upon two M. R. James ghost stories: 'The Mezzotint' (recently made as a short horror film for Christmas in Britain), and 'St Martin's Close' which was made as a short film in Britain for last Christmas.
The stories are closer to 'Ringu'.
It has influenced several horror films in Korea (The Ring Virus), the US (The Ring) and other places, as well as a Madonna music video ('if I could melt your heart?')
I expect many film-makers have been influenced by 'Zerkalo' / Mirror, notably the way Michael Mann interjects short shots of slow-motion breakage of windows and doors. Like Tarkovsky's bird in this trailer, for example.
But then Sam Peckinpah did that earlier as well.
thats 100% true. The Exorcist as well.
@@tommygeebeatzthe exorcist was before mirror

Criterion Collection?
fuck yeah its probably coming
This is Janus Films' trailer. That answer is a resounding YES! Give it 1-2 months or earlier when the Collection will announce it. I guarantee that!
amazing trailer btw!
Just watched Willem Dafoe's criterion picks, and he references Mirror in relation to Lars Von Trier's Antichrist. Watching this trailer it's so apparent that the cinematography/imagery heavily inspired that film.
Oh man. Lars and his relation with Tarkovsky cinema is such a roller coaster. He loved him so much, he decided to go against everything Tarkovsky believed about nature.
I saw that everything Criterion is 50% off right now so I bought Stalker and Solaris. Really tempted to buy this too to round out my little Tarkovsky collection but idk what do you guys think? I try to only buy blurays (and especially Criterion blurays) that are visually sumptuous and good for multiple rewatches so if anyone's got any recommendations let me know
Absolutely do it. It’s as good as as Stalker, maybe even better.
@@flyingneedle got it! Loved it! Gosh tho some of those shot compositions just make your heart sing. I actually returned Solaris before seeing it though. A little Tarkovsky goes a long way..
Does anybody know what’s the opera song called?
It is Bach's Johannes Passion chorus
I thought Sadako was coming out of the TV!!!
Not available in Mexico :c

I've never watched a film through Lincoln Center before. Is there an App or anything? What is the best way to watch it for those who haven't streamed from them before? I'd prefer to not have to watch on a computer.
Finally taking the time to go through Tarkovsky's work. Just watched Solaris last week so this is perfect timing for me.
Hi! You can stream to your TV via Airplay, Chromecast or HDMI. See more details in our FAQ: virtual.filmlinc.org/page/faq/
@@filmlinc hey, I created an account but no movie is available. Is it because of the schedule or because they are only available in the US ? (I'm in France)
@@swann357 Yes, that is exactly why - only available in the US
@@kimmllersvendsen8514 damn too bad

i remember watching this with my partner several years back late at night and we basically took turns bursting into tears at different parts of the movie and had trouble explaining why. last time i sat down to watch it recently i ended up crawling around on the floor making horrible noises. good film

I loved the first third of this movie but I would be lying if I said I didn't get pretty bored during the rest of it. There are a few moments sprinkled about but nothing more in my opinion.

I don't like this trailer. To me it implies that it is almost a horror film or that it gets sinister or something.
There's definitely something off about the visuals.
You mean you don’t like the restoration?
@@OttoIncandenza Exactly, they seem weirdly oversharpened.
To be honest…. I can’t really understand this film….
Depends on what kind of childhood you had
That's ok. I didn't really understand Solaris, which is a favorite of many, but this film (Mirror) really resonated with me
I think that some films are meant to be felt rather than understood
Looks like one of Netflix originals
Identical
*visible confusion*
Are you OK?
Omg no
American multiplex mall rat: Duh, is this one from DC or the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Looks kinda slow. Where's the CGI?
I don't think so
I myself enjoy both arthouse indies and superhero movies
Meanwhile Tarkovsky's or bresson's movies might not appeal to casual audience who see movies as a source of entertainment
They don't deserve to be called a mall rat
Your comment reeks of hyper elitism and pretentiousness
