  • Andrew and Steve are back for a mailbag episode that covers everything from Andrew's wedding audio mistakes to why we use condenser mics for RUclips. People are used to seeing dynamic mics for podcasts and RUclips studios but we explain how we get great audio from the S-Mic 2S, how to get good sound in an untreated room, and much more.
Not sure about audio roles on set? Where your role as a mixer ends and where post begins? We tackle this tricky topic with some suggestions on how to prevent future problems in audio workflow. No longer will you have miscommunications on set.
This episode also covers the HD-TX: how to use it for better interview audio, and how to use it to get wireless audio on set. Whether you use it as a part of your Deity Connect wireless system or as a standalone tool, it's a powerful piece of gear that will make your audio kit better!

How the HD-TX could have saved me!!
2 weeks ago I got a vox pox type interview with a speaker after a well-received presentation. The aim was to get her to do a 30-second recap and to use it as a promo on social media to get more views on the longer-form video. My camera -Canon M50- doesn’t have audio out so it is difficult to really be sure you are getting good levels. I checked the information screen and saw the metres moving up and down when I did the audio check, but to my great horror, in the edit found out that I had only been getting audio from the built-in camera mic. I had no redundancy like you guys said in your Better Interview Audio | How to Mic Up 2 People With Booms and Lavs so you are covered and in post choose the best audio. ruclips.net/video/eQFMnN0kCM4/видео.html
Now that could have been avoided with great gear like the HD-TX which can transmit wirelessly and record locally but the HD-TX unit goes beyond that as it has a headphone out so you can check levels as well, so wireless, local records and headphone monitoring is a trifecta of features to help save an interview!

My friend was doing sound for me on a short film (also had another guy to help out with the booming etc).. thanks to serious budget constrains (plus Deity mics aren't available in India easily, sadly), we had a Zoom H1 and a H1N in the pocket of the actors. In post, I realized -
      A. There were audio files that ran on for almost an hour and a half
      B. The mic got disconnected between takes, and the sound guy had no idea
Luckily we were also booming the actors, but that had its own complications. Ended up dubbing half the film, eventually.
      Lessons learnt -
      A. Keep the setup simple (Now working with three Rode Wireless Mics, and a S Mic 2 all plugged into a Zoom F4). The H1 and H1N are around for Foley and as backups in case we need to lav more people, but not relying on them for the primary audio source without monitoring them (my main recorder was a Zoom H4N with a preamp for the mic)
      B. Monitoring audio cannot be compromised
By the way, you should really think about promoting the Deity mics and setups in India. We need the quality and reliability of your kits. Got my S Mic 2 through a friend coming in from US. It was a pain to obtain it, but worth the effort

A long time ago, recording an event (a Quince) with an old Sony PD-170 (Mini DV era...), I had the boom mic with the wrong settings (and no backup audio at all...) and taped an important part of the event winth no sound. What I learned? Always, I mean ALWAYS, double check the audio settings of the camera and always have a secondary source of audio (the so called "backup"). Thanks a lot for this helpful videos! Salutes from Argentina!

Great question from Charlie and I agree - ok to adjust the fader on the mix, best not to mess with trim on the iso channels.
My biggest f-up was to leave my lavalier hiding kit (tape, mole skin, etc.) at home. Since then, I created a packing checklist I run through before I leave home for a shoot. Haven't forgotten anything since then.

Barely any question for now, none actually. All I can say is your gear is really great... one dream function, it's there... one clever feature, it's there. So, what can we ask for ?
    Mistakes ? Yes.
On my 3 months tour doing interviews of blood-sick persons, we finally got an approval to meet a reference Professor who's considered *the* specialist of NPH and aplasia. The guy is so tight on schedule, that was our only chance for some 6 months (in one hour he gets from 15 up to 25 phone calls, on "normal" days). Their phone call arrived during breakfast, for an 11:00AM meeting... as a total surprise, because we thought the OK would never occur (canceled three times). We had to wrap up the tea-cup break, pack the stuff, scroll the train schedule, etc. I had to check all the gear (only one in charge, my team-mate was busy with her part) and make sure I had everything verified, which I did. Well... I thought I did.
Arriving on location (the Hopital Saint Louis, in Paris) we were told the interview could be filmed outside (post-treatment garden was opened) or inside (but not in the actual medical departement, for obvious reasons). Inside was chosen, too noisy outside, and we headed to the historical building where a whole room was reserved for us : vast XIXth century cubic place, with high ceeling, flat walls, numerous tiny windows, about 25 pillars, etc. your typical ancient room, with acoustics perfect for natural voice resonance, but awful for amplified sound be it music or voice. That kind of place where you get a headache after a mere hour of conference because sound spins and swirl around, making you dizzy for a whole day.
I unpacked, set my lights and reflectors, then my tripod and camera... and couldn't find my microphone case ! Forgotten because of the rush we were in when receiving the OK call. I was desperate, with no way out. Image quality is great, interview was so rich and captivating... sound is such a piece of crap, because recorded with the camera's microphones. I still blame myself today. There probably is some 2 or 3/10th second reverberation in the room, as it was completely empty.
Now, a "MICRO" label shows in two places of my camera bag... and it never happened since. 😂

I want to join in on the fail stories... I went to record a RUclips video back when I had under 200 subscribers and was putting out a video every 3 days trying to get picked up by the algorithm. I was extremely tired because I had just worked a 14 hour day on The Walking Dead and was trying so hard to get motivated. Finally I hit record on my webcam (which is what I recorded on in the early days of Sound Speeds) and on my MixPre-6. Fought exhaustion and nonstop stutters but managed to finish recording in 1 hr 45 minutes. I was so happy to be done and looked down at the computer, hit stop on the webcam recording and then went to my MixPre-6 and saw that when I thought I hit record, I must have hit stop instead because nothing recorded. The webcam software was set to record the audio from my MixPre-6 (what I thought was a failsafe) but all I had was buzz. Crushed and so mad... I was energized and recorded the video again right then and there. 1 hr 30 minutes later I was done and had to be up in 1 hour 20 minutes for another 14 hour day.

Hey guys! I had some issues where the D3 wasn't auto turning off when connected to my Fuji xt3. I think I read somewhere that might be a compatibility issue with the Fuji system and I might need an adapter?
I really like what you guys are doing and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I returned it but was reconsidering the d3 pro, but again, I wanted to make sure I could get things to work instead of worry about the battery during a wedding day shoot.

A couple questions, are there any different sorts of techniques that you use when you are booming for films and there is a lot of action or movement? Do I need to record Room Tone in every single place if later they will probably remove all the background noise in post? I've heard you talk about the use of HPFs on your field recorder since it sometimes helps the preamps work better, what about the use of in-built Compressors or Limiters, should we try to get the best gain level and use limiters just in case or better to leave good enough headroom and then process in post?

Well, my biggest f-up, was a wedding where the bilingual church has a really good audio guy and yamaha digital sound board and system. During the rehearsal, he did an excellent job at managing feedbacks, control gains, mute/unmute tracks. For weddings, I usually record the church mix directly into my recorder and use that in conjunction with my lavs and camera shotgun audio. That time, he offered to save my hassle and give me the mixed audio file directly from his digital board and I happily accepted it (they don't usually record each track separately, and I don't want to remix everything neither). This is where the f-up happened: on the wedding day, they had real time translation audio being wireless transmitted to attendees who do not speak English using headsets. This real time translation track was not audible in the hall speakers, but it was audible in the final recorded file. So I got a professionally well mixed audio file with perfect levels, and overlay real time translation. Had to rely on my lav tracks for that wedding. Honestly I don't know how to prevent his from happening again except maybe record from the monitor out?

    • @Prataz
      @Prataz 4 года назад +1

I think he must had sent you all the tracks via one of the omni outs. It's quite common mistake as it's just a touch of a button on the mixer to check all and send all. In the future, it 's good to check the channels that is sent out to you with the house engineer and remove those you don't need.
