5:55 "never had one issue yet." You are VERY lucky, lol. I usually go through the speaker as well but sometimes that's not an option. Love the velcro hack. I'm totally making one of those today! Thanks for the video!
This is how I've done it for audio too with the field recorders. I bring all the cables too. I've been really impressed with the Tascam DR10sc I bought from Amazon UK. It works great for recording dual tracks from a lav as well as send an out to a wireless system. Works fantastic but some wireless systems are bulky. But it's nice to have 2 sources recording audio as well as dual tracks. Great advice as always. Thanks for sharing.
very informative instruction. I always put an additional small recorder on the mic too. DJs' system sometimes cause problems such as wireless mic signal instability and not reliable. Like your way of hosting this video.
Good to see you guys are still going strong in the Wedding game. I was going through my equipment contemplating whether to resell it or not. I thought about checking your guys channel to check for any updates and sort of makes me want to keep it for my own sake of shooting just family events, etc... My business unfortunately never took off but I definitely tried to take your guys perspective of shooting weddings and make it my own style with basically an identical setup. Anyways, just wanted to give my kind words and hope all is well with you guys!
When splitting the signal in with the Y cable... does it record separate L&R tracks? Just wondering how would you chose between the side that didn’t peak. The Velcro hack... money! Already used it a couple time this last season! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
in fcpx, I just click on the file in the timeline and in the inspector window, I change the track from Stereo to Dual Mono. Then I just select either the L or R track that has the best signal and deselect the other side of the track :)
I also like to get backup audio just in case my primary fails. I'll use a tascam dr10L lav mic and tape it to the front speaker grill using a rycote stickie. It's way better than using camera audio if your primary fails.
I usually mount my recorder to a Gorillapod and wrap the legs around the speaker stand- if no direct inputs available from DJ, I just point the recorder up towards the speaker or tape a lav mic to the speaker.
So much good info here, thank you! Also, I think my favorite tip was the 1/4-20 velcro strap. That's going to look so much cleaner than my usual gaff wrap job.
Awesome! I have been thinking about changing out my zoom h4n for a while. I will look into this. I like that much better than trying to mic everyone giving toasts
This is so genius.. I need to get an xlr splitter asap. So you trust the DJ that much? I've had so many issues with DJ audio that I started putting lapels on everyone as a backup. Probably overkill 🤷🏻♂️
@@mitchmedmedia5386 since I have a background and degree in audio, I can troubleshoot almost any issue. It's not that I completely trust the dj, but as we are starting to film more higher end weddings, the budgets are hiring great dj's which makes it much more reliable. in the case where I don't get a good signal from the dj, I will lav up each presenter just in case so I still have good audio. so never trust a dj, and always have a backup plan ;)
Great video, love the Y cable hack. Thanks for sharing this. But I have a question: in DR-44WL, I cannot find a way to record channels 3 and 4 as individual mono channels and get dual recording for each channel at the same time. So, when you use the Y cable, you record one stereo file (with channels 3 and 4 as Left/Right) and another stereo file with channels at lower level? And split them back to individual mono channels in post production?
yep that's correct. when you enable dual recording in the settings, it should set that for whatever tracks you are recording. maybe check the settings for mono recording vs stereo. Not sure where that setting may be as I never had to adjust something like that. Just clicked both 3 and 4 at the same time to record both inputs at the same time.
With the way they've done it with the Y cable they're recording the same mono signal twice, they've simply set the mixer so one input has less gain (i.e. it acts as the safety track in the event of clipping) But I would have thought they could have got the same result by just plugging in one cable into 1 the XLR port and just have the recorder do a safety track where it automatically records a backup track at a lower gain
Do you ever use on-camera mics or shotgun mics for ambient stuff or suprise situations where you could not put a lav on someone? I have never done this myself but am considering it.
Great video! I just got the same recorder awhile back. I was wondering if you mess with the send and return options? I'm not sure what those are for? Also great time on the screw velcro...I ended up ordering a clip thing that is made for the zoom to wear but going to add that tip for when I'm not wearing it. Great tip on the "level" glitch on the input knob. THANK YOU!
@@susannalluch7663 Its prolly not the best unit versus some of the newer ones made recently. But I got it for dirt cheap. I'm using it to interview client and make videos at the shop. Can set the built in mic levels for me conducting the interview and then have my rode go mic on the input for the people I'm interviewing. Does a really nice job.
It all depends but I usually set it to Line level and set input 3 to 24 and then input 4 to around 6 as a starting point. It's so subjective though to the signal coming into the recorder that is always changes.
Hi there. After watching your video on how to get 4 audio tracks with a single XLR input, I bought the recorder and the cable. I have configured the recorder in 4CHL and in DUAL mode but when recording it only generates 2 tracks with the extension 34 and D34. How do you generate those 4 tracks just using Tascam inputs 3 and 4? Thanks.
You get access to "4" tracks because of the individual Left and Right channels from the one audio source are different volume levels. So technically its 2 audio tracks, but 4 options. What I do for instance is take Track 1 (which has say a volume of -2db in the Left Channel and volume -14db in the Right Chanel) and click on the audio source in Final Cut Pro and turn the track from Stereo into Dual Mono. Then I just disable either the Left or Right channel and am left with only 1 of those 2 signals that is coming through the same on both Left and Right now. Hope that helps explain the process a little better.
I always check batteries before recording. I attach it in a safe space so it can’t fall. As a backup I’ll run a tascam dr-10l mic in front of the speaker. Worst case, my camera picks up audio as well.
nope. I use it as a podcast recorder and use a mic that needs phantom power. But never at a wedding. its a nice feature to have but not necessary for weddings.
shouldn't use the POST-GAIN port as this is after the volume control (GAIN) and if the DJ changes this - your recording will change. Pick the one above it, pre-gain or loop
Very, very useful video. A question: my recorder is a Zoom H6. When I connect it to the speaker, should I move the knob to -20 button (line) or not? Thank you very much.
I recently bought the most recent Tascam DR-44WLB solely because of the Wi-Fi connectivity feature boasted about by Tascam in their marketing. I wanted to position the Tascam several metres from the sound source (our band P.A.) and control the device and monitor levels etc from an iPad on stage. No matter how many attempts and re-boots the Wi-Fi feature simply will not function. It will connect but within minutes connectivity is lost and the whole time wasting procedure, ad nauseum, is repeated. If remote control of this recorder is important to you then, honestly, walk on by and look elsewhere. I've tried connecting with other devices like Android phones, tablets, iPhones etc. None will connect and work with the Tascam DR 44WLB.

The velcro strap idea is awesome
A splitter ("Y" connector/cable) can be used with say two Zoom H1n's set at two different levels too. They have mic/line inputs too.
that's another great way to get dual recording options 👍🏼

Why do you want to use the two XLR input hack (two male XLR) when you have Duel Record function? Is the duel record function not good enough?
Doesn't splitting your signal in half with an adapter cut the gain in half? Loss of audio quality to gain redundancy?
Do you ever use on-camera mics or shotgun mics for ambient stuff or suprise situations where you could not put a lav on someone? I have never done this myself but am considering it.
mainly just use in-camera audio or set a lav down on a table next to a person giving a speech if they ditch the microphone.

That must be a standard 1/4 inch screw that you’d use with release plates.
just a standard camera plate screw and then left over velcro from the DJI Ronin S that held the arms together.

sometimes we have to produce a doc edit of the entire first dances so having the music to sync up to is important for the edit.
