Streets of Philadelphia is amazing, but when this song plays at the end of the movie you can't help but cry. Its about much more than AIDS. You think about family, friends, who's there for you when things aren't easy, about how no one wants to be alone...I could go on.
I can understand how this haunting master piece didnt receive the Oscar . Simply an Oscar would not have done it justice ! Neil Young is a long time favourite of this old guy ! He is an absolute genius with words and music !
I just lost my daughter; she died on August 19 at 20 years old... At her funeral, when I was holding her hand and had the other hand on her forehead, telling her how much I love her, I couldn't stop thinking about this song. It is sad, but at the same time so comforting...
This song will forever remind me of my Uncle that I lost in 1991 to the Aids epidemic. He was a Philly native and one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever known. I hope you are peace, Uncle…we sure do miss you.❤️
@@sheri4c2 I agree it should have but what are you talking about in regards to Streets of Philadelphia? Read the lyrics and explain how it had nothing to do with the movie
This song literally kills homophobia by pointing out the humanity of all of us and the fragility of our lives. It's cosmic and sublime, a true masterpiece.
At 75. I still cannot NOT cry when I listen to this. I was born in the Suburbs of Philly, and never took it as seriously until I heard this done by him at the Oscars. Beautiful doesn't say enough.
This is the ONE song that reminds me of how fragile families and relationships can be. I'm a GROWN-ASSED MAN and still can't watch the ending of the film "Philadelphia" and not break down and cry...
How can Neil Young be such a genius song writer and performer? Beautiful and the piano composition so moving. Breaks my heart for my loved ones. His spirit is magical.
Haunting song. Reminds me of people who I've loved and lost, alive and gone, who passed in and out of my life. We are the only constants in our own lives...until we too are gone.
I watched this movie two days ago. Yesterday, I went to my uncle's house for a small gathering. After everyone else had left, my partner and I stayed talking to him and his husband. It was then he told me he had terminal cancer, and the grand piano that was sitting behind me, the one that he had taught me piano on, was going to me.
My heart turns to compassion and sorrow, and gratitude for that song being written, such a beautiful tribute to the people we loved and lost during the AIDS epidemic, Neil Young writes about real life experiences with such Grace.
A friend of mine back in the mid 80’s asked who I thought was the most talented person in mainstream music. Not the best this or best that, but just plain overall talented . I said IMO. Mr. Young is #2. Gotta give the top spot to Stevie. I couldn’t say who #3 is.
This always brings me to tears, as it did the first time I heard it. My youngest brother passed in 2000 from AIDS. His last days were so lonely, and it drove him to do things we should never be proud to speak about. To this day. I cannot watch the movie, or hear those eerie notes of love for a fellow human being, alone until the end.
Just sayin', this is the one that should have won the Oscar. Less majestic than Springsteen's song, but much more intimate. And the lyric "I won't be ashamed of love" says it all; respect, empathy, and introspection from someone who is himself "straight." No disrespect to The Boss, because his song is amazing as well. Tough call, but this is the one that does it for me.
I’m crying just for what you wrote. I’ve been a fan of Neil’s since 1967. He can swing and miss. But when he connects everybody feels it. A towering genius of song. For so many years.
30 years ago when Philadelphia was released with the amazing movie 1993..this song was up for an OSCAR..my daughter who is now 40 was 10 and grew up listening to Neil Young...his music use to wake our kids up in the morning...anyway her teacher asked the class to vote on the oscars that year and write and essay...she wrote a beautiful essay about this song, 'Philadelphia" and why she thinks it should win the OSCAR and it blew me away....thank you Neil for years of inspiration and song.
One of the most poignant sad songs I have ever heard. Absolutely gets you right in the heart and runs out of your eyes. Couldn’t possibly have been a dry eye at the end of the movie.
don't turn your back on me. this song brought on the tears, and my older and most dearest brother had just died of AIDS. John went next, other reasons. Both the best-hearted people.
One of best songs ever in film history, it's so sad to fit in the movie. After watching Philadelphia, its melody running a rounding my ears, lingering in my mind.
jessie xie it's pretty shocking that Neil Young never released this on a record, or a best hits, he wrote it exclusively for the film, and the official soundtrack is the only way to get it.SO GOOD though. I thought it was built to spill when I first heard it in the movie....I don't mean to be rude but i'm not used to hearing such shockingly amazing music coming from long established acts. but that's fresh as a rose. if it was written yesterday it would be just as powerful and awesome.

I cried like a baby when I watched this movie. I love Neil Young - this song hurts my heart, but I love it and could listen to this 20 or 30 thousand times.
I've got my friends in the world,/ I had my friends/ When we were boys and girls/ And the secrets came unfurled. -One of the deepest, saddest, most beautiful verses I've ever heard. Brings love back into the world.
The movie was a thing to behold. This song at the end is transcendent and redemptive. It makes the emotional payoff, when Beckett dies, a universally sad moment, yet one still filled with hope. When at the end Beckett says to his love, "I'm ready to go.", it is a triumphant and beautiful moment. He has fought, and won, all of his battles with tremendous courage. And now that he has accomplished his last, and arguably his greatest act--because it will ultimately help many others to stand up and to fight for themselves and their loved ones--when he is too tired to go on, he can choose when to stop fighting, and so when to die, with the love of his life with him so that he may go in peace. This song, positioned as it is at the end of both the movie and Beckett's life, is a magnificent coda that signifies the courage and grace that it takes to fight the good fight...even when one is faced with others who are filled with hate and bigotry toward your worthy cause. Neil Young did no less than to bring this song, and all that it signifies, into our hearts and minds, which is the best, most honest way to raise our consciousness about such an important, and worthy, subject. Tears flow freely because they are well deserved. Bravo, Mr. Young. What a class act, as always. Young's music, and his inner beauty and generosity of spirit, transcends him. If he had accomplished this only, in his long and storied career, he would still have been remembered and celebrated for this masterpiece about, and for, the human condition. It truly is a marvel to behold.
