Thirteen years of tremendous hardship and pain. This song gave me emotional, the physical and mental strength to push through and make a life for myself.

Much of what Bruce shares echoes your experience, e.g., the poverty in Freehold New Jersey, staff endorsed beatings he experienced in Catholic school, etc. It's a very intimate read. This is a song that resonates to anyone who has faced loss. I lost my father in law and my grandmother in law within 10 days of each other. Though we faced unbelievable pain, the Boss' song reminds me that pain is a natural thing and we can either succumb to it or we can carry on what was left to us. From what I recall he got a standing ovation for that performance, and it was richly earned. It's one of the most soulful songs to come out of the 1990s, and it beautifully encapsulates the city.
