One of the best Best Actor fields in recent memory, and that's even with such glaring omissions as Harrison Ford in The Fugitive, Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, Harvey Keitel in The Piano, Kevin Kline in Dave, Michael Douglas in the underrated Falling Down, Kevin Costner in A Perfect World, Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire, Kenneth Branagh as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing, and so many others, all from the same year! Not to mention Daniel and Anthony each gave a SECOND performance that year that was receiving some awards buzz, from The Age of Innocence and Shadowlands, respectively. Tom also had a second film out that year that charmed the pants off of us and went on to be a rom-com classic, Sleepless in Seattle.

Phoenix Clouden - It took me awhile to watch it, too. It’s just that the material is so heavy, so important, and so on point that at the time of its release, I just couldn’t. I wasn’t mature enough to handle it. And it depressed me terribly at first. Now it’s one of my fav films of all time.

What an amazing speech, especially when he talked about the thousands of men who died well before their time. Between 1984 and 1995 I lost nearly 100 friends from AIDS. Many were diagnosed and dead within weeks. Tom Hank's portrayal took me back and reminded me of a truly tragic time of loss. I honor them all.

That was a TERRIBLE period, and I am so sorry you were forced to watch so many people you loved be marginalized, demonized, and suffer such lonely deaths. My dear boss of many years lost his oldest son to AIDS. Unlike many parents at that time, he and his wife never left their son’s side. After their son’s death they shared how shocked and devastated they were to watch so many young men with AIDS, suffering and dying alone, without a single friend or family member at their side. Those men’s deaths affected my amazing boss so much that he volunteered to sit with dying AIDS patients 3 times a week for over 2 years. But the experiences were so upsetting for him, he was forced to stop when his blood pressure rose to dangerous levels. Thank God things have improved so dramatically for AIDS patients and the LBGTQIA community in general. Tragically, that tendency to marginalize and demonize prevails today, and we are once again faced with our failure to protect and defend minorities and immigrants as a result of fear-mongering and propaganda!

Tom and Denzel were very brave to do this film about someone dying of AIDS. I went to see the preview in London with a friend who subsequently died from the same terrible illness related to AIDS and his partner had died a few months before. I pray that they have been in heaven for all these years, free of pain and the suffering which AIDS brings. I myself was diagnosed with an AIDS related illness a few years later after their deaths, but was saved by new medication which wasn’t t available for my friends. I wish they could have help on a few years, to be still here with me, for selfish reasons. But with the world as it is , full of hate and lies, full of people who are so incredibly rich on the backs of those paid incredibly little. My friends are better off in Heaven with the other angels. ❤

I don't think she'd worked with Tom until they did "Saving Mr. Banks", but I knew she'd worked with Anthony Hopkins and Daniel Day-Lewis. She and Liam Neeson both star in "Love Actually", but I don't think they have any scenes together. So I guess it's four, because I'm sure she hasn't been in a film with Laurence Fishburne.

Tom Hanks was probably surprised that he won, because the competition was pretty stiff. When you're up against Anthony Hopkins, Liam Neeson, Daniel Day-Lewis and Laurence Fishburne, you'd be thinking: "What chance do I have?"

And *brave*. You cannot - I cannot, and I lived thru it - imagine the climate this film was made in, the beliefs held about perfectly sane reasonable people, not only about AIDS but about homosexuality generally. I pray we never will again, for as bad as it is in parts of our world, and I don't pretend it doesn't look like getting worse, we never sink to such lows again in how we accept our fellow humans being seen. Whatever higher power you do it don't believe in, pray they have mercy on us, because so many of us had so little for Their Children.

Tom Hanks said in an interview that he couldn't play that role today and I, as an openly gay man, say that no one else could have played it like he did. He was absolutely AMAZING in that role. I don't care that the actor is straight. It's called acting and he did it better than anyone could have...period.

They all deserved to win, but reason why Hanks win is this speech. Only Neeson could say something so impact and important to that and other generations. I trully believe that Philadelphia and Tom with Denzel with their unbelievable performance helped and maybe still helping a lot of young gays in their difficult life to achieve acceptance. if people still talking about this movie, great actors and this speech 30 years later it really means something. I watched all 5 movies and others 4 actors was really amazing but Tom win was and still is something more.

Funny fact: Emma Thompson introduced Anthony Hopkins who was nominated in the Remains of the day where she starred too. She also starred in In the name of the father, and introduced Daniel day Lewis's performance, too and she was nominated as supporting actress.
The previous year she won the Oscar for Howard's end and the Oscar was presented to her by Anthony Hopkins (her Co star in Howard's End) who won the previous year for silence of the lambs. That was cool.
