That little introduction that Ben Kingsley gave to Mickey Rourke was just so so classy and touching and yes that one trick pony should have won
Mickey Rourke in the 1980s was a combo James Dean-Marlon Brando. His career should of been so much more!
I seriously wish the Oscars did these '5 actors praising the nominees' job today before they announced the winners. It makes the show seem so accepting and impressive in it's own right if they didn't rush to the winner right away. What does everyone else think?
I totally totally agree with you man.I mean it's a great kind of appreciation to the nominees telling them individually what greatness they have achieved
Yes. Totally
Couldn’t agree more- love seeing the awe in the room when legends come out. That’s the kind of Oscar magic I think we fans tune in for!
Fuck no!!! The Oscars are long enough as they are now
I agree it's a good format. But to do this for all acting nominations with the actress awards too would push the event to nearly 5 hours.
Mickey deserved that year. He bled for that role. What a performance it was. So moving.
Mickey Rourke performance in wrestler was phenomenal!
I agree but I think Penn's transformation into Harvey Milk was far more impressive
Vero! Meritava lui!
He was robbed and now fadded away into obscurity
Im a massive fan of Sean, but Rourke truly bore his soul on that screen. The Wrestler was an hour 45 of raw, personal honesty that, in my opinion, exceeded an Oscar.
I thought Sean penn was gay though to be fair
I became an instant fan after seeing his performance in The Wrestler.
I was so proud of The Wrestler. Especially since about a quarter of the Indy guys they used in the film are ACTUAL friends of mine and a few other people I went to college with. All of us went to see The Wrestler opening night in Manhattan. People were SNEAKING IN to even STAND in the back of the theater to watch the film.
Perfectly put
@@FastEddie86 *?All Madonna´s men are "GAY" anyways🙃*
Ben Kingsley's speech for Mickey Rourke is something special.
Agree
So is Sean Penn's. Very nice tribute from both Kingsley and Penn.
Ben is a class act on and off the screen
Was Mickey away from some time or something? He was great in Iron Man and The Wrestler.
@@IWantToMature85 he's been blacklisted from big roles because of how he views the whole Hollywood machine, that's why you rarely see him in big movies. The few times he is it's because someone is a fan of him or he wants to return the favour like when he was in The Expendables, Mickey was repaying Stallone for letting him be in Get Carter
Mickey Rourke 100% deserved to win that Oscar. He put his heart and soul into that role.
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Mickey Rourke puts his heart and soul into EVERYTHING he deserved that oscar
And so was Sean
Tobey maguire brothers
Both roles were impeccable. I think people got lost in Mickey's comeback and didn't realize just how physical and deep Sean's performance was. Both would be deserved. I personally like Sean's performance a tad better, even if I like The Wrestler more.
"welcome back, mickey Rourke" I love that line and that brad pitt was so proud looking toward him
Brad Pitt was a fan of his in the 90s
In an recent interview he told that he idolised him and Gary Oldman.
Sean Penn is a class act. Acknowledging Mickey's spectacular year.
Mickey Rourke was awesome, no matter what! A truly moving performance.
Robert De Niro (Raging Bull)
Sir Anthony Hopkins (Silence of The Lamb)
Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi)
3 of the most deserving winners in this category
+clift monty what about the pianist????Brody is a great actor, too!!!
+gogo koliou seriously, the Pianist is a masterpiece! Brody was absolutely phenomenal in the film and shows his talented range, he may not belong in that same pantheon quite yet, but hell get there.
+gogo koliou Brody was good in The Pianist, but Day Lewis got robbed that year, imo.
+fred eric One Movie Rocky
deniro kick more ass in godfather II
I know everyone is about Rourke and Penn here, but I was so happy Jenkins got recognized that year. He puts in the work and has damn good performances under his belt.
he was very good in Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Crying shame Hopkins and De Niro haven't done a movie together.
+John Jones they did, 'we are no angels.'
It has sean penn, de niro & anthony hopkins.. 1988 or 89
Robin Panwar Really? I don't remember him being in that. Must have been a small role.
yep smal one.. but extremely funny...
As of 2016, Sir Anthony Hopkins has made 127 films and We're No Angels isn't one of them. Robert DeNiro has made 107 films, and these two amazing actors have never worked together. Here's hoping they someday will! Happy New Year.
Melissa Williams-Cottrell Yeah, he isn't credited at all for 'We're No Angels'. Maybe Robin mistook the actor for a look-a-like.
just watched milk for the first time and i just came here to say he bloody well deserved this, such an iconic performance
Agreed.
Owl Han is it good the film ?
Matty dug IT IS GOOD. REALLY GOOD. BUT THE WRESTLER WAS GREAT
I bet you live a sad, lonely life. Right?
Owl Han
You're in the minority, my artistically vacuous friend.
I LOVED when they did that - bringing previous winners on stage in each category to present the Oscar. Each complimenting a nominee. Once the winner was read, it was almost as if they're welcoming a new member to their club. It's a shame that the producers stopped that.
Well,except for good ole Will Smith…the slapper!😂
You should see when at a quiet advanced age, Olivia de Havilland was on stage with like 40+ other Oscar winners.
LOVED that bit!
Brava!
Love & Light from Miami Shores🦚
Stay safe mate✌🏼🌎
The greatest shame in the history of Oscars... Mickey Rourke was outstanding in many ways... A man who came back from the dead... He deserved his one and only Academy Award...
Definitely!
Rourke was great in the Wrestler but Penn was better in Milk. At least my opinion. And Milk was just a better overall film.
@@evanmoorman3828 I think. So. Too
They don't even nominate any of Christopher Nolan's movies.
really deserved!
all I see is Dustin Lance black in tears of happiness
Winning an Oscar would be so awesome. Sean Penn is a great actor.
Dustin Lance Black crying makes me want to cry. I'm very proud of him and his work with MILK. And glad he also won an Oscar that night.
Me too! As someone who met and bought film from Harvey Milk before he was taken so brutally from us, I am proud to have met a man who gave ME hope. And I’m not even gay.
Anthony Hopkins presenting brad pitt nomination is so beautiful to see they have worked many times together
just two films...
His speech of Pitt felt rushed.
In the end I think it was pretty even, excellent performance by Sean Penn, but you can't despresiar Mickey Rourke's performance was simply impeccable.
There's a vampire sitting behind Mickey Rourke! Edward Cullen AKA Robert Pattinson.
I love this five presenter format for the Academy Awards. This was one of the most beautiful ceremonies in Oscar history.
Rourke deserved more.. His Restler is a masterpiece of acting!
𝑻𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
He did not. And it's Wrestler.
Definitely!
Why that bleach blond innuendo? Pretty sick of Ben to say that
6:37 I think the Dude with the Pearly Whites should of got it !
Sean Penn has the distinction of sharing the great stage with the distinct ..remarkable actors...De Niro..Anthony Hopskins...Michael Douglas..A feat he owns distinctively.
Sean Penn as Harvey Milk..brilliant..beyond brilliant and now, his acceptance speech..I love a guy who can make fun of himself..I love you Sean..
am I the only one who noticed Sean Penn fanboying on the inside while Robert De Niro presented his nomination? I'd be fangirling on the inside too if I were in his spot!
Bri Martinez totally!!!!!
They have been friends for years.
THIS is the way to celebrate an Academy Award- I wish the academy would go back to celebrating each nominee this way.
Mickey Rourke Deserves This Oscar , far far away
How I miss incredible movies and brilliant actors. This is class and glamour. Not found today
Milk is a phenomenal biopic. And Sean Penn carries it.
The stage is just legendary
.
.
.
.
19 nomination and 8 Oscars right there
People not laughing at the jokes made it awkward
Sean is amazing..he needed to win!!
I have watched The Wrestler in the past…but I never realized how many Awards Mickey won for that role. The wrestler was not a film…it was a documentary and as real life as any film could ever be.
Milk was a great movie. The Wrestler, on the other hand, was one of the greatest movies of all time. Nuff said.
And to Sean Penn..ur father was a brilliant man to...Sean Pennnn yes u do Deserve this award Sean Penn... And now you go and do beautiful things for the world thank you Sean Penn...have urself a beautiful life NOW..TO OUR SEAN PENNN. From the public...
I’m so glad to have you as a fan of mine, i would love us to talk more on hangout you can drop your email address to know more about your thoughts?? and advise for me thank you ?
sean penn is the best, pure talent
And Sean Penn, I love you, and your acting was superb in Milk but Mickey Rourke definitely deserved that oscar in this heartbreaking, amazing and haunting performance as Randy 'The Ram' Robinson.
I love, love Sean Penn as an actor he puts himself in his characters. He should have gotten that oscar for "I am Sam" he is one of the best actors in my opinion. Love him
Sean Penn's performance in I am Sam is arguably the worst performance to ever get a nomination. Ridiculously overacted performance. The movie itself was an abomination. It was sappy, condescending, mawkish and manipulative.
Sean Penn may be the best actor working today but I am Sam sure as hell didn't help his career. His best performances were in Milk and Dean man Walking.
I totally disagree with u. He did s remarkable job in "I am Sam" I know a few autistic kids and that's exactly how they behave. I've never watched "Milk" but I heard he played a gay character and I don't particularly care for that so I probably won't ever watch it. However I think he's a phenomenal actor
Josef Hautala Sweet and Lowdown was brilliant. The movie itself was pretty darn good. I haven't seen 21 grams yet but I've heard it's great as well. I'll take a look at it.
Josef Hautala At the moment, probably. I can't think of anyone else who's been consistently giving top-notch performances for about 15 years.
How could he have won for "I am Sam"? He went full retard. You know how the Academy is about that.
He played Harvey Milk in a performance only he could do, but Rourke truly deserved it
The best Actor won the Best Actor's award. Deal with it.
Teared up during this! One of the best Oscar speeches ever
Brilliant way to award an Oscar. Also a brilliant way to highlight the amazing performances from all the nominees.
Sean Penn was fantastic-well deserved.
The Oscar that Mickey Rourke should have win!!
9:28 Robin Wright thinking, "oh good. This was the last thing I needed to support him on. Now I can divorce him".
One of the best, if not the best! Love him too.
Best. Actor. Ever!!! I love Sean Penn!!!! He's my favorite actor!
Mine too.
Great speech by Sean Penn.
Being praised by Anthony hopkins is the best award ever.
Talented man with a great sense of humor. The Oscar was well-deserved..
Fact is, sean penn won this award cause of gay rights movement. Mickey should have won this award, and he is the REAL Winner of this award.
Sean Penn deserved to win I own "Milk" on DVD so I know for a fact that Sean's performance as Harvey Milk was Oscar worthy and that's what Sean Penn is the REAL winner of this award I'm also a gay man so you can understand why I'm glad that Sean Penn won.
Douglas Roth
Exactly that is what I'm saying, sean penn only won this award cause he played a homosexual.
Michael Carranza He won the award because he's a great actor and he's performance in "Milk" was Oscar worthy,
*****
Just watch The Wrestler, one of the best movies of the year.
Douglas Roth
Nah, its all cause of 2008 gay rights movement bullshit, sean penn playing a homosexual won him the award.
How interesting to have those distinguished actors coming out to Elmer Bernstein’s theme to THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, one of the best orchestral pieces for a movie that I’ve ever heard in my life.
They were all so good.
I wish there was an academy award for each one of them.
Sean Penn is brilliant.Totally deserved the Oscar. :)
My favorite Oscar ceremony, ever!
I loved this! I so wish introductions for the top awards could be done like this every year. Nice way to honor each actor.
OMG I love sir Anthony Hopkins & Robert De Niro. Best actors of all time along with Nicholson & Brando
Oh shit, jenn aniston was there sitting behind sean penn. I wonder how awkward it is when she sees Angelina and brad lol
What LOL?????
Hard to notice Jenn when there’s Robin Wright in all her might sitting in front of her
When sean won jen was like thank god brad didn't won otherwise she would have to witness him kissing angelina and thanking her in the speech.
What a classy speech..Love, love, love Sean Penn...:).
6:38 look at Lance he is so happy may God bless you man Tom is really lucky to have you as husband really proud of you man. And Sean I love you
Rourke deserved the Oscar....
Bravo Sean, you're THE MAN
He's such an amazing a actor, Milk and Mystic River are two of my faves by him. Its crazy how well he becomes each character he plays. Glad he won this award for Milk! Harvey was a brave and strong man who left the world too early, but what he did still echoes and plays a part in what's going on in our country today, Sean played him perfectly.
👍❤
I loved his speech.
Dead man walking
Congratulations! Sean Penn is incredibly talented and I’m very impress that he acknowledged the comeback and the talents of Mickey Rourke. Bravo 👏
OMG I DIED WHEN ANTHONY HOPKINS APPEARED. HE IS THE MOST UNDERRATED ACTOR OF ALL TIME THANK GOD THE ACADEMY HAS REMINDED OF HIM AT LEAST ONCE..
I loved Sean Penn in Milk. Honestly no-one else could have played that role. But it was Mickey Rourke's year no doubt.
Its called an opinion sir. Sean Penn did as good a job as anyone would have. He was great, I'm just saying that Mickey Rourke excelled him.
SI MICKEY ME HIZO LLORAR!! GRANDE ACTUACION!! MAESTRO!!!MICKEY!!MERECIAS ESE OSCAR Y MUCHOS MAS!!
Rey Atanacio maybe Daniel Day Lewis
Wow, this was FANTASTIC! I love both Sean Penn and Frank Langella, and was glad that this was their night. And what a group of presenters!
Thank you SOOOO much for this.
Um, Frank Langella lost that night.
As much as I liked Penn in Milk, I really felt that Rourke deserved it for The Wrestler. It was such an awesome performance. If I recall, Rourke was the frontrunner but lost out because of the unpredictability of what we would say in his acceptance speech. It reminds me of the time when Denzel Washington (Training Day) beat Russell Crowe (the clear frontrunner for A Beautiful Mind) in the "black year" of the Oscars (the same year in which Sidney Poitier got the Honorary Award and Halle Berry won for Monster's Ball). Russell Crowe lost out apparently because he was furious that his BAFTA speech was cut short.
Denzil was robbed in previous years also. Malcom X and The Hurricane were clearly the best performances in those respective years.
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl denzel's performance in malcom X was not better than al pacino's in scent of a woman
So Penn who is IRL badass, shows you AMAZING transformation into gay person with feelings and you think Micky should get it?
Really?
@@Saintinthecity-wh9nl I am sorry. I agree with Denzel's performance in Malcolm X getting snubbed, but when it comes to Hurricane, Nope. Kevin Spacey gave the best performance indeed that year in American Beauty.
crowe attacked someone
Mickey Rourke deserves this award as much as sean penn, they had to give the statuette to both.
Sean Penn is just a wonderful actor and human being
Fun fact: Sean Penn almost became Bruce Springsteen's brother-in-law. He was engaged to Bruce's sister Pam for a time.
Its actually impossible to say who was "better", between Mickey Rourke or Sean Penn. Both of their performances were remarkable. It comes down to opinion really. Both were equally deserving.
a lot of actors could have played harvey milk but who else could have played randy the ram
I saw the movie, (The Wrestler) and after the movie I thought to myself "Mickey Rourke must have won an Oscar for this!!! " because I didn't follow the Oscars the past years....So I find this video and I am really disapointed that he didn't won,..but reading the comments I am glad that the world knows which actor was better. To me is like Mickey won the Oscar.BEcause I will never forget his performance.
Oh please. "Better" this, better that. It's a stupid awards show. Stop comparing excellent actors. They're all good.
darren motise Mickey is without a doubt always better than Penn.
Natasza Suarez That's your opinion. Others might think Sean Penn is better and that's their opinion. In the end, they are both good actors.
Swiit Lime Oh. Really? So when he plays Francesco he plays himself or when he plays Henry Chinaski he also plays himself? Are you out of your mind?
Did you decide that mickey should’ve won oscar AFTER you also watch milk?
"Sean Pinn winning Best Actor for Milk"
*Shows thumbnail of Mickey Rourke
Ohhhhh, you guys know what you did...
When I first heard that Sean Penn would be playing Harvey Milk, I thought to myself, Couldn't they find a gay actor to play the role, rather the a man who is terninally straight, like Mr. Penn. There are plenty of good gay actors out there, any one of whom I am sure would have jumped at the chance to play Milk. I went to see the film fully expecting to be disappointed. As it turns out, I walked out if the theater after the film feeling what a great movie. Congrats Sean, u pulled it off!
LOL. I just love Micky Rourke. He's total slime & doesn't care.
*Penn
Well, Penn is the Thumbnail now😁😁😁
Sean didn't seem into Robin. That marriage was over.
Really good job Sean ! Big respect from France
Sean Penn literally BECAME Harvey Milk. All Rourke did was play himself. How people so many people complain about this masterful performance winning this award is beyond me.
because Rourke still deserved it. He won every other award they both competed in even the Golden Globe.
Vivek Varghese No, Sean won the SAG.
Michael Colby Maybe with the exception of that award. But I'm positive he won both BAFTA and GG.
Vivek Varghese He did, but the SAG awards have the most amount of academy members in it.
Sean was amazing in Milk, the only reason people say he is not one of the best actors of all time is because they don't like him as a person. And the sad thing is he really is not a bad guy, he is just really opinionated and has really bad anger problems.
Michael Colby Point in favour, the Academy is extremely biased. Almost all the Academy members who vote are also members of the GG and they do the same, so why were the results different this time? You see so often the GG awards go to the same as the Academy recipients..
Rourke was absolutely robbed!,the best performance for an actor EVER
Mickey Rourke was ROBBED. One of the best performances ever!
Sean Penn deserved that Oscar. He also fully deserved an Oscar for Dead man Walking.
Agree he is a amazing believable actor ,and that face of his helps lol
Absolutely...he was just brilliant in DMW.
and for I am Sam
He deserved his oscar in Mystic River
absolutely agree
I love you Sean!!!!!! You deserve it.
I'd never heard of the brilliant Richard Jenkins until Cabin in the woods , step brothers and then Killing them softly but , of course he's been in movies for over 25 years - glad he's still doing his thing.
All of them are legendary, but I would of voted for the comeback kid, Mickey Rourke. The Wrestler was amazing. It’s one of those movies I could watch over and over again.
I love how Mickey Rourke is in the thumbnail, like a subliminal message that they got the wrong one.
6:35 WOW that guy should win an oscar for that character!!! awesome
this may seem like Hollywood bull, but there's real integrity in what Penn says. we shouldn't hate others.
In a year when most think two are deserving, you go with degree of difficulty. Sean Penn deserved the Oscar. They got it right this year, when Rourke was predicted to win. Penn and Anthony Hopkins in "The Father". Two of the most deserved winners ever, where they came into the night at slight underdogs.
Sean Penn is my favourite actor of all time, he deserved it.
He was amazing in milk ...a true revelation and a tribute to his talent.
I love the way Anthony Hopkins speaks.
good evening
Sean Penn really did deserve this Oscar. I just watched Milk for the first time and it was excellent. I wasn't watching Sean Penn playing Harvey Milk. I was watching Harvey Milk. Great wonderful job.
Harvey sexy milk
Sean Penn was technically impressive, but he only won cos it was a movie about a real life politician who was also gay. That equals instant win right there. To this day, having seen The Wrestler many times, I'm still blown away by Rourke's performance. Never seen an actor so committed to such a depressing role. He's a true artist.
Curious if there was support for Rourke in Hollywood why didn't they, or Penn anyway who has clout, pull him back in? Now he's back and they support him......
No he won cause he should have won for mystic river and I am Sam years before
Ab Floyd this was his second Oscar
The first one was for Mystic River
Robert de niro hated Mickey.
@@PrettyPaintedRecords. Umm. He did win for Mystic River.
It would be one of the most thrilling Oscar moments ever if Mickey Rourke won the award after Ben Kingsley emotional supporting intro.
Loved seeing ALL thee ACTOR'S/ACTRESSES. Your ALL AWESOME! Loved the speech
He’s so beautiful!! Love him!!!😍
I’m so glad to have you as a fan of mine, i would love us to talk more on hangout you can drop your email address to know more about your thoughts?? and advise for me thank you ?
I had to add 'MILK' to my movie collection. So glad I did.
even Penn knew Mickey should have won that night...
Did you even see Milk? This is easily one of the greatest best actor performances of all time. The only reason Rourke gained momentum building to the oscars was by winning popular voted awards like the Golden Globe and Bafta where people like Penn, who don't even bother to show up, never win. Penn swept the critics choice awards and also won the SAG award. He was always the favorite to win. Simply based on the strength of the performance, Sean Penn rightfully won. Rourke was terrific though.
Akash Vijay acting is not a contest for biggest amount of mannerism (which Penn often overuses),its mostly about appearing like a real person.and based on that Mickey Rourke in my opinion is the winner in each performance that one could compare to any given by Penn(whose general display of gesture seems off the reality of film).so basically i think Penn is many times nominated only because he tends to choose oscar material movies(im not saying on purpose but maybe he just likes those more "sappy" themes that tend to manipulate the not very critical audience and its feelings),and appeals to the political agendas of the people in the academy,so he is a good prospect for promoting certain personality traits that would make an "ideal american hero".of course he was gonna win but i dont think it has anything to do with the academy priorizing good acting over "behavior".i dont need a bunch of critics or prize-givers telling me who is a great actor and who is not.
dayargrosario Well that does make sense. But let's just say both are terrific actors and both gave tremendous performances.
Rourke should get an award from his idol Vlad Putin, together with other Putin loving starts like Depardieu and Seagal.
becaus the wrestler is not based on a true story he didn't get the award. While the wrestler played by mickey rourke is one of the best leading actor performence in cinema history and that's a fact.
Sean Penn IS BRILLIANT. He's had his problems and issues and his personal ups and downs, but he has ALWAYS been a BRILLIANT actor. As Harvey Milk, he made me understand who Harvey was as an individual and person, not just as an activist, and he played him with COMPLETE PERFECTION. The Oscar shouldn't have gone to ANYONE ELSE. Yes, Rourke was also AMAZING in The Wrestler, BUT, Sean's work in Milk was more profound BECAUSE of who Harvey Milk was.
Sean Penn's performance as Harvey Milk was soooo amazing! He deserved the Oscar big time.
***** No, for giving a great convincing performance. I forgot I was watching Sean Penn. Mickey Rourke never left.
Overall Sean Penn killed it. Don't get me wrong, Mickey Rourke did a fantastic job, but Sean Penn was sooo good that I believe he sold his soul to be able to pull off that great performance lol...
I watched The Wrestler again like two weeks ago and Mickey Rourke's performance was 10/10. Sean Penn's performance was 11/10.
Exactly lol... Sean Penn is straight, but he was able to pull off the difficult transformation, which is why he deserved to win. Mickey Rourke's transformation was difficult, but no where near Sean Penn's. I wouldn't say the greatest performance all time, that would probably have to go to Robert De Niro for his performance in Taxi Driver. Julia Robert's swept every small critics group awards as well for her performance in Erin Brockovich, but Ellen Burstyn clearly had a way better performance in Requiem for a Dream.
MF DOOM Your opinion. Don’t shove it down people’s throats
what a wonderful show. without doubt Sean deserve recognition
Mickey Rourke deserved this. He was amazing
Sean’s wife at the time Robin kissed him he didn’t kiss her when he got up but she reached over and kissed him on his way to the stage he never acknowledged her she kept smiling through his speech throwing him kisses classy lady
love Ben Kingsley's speech of Mickey Rourke.. he should have won that time.
