Fabian Patrizio True. And comedy AND drama rolled into one is the hardest. Which is why Murray, Sellers and Chaplin all deserved an Oscar for best acting.
On what people have been saying since that year, I've been saying: "No, the winner shouldn't have been Bill Murray". Now, only yesterday I finally saw Mystic River. So, now, what I say is this: Yes, the winner should have been Bill Murray.
Sean Penn is a great actor and he was fantastic in Mystic River, but this oscar was Bill Murray's....Bill's subtle performance in Lost in Translation was just something else.
Josef Hautala The deadpan expression, that's just Bill Murray's face. For a comedian like Bill, who's famous for his nonchalance and quick wit, this was a completely different, subtle performance from him. His expression in every scene, and the way he portrays a fading Hollywood star, who is obviously not to enthusiastic about doing a foreign commercial for some quick cash in the film, I felt it was Murray's best work.
He might have won but his character is now forgotten. Jack Sparrow became a pop culture icon and will forever be an icon. Johnny Depp is a legend for creating Jack and so many other amazing characters ✨

Bill Murray's face >>>>
Lmao! I died! 🤣🤣🤣
😐😐😐😐
He always looks bored af
Mystic River was one of the greatest films of the 21st century
He is literally stopping himself from crying! He so deserved it and I loved him since "i am sam".
1:41 Johnny Depp being so relieved that he doesn't have to tell a speech 😂
Yeah, he’s not exactly the best speaker when he’s not playing one of his characters
He deserved it 100%.Incredible performance.
One of the most amazing performances ever
Bill Murray appears to be just sad. I actually would have given the Oscar to him and not Penn. Reason? the same reason I would have given the Oscar to Charles Chaplin, Cary Grant, Peter Sellers...They all managed to make you laugh and cry in the same movie, and that's the most difficult acting job, because that's reality. That's life.
Penn was unbelievable. He deserved it
+Michael Pecikonis scar vessel
+Fer Abra Comedy is SOOOOO much harder.....so why is drama ALWAYS rewarded????? Yes, Sellers, Jerry Lewis, Chaplin, Grant...all deserved one
Fabian Patrizio True. And comedy AND drama rolled into one is the hardest. Which is why Murray, Sellers and Chaplin all deserved an Oscar for best acting.
Penn was great PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I loved Jude Law's expressions 🌸🌸🌸
Let's just say Lost in translation wouldn't have existed without Bill Murray's performance. He was the REAL winner.
Pablo Almeida But he wasn’t though 🤷🏻♂️
Johnny Depp should have won.
Lol Johnny in POTC is way better than bill Murray’s whole career
He was amazing but Sean Penn deserved this award more than anyone
@@meetheeverma7665 No, not really.
On what people have been saying since that year, I've been saying: "No, the winner shouldn't have been Bill Murray". Now, only yesterday I finally saw Mystic River. So, now, what I say is this: Yes, the winner should have been Bill Murray.
Bill Murray and Ben Kingsley were devastatingly good that year.
Oscar needs Johny Depp
Love, Sean Penn!!!! He, sooooo deserved dis Oscar.💟💟💟💟
🤩🤩😍🥰
Love the standing ovation. A world class actor with a huge body of seminal work.
His expression in every scene, and the way he portrays a fading Hollywood star, who is obviously not to enthusiastic about doing a foreign commercial for some quick cash in the film, I felt it was Murray's best work.
taharat71 i'll go with that..one of the funniest and best actors in the world
Melan grace Yeah Bill's a good actor. And in my opinion, he's one of the funniest guys in the world as well.
should have been nom for
assassination richard Nixon
carlitos way
hurly burly
Suntory Time scene alone should've sealed the Oscar
Well deserved his role was beyond incredible, the scene when he was crying and distraught over his daughter was incredible .
I like how at 2:00, Angelina Jolie is thinking, "Hmm, do I stand up?" as she looks around the audience.
😂
He might have won but his character is now forgotten. Jack Sparrow became a pop culture icon and will forever be an icon. Johnny Depp is a legend for creating Jack and so many other amazing characters ✨
He's a true social justice warrior. His CORE Relief in Haiti has helped 800k people with housing and his work leads the entire country in covid relief. 🙏 Thank you Sean. You are the best. People need to wake up. He's done more for the planet than any actor ever.
I Love it when every time Academy Award Winner mentions fellow nominees.
Dafuq?! Depp got nominated for Pirates?! :O
+Sam Ash As he should be, yes.
+Sam Ash
Why the hell not?
+Sam Ash seems like it was a bad year for Hollywood
+Sam Ash he won SAG for that role
yes
coz he DESERVED it
He is one of my all time favorite actors. As soon as I watched hos performance in this movie, almost 20 yrs ago, I knew he would be nominated for an Oscar. I am so glad he won another one for "Milk". I would love to see him win a 3rd in his career.
Guys
I think bill Murray should have won. Sean Penn was awesome I agree. But lost in translation had something special. Bill's controlled acting deserved him this Oscar. I hope bill wins somewhere in the future.
Billy Murray should have won for Zombieland..
Zombieland sucks
@@baokimng a funny movie actually very nice
@@cicranelnaz dont want to be offensive. But i dont find zombieland funny at all
😆
Bảo Kim Nguyễn Lê The sequel was a million times funnier than the first film.
Anchored by the exceptional acting of its strong cast, Mystic River is a somber drama that unfolds in layers and conveys the tragedy of its story with visceral power.
Man this nomination... for lead actor category, everyone already knew who gonna win for sure.
I think all these actors are great and not everyone can win and it was about time for Sean. He should have also won for an older movie called at close range that also has his brother ,mother , and grandmother in it and it was based on a true story. It's brilliant.
Patty J I only knew Sean's brother chris was in it. I didn't know his mom and grandmother was in it. His mom was also in another movie he did with Robin Wright too his ex wife.
Such a well deserved Oscar! Penn was STUNNING in Mystic River.
1:40 Don't you love it when you always see the other nominees being so joyous and happy when learning they are not the winners?
When I heard him say "Clint Eastwood", my first thought was: Legend !!
I just rewatched Mystic River and Sean Penn was amazing.
There is nothing he can't do. One of our true stars..he is brilliant and touches my heart every time I have seen him work.
***** want to read SIcario script ?
That is nice, but I don't think I would read it. Doing my art. Take care.
***** any other script you're looking for ?
What a great great, calm, humble speech.
Chapeau
Wait.. you're telling me that Johnny has never won an Oscar? Dude what?! Now that Leo finally won one, it's Johnny's turn.
Great quality for 2004
Actually Depp's creation is the most unconventional, boldest and utterly brilliant!! Too bad the Academy had to award Penn because they failed to do that in the past...
My Heathcliff seemed so proud and honestly happy for Sean
Almost all of those actors in the audience were in their prime
Can't believe how beautiful Nicole Kidman is.
One day the Academy will give what is long overdue to Johnny Depp. Captain Jack Sparrow? The definition of phenomenal acting.
One of my 2 or 3 favorite performances in cinema history.
Bill Murray has a lot to be proud for. He doesn't need to worry that he lost to Sean Penn
No one said he did
@@tomt6142 I think the original comment is based upon the fact that Bill Murray appeared to be upset that he lost. The camera pointed to all the other nominees who lost and they all appeared genuinely happy for Sean Penn but Bill didn't even go the gracious applause that most people do when they lose. He looked very upset that he lost so apparently, based on his facial expression and lack of applause for Sean Penn, Bill himself was worrying that he lost to Sean Penn. No one actually said it, his reaction basically did.
Sean is great.
Are you guys serious? Johnny Depp over Sean Penn?!? Did y'all not see his performance in Mystic River orrrr what
Superman13195 no he was not, Penn is a way better actor and he was mesmerizing in Mystic River
Depp was great, but Penn's Jimmy Markum is on another level
Borx Lopez exactly
Superman13195 lol but Depp did not come off as one dimensional? Your taste in performacnes is questionalble to say the least. Depp over Penn....I have heard it all LOL
Superman13195 I am a fan of Guy Pearce but how does that make my taste questionable? He is an incredible actor that has proven time and time again to be one of the very best. Johnny Depp is a hack who has played the same character over and over again for the past 15 years.
It's nice to see such a big actor giving thanks to the author of the source material and the screenwriter in an Oscar speech. Touche.
01:43 Bill Murray is very happy for Sean Penn
Nicole Kidman is sooo ELEGANT!!
Bruno Ganz in Downfall (2004) was sadly overlooked by the academy this year
Galentw Apparently he wasn't eligible for a nomination and even so that would have happened for the following year. Having seen his epic perf. I would loved to have seen him get a least a nomination. :D
Galentw Bruno Ganz in Downfall Mads Mikelsen in The Hunt Gerard Depardieu 36
his work is downfall was far superior to sean penn ham is that my daughter in there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carlos Barton why wasn't he eligible?
This category was for performances of 2003.
Sean was absolutely brilliant and gorgeous in Mystic River♥️😘, an amazing movie with a phenomenal cast!!!! Very well deserved Sean🥰🥰🥰👏👏👏, love you!!!!💞💞💞🌹🌹🌹
this award was redemption for not winning best actor in dead man walking, maybe in the top-three best acting performances of all-time.
Maybe, but his performance in Mystic River was the best by far and deserved to win.
+IIIIIIII This is true. I don't even remember the performance from mystic river but dead man walking was really really great.
+Borx Lopez Johnny Depp deserved to win.
+IIIIIIII I always thought Penn should have won for Dead Man too. Will never understand why Nicolas Cage won every award on the planet that year for Leaving Las Vegas. Such an obvious, unsubtle performance compared to Sean's carefully calibrated Matthew Poncelet.
+Borx Lopez And I agree with that, too.
