I would also point out the great makeup effects in Lincoln. While Daniel Day Lewis, at the time of filming, was actually about Lincoln's age during the time the film takes place, in photos of Lincoln you can see the presidency has aged him considerably. And I think they did a really solid job capturing that with the makeup. Look at a picture of Lewis in the movie and then a picture of him in real life and tell me you don't see a noticeable difference.
Both Foster and Mirren presented this year. Foster co-presented Best Actress (along with Jennifer Lawrence) to Frances McDormand for THREE BILLBOARDS, while Mirren co-presented with Jane Fonda the Best Actor award to Gary Oldman (Day-Lewis was nominated for PHANTOM THREAD this year).
Not only is Daniel Day-Lewis genuinely the greatest actor of all time, he's also one of the most humble people too. A real family man, loves his wife, doesn't, and never has got involved in the 'celebrity' culture, and just gets on with his work always delivering incredible performance after incredible performance. I think she did - she wouldn't have taken that risk! Her glasses weren't on when she came out, but they were by the time the camera got back to her when she'd announced all the nominees, so that suggests she looked in the envelope whilst the camera was on the nominees. Imagine if it hadn't been Daniel Day Lewis's name in that envelope and she announced him as the winner! All hell would've broken loose lol (as we saw a few years later....)
@@connorw2k I can't imagine she would have taken that risk though! Yes, it was fully expected it would go to Daniel Day Lewis, but there is always going to be that small chance that someone else's name is in the envelope and it would just be too risky not to make absolutely sure! The alternative of course is that she'd already opened the envelope before coming out on stage and so knew whose name was in there, but if that were the case, why put her glasses on after announcing all the nominees? We don't see her at all when she is announcing all the nominees, so she had a good amount of time to put her glasses on and look then, but who knows eh? :)
shouldn’t have been too obvious considering Joaquin Phoenix gave an overall better performance but his character was more edgy and not a prominent figure like Lincoln so the academy didn’t give him the award.
While Daniel Day-Lewis has retired from acting, he has left a legacy of brilliant characters, including oil tycoon 'Daniel Plainview,' a guy with cerebral palsy 'Christy Brown,' a Mohican warrior 'Hawkeye,' a street gangster 'Bill the Butcher,' and 'Abraham Lincoln.' Now that's what I call range... one of the greatest actors in cinematic history.
This guy is on a league of his own. There are actors and then there is Daniel Day-Lewis. Nobody comes even close, male or female. This guy becomes the character he is playing. For him, it becomes a matter of life and death. There are no hiccups in his performances. It's just amazing to say the least.
Joaquin Phoenix comes close, though he has only started being given really good material since his comeback. He has shown more versatility than Daniel Day Lewis
And I I don't know. Don't take me wrong; I think Joaquin is a great actor. He is one of the best, however, we are speaking about roles where you have to act like already known characters. Daniel Lewis is good at that. You know who else I think is awesome actor? Bryan Cranston.
Jorge Ortiz I mean, his portrayal of Johnny Cash is one of the most dedicated and accurate in acting history (even going as far as singing just like him) . It's just that he almost never closes those kind of roles.
No one in the audience took more than a fraction of a second to decide to give him a standing ovation. This achievement is more profound than an Oscar. A truly incredible and remarkable performance.
He's acted amazingly in a couple of dozen movies, just fewer the last couple of decades. And he's not just a film actor. He was amazing across the board. The 3 roles he won best actor Oscar for isn't all of them... in fact In the Name of the Father and Gangs of New York where he was only nominated are my favourites. Last of the Mohicans, My Beautiful Laundrette, Age of Innocence and the Unbearable Likeness of Being are all up there as performances go. Even bit roles like in Gandhi were impressive. This ranges over so many character types, ages, at least 5 nationalities...
You just can't beat that for an acceptance speech- sincerity, modesty, earnestness, honesty, class and humor. That trophy was his as soon as it was released.
No kidding! I got lost, forgot it wasn't really Lincoln. Which is more odd that I never met, heard or actually seen him in person obviously. I can't explain it
The Academy should change the name of the category from now on, in the future, it should be like this: "And now, in the Daniel Day-Lewis category, the nominees are..."
ryantres85 ..if category was DDL award..no actor would win, thats why its called the oscars. To give actors a chance..the real ddl is on another level!
Daniel Day Lewis is a unique and rare talent. Not only does he almost physically embody his characters, but he makes you believe he is that person. There are many incredible actors out there, Hanks, De Niro, Pitt, DiCaprio, Freeman...but none of them have ever mesmerised me so much on screen, that you think he's not acting. Look at just a small section of hi incredible versatility. The Bounty Sunday Bloody Sunday My Left Foot A Room With A View In The Name of The Father Last Of The Mohicans Age Of Innocence The Crucible Gangs Of New York Nine There Will Be Blood Lincoln ....brilliant, just brilliant 💜
Daniel's representation of Christy Brown could be sitting right next to his Lincoln and you would never know they weren't two completely separate people. You can say that about all of the mesmerizing characters he has portrayed.
How can one be so humble? With all the fame and money? It’s outrageous how he’s been able to shake all the temptation of being so famous, talented and successful. This man is one of the best human beings I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching work. He keeps life simple and that is just wholesome.
Probably the most eloquent and articulate acceptance speech ever heard at the Oscars. It was full or wry irony, jest, self deprecation and emotion - I’d have given him another trophy just for this speech!

The fact that this man is so modest, calm and even charming in real life makes his most chaotic and despicable roles so much more impressive; some of the biggest actors are dying too young, I just hope Daniel Day-Lewis stays with us until he's happy with what he delivered in his career, and to his family.

'The mysteriously beautiful mind, body and spirit of Abraham Lincoln. " That line gets me every time.
Eloquent and beautiful as the man himself.
No wonder Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher awarded the Oscar to President Abraham Lincoln
Lol Abraham Lincoln was a racist.
@@Braylon18 Yes everybody is a racist to you libtards
joaquin looked so happy when he lost lmao

He hates getting on the stage he has anxiety.
he won't be as happy this year! well, hopefully!
He's being sarcastic
HE WON, MY MAN WON!!!
You see this guy and you think: “This can’t be Daniel Plainview”. Thats how good Daniel Day Lewis is. He completely immerses himself in his roles. A legend
Thats exactly why I came here... Daniel Plainview is hard as fuck !! I needed to hear the real man behind the character
I drink your milkshake
DDL as Daniel Plainview is the best performance I ever seen.

Daniel Day-Lewis has received his Oscars from Jodie Foster, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep. I would not complain xD
Charlie Harrison Absolutely right ! They're fine, impressive actresses.

I just loved Hugh Jackman and how happy he was for DDL when he won. Hugh is a gentleman and a class act. And always so handsome :)
A true gentleman. Gotta respect that.
Bro! The way his wife looks at him as he rises to go accept his Oscar. She loves him so much and is so proud of him
And then he goes and kisses Sally Field and doesn't even look at his wife xD

I fell in love with Daniel Day Lewis when I saw him in 'In the name of the Father'. Such a beautiful, humble man, with the best smile.
The same exact thing happened to me too.
I just watched the movie 30 minutes ago... and I'm in love with this beautiful handsome man ❤️😍
Great, great film.
Great film, great performance !!!
That embrace between Lewis and Streep is something to behold. The amount of respect on display between two of the all time greats.
Daniel day Lewis is truly a master at his work. Well deserved. I bet all the other actors breathed a collective sigh of relief when he retired
Phoenix: Oh and Merryl one small thing, when you hand me my oscar, could you introduce me as Joker?
Wooow in my wildest dreams Meryl will hand him the Oscar! ❤️😍
Why am i seeing this boring overused comment
It'll probably be Olivia Coleman that gives Joaquin Phoenix the oscar
Nehemiah Alvarado 😂😂
Why are Joker fans in a video about Daniel Day Lewis?
His wife looks to be absolutely head over heels in love with him.
I would
His wife is the daughter of legendary playwright Arthur Miller....so it runs in the family...what an incredible actor man !!

Respect *Sir*
That's a really good book
Forgetting the mind blowing talent for a while ,how graceful and humble is this man !Beyond words !
Meryl didn't even open the damn envelope. That's how obvious it was.
Connor Webb 🤣🤣🤣
shouldn’t have been too obvious considering Joaquin Phoenix gave an overall better performance but his character was more edgy and not a prominent figure like Lincoln so the academy didn’t give him the award.
Ryan Akwar Meryl Streep does what she wants
While Daniel Day-Lewis has retired from acting, he has left a legacy of brilliant characters, including oil tycoon 'Daniel Plainview,' a guy with cerebral palsy 'Christy Brown,' a Mohican warrior 'Hawkeye,' a street gangster 'Bill the Butcher,' and 'Abraham Lincoln.' Now that's what I call range... one of the greatest actors in cinematic history.
Probably should have won for Hawkeye...

Daniel Day-Lewis is a prince among men.
Sean Pultz he brought president lincoln to life in the 21st century
yeah hes a fucking god
Couldn’t agreed more!
Sean Pultz damn right
well said
He actually comes across as socially shy which makes his transformations as an actor all the more astonishing.
I read that too!
I love how Jackman genuinely looked happy for Lewis, even though he didn't win himself.
He seems like a very nice guy
Daniel Day Lewis is Jackman's favorite actor. He said himself on the red carpet that he was "star struck" when he shook Day Lewis's hand :)
nicest guy in Hollywood!
Totally agree. Jackman is a stand up guy, as is day lewis, the greatest actor ever
Marlon Brando is the best actor of all time, I think DDL is one of the greats but Marlon Brando is just one step above the rest in my top 5.
***** Joaquin Pheonix was brilliant in Walk the Line. His impression of Cash could be better, but his singing was excellent I believe.
What a sweet, generous man. And what a great actor. His portrayal of Lincoln was brilliant. He deserved to win.
Every single one of those films is amazing.
No one in the audience took more than a fraction of a second to decide to give him a standing ovation. This achievement is more profound than an Oscar. A truly incredible and remarkable performance.
He is still underrated in my opinion.
*overrated.
aman gajraj **underated
aman gajraj lol sure
For doing 2-3 type roles, he gets the prestigious Greatest ever tag. Man, if this isn't overrated i dont know what is overrated then, smh.
All easy things to say when you win. Would he say the same as a loser?
Hands down. The greatest actor of our generation.
Meryl Streep is the only person qualified to give Daniel Day Lewis an award for acting.
Her and Adam Sandler.
Yeah Meryl and Daniel are the two "beast" actors of their generation !!!

What a beautiful tribute ... Daniel D-Lewis truly is the best. Admire him so much.
Joaquin and DDL are on another level
The fact that this man is so modest, calm and even charming in real life makes his most chaotic and despicable roles so much more impressive; some of the biggest actors are dying too young, I just hope Daniel Day-Lewis stays with us until he's happy with what he delivered in his career, and to his family.
That was such a beautiful acceptance speech. How anyone can have that much composure and ability to express humour and humility is beyond me. The mutual love and respect between DDL and Rebecca is very beautiful to see.....made my eyes leak to be honest.
Daniel Day-Lewis is the greatest actor ever breathe, walk and speak in that planet (of all centuries) !!! He is "THE ACTOR" !!! I rest my case !!!
+Larry the Wind He is the Holy Grail of acting says PTA
+Larry the Wind no, Joaquin Phoenix is better and should have won this. He can disapear into a role without the help of an evil looking mustache and over the top accent. Phoenix in The Master is better than anything DDL has ever done.

Phoenix is always uncomfortable during award ceremonies, as always.
Well, not for Gladiator when he was first nominated. But I would probably stay the same if I won but wouldn't mind being nominated.
introvert
He is more concerned with his works, his performance...awards r not his primary objective...He wants to deliver his best..of course...Academy is best f d best but Phoenix is different personality.. believe me..there r individuals who doesn't care abt so many regular day to day matters but is dead n passionate serious when it comes to what they love even though majority lot will ridicule it
Its funny enough when he's still giving his best performances when he's usually unaware of that his performances are getting the Award's attentions every now and then.
