Too bad it wasn't an HBO series. Would've liked to have seen the entire presidency depicted.
Who's to say it won't happen? :)
Daniel Day Lewis retired from acting
@@TheChefShipwreckinAlaska maybe not with Mr. Lewis in the role.
They should give it the 2008 John Adams treatment
HERE-HERE!🙏🇺🇲💪
Daniel Day Lewis in his absolute finest acting. Perfection. This movie is perfection.
This was one of the greatest movies ever made in history. Spielberg is a master, and that is a vast understatement.
agreed it was so good then again anything made by spielberg is fantastic
No doubt
When I came out of this movie I was weeping at the INCREDIBLE privilege of being alive to witness the work of Daniel Day Lewis.
It might be the finest film ever made. It took one of the most complex stories, and while remaining almost completely true to the facts, presented it to the viewer. In such a way, that you could immerse yourself in the brilliant performances and trappings of the period, Without having to concentrate on all the subplots and decipher subtle nuance, to comprehend it fully, without any lingering ambiguities or vague inferences. At the end completely understand this incident, what went in to bringing it to fruition, and how it affected those "real people" involved. Finally, in spite of the fact that, at the conclusion, 'the great leader" is dead my predominate emotion was not the melancholy that would usually accompany that "hero dies in the end" finish. It was actually uplifting and lighthearted. Maybe because the time, the deed, the history, is always larger than the man? I am not sure, but then again, I am also not Spielberg.
wHAT PART OF TEL AVIV ARE YOU FROM.
Huh?
@@SULLA_1 Dunning-Kruger much?
This film is a real master piece in my book. Thanks.
Ditto
Yes. It was a privilege & real pleasure to view this film.
In what book that is? You mean the script?
Can't wait to see it!
Actually most movies portray lincoln as sounding nothing like he did in reality, he actually did not have a deep voice and in fact according to people who heard him speak and historians he actually had a high pitch, nasally sounding voice. A lot of people actually praise the accuracy of Lincoln's voice in this movie.
no one knows how lincoln sounded. There were no tape recorders back then
Yes ..after you medication er meditation haha
You can bet your bottom dollar that if anyone on this planet researched how Lincoln's voice sounded, it's Daniel Day Lewis...The Greatest Actor in History.
@@DavidParkerToronto Clearly, no one knows what Lincoln sounded like.. however there are a few first-hand accounts written by people who did know .. and described in detail the sound and timbre of not only his voice, but his pronunciation of certain words as well. Lewis did an AMAZING job bringing these descriptions to life.
David Parker people were around tho...
I'm British (and proud of it) but even I wonder at the greatness of a man such as Lincoln - the USA was fortunate to have such a man as their leader. Furthermore, the Gettysburg address is simply one of the most beautiful speeches in the history of the English language.
In 4th grade, we were required to memorize, so that we could recite to the class from the front of the room, the preambles to both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
In addition to those two relatively short preambles, we also had to memorize the Gettysburgh Address.
Getting familiar with the ideas and values declared in preamble and testified in memorial, has provided a substrate that withstands all that could shatter our aspirations for the first democracy of the modern era.
The right man at the right time. Washington, Lincoln and Roosevelt (Theodore) all filled that role.
Aww I wish they did a 16 hour mini series. Is that just me?
YES!

I love this type of movie. History!!!
I'm hearing that! 😅
I love History!❤
Probably would have made more money.
Daniel Day Lewis is one of the greatest actors on this planet earth. He is brilliant.
Spielberg and his team's masterpiece, what a privilege watching it and it rightfully was lauded with commendations and awards, simply brilliant!
One of the finest, greatest movies ever made, with some of the greatest actors of our time. Only Spielberg could do this.
You're right. It's easy to find the emetic in Hollywood preciousness, but Spielberg's team here is anything but. Heck, everyone in this featurette seemed to radiate Lincoln's humility.
Now I find myself wondering about the slippery business of patriotism - that thing which is humility's opposite. From its ugliness to something sweeping, if subtle, that lies in our hearts. Or maybe it's an emotion we can examine in the collective.
To exhort individual self-examination is to beg mutiny. But a lot of us are going to have to do that to fight what lies ahead - without anyone close to Lincoln's caliber to lead us.
Lol thanks for your kind forbearance in reading this.
Paz y luz.
Im reading "Team of Rivals" a great book about Lincolns presidency and his cabinet. Amazing book.
Damn right son
Daniel Day Lewis could very well be the greatest actor of our generation.
such a wonderful movie. definitely among my favorite movies of all time. it really is a crime that it wasn't chosen as Best Picture of the Year by the Academy Award Committee
I think Sally Field saw that, as maybe her last big movie. Spider man 2 and TV just doesn't have the writers that came to the table for a movie like this.
This is a movie should be shown in every history class in this nation. Now we all are the keepers of our freedoms and keeping this huge experiment safe. So this movie was so well presented. We need to watch this every time we go and vote. The leadership we vote in is what will keep this country strong. They represent our voice in the world. Professional politicians are not working well enough because for some it has become wealth being shaped for later. It has to change.
Judy Evancic and the John Adams HBO series
@Windflower 95 fegelien!! Fegelien!! Fegelien
It was a superb movie and every high schooler should be required to see it.
They were both so good in this. You feel like you personally know Lincoln a little bit more from this but Sally Field was so tortuously good as Mary Todd. She was almost hard to watch because you could perceive the pain underneath the surface.
He got the "high, reedy" voice right...and the crazy spirituality, and the depression and mood swings.
I love Doris Goodwin, she’s written some and produced some of my favorite documentaries, Her History Channel Lincoln docudrama I purchased soon it was available
One of the films that's only going to get better with time. You must watch this movie more than once to really appreciate it.
Yes, indeed! I have seen it
seven times..!
And now some people want to tear Lincoln's memory down, spreading the absolute lie that he didn't want to free the slaves. Our world is utterly insane.
Tommy Lee Jones only does one character: Tommy Lee Jones. And he's magnificent doing it.
He's obviously great at playing cops but IMO he's a really versatile and slightly underrated actor
He was great playing a real Harvard Jock, in "Love Story."
hahahaha
Watch "John Adams," then "Gettysburg," then 'Lincoln." Then make sure your children and grandchildren do the same.
He's 6'2, about 2 inches shorter than Lincoln, but Sally Field is really short, she's only 5'2, so it makes him seem like a giant when he stands next to her
Sally is actually the same height as Mrs. Lincoln.. she had to gain 25lbs to be her weight... so in actuality the distance would have been two inches difference. Maybe they should have had DDL wear shoe prosthetics to make him taller?? That is really all they could've done to make him exactly like Lincoln... but either way DDL is a genius actor and Spielberg got is so so right .... just an amazing depiction of Lincoln. I love DDL.... he's def prob my top actor I love to watch!!
Daniel Lewis ....what a great actor and so Sally Field...,great actress
Why are people coming here to hate on Abraham Lincoln, seriously
They're just butthurt because their great great great grandfathers lost the war
richrocks95 Exactly. Abraham Lincoln WON, and was vindicated by history. He belongs to the ages. His enemies lost, and have been consigned largely to the dustbowl of history. Outside of a fringe group of Lost Cause adherents, who the hell cares about Jeff Davis and Alexander Stevens??
That's a truly logical thing coming from a commie.
Indeed
+Kyle Barn I seriously don't know how its possible to even hate him...
people just don't have respect nor do they understand what the story is about Abraham Lincoln and what he did to free the slaves
Lincoln's Great Great Grandfather Mordecai Lincoln lived in my hometown of Scituate Massachusetts. His home built in 1690 still stands & his gravestone is still legible in one of the town's old burying grounds.
AssinnippiJack my grandmas house was built in 1905 and is almost falling down around her
Evidently the Chelsea politicians never heard about it and moved in on you. In their natural habitat they literally stole the street and sidewalk-one brick at a time-ripped down the oldest house in town-for a parking lot-and schemed yo destroy the Cary House-built by Governor Bellinghamin the 1650's-rather than pay for needed repairs, and cleared the way for arsonists to burn down three of the schools-to resell the land to developers. And alongtheu way they corrupted and destroyed every veteran's civic improvement organization in town to squeeze every loose dime out of them, Be grateful they never noticed you!
Yeah, that's relevant to the movie.
Noticed the Biblical first name, They were common, back in the day; but this custom disappeared after the Civil War, and after WW1, pretty much gone. I hope extra care is given to preserve the name on the stone.
Thank you for this information.
The ticking sound of the pocket watch in the movie was actually Lincoln's watch? That is amazing!
it took a licking, but it kept on ticking
Great team, excellent direction and amazing performances of Daniel Day Lewis,Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones.
The best movie of 2012.
i am a direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln Through his son Robert. and My Father as well as his father were also named Robert Lincoln.
how, I thought Abraham Lincoln no longer had any direct descendant since Robert Todd Lincoln beckwith died in 1985 with out any children
i am a direct descendant of Robert Todd Lincoln 3 times removed who died in July of 1926' While Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith was from the Inlaw side of the family.
ok, just wondering...... that's really great. I always looked up to Lincoln and to be related to him would be really cool.
Even Tom Hanks is a descendant of Abe Lincoln.
ya, your right, he's related..... But not a direct descendant of Abraham Lincoln.
Mary Todd’s Strawberry dress is legend ! She wore it to Ford’s Theater the night of the assassination. Amazing, the costume department!
I’m watching again! Where is it? Netflix, maybe? Anyone know? 🤷♀️
"I am the President of the United States of America, clothed in immense power!"
I like how they got his voice more right than in the past. Apparently it was described as high pitched and reedy
I always felt like my Dad and Grandpa, looked like Abe Lincoln. I found out a few days ago that he is our cousin. He is my 4th cousin 6 X removed.
Amazing!! What a family legacy
One of the best that Spielberg has ever done. One of my top three of the last 70 years.
But nevertheless I would assume pure righteousness and a deeper inner morality caused him to fight for the abolition of slavery
Daniel was the right choice for Lincoln. Sally pulled it off even with the age gap, what a great roll to play Mary Lincoln.
One of the Greatest Americans in history. And the GREATEST American President to have ever served.
When I look at Spielbergs greatness, I can’t help but covet that talent. I’ve always appreciated his meticulous attention to detail.
Mr. Speilburg , America needs to be reminded about what Lincoln did to save the Union, and a 16 hour miniseries may unite us again. We are divided again , and must be brought back to our finest angels of unity again . Empathy , respect , thoughtfulness , and belief in our constitution , and democracy need to be refreshed in our souls again as a united nation.
Greatest President who ever lived.
My favorite always!!
aranphor We have one now. It’s too bad you’re missing it because you’re listening to the msm. Try Q.
That's more like Reagan, FDR, Ulysses, or Dollar bill
She Wheels-do you work for the Onion? as for Q, I don't do phony cults.
George Washington was a like noble leader, perhaps greatest before his start as the first US president. He had indefatigably shepherded the win of the American Revolution, and then (refusing some colonists' exhortations that he be crowned king) into its birth as a democratic republican new nation.
I took my 10 year old son to see this film. On the way home we stopped at the new National Veterans Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. We went to the section reserved for those fallen men and women from the War in Afghanistan. My son picked a random headstone and planted a small US Flag. On this past Memorial Day my 23 year old son thanked me. I feel all 10 to 12 year old boys in America should see this great film. 🇺🇸
Stephens reference to “Rashomon” is BRILLIANT!!!!! Utterly brilliant.
Thank you, Mr. Lincoln. Thank you, Mr. Spielberg.
Kevin Morgan berg
Thanks.
President Lincoln & Mr Spielberg!
@@rjs1jd Yes, indeed!
for what?
Again thank you to all the extras and stunt people who worked this film. And the behind the Seen helpers.
Who else could ever compare with this proformous of Lincoln! Its really not even a question.
I've watched this movie countless times and never get tired of it ; I believe it's one of the best movies I have ever seen, Daniel Day Lewis did a superb job as did the rest of the cast ; if I had been a member of the academy I would have nominated it for several oscars. Steven Spielberg is an excellent director, I first noticed it with the great job he did with the realistic detail he gave to Saving Private Ryan but more so to the movie Lincoln; its not so much like you just watching a movie, its almost as if your actually there. A definite must see !!!
Spielberg is the greatest directors in film and choosing the right actors for each role, can't wait to see 'Lincoln'
such a beautifully made video. wow, i am stunned
No one would be shocked to hear that Lincoln may have held racist views during his time. But the notion of racism is fluid, just as are all notions involving prejudice(s). What is important is to understand that, firstly, this is cinema and cinema is art, thus open to the artist's interpretation. Secondly, although holding what we now regard as backwards views, his legacy is one that will be remembered for helping achieve something none before him had, freedom. That is what's most important
Poor man Abraham Lincon was a wounded hero he suffered alot of emotional suffering all his life, just like a shot wounded solder that just keeps fighting he kept going.
I had eagerly awaited this movie. I had read "Team of Rivals" twice. I just love everything related to the XIX century, and this book by Doris Kearns Goodwin captured it so well. The movie was announced long ago with Liam Neeson as Lincoln, and when finally Daniel Day Lewis was cast and the movie went into production, I thought it was going to be really special. And it is, it's a great film. As this making of documentary proves, everyone involved really knew what they were doing: long shots, no fast editing, no big melodramatic music score, gas and natural lights,...amazing movie. I only wish they could have filmed more of the book, which is extraordinary.
Fer Abra If they had filmed the entire book, it would've been a mini series and I don't think it would have been watched like this movie was watched. I love history, but viewed this movie 3 times to comprehend it all.
I'm happy that it was Mr. Lewis and not Mr. Neeson acting as Honest Abe!
Don't get me wrong! I adore Mr. Neeson as an actor! But I don't wanna here Aslan out of Lincoln's voice, hence, my point above!
This film deserves more Oscars. I was very disappointed that night
absolutely!
The Oscars don't deserve this movie.
Abe Lincoln had/has tremendous charisma. He will always be my favorite US president. DDL and Field plus Spielberg and so many others made this a very special film. Very moving to watch.
this movie is by far the most underrated movie in all of movie history. shame on the Academy for not choosing this movie to be the movie of the year, and shame on the Academy for not giving Steven Spielberg the Oscar for director of this movie like he so richly deserved
"The Union government liberates the enemy’s slaves as it would the enemy’s cattle, simply to weaken them in the conflict. The principle is not that a human being cannot justly own another, but that he cannot own him unless he is loyal to the United States." -- "London Spectator," 1862
I was a History major....to me there was no greater President before or after Abraham Lincoln.....I felt Spielberg, Lewis, Sally and all the others brought him alive....I actually felt I was there for that period of time in history....when they show him dying, I wept... as if I was in that very room when he died....my favorite movie of all time...
I loved LOVED this film!!! No need to have a pointless RUclips argument. That's all.
Pointless? Lol
Steven Spielberg needs to direct a Star Trek film. He brings an authenticity that's needed in the franchise.
That would be fantastic.
Just imagine Star Trek: First contact directed by him. The Borg. The Queen. Picard and Data.
Just on actors fitting to look the part of the real life characters they played - I firmly believe that no actor ever fitted the look of the person they portrayed than Jackie Earle Haley as Alexander Stephens
I didn't even know how Alexander Stephens actually looked like. Then I googled and cursed that the movie was so good, its polluting the google searches with Jackie Earle Haley.
I was wrong lol.
This movie..... truly amazing achievement.
No matter how talented, there is no living actor I can think of - and come to think of it, no actor from the past, either - who could have even come close to Daniel Day Lewis’ portrayal of Lincoln. And, I think that Sally Fields also deserves accolades for her portrayal of Mary Lincoln - a homely, rude, selfish, arrogant woman - who was more than just a little mentally unstable as well. Sally gave a great performance of a very unattractive historic figure.
In fact, all the actors in this film gave fantastic performances, in roles both major and minor.
The script, the cinematography, the editing, the set and costume design... were all incredible.
This film is, IMO, a masterpiece.
Donny Thompson - Beautifully stated.
Love the film... but I think Spielberg fudged the ending. In my opinion it should have ended with Lincoln walking down the hallway. We all know what happens next anyway.
Watched the movie today. Spielberg has made a brilliant film and succeeded in retelling the story behind the 15th amendment taking into account all the pitfalls of American polity in that crucial phase of history. Daniel Day-Lewis deserves all praise for his excellent performance.
Great movie a actors about abe lincoln
The right man for the time"god save the union".the fighting 69th Irish out of new york
Great to see such a historically accurate film. If this had been made in the United Kingdom where I am from over half of the cast would have to be of African or Arab heritage. Lincoln would have been probably been played by a female actress from the Caribbean. Suspension of disbelief is a fact. I'm glad Spielberg understands this and doesn't give in to the pressure.
Guess who made Mrs. Mary Todd Lincoln's dresses? Elizabeth Keckley, an African American modiste who lived with the Lincolns while in their employ. Gloria Reuben plays Keckley in the movie. Not one mention of Keckley in this 20 min featurette.
I think Lincoln is Spielbergs best film alongside Hook
Lincoln was an interesting figure. Believed in government of, for and by the people but assumed the powers of a dictator and arrested and imprisoned Southern sympathizers w/o charge or trial. He was against slavery but was willing to tolerate it if if would preserve the Union. He had all the racial prejudices of the day. Being willing and able to change based on new knowledge and circumstances is a sign of a great person.
Talltrees84 - Lincoln assumed the powers of a wartime president, not a dictator.
A pending civil war was dropped into his lap on inauguration day (seven states already seceded, federal installations under siege, and Washington DC itself surrounded by slave states and in danger of being cut off). That fact had quite a bit to do with how he exercised his war powers as commander-in-chief. By the Constitution, the president is "clothed in immense powers" to put down a rebellion. The previous two residents of the White House had been branded as "do nothings" who allowed the nation to slide into civil war and lost their job. Lincoln profited from their example and was determined to not suffer the same fate.
Preserving and defending the United States from all enemies foreign and domestic was his first and foremost priority by his oath of office (read it). Slavery was illegal in many individual states by 1861 but was not yet a violation of federal law, and therefore was not a matter for the president . Civil war and dissolution of the United States, on the other hand, was very much his responsibility. If the nation collapses, slavery and all other issues become moot points for a nation that no longer existed. He had to save the Union first.
I agree with your last sentence. Lincoln was very mindful of the wisdom of incrementalism and not getting so far out in front of public opinion that he caused a backlash and lost popular support and the election (and REelection). After all, you have to be president in the first place to have a chance at changing anything. On the other hand, he was very skillful at leading the public instead of just following public opinion. It took an immense amount of political skill to walk that tightrope particularly in the middle of an active rebellion.
@@TS-ev1bl Wartime presidents have always had to deal with winning a war / making it through a national emergency while preserving the rights and freedoms of the Constitution. Wilson in WWI, Roosevelt in WWII, LBJ and Nixon during Vietnam, George W. in the war against terror. Harsh after the fact judgements are easy in retrospect. Hopefully we have find the balance between the two if it should exist.
Lincoln cared very much about passing the 13th amendment, but most Americans at the time did not. The Civil War was never about slavery for most who fought and voted between 1861 and 1864. Many did not lament the end of slavery and even welcomed the damage it did to Southern elites who had started the Civil War, but the war was about 'the Union" for the vast majority of Americans. Winning the war and ending slavery were two very different things in the eyes of most Americans. Ending slavery was the icing on the cake for most Unionists. The end of slavery was an abstraction that didn't affect them and that they didn't care about. Most Americans, north and south, took slavery for granted. It has always existed in Anglo-America. Fighting to end slavery was a radical and marginal view throughout the war.
As a SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZEN i ALWAYS find myself diving DEEP into President Abraham Lincoln documentaries its so fascinating and PROFOUNDLY
A masterpiece. I am privileged to watch such a great movie with great Daniel Day Lewis about a great President
I loved the movie but was saddened when walking out of the theater to hear people saying this movie was fake. That was disheartening. Once more what made it worse they were black. This showed me how peoples politics are more important to them than history itself.
Imagine writing 550 pages and they only use 70 of those pages 😆, all that work!!!
...All that money. 👍💯😂
Even watching this I smile and moments of tears. It's like a rush of everything I've read and watched hits me at once.
The directing, the lighting, costume design and music composing are the most important effect to make a good movie ... but the acting is the utmost importance of all.
Daniel Day Lewis is a wonderful actor. He won 3 Oscars for his movie best actor. He was awesome in Last of Mohicans, with Madeline Stowe years back. Haven't seen this movie yet, hope they have it on T.V. Didn't know till now they made it.
Where have you been for the last 26 years. That was released in 1993.
God blesses USA and Abraham Lincoln.
This is the best movie about Lincoln I've ever seen, DDL and Sally Field are two of the best actors in the business. One of Spielberg's best films among others. Americans need another Lincoln in office today, he had a hard life but rose up and overcame, one of our greatest presidents in history
And he was Welsh- Khumry. He has very holy and noble ancestry in Wales.
Ok, Tommy Lee Jones! Love to you from a fellow San Antonian! 😂❤️
And DDL is no slouch, either!
Sally is the BEST! Thank you, Spielberg!
Aw man... they should've just done an HBO miniseries of Tony Kushner's full script... I loved Lincoln and the story to pass the 13th amendment but there are SO many interesting aspects and events that occurred during his life, I think it would've done better than the film
I love that Doris K. G. got a tour of the set.
This film showed how tough a politician Lincoln was, the war was a terrible war and yet Lincoln could still see the long term goal of making slavery a thing in the past.
My goodness, what a great movie. What a great man.
One of the best behind the scenes I’ve watched
Also, Lewis cant even describe, you think how could he top Bill the Butcher? Then you see there will be blood and you say there is his "Sgt Peppers and Abbey road" all in the same bag. This was his best performance hands down and he did it without the benefit of madness, anger, or eccentricities of previous characters. Jones was excellent, you hated sally fields so she did her job. The surprises Jackie earl Haley he looked like the confederate VP Alexander Stephens. His face spoke a lot more than his dialogue. My favorite character was played by James Spader. I cant remember his name but he was a sort of lobbyist. He provided the brevity in this movie.
+chuck xjarhed Spader played William Bilbo, the only main character of whom no likenesses, portraits or photographs, were found by researchers. Spader had only letters Bilbo had written to Seward upon which to build the character. The only thing he was able to find out about Bilbo in terms of physical appearance was that he liked nice clothes. Spader's character is a great example of creating a plausible person by extrapolating from a basis of sparse factual knowledge.
i agree, the choice of Jackie Earle Hailey as Alexander Stephens was a master stroke...he really looked the part and it was a small role but he spoke his lines and conducted himself perfectly. great acting job on his part
The likenesses to the people portrayed in this movie is simply stunning. If there is/was an Oscar for casting, this movie deserved it.
An Irish national sure went on an extraordinary journey and never came back the same :)
Thank you For This Wonderful Historic movie about one of America's most beloved Presidents, Mr Lincoln
Hal Holbrook is best so far in sandburgs
I believe the movie should have been named, 'The Thirteenth Amendment'.
@George Pete You must have lots of friends with that personality.
I agree that for someone hoping for a real focus on Lincoln himself in some of the most electrifying moments of the time, this movie can be disappointing. In a way, the real protagonist is the 13th with Lincoln as the vehicle to bring it about. It could have been a much more "fun" movie than it was. I get why Spielberg felt this was an important movie to make but I've wondered if he wouldn't have had a greater impact if he'd made it more accessible to a wider audience.
It indeed is a masterpiece of film and seriously underrated. Everyone should see it. One small element that makes the film what it is; they allowed Daniel Day Lewis to show the introspective part of his personality. They allowed the audience to see him spending time in thought. The “dead time” becomes SO important to understanding the character and empathizing the moment.
He was also willing to give black soldier certain benefits like a college education.
This is a touching, moving, memorable, haunting film. Thank you, D Day Lewis, S Spielberg, S. Fields & everyone associated. The Mary Todd House in my home town is a marvelous place to visit!!
The gift of this movie and the actors that were involved, will live on for ever!!
No wonder the US is so magnificent ❤❤❤❤❤❤
