I was given one of these lovelies when I was 10 - I left him with mum and dad when I got married and moved to a flat at 22 - he lived for 16 years - after I left home he became my father's shadow. I took care of his grooming whilst at home - not sure professional groomers were very common back in the 60's - I would sit on the steps of the front porch and comb his beautiful sable and white coat - I'd fill a large bag with his fur. His white bib would glisten like silver in the sun and his fur was like silk. He was an extremely gentle, loving and intelligent dog - hie was happiest when the four of us would sit down for dinner and he could sprawl under the table and touch each of us with one of his extremities - his herding instinct fully satisfied. So many beautiful memories and I still shed a few tears when I think of him all these decades later - he was my childhood best friend and my protective brother.

Your story reminds me of my sweet boy Gabe… he was my angel and my very best buddy… I found him laying in a cardboard box in a Walmart parking lot when I was in college… I took him home with me after going right back into walmart and buying him a bed, some toys and some puppy food… the next day I took him to my uncle who is a vet and got him his shots, dewormed and a flea treatment… Gabriel was a collie/lab mix and a beautiful, sweet sweet boy who followed me everywhere I went… I took him everywhere with me… at night when I went to work, he went with me and slept out in my truck … I went out on my breaks and lunch to let him out to go to the bathroom… after I got married in 2000 he was still my best buddy… my husband once said, "I swear you love that dog more than you love me." I jokingly replied, "it’s not that I love him more… I’ve just loved him longer." 😂 Gabe crossed the rainbow bridge when he was 15 years old… he has been gone for 14 years and I still miss him to this day… I have a 14 year old Bull mastiff named Aliyah and I buried her brother, Hotch last month… he was also 14…I got him a month after Gabriel passed away… I was so grief stricken that my husband drug me to the OKC Animal Shelter and told me to go pick someone out… I came out with a little yellow lab/whippet that I named Hotch…. He was a special boy too… all of my dogs are special in their own way… I miss him very much and she’s a tear every time I think about him and Gabe… it's not fair that they only get to spend so little time here with us …

This is why I shaved my 10 yo rough collies. When they spend most of their life laying down and can’t stand for even a basic brushing it’s not about their coat or their looks it’s about keeping them comfortable and clean. (Mine also had periodic seizures and cleaning a long coat on a dog who can’t stand is difficult on everyone). They lived to be just months short of being 12.

My family had a rough collie in lighter coloring, actually extremely similar to Lassie from TV. She was also a good bit bigger than Abbie, but she loved baths - and hated being brushed. She lived to 11, 12 years old after doing an escape-artist move at 4 or 5 and then running into the street, where she got hit, necessitating a hip replacement. That hip was the *only* part that didn't hurt when she aged. She eventually could not walk around the house or play at all in the yard. I choose to remember her as the brown and white blur able to leap clear over a full size bed.

They didn't tell me, but I could see from the way they were acting and watching her that something had happened. Sure enough, the next day she couldn't stand which led to a series of vet visits and her eventual end. That was 3 years ago and I've never taken another dog to them. Had they just told me I would have understood, she was old and infirm and I'm sure she fought with them, but I think they felt they had to deny it or be held liable.

This reminds me of Tucker my folks dog,and my best friend who passed away last summer. Rough Collies I freaking adore so many great companions and have wonderful personalities. He was so crazy smart he taught himself how to open doors so on more than one occasion I would have have a light night vistor.

Good girl, Abby. You've made many of us proud today. ❤ I have a real soft spot for elderly dogs. They're still young at heart but with a body that's no longer the same. I think that's why so many feel so sad when they see an older dog. We see the pup in their eyes, but their legs don't really cooperate anymore. It's also sad they don't live nearly as long as most humans. The world would be a better place if dogs lived to be at least 30. ❤

Abby is a gorgeous Rough Collie ❤ and she was a little nervous during the bath time of the grooming session, but as the rest of the groom progresses she was getting better after you tightened the collar part of the lead while you were trying to blow dry her 😊 The calming toan of your voice and the gentle touch of your hands and heart ❤️ allowed Ms Abby to relax and allow you to finish her grooming session with a wonderful outcome ❤😊❤ Abby might be a 10 year old lady that has mobility issues, but she's still a beautiful Old Dame that represents the Rough Collie Breed ❤😊❤ Thank You Vanessa For Everything You Do For All The Animals ❤🐾🐾❤ and Owners that come to you for Help ❤😊❤😊❤😊❤😊❤

Collie, from Scottish "colley" = "black", as the first dogs were of black color.
They can weigh about 29kg, but mostly they are medium-sized (max 61cm for males, 56cm for females). Plus extremely long coat is not suited for herding (we don't see them working, but border collies we do).
So I would say this dog is very close to the ideal working type.

Ever since I was a child I have always loved collies. That’s thanks to Lassie. When I was in my 40’s my husband and I got two collies; a sable girl we named Chelsea and a tri-colour boy we named Churchill. They were the joy of our lives. They were both over 70 lbs with gigantic, beautiful coats that I groomed myself. My husband used to take them for long walks and the whole neighborhood would come out to greet them. Especially the kids. They have all passed now, including my loving husband. I hope he’s spoiling them rotten somewhere peaceful. 😊😢

My uncle and cousins had a "rough collie." I didn't - nor did they - know that's what he was. Gosh he was a good doggie. Wicked smart. Super good dog. Toward the end of his life he started running sheep on a neighboring farm. Some part of his instinct to herd them went awry and he killed a few of them. He was shot. Bout broke my heart when I learned this. RIP old Sam. You were kind to a little girl.

I'm so glad that my doggo (a rat terrier) is a short haired heavy shedder and that he likes getting showers in my bathtub. I frequently give him a shower when I get a shower myself. Luckily, he dries himself off after I put a towel on the floor and on the bed and he just goes snuffling and rolling in the towels till he's dry enough (and I'm dressed) and then he wraps up into a blanket on the bed with me for an after shower snooze (because I have several severe chronic illnesses and I get easily fatigued after minimal exertion).

I take my Great Pyr to the vet for a nail trim every 3 to 4 months because I am concerned that he would grow extended nail quicks. It also keeps him accustomed to visiting the Vet and the Staff. And the Vet does an excellent job. Costs less than $20 per visit.
