  • In a pointed speech from the Senate floor this month, the majority leader, Chuck Schumer, called for Israel to hold a new election and for voters to oust the prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
    Soon after, Annie Karni, a congressional correspondent for the Times, sat down with Mr. Schumer to understand why he did it.
    Guest: Annie Karni (www.nytimes.com/by/annie-karni) , a congressional correspondent for The New York Times.
    Background reading:
    • Mr. Schumer, America’s highest-ranking Jewish elected official, said he felt obligated to call for new leadership in Israel (www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/us...) .
    • His speech was the latest reflection of the growing dissatisfaction among Democrats (www.nytimes.com/2024/03/14/us...) with Israel’s conduct of the war in Gaza.

      Yes, well YOU try to work out how to do that when HAMAS uses these citizens as human shields in schools, hospitals, on the ground and below the ground. Gazans chose these terrorists as their government, have done nothing I know of to elect a different government in decades, despite Hamas leaders stealing food, medical aid, provided by Israel and other countries and even trying to keep Gazans from leaving war zones, to safer areas. The world needs to stop blaming Israel for a war HAMAS planned for and executed. Unfortunately HAMAS uses the meager education system to build hate against Israel. The US needs to stop pushing a two state solution that no one in the Middle East wants, what egoism! Israel is not the keeper of GAZA and is not responsible for the care and feeding of Gazans. Where the hell is the UN? Where are other Arab nations? The US needs to push Iran to stop all aid to HAMAS. Only Arab countries that support the fact that Israel has a right to exist should be involved in the restructuring of Gazans. I am no fan of Netanyahu, but Schumer’s and Biden’s desires for a two state solution are simply a lack of understanding the reality that it will take generations to repair relations between Palestinians and Israelíes and only the participation of friendly Arab countries and Israel will make this happen, person to person. I would start with small projects, and peace making as part of every educational system.

    This was a great and needed speech. I worry how the actions of Israel will put all Jews in harms way. Israel will never be safer than the United States for Jews and these crimes place the great Jewish people in harms way. Unfortunately, these are just words absent policy changes and ending our toxic friendship and toxic role in perpetuating this long conflict. Sometimes you have to tell your friends to not have another drink... They have had too much and can't drive. In the end this government will capitulate. And the problem goes beyond netanyahu...israel society is changing for the worse and most of the population support these massacres. Its nonsense to focus on netanyahu alone.

Schumer, the M.S.M. and talking-heads ignore the fact the majority of the population there and most if not all the cabinet members including the self-admitted neo-fascists in Bibi's government actively support of Bibi's actions in the strip. They will replace Bibi with another like-minded Prime Minister minus all the baggage that Bibi has. Business in the strip will thus continue mostly as usual.

    It's ignorant to assume that Bibi is somehow replaceable with a "more reasonable" leader or something. Most Israelis (even the ones who dont like Bibi) support the Gaza operation. Bibi is himself seen as a moderate Right Winger there, not a rabid Zionist bigot. His views regarding a future Palestinian State (or lack thereof) are shared by most Israelis. Americans Jews are scapegoating Netanyahu when their real problem is with the worldview of the Israeli people.

And boy, was he correct. A quick look at Israeli social media channels are absolutely bone chilling to behold. Frightening. How old are you? Perhaps you don't know the history of the 20th century. We saw the anti-Jewish ethno-nationalists seeking to genocide Jews. Millions of Jews died and the world had to ensure they had a homeland. That came with problems and displacement of Palestinians after they lost a series of wars. And we never achieved stability but we learned to say " Never again" to the genocide of Jews. Hence Israel will get tremendous support from the Western governments. Unfortunately moderate Israelis have been killed and disenfranchised and radical elements on both sides have gained power by promoting a toxicity between the Palestinians and Israelis. Then Israel was normalising relations with all Arab countries other than Iran and so Hamas was losing its relevance. Therefore it sought to create so much bloodshed that it couldn't be ignored...

      It is not about saving jews. The Israelie secret service can do things that are not possible in the U.S. (or they would be risky). When Reagan had a deal with the mullahs of Iran (so they would not release the hostages before the election, so the sitting president Carter would not have that success - Israel helped to supply the U.S. weapons (and spare parts) to Iran.
      The help to Israel helps with the foreign policy objectives of the U.S. (at least in the past). And also: some of the big donors that finance Dems and Repubs really like them. They are indirect subsidies for the U.S. military industrial complex. Israel gets the money - and turns around and buys U.S. weapons.
      And of course the Israeli lobby works the representatives, so they will be in their favour.

    Schumer's speech is a total contradiction because he and other Americans simply do not understand the culture that is present on the ground in Palestine and Israel. Schumer calls himself a "guardian," yet then relieves himself of any responsibility for Israeli elections, as he should since it is not his place to intervene. So, basically, the speech is just a bunch of unproductive words. He states obvious points that probably most people agree with, but the timing of the speech and making it at all was totally misplaced. He can say whatever he wants because the Israelis do rely on American weaponry and financial aid, but if it ever came to it, I think the Israelis would survive without any support from America. They have spent decades investing in themselves and getting tech-billionaires to more than double investments in Israel over the last decade, so I think the Israelis will do just fine so long as other countries do not abandon their support for the Israelis, and of course I know Schumer was insinuating this exact point - that Israel's actions in Gaza risk Israel becoming more isolated in the world.
    I hope that Schumer remembers that after the October 7th massacre, El Al airlines could not handle the number of people purchasing plane tickets to fly to Israel and fight in Gaza FOR FREE, VOLUNTARILY. Any sane person would listen to Schumer's speech and say, "Okay.... so what do you suggest Israelis do?" If Schumer had lived in Israel for an extended period of time, he would either not have gone into politics (having realized that politics is the problem, and sadly he is just a cog in that wheel of a problem), or if he had gone into politics, he would have taken more right-wing positions on Israel. And, that is one of the first things we need to point out: What "left wing" and "right wing" mean in the United States is changing more radically ever day - left and right is up and down now. We do not have firm definitions of these terms, and I think ultimately that will be a good thing if we can destroy the very binary system that has been enslaving us for years. Now, as far as left and right-wing in Israel, these are not terms with the same meaning for Israeli voters. It is because Israelis have a Parliament-like coalition system that they are actually closer to behaving more democratically than Americans. Democracy works better in countries with relatively small populations, not to mention more humble geographic borders. Take New Zealand, for example. If you gave me 1 million dollars and said, "Choose one country you will be Prime Minister of for the next 4 years," I would choose New Zealand. Just take a look at a globe: the enormity of the Americas and the much smaller size of Israel couldn't be clearer. Furthermore, there are roughly 330 million Americans and roughly 9 million Israelis. These differences have a real impact on how politics embeds itself within the culture of any nation.
    It makes me sad because I've commented harshly on Chuck Schumer's decision to give this speech, but the truth is I actually like and admire Schumer. I believe he is a role model for so many American Jews as a public figure with a good track record as a legislator. I believe he does have Israelis' interests at heart, and you can tell that he genuinely cares about the Jewish state when push comes to shove. The problem we all have to contend with is that politics just gets in the way of true diplomacy. And as much as Schumer advocates for the need for 2 States for 2 Peoples or some kind of sovereign Palestinian state existing next to Israel, he is advocating for a fantasy that so many others are in support of. The very people Schumer is advocating for have not taken legitimate and mature actions to show the rest of the world that statehood is the end-goal, the absolute reason to stay in the "fight." Unfortunately, there are still many people in Palestine who are enabling a death cult to terrorize and derail any attempt at sovereign statehood. On top of that, Khaled Mashal and other Hamas leaders have been completely vocal about their opposition to a "2 State Solution." Why is Schumer choosing to ignore this and instead address Netanyahu directly? Unless Schumer does not know that Hamas doesn't want 2 states, but I think that would be giving Mr. Schumer the benefit of a very big doubt.....And since he does know Hamas's platform, I hate to say his speech was for nought, but I think that it was.

    • @tb8865
      @tb8865 2 месяца назад

      American Jews do not want to accept the reality that ethnic cleansing/genocide or permanent apartheid are the only real options Israel has, so people like Schumer (most politicians really) talk about the 2 state solution as if it is possible. They do not want to publicly attach themselves to a country with policies at variance with their domestic base and so they divert attention from the reality on the ground and blame radicals on both sides for an intractable political problem. But the problem would exist even if Hamas were somehow eliminated and Netanyahu gone. American Jews want Israel but governed by "nice" Zionists they can sell to liberals when there is no mood for that among Israelis.
