    Now that I'm building a TT:120 model railway, it seems like a good idea to review some of the locos available in the scale. Up first is the Hornby LNER A4 "William Whitelaw" in the early BR Green livery. This loco was part of The Easterner starter set so it's one of the most common TT:120 models out there and for a lot of people will be their first experience with the scale.
    So how does it stack up in comparison to its larger 00 gauge counterparts? Are the Hornby TT:120 models on the same level, are they geared more towards the Railroad market or do they sit somewhere in between? Watch on to find out!

    The level of detail incorporated into Hornby’s TT:120 range is quite outstanding. Having a scale correct gauge track and chassis on locos etc has really helped the balanced look of models too. The HM DCC decoders and App make DCC really accessible for anyone, you can change so much so easily without a Degree in DCC or expensive equipment and any changes are simple to reset.

      Absolutely, I definitely think the combination of TT:120 and HM7000 is a good one and great for beginners just starting out in the hobby who are more used to using their phones/devices as a means of control. Thanks for watching 😃

    Overall, I think they did a smashing job on it, both in appearance and running quality. I'd be delighted to have one (or two!) in my collection. Here's hoping they can do as good a job with some of the smaller locos like a Jinty or 57xx and such. So far, TT:120 looks like a great option for space conscious modelers.

      They do seem to have taken what they know from making 00 gauge models and have essentially scaled down the same practices. I think a Jinty or 57XX are a little way off yet but we do have the J50 coming later this year. Thanks for watching 😃

    Worth noting that in newer versions of this A4, Hornby have corrected the whistle and flat roof where the cab meets the body.

      @@PlatformONE I believe that’s how the lining was in reality. You can see they’ve done the same on the 00 gauge model I compared the TT model to and this matches up to the real life A4s… at least the preserved ones in similar liveries.

      I fixed the cab myself when mine arrived last year. Took the body off (be careful of the speedo link which has to be detached from the wheel) and some gentle pressure sorted the cab out. I also chose to turn the whistle the other way up: I just feel it looks better that way even though the problem is that it's not formed correctly (not simply fitted upside down).

    This was my first TT model and my first A4. I was blown away by the detail and the model quality, I'm looking forward to adding more locos, my next intended purchase is the Castle Class.

    wow, the side by side comparison tells everything. Detail is still great, and it's so much smaller. The perfect scale for anyone dealing with space limitations.

      Yeah I was surprised at how well they stack up against each other side by side. Obviously Hornby are well versed at making A4s now but even so these new TT locos certainly aren't Railroad models! Thanks for watching 😃

    Seeing these models in action at the Statfold Model Railway event on the Hornby magazine layout shows how good the models look and perform. Only downside is the lack of models being out on the market. But knowing what is happening globally with supply and demand from china it seems quite a few manufacturers are in the same situation.

    Great review, my loco had a derailing problem and like you said it's because of a black piece of tape under the front bogey. Looking forward to the next video.

      Good to know that fix actually works then! Mine doesn't derail, the pony just lifts up occasionally on one side so I'm hoping I've got away with these tight curves after all. Thanks for watching 😃

    Thanks for the review! It seems to be a really good model. I just don't understand, why Hornby left the distance between loco and tender this big. And also the coupling distance seems big. Especially, since Hornby's own brand Arnold does a much better job in this on their European TT models.

      Yes, maybe. The curves on Tillig's track system have the same radius. Their 23cm double-deck coaches can make R2, but of course this looks even more odd than it does with the 16cm British coaches.

    TT:120 gauge is ideal for 3ft narrow gauge in OO scale, if smaller wheelbase steam locos are made I can see some being used for such a project.

      Yes I had considered that too. Although it would very much be a niche scale piggybacking off another niche scale so unlikely for any major manufacturers to support it. But like you said, I'm sure with a suitable chassis and 3D printer, someone could have a pretty good stab at something! Thanks for watching 😃

    Hi. Great review - just clear and factual. One thing I am confused about. If you use the Hornby Bluetooth app and decoders to control the sounds and movement of the locos what power supply is used to the track - is it just DC? I am coming back into modelling and am looking at tt:120 but want to run several locos at the same time so the Bluetooth system Hornby have looks like an easy way and relatively cheap easy way to do that?

      Hiya, so there's two main options. You can either use DCC power which gives you the option of using HM7000 and normal decoders together (this is great if you already have an existing set of models).
      The other option is to use the Hornby 15v 4amp power supply (or similar) wired direct to the track which is a much cheaper way of doing it but it does lock you in to using the HM7000 decoders exclusively. But it's a great option for beginners like yourself.
      I don't think DC is recommended as the HM7000 decoders don't like some controllers. Thanks for watching 😃

    As the chuff rate has been mentioned, it takes less than a minute to switch to a more realistic throttle response and chuff-rate. Click Locomotive Settings, Adv. CV Editor and click on CV 29. Select the number 16 so the background is light grey. Click Exit. That is it - you can return to the Control page.
    This brings in a speed table to give finer control over the locomotive and the "chuff" sound. I cannot tell you why this is not the default setting.

      This is really one of the big advantages of the HM7000 system that I don't think gets talked about enough. It really is so simple for anyone to change the CVs that adjusting the chuff rate or the acceleration/deceleration is a 30 second job. Thanks for watching 😃

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy I checked the HM7000 web site FAQs, and in response to a question on whether the cadence can be changed it says "Sound profiles are FREE but cannot currently be altered in any form." I'm not aware of any sound decoder that allows you to change from 2-cylinder to 3-cylinder with just a CV change. Your review here seems kinda shallow.

      The actual sounds cannot be altered but, as was explained above, the CV settings that control how often the chuff sound plays can be adjusted to better match the wheel rotation. This is a standard feature for pretty much any DCC sound decoder. Again, as you can see from the instructions kindly provided above, this is a quick job with the HM7000 decoders.

      @@ThatModelRailwayGuy Again, chuff rate is not the same as cadence. A two cylinder loco goes CHUFF chuff CHUFF chuff. A three cylinder loco goes ChunkadaChunkada. Either can go fast or slow (rate) , but you can't change one to the other (cadence) . It sounds as if nobody's paid attention to how a Gresley Pacific actually sounds or doesn't care. High end US or German sound systems do reproduce this.

    Looks really good apart from the cab roof, should be flush with the boiler. Cab seems to be a separate moulding, fit doesn't look that good.

    I feel the wheel flanges on the a4/3 are disproportionately large compared to n gauge or oo. Means the main driving wheels seem a little small and too far apart. Not sure if this is just on this chassis or will be a gauge standard across future models but now I notice it, it sticks out.

      I can't say I noticed it in particular myself. I suspect Hornby are aiming this range at more casual enthusiasts who want trains to run smoothly so the larger flanges will probably help avoid derailments on a wider range of track. That's just my theory anyway. Thanks for watching 😃

    Question about the DCC control. I'm in the States and thinking of getting either this set or the Scotsman. I am reading you don't need special equipment correct to access the functions? Just the APP? I really appreciate your review. Best one I've seen yet!

      There's a difference between DCC and the HM7000 system that uses the app. With conventional DCC you need a base station that provides power and command to the track (this is often the expensive bit).
      With the HM7000 system the commands go direct from your phone to the locomotive using bluetooth so you can power the track from a suitable 15v-4amp transformer without needing a base station. You are limited to using only HM7000 decoders in this instance though.

    I think the A4 is a great example of what hornby can achieve, looks just as good as the 00 model, and it sounds well for a smaller gauge loco 😀

    I’m still on the fence about which scale to go with. The limited locomotives currently available really goes against TT, but since it’ll likely be a while before I can afford to buy locos, maybe it’ll be okay…

      It depends what locos you want really but by the end of this year we should have 8 different models available in TT:120. You certainly wouldn't need all of them to start a layout but if you want to build a Southern branchline (for example) you might be waiting a while. Thanks for watching 😃

      I think the Terrier is a good shout for when they get round to some Southern locos. But the other two are less likely since they don't have modern CAD designs for those locos (at least to our knowledge). Thanks for watching 😃

      Some modellers are going towards hunt magnetic couplings for some of their rolling stock. The one N layout I help out at exhibitions uses hunt couplings for all the carriages to get the closer coupling look.

      Depends what areas you're looking at but I don't get that feeling at all. Hornby have produced some brilliant high quality models in 00 over the last few years and there's nothing to suggest they would let the quality slip for TT, especially given how popular it's already been.       Triang TT is different to TT:120 in the same way the H0 is different from 00. The track gauge is the same but put the models side by side and the size difference is pretty obvious. This is the first time TT:120 has been done in the UK.

    Function 16. Must have been an awful lot of unhealthy fat drivers/firemen on BR back then as the soundfile makers have decided😂

      Even with preserved line working a locomotive will consume 3 to 4 tons of coal a day. I do not recall seeing any over-weight firemen. They earned their fried egg and bacon.
      F16 though could have been used for something more useful such as station ambience.

      There are limits to what you can coax out of a small speaker enclosure but I think HM7000 sound is worth getting. I base this opinion on my experience with The Scotsman set - which is an excellent starting point in my opinion. If improved sounds are released there is no cost to upgrading. It is also easy to adjust the CVs if you are not happy with parameters. I have no regrets about paying the extra for Bluetooth control and sound.

      I note the sound has a 2-cylinder rhythm, while 3-cylinder locos have a triplet musical cadence. This is noticeable to anyone who has heard a 3-cylinder prototype.

    There's nothing new about TT Scale.
    Triang introduced it in the late 50s, early 60s.
    It flopped then & it will flop again.

      I really don't get the unwarranted hostility towards TT at all, it's all a bit "kids throwing their toys out of the pram" vibes 😂
      Obviously I don't have a crystal ball so no-one knows how the scale will do in the future. But right now TT is doing just fine, some would even say it'll doing quite well given how popular it's been so far. There's no indication of it being a flop anytime soon... and TT:120 is different from Triang TT anyway.

      The version of TT manufactured by Triang 60 years ago, is a completely different scale and resolution to the TT:120 range Hornby has adopted. For the first time RTR UK outline railway modelling has a correct scale range that is also internationally compatible. Making negative comments based on inaccurate information is not a good look and doesn’t sit well in the hobby. All are welcome 😁👍

      I agree, if someone isn't interested in TT:120 that's absolutely fine but I don't understand why people are getting so worked up about it. Build a layout or run some trains in a scale you do enjoy... it doesn't matter whether TT exists or not, you're not forced to pay any attention to it.
      I don't remember people going after Heljan and Bachmann like this when they moved into 009... and Bachmann's new NG7 range has had a generally positive reaction too.
