Being alone is not being lonely. I loved my time when I traveled alone, but never questioned that it was in pain, troubled, or being sad because I was alone. In fact, I was happy with my stillness, my quiet time to think, to read, and to reflect. Now that I am with my family, I still find time for the quiet time and inner peace. I love my wife and family, but I love myself too. A very good call on your status of being happily alone (sans Sadie), because you have faith in yourself. That’s happiness. Be safe and be careful Carolyn.

MY LIFE IS MY OWN...that says it all Marcia 🙂In my younger years I was in a few really bad long-term relationships (yes, I stayed longer than I should have, tried to "make it work" because I thought I was doing something wrong) & ended them because I finally woke up and wasn't going to settle for being hit or treated like a doormat anymore. After I'd been alone for a few years because I had major trust issues, I finally realized that I absolutely loved not having to answer to anyone, doing what I wanted when I wanted without "checking in" constantly. And it was just amazing to me, having that kind of freedom.
Every time a girlfriend of mine would be fighting with her boyfriend I would feel so blessed that I didn't have to have that kind of drama in my life anymore. It's not worth it. My aunt used to say to me just find a man & get married (even if I didn't love him), you're not going to find a prince charming, you're not cinderella lol. She was married her entire life, 2 marriages (first one ended in divorce) & miserable the whole time because she hated "taking care of him" (sad imo, it's called taking care of each other I thought) & I just always said to myself "I sure don't want that" I mean seriously. I've always hated drama (my aunt raised me so u can see why). I just turned 58, been alone for years now & I'm happier than I've ever been. Great comment Marcia, I absolutely love that. Thank u :-). My Life Is My Own.💜

Same here. I went from 1 relationship to another my whole life , married at 16 divorced at 21. He was a farmer and drank and beat me almost daily. I had another guy waiting for me, and ended up marrying him at 28. We got along great until we married, so I divorced him. I had another long term realationship until I caught him cheating, then like an idiot met a guy and we got married. We had 2 kids together, and he went out drinking and playing in his band and rode his Harley around with other Women. My youngest turned 18, and I left him. Now I am divorced for 5 years and about to turn 65. I love being alone for the first time in my life, and plan to be for the rest of my life. I have a Minnie Winnie and my dog and I are gone exploring and camping all Summer long. My Husky doesn't talk back, and he appreciates me more than any of those Aholes ever did. You know, having backpacked with Carolyn before she became a RUclips star, for four days with two other guys, I find this amusing. We all adored her. The idea that she might be unappealing to men is hilarious. The real issue, as with a lot of us older folk who have accomplished a lot and become unique individuals, is finding someone with compatible uniqueness. And that, in turn, is a matter of divine grace (aka luck and a prepared mind).

I have finally got my self esteem back and my worth. I will not ever marry or date again! I have had my shots against men! I admire what you have talked about regarding yourself, and I understand! Also I too have a companion. She's a little five year old female shihrzu named Monet. I have a good relationship with my children and granchildren. I am a Christian, so I have a special relationship with my creator and I put my trust in Him . Most of the life questions that concern my spirit I am at peace , I can honestly say, I am happy at 67 years old. Probably too much info, lol, I just like you as a person and admire your tenacity! I quit using the word alone because it carries a negative connotation. Like you have a void in you life, your heart ,your soul or even your toe. Lol. Instead I say, ask, state or exhibit. "I am on my Own." This has a positive connotation. A strong and proud tone resonates in these three words -On My Own- with no void lingering. When someone asks me do I live alone, I answer, I live on my own. Do you like being alone, I answer, I like being on my own. It puts things at ease and just works. Carolyn, You are Woman and that is just fine. Thanks for being true to yourself and us. 🙂

Hi. I'm not judging Carolyn. I tune in because I like Carolyn and I'm interested in what goes into the RV way of living. I also like seeing the towns and scenery (I'm not in the US) I was trying to support her by saying it's her choice, and then separately, saying of people in general, let's not judge other people's choice to live as they wish, so it would be nice to mind our business regarding this. I hope that's a bit clearer. Live and let live basically.

I was the youngest of 7 and loved getting away from the chaos. I'm divorced 25yrs - was married 20. I have no desire to give up anymore years of my life to a male of my generation. Carrying ALL the child rearing tasks, all the cleaning & cooking, and scheduling my entire life around someone else. Many men of my generation are afraid to be alone. Lost their identity when they lost their work titles upon retiring. Had no plan for when their career ended. They want to stay home and not try new things OR SPEND MONEY BECAUSE IT MIGHT RUN OUT. I was traveling alone for five weeks. I was never afraid. I knew I was smart and was confident I could handle anything…and I did. It was the trip of a lifetime.
But I do have one fear. Only one. I’ve always said I’m not afraid to die. I am afraid to not get to LIVE before I die. Now I travel with my pets. Soon I will be traveling with three small dogs, three parrots and one old grumpy cat. My one fear is if I did die while traveling alone, what would happen to my animals? I only worry about what would happen to them. My sister always knows where I am and where I am headed. We talk every day at least once. So that is some consolation.

After deploying with 4,300 other sailors on my first ship, I suddenly found myself alone in London in 1987, separated from my "liberty buddy". I probably should have felt very alone and fearful of the unknown, but I felt quite the opposite - no one was gonna get me outta this but me, and I knew I could very much rely on my sense of self! Once again you struck a common chord! I was lucky enough to spend a good part of my life with my love and soulmate. Before he died in 2020, he wished me a life filled with adventure and happiness. For the last two years I’ve been solo…alone, but not lonely. I do have a “base camp” but I’ve spent about half of that time on the road in my little class C, with my copilot, Skippy (a Schipperke aka LBD - Little Black Devil). I’ve always been an introvert and often catch myself rolling my eyes at people who assume I’m lonely and spend way too much of their time speculating about why I don’t spend more time with family, or friends or social groups. I’m 70 years old. I HAD the love of my life. I don’t need another one. I don’t do small talk…I just kinda get a blank look on my face and wish I was anywhere but in that moment. The word SISU (pronounced See Sue) is a Finnish word that roughly translates to strength of will, determination, bravery, resilience and grit. I’d add fierce independence to that. That pretty much describes me. I’ll be back on the road this week and I’m already dodging questions about where, when and how my trip will progress. NEWS FLASH! I don’t KNOW! I’m just going to get out there and let my life happen! I’ll take the surprises, disappointments and challenges as they come, but it won’t be as part of a caravan or with a human sidekick. Skippy and I will do just fine and I will be channeling your independence and appreciation of living life your way, Carolyn, every mile of my journey! Keep inspiring. #BHBFBK!

I am soon to be 59 and have never been married or had children which I struggled with for many years as I watched close friends marrying and starting families. I am an only child and I learned how to be my own friend. I still assumed I would find 'Mr. Right,' marry, and start a family. People have admitted that when first meeting me the thought came to mind, "what's wrong with her?" Once they got to know me they no longer had that thought. As much as it did suck at times knowing my life was not the 'norm' by not adhering to social expectations as a woman fulfilling 'my duty' I will say that I would rather have it this way than to have experienced unhealthy relationships.

Right now, I don't want to think about when I can't live this independent life that I have come to love. I too am an introvert. Many cannot understand why I am living as I am. Why would I choose to live like this. Most days everything is good, others not so much , but I have lived on my own, renting, like my friends. I became so much more accomplished and regained my self worth after divorcing , graduated from college at night as a single parent, and became and still am the person I’m very proud to be at 74 years old. I once had a guy I hired to do some work say to me at the end of the day, “Your a good looking women, why aren’t you married”. I looked at this generally unemployed guy, no homeownership future, who was really stumped about me….a women with a waterfront house, new car, good job and yes, very attractive when that seemed to matter. Anyway, I said “Well, so far I haven’t found anyone who is as interesting, as self confident as me in a non ego way, and is kind. You know ….someone my equal.” He just stared like he didn’t have a clue what I was talking about. Men just don’t get it. In Politics as well we see this blindness as it is their fear. “We need to control these women”. Men, relax. A good women is one who values herself and like you, doesn’t need anyone to control them. Just love and enjoy, please.

In a more perfect world, women and men wouldn't have to explain their lifestyle choices. I know it would be difficult for me to be in a serious relationship after having to only worry about myself for so long. I've always said I was meant to be a long haul truckers wife. If I ever get a van together, I know it won't bother me to be alone.

I too am an introvert by nature. I feel best when I have significant amounts of alone time. My parents were married for 47 years before my dad passed away and my mom said to me, she had been married all of her adult life since she was 16. She didn't know how to not be married. Yet, she struggled through it for 20 years before she passed away and honestly she never was truly happy after my dad was gone. So, I was raised with that mentality of "you need to have someone to be happy". My mom never understood my embrace of solitude. I'm like you, I'm not closed off to the idea of a life partner, but I have not yet met anyone who inspires me to want to compromise my personal space and enjoyment. I've been in good relationships of sorts, bad relationships and toxic relationships, and (hopefully) grown through them, and now I value myself, my peace of mind, my peace of spirit, and haven't yet met anyone that can complement that focus so I prefer to be alone. 😎.
I've given it a lot of thought over the years. I see many, many relationships built on "need", and only a small amount built on true respect and enjoyment of each other. I won't settle for less that the latter.

Over the years I have found out that so many men think a woman have to depend on them for so many things: like finance, lean on, protection, under their control and make decisions. A real man wouldn't think of a woman like that. A lot of men think you can't make it without them. Especially if a woman don't make good money. I suggest a woman be independent before a man find them. Never chase a man. Let him go.

There are two distinct groups of people on this planet. One group would prefer to be dead than alone. Then, there are those like myself, who are not sure whether being alone is an earned privilege or simply a gift from the heavens above. Either way, for us, the introverts, our aloneness is revered and appreciated. I'll prefer to spend my time with the person who truly appreciates and understands me.

Kinda love this…..’a gift from the heavens’. And yes, someone that understands this is a gem and stands above the crowd.

Carolyn, I love this video! Well said - so much you brought up that does not get discussed about women and our society’s pressure to not be alone

Thank you Carolyn! I am 61 and have been alone since 2011. Fast forward to today and I am proud to say that I am an independent, strong and determined woman that is fully embracing single life. My children are grown and I am now retired. I have converted a cargo van and started travelling solo and love it! So many people just don't understand that I truly am happy even though I don't have a partner. I am not opposed to, and am even open to meeting someone. I recognize that I am not, however, willing to lose myself, the growth, self respect and self love that I have come to realize in my journey of reacquainting myself with me :)
