I'm a Canadian who has recently retired, but I have walked a similar path in life. My father was a good hearted person, but he had a drinking problem and I grew up in a house without running water and central heating for several years. Thankfully, I never went hungry and I was never abused. My relatives were very judgmental which was challenging at times. My father taught me how to be an autobody repairman and I was able to purchase my first new car when I was 16 years old. I worked many long hours in our garage and my high school marks were good so I saved my money and put myself through university. I graduated as an Engineer and moved across the country to start my new life. It was hard at first, but I soon realized how liberating it was to be surrounded by strangers. There were no relatives around who would gossip and judge me according to their standards. I had a demanding career and my life was stressful, but good. I bought things when I was in a comfortable position to afford them. Over time I became a it frugal, but I am comfortable with buying things when I feel that I can afford them. I'm a male and I am not into fashion but I prefer to buy reasonable quality items that last longer than cheaper stuff. Being retired provides a degree of freedom that I have never experienced in the past. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings in this video.

You're RV isn't junky, it's a solid rig with your character and expression permeating its structure. I really appreciate your self awareness and acceptance; it's really nice to see someone show it rather than just say it. Anytime someone judges me based on anything other than my character, I often realize it's a projection of people's profound dissatisfaction with the "American Dream" and it's almost like a "how dare you be free and yourself, when I'm trapped". That's just my experience anyway.
Thanks for being real and vulnerable, your down to earth nature and openness reaches the people it needs to; I know I appreciate it and it's a breath of fresh air.

Carolyn your story resonates with me so much, I was also raised by a single mom and spent a long time making up for the things I didn't have or thought I should have when I was a kid, and making sure my kids had everything they wanted and surprisingly they don't care about having a lot of stuff. Now in my 50's I don't care what anyone thinks and working hard to declutter and minimize. I just want to be out in nature. Less things = less stress. You are an inspiration to me and many. I've never thought your RV looked junky, and I always think your hair looks so cute in braids! Your skin is glowing! Way too many people out there hiding behind their keyboard.

We had a similar issue with our cabin on crown land. My grandparents and my father were the first lots to get the hundred year lease as well as our neighbor. Our family used the traditional saltbox building style that was popular in Newfoundland and our neighbors built an A-Frame. Ours was red, theirs was purple. We grew up there and knew everyone on the lake and were happy. All the original cottages were off grid and we were happy with that. then 25 years later, we got notices that we had six months to tear them down and build a new structure that suited the more fancier cottages that had been built later. We had to get the plans them approved and we had no choice or they were going to cancel our lease. The ones that were affected got together and used the same blueprints and built newer cottages but we had no choice but to put in hydro. That ruined everything. Everyone had the money to rebuild without going into debt, but since we were all happy the way things were we didn't see the reasoning behind it. Just a few weeks after our new builds, the area was struck by a fluke tornado and many of the fancier cottages around us were destroyed. Funny enough, all the "new builds" were missed. I called that tornado "Karma". You just be yourself Carolyn.

Ok....I’m gonna be 75 yrs old...and I definitely understand exactly what you’re saying. Took me years of being on my own..only child, very stern mother and grandmother, lost my sweet grandfather and dad at a young age (heart disease), single parent, helping to raise all 5 grandkids, working my butt off. Also fostered and rescued several non humans. I’m still feeding 14 feral cats (have been for 9 yrs..all tnrd), took in two stray cats (with some health issues) who were dumped a few years ago, there’s always fresh food and water out every day for the cats, opossums, raccoons (who come late at night), the squirrels and the bunny. I love them all. They trust me. What a wonderful feeling arises within my heart when I see trust in the eyes of a wild fur baby. And..some of these critters are quite spoiled...yet they all seem to get along.
Never remarried. Too busy...different priorities. Empathy, compassion and love is what matters to me. Acceptance of others (some adult humans...all non humans) and just being kind. Kindness is my religion. Nature is what grounds me.
I’m old, quirky, weaker and less healthy than I used to be. Emotionally, physically and financially drained...pretty much. But I’m still here.
Most humans, in my opinion, overthink, over analyze, theorize and are delusional and ignorant and quite nasty. I don’t know why. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I adore you....I agree with you. I salute you. Great rant. You’re so smart..wise...and I love your sweet fur baby, love you, love your RV, and have been watching you for a few years.
We’re all visitors here. We grow, we observe, we learn (hopefully), we change and we’re constantly evolving. I prefer hanging with non human critters...and a few young children in my neighborhood (my own grandkids are all grown up...busy...living their lives). But that’s just my opinion. Teaching young humans to be kind to all beings and to respect all beings is my thing. I remind them that our thoughts, perceptions, feelings and opinions come and go constantly. No need to dwell on any thought or emotion which doesn’t benefit our well being.
Buy the way, live in a tiny home...minimalist...my car is pretty old...but it works and I take care of it. Also took in my older grandson few yrs ago.....took in my older daughter and her cat after her divorce (few years ago). My home is comfy for me and my cats. I can’t clean constantly and keep up the way I used to do. I’m old...and I’m content...for the first time in my life. I’m a kind of loner...but I’m never lonely. Just a bit tired from experiencing life and coping with all the unpredictabilities of living my life.
I shop at Good Will and a thrift shop down the highway. And so do several other individuals. In this day and age..who can really afford new things? Feeding all these outside (and inside) critters is kinda tough, financially, but I do it.
Good for you! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Sending love and light to you...your fur baby...and to all beings who are doing the best they are able to survive in this weary, superficial world. 💖💖💖💫💫💫🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻.

As someone who's always been very interested in aesthetics, and has even had a career as a photographer at one point, I can see both sides to this. HOWEVER, your points are all extremely valid! Why spend money to wash a rig that's literally going to get just as dusty THE VERY NEXT DAY? That's $10 (or whatever) more for food so you can stay out longer. Why shower everyday when you have limited water carrying capacity AND NO ONE'S EVEN AROUND TO SMELL YOU??? Lol It's just sad that people can't seem to understand that Town Standards and Nature Standards are two totally different worlds. You become another version of yourself out there. When I camp in nature my feet are always dirty, I don't shower until I have to, no make up, no nothing. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy cleaning up, putting on something nice, curling my hair and doing makeup to go have a nice meal in a restaurant or something. The two are NOT mutually exclusive but people want to pretend they are. Sad we're not allowed to be more than one thing in this life.

I used to be obsessively house proud, certainly a natural progression of growing up in an alcoholic & abusive household (and gay on a farm in rural Illinois). I spent so much time, energy and money on making sure my house was ready for guests at any moment (I rarely had/have guests, introvert here) and all of those resources were squandered when I could've been better self served by focusing on other, more meaningful things. I now have a small apartment, not the nicest place --- but I have a kitchen full of food, I bake bread, I sleep in a cozy bed, I have all my books and it's home. And sometimes I wear my underwear more than once. I wish I'd found this happiness sooner, but I guess it came when it was meant to.
Finally, our words matter. It doesn't matter if we say them with our mouths or our hearts or if we speak them to ourselves or to others. What we put out there matters and that's why I just feel sorry for trolls. Their words are about them, not me or you or anyone else.
Sorry for the ramble. Adore you, Carolyn --- a strong, opinionated woman is a beautiful thing to behold! Peace! And enough is a feast!

After watching your video, I just cried. What you said about your childhood kind of mirrored mine (except my Dad was not psycho...hahahahah). I dealt with bullies plus racism when we moved to an all-white neighborhood in the South. Chasing "materialistic things" when I was older equated being a good and happy person. It took me a LONG time into my 50's to realize, I was living such a false life. I think that is why I gravitate towards your videos Carolyn.

*shrug* Watching the videos periodically, I've thought "how does she move around in there?" But, when your RV is your home, it's up to the homeowner to create their own environment.
It was a journey for me, when we bought our RV in 2014, in making it a 'home.' I remodeled soooo many times, trying to make it look like a home-home, and was never happy. Finally, there was the epiphany "this is a home in an RV, not a stix 'n brix." I tossed all the crap people on the RV boards said we HAD to HAVE, purged and streamlined and organized. This wasn't about living in an RV, it was about an RV life, which is vastly different than stationary life.
We're even planning to downsize in a few years, having bought into the original mantra "buy as BIG as you can afford! You'll need the space!" No we don't. We've grown more minimalist and have placed more importance on the kind of life RVing takes us to, not the obligation to carry a whole damned house on our backs.

I love it: "Carolyn's RV life is the island of misfit toys. We've all never fully fit in." You have a subscriber for life with that comment. Thank you for speaking out loud about the American dream-which is really just a "keeping up with the joneses" materialism that keeps us always dissatisfied, distracted and in debt. I was not taught to be responsible with money either-"indentured servitude" to the credit cards. Thankfully, we have a reawakening in our lives on what is important to us-and nature/wilderness, freedom from stuff, judgement, unnecessary shallow stress/pressures from society. You are very articulate! And thank you for mentioning "classism" in our society and for us women over 50-it's so refreshing to watch a channel with a strong, independent and outspoken woman who is living her own life.

Carolyn, this declaration of who you are and what you want out of life is the reason many of us watch your channel and support you.
I get what you're saying about saying 🖕🏼 to the "American dream!" I was not raised to value "things" and feel sorry for people who have been conditioned to value things more than people and life's experiences.
I was raised by a father who loved nature, and he passed that love on to me. I'm hoping that (before I get too old) I too can get on the road, at least for a while, and experience so much of our country that I have yet to experience.
Thank you for sharing your life and your experiences with us! 💚🚐

And I chased that outwardly "sucessful" life, much like you. But from a young age on, I rejected those values you are speaking of. Much to the chagrin of family and friends. I live in a small apartment in the midwest now, waiting for my lease to run out so I can hit the road full time. This hit home with me. I spent decades chasing the “dream”. The cars, the house, clothes, jewelry, etc. And spent 30+ years addicted to opiates. Lost everything. Now, I clean houses for a living. I have no debt and I’m free. Most importantly, I’m happy and I don’t care what anyone else thinks of me or what I do for work. I’m an atheist and my family, of course, thinks I’m going to “their gods hell”. I don’t care. That THEIR problem. I used to hide my non-belief while everyone talked about god because I didn’t want to upset them. Not anymore. I don’t bring it up, I don’t want to change your mind, but if YOU bring it up, I’m not staying silent in a corner any longer. Deal with it. If your god is that weak that “he” needs you to defend him (always male) that should provoke some thought. I’m camping right now, sitting outside of my trailer, in nature. I’m so happy and content.

    Great job Carolyn!...
I'll be honest with you. A few years back, a Canadian friend of mine (who lives in Montana) criticized your channel when I shared it with them. I was offended. I said "Hey, I LIKE her and I LOVE her channel." They tried to make me feel like I was watching the "wrong" influencer. It DID bother me for a long while, but I still watched and continued to enjoy your content. I love that fact that you are unapologetically YOU!
Yes, I did buy a new 2021 travel trailer (that I had to wait for them to complete in the Spring of 2021), but I do not judge others. In fact, the older Class Cs and trailers have so much character. As a newbie with no experience, a new rig with a warranty worked for me. I still don't have solar set up yet and have not had a true boondocking experience. I'm still camping in RV resorts and campgrounds. One day, I will use all the real life experiences I have learned from your channel to "Camp in the Wild."
Thank you so much and keep it up!

This is why I watch you, Carolyn. I even sent a couple of your videos to my ex-therapist because I couldn't get her to understand the trouble that societal values like you're talking about - cause people to be held back from the life, liberty, and happiness that we're promised as Americans - yet do not have access to. She still never got it. That's why she's my ex-therapist. According to her - it's all on me - what society thinks. According to her - I can change that, by myself.
As far as the people who try to bully you - that guy from Canada is the worst. You ask, "Don't they have better things to do?" That guy from Canada makes his life ABOUT trying to tear you down. I guess in his case - the answer is no.
I don't get it. You're right; what does it matter to someone like him? He or anyone else with that same problem can't make the argument (although, I've heard them aplenty) that how someone lives "reflects back" on other people. Really?! How so? He's way up there - with a whole other following, and can only keep them following by tearing you down. A vicious cycle it looks like, to me.
Anyway, the whole "junky RV" thing makes me think of my dad. He was a guru auto and small aircraft mechanic. His philosophy was that if it's not running well - it won't make any difference how pretty it looks on the outside - because it won't get you to where you're going.
