any response to the problem of dbd not being able to give any details to most issues?
I love the part about the black bubble after being hooked.
The best part is that according to their own explanation, THERE'S NO REASON WHY THE KILLER HAS TO SEE IT TOO
I mean what Scott said basically undermined the entire reason of its existence: “The spot where the killer is after they hook someone is THE HOOK WHERE THEY HOOKED THE SURVIVOR”. It doesn’t even do what it’s supposed to do. All it does is block the entire side of the map the person was hooked at for 5 seconds for no reason, lmao.
Ctrl+c ctrl+v except swap hooks with gens and killers with survivors
Yeah kindred basically isn’t fully functional due to this bubble
The worst part is it nerfs 2 decent addons for both sides. Bitter Murmur for Killer, and Kindred for Survivor. If anything the only reason Kindred is so good is to see is the Killer is camping, and to see other Survivors in SoloQ. The bubble makes it way too hard to see if the killer or survivors instantly dart off to another direction.
Yup, classic bhvr lol, should have expected that answer when I asked the question.
Hope the bubble gets removed someday or that at least aura reading perks work through it.
7:38
The thing is that the Black Bubble WAS addressed about a year ago. It was directly mentioned and then fixed, then the next update broke it again.

@maisybean It was inferred that there will be some people who use the puppers thing to make fun of his death or his ALS which is kinda messed up (either by wearing it or saying something in egc to someone else wearing it) like the people that caused the removal of bubbas masks
DBD's approach to collision is a big part of the problem, they could fill maps with pretty details and still not impact chases too much if a lot of minor stuff had no collision (like the clutter around shack as Scott mentions, which are especially egregious). The logic is crazy really, like some bushes you can walk through, and then there are those bushes on Garden of Joy that are like Sherman tanks and are basically their own loops.
The thing that pissed me off the most about this is that in one answer they say they don't just look at stats, but also community feedback and design goals when making changes, yet the answer they gave for the trapper question says exactly the opposite. "Oh we fully recognize that everyone thinks trapper is awful and needs a lot of help but his stats are OK so we're not gonna do anything fuck you". Like what the fuck? These devs are such liars.
Why would they change him though if the stats are good? If the stats say that a killer gets a 50-60% killrate and the community says that he's underpowered then the community is wrong. Plain and simple. Don't get me wrong, stats can be misinterpreted and bhvr does it all the time (like with the addon use rate) but there is not much to misinterpret here.
@Vex xed Every killer can have a 50-60% killrate if you just camp and tunnel, that doesn't reflect how good the killer's are. And I'm not even taking into account people that just kill themselves or dc just cause they felt like it. Feedback from the community takes priority over inaccurate data, that should be obvious.
@@vexxed6851 trapper is a prime example of why only looking at data is bad. Yes he gets about a 50% win rate (he has the lowest of any killer), but anyone who’s played trapper knows how clunky and outdated his power is compared to other killers. It feels awful playing him, and that is something the entire community agrees on. So no, we’re not in the wrong here, behavior is.
@Estrogen_Fiend they said it’ll be a fun little change, nothing big. Trapper needs a major update. Some new mechanic with his traps that makes them take less time to get.
The questions we really should be asking is how BHVR allocate their damn resources and priorities.

BHVR is one of the few companies I know of that will actively not do something that would earn them a ton of money, like survivor emotes and mori animations. I would normally say it's a good thing that the game company isn't trying to milk the community of all their money and only focuses on skins but I'm inclined to believe that it's more to do with they can't due to internal reasons, whether it's staff or their game engine and spaghetti code maybe, who knows.

Scott you mentioned the mobile team possibly being such a different team, and I'm pretty sure they are.
Idk if you know much about Identity V, but I'm pretty sure BHVR just hired them to create DBD mobile and most of the skins is made by them with BHVR's blessing. I'm almost certain of this because a lot of the changes on Mobile and a lot of the way DBD mobile works is just similar to Identity V in a lot of ways.

I really think something is fishy with how the game itself is coded. Like every patch we get our 20+ bugs and a lot of the time they have nothing do to with what the patch changed and we have to wait weeks to see them fixe these bugs. And the fact that very simple changes takes so long make me wonder if the game code is organised well
BHVR: Hey can I copy your code?
YandereDev: Sure just don't make it obvious.
BHVR:
As a long time destiny 2 player, allow me to explain, *gestures vaguely at the words "spaghetti code"* ya know?
Its probably multiple things. Constant new hires is really telling of one thing: poor management. The age old telling of "People don't quit jobs, they quit managers."
The code is probably shit. But thats more than likely because people in charge are dumb and give terrible guidence
Yes, it is well known that DBD is built on spaghetti coding which means everything is connected to everything in some weird fucky way, leading to completely unrelated things affecting one another, but The DeadByDaylight team is aware of this issue and we are looking into it, but we can't give any concrete details as of right now.

It'd be cool if they made it so you can go into first person mode while hiding in a locker and you'd see 'Puppers was here - Stay Comfy' on the inside of the door near the vents or maybe on one of the sides. Little stuff like that that act as positive memorials and are unable to be affected in any way players, only observed, are the best options.

They can add it in under an hour, but they just refused to do so for 5 years.

"The beatings will continue until morale improves" - BHVR
i think the reason why it takes so long to implement changes in dbd is because of the spaghetti code. Sure a part of why it's so long is because bhvr are not great devs but i also believe that spaghetti code makes it much harder to implement changes and breaks numbers of things when they implement new things like animations, models, etc
yup. spaghetti code is so horrid. Things like making an animation shorter suddenly makes the player move at mach 1, or adding a new weapon makes all the old weapons shoot through walls now... just a few things I've experienced working with other people's code.

On the point about turnover at behavior as it relates to learning what works and what doesn't, that turnover every 2-3 years is on par with most software companies. I work at a non-gaming software company and this literally happens all the time. The key is they need to have really good documentation and they need to throw money at outgoing devs to train up the new ones. Even with that, there will still be growing pains with the new devs, but there's not much else you can do about it. Considering the massive push towards constantly releasing new content, I doubt they have very good documentation. They probably don't have the time for it. That's why behavior should hire a good technical writer if they don't have one already. They should be the guru that documents the philosophy and progression of dbd, what works and what doesn't.
13:34
"A bush. A tree."
"A FUCKING RANDOM TWIG ON EYRIE THAT COMPLETELY HALTS MY CHAINSAW OR HATCHET." would have been the logical conclusion to the triumvirat of shit.
About the "BM with emotes" point you brought up: The same argument can be made for perks being strongly tuned for weaker killers. The current argument (I don't know if you subscribe to that idea or not) is "we can't have too strong perks because the high tier killers, mainly Nurse and Blight, are too opressive with them". But they already are opressive, even with balanced or even weaker perks. So let weak killers have their tools, Nurse and Blight are gonna slap anyway.
I know its funny they always give the same response from BHVR but its still somewhat of a relief that they are acknowledging issues that are being asked of. Many companies such as activision are dealing with a ton of issues such as IP grabbing and pc bricking in their older titles as well as other basic things about their game that they are not addressing and even an acknowledgement can mean so much. Ofc I'm sure a lot of people know this and it is still funny to poke fun at the safe response but its not all that bad
i’d prefer a safe vague response over an overwatch promise that never happens

Hey, that's my question at 33:34 ! Disappointing answer but expected.
3:42 I work for a AAA studio, by the time you are seeing something on PTB that is the result of months of work and it was already decided that is what is going into the game. The decision to work on and prioritize that content was made prior to starting, and the only changes they'd risk pushing to PTB will be data ones. (think number changes)
None of the feedback from this Q&A will realistically be implemented in the patch following the anniversary one. The content and design for that patch has most likely already been approved and is roughly 1/3rd of the way through by now. Maybe the patch after it though, at the earliest.
I think they answered 3 questions in the entire thing. Everything else was just "We are working on it, but cant say anything" or just dodged the question
OH THAT WAS THE ORIGIN OF THAT RECORDING. (We still need the remixed version)
I can't believe uou missed the billy update question, you were so close at the end!!!
They might have different skeletons rigs for the mobile cosmetics, which means they have to go in for each one and re-rig them. This is a guess obviously, and not necessarily a year's worth of work, but that might just be how they're prioritizing it. Licensing issues would also make sense though.
why is Scott so lowkey hilariously savage
“We’re working on it, noted - The AMA.”
25:37, GGG have said that while they release patches in 3 month cycles they do work on them for about a year before they release.
what's the thing about puppers dwigth skin that scott was talking about that people would do?
I wonder if part of the reason they "dont have the resources" out of no where, is due to some sort of trademark deal. Like hypothetical here.. But lets say they suddenly got the rights for Chuckie, BUT its contingent on the chapter dropping alongside the release of a show or movie. So instead of a year, now they have 4 months. This could also factor into the 1yr quote of developing killers. Killer A gets pushed back and paused so that they can redirect resources to the license. Thus making the average longer
For the mobile cosmetics taking a long time to come to main game, it could also be to try and incentivize people to spend time (and maybe eventually money) on the mobile version
I cant believe he went this whole stream without spamming the button evern once
For custom Moris, I imagine there are multiple problems. Firstly we don't know if the infrastructure of the mori system in the game would conveniently allow you to load another mori animation, though this probably isn't too hard to code (though spaghetti code won't make it easy) it would need to be done first before any custom moris are added. They would also have to add another panel to the store.
Another thing is the mori animation length. They probably don't want any in game moris to have different lengths as that could result in pay to win cosmetics (which they like to pretend to avoid) so either every mori would have to be the same length (by timing the animation or just having the killer stand still for a second) or they are waiting to implement the finisher mori system.
13:41 Regarding clutter, another thing some people don't realize is that at most studios the level design and level art teams are completely independent. The design team is usually working with simole shapes like cubes and cylinders to design a leve, and then the art team goes through and replace those primitives with actual art. The design team is trying to build something that is fun to play, while the art team is trying to build something that is nice to look at, and sometimes those two goals butt up against eachother.
Also, from personal experience as a designer, I know a lot of level artists who don't even play the game or test their work. If it looks pretty in the editor, they consider their job done. Ideally the QA team should be finding and reporting all of these issues, though, so I'm not sure why so many of them make it to live servers (or don't get fixed more quickly)

On how long it takes to make a killer, since there’s 4 releases in a year they likely have several small teams broken up working on several killers at a time, rather than one big one all working on one killer. This way if one doesn’t work out by a certain point in the release cycle there is another one that might be ready or close to ready.
May I just point out the stupidity of making a AUA (ask us anything) only to just answer basically every question with “we’re aware of the issue, but we can’t tell you anything about what we’re doing to fix it. All we can say is it’ll probably take 1 - 2 years give it take”
Imo, Unbreakable basekit _cannot_ be in the base game as it was showcased in that nightmarish ptb.
However, it _could_ be implemented healthily by making it so that "basekit Unbreakable" activates _only_ when there are either two Survivors remaining _or_ every remaining Survivor is downed/hooked in order to both prevent toxicity/holding the game hostage for 4 minutes and make Killers just _end the games already_ instead of just feverishly slugging for the 4k.
they’ve been requesting new gamemodes since i was in high school and i graduated 4 years ago 😭
the summer bbq and the pustula event were my favorites 😭
I love how they say they don't have time to work on much between DLC release windows. Too busy chasing money to fix huge. long standing issues in the game. Never change BHVR. Also how does it take a year to make a single killer if they release 4 of them every year? Along with survivors, maps, perks etc.
If slugged for more then 2 minutes you get up once for free.
If BHVR has 809 employees, and the vast majority of these are "The Dead by Daylight team is aware of this issue and we are looking into it but we can't give any concrete details as of right now," what ARE they working on? Everything is "backlog" or "looking into it", so what is this massive team working on? I know some of them are working on new upcoming killers, maps, and survivors, but... oh my god over 800 employees and they have to give an ETA of "Later this year or next year" for an FOV slider. It's... it's an FOV slider! Or how many other super basic things? How long did it take for them to add a search bar for perks (that doesn't even work how it should! It should just stay in the box instead of opening a completely new box to type!) I know things are more complicated than we know, but it baffles me how little seems to get done with a company with that many people.

On the case of Puppers, uped the rarity of the Charm to highest, its fkin buried with all other all uncommon charms.
its a lot faster if you have a small team for creation of a singular character. if the same person knows exactly how they want it they can do the art, program around that, and playtest immediately. but this is mainly because you skip the confirmation and just go through it, because you yourself are the one in charge of the project and not have to cater to investors or un-invested ceo's. mistakes are the main thing that slows down production, and if the people in charge aren't good in terms of creating feedback for all the teams, releases tend to slow down heavily from lack of communication.

I disagree with custom moris being a huge money maker and I can see why they would be hesitant to allocate resources to the idea. What percentage of the player base actually play killer enough to want to spend money on moris? A lot of people don’t even buy cosmetics
it seems like they are working less in just pushing updates and more scheduling like if you have a hillbilly buff ready why tf is it still not out or been in any ptbs
I assume cosmetics will need to be remade at a higher resolution for PC, cant do a 1-1 mobile port.
I do think a form of Unbreakable should be in the game, but first they need to address the hook shortage on some maps. For example, main in Borgo there's a corner where if you have Boil Over, impossible to be hooked unless the Killer has Iron Grasp and/or Agitation. School in Badham, unless the basement spawns in there impossible to be hooked unless killer has Iron Grasp/Agitation. Garden of Joy has a general hook shortage and they're in annoying locations. Some maps like Red Forest have multiple locations where if a hook is saboed you can't get to another hook fast enough. Saboing should never in my opinion make it impossible to hook unless the killer already traveled a bit to get there, it should be a time wasting mechanic and a tool to force the killer to go to a different spot (A hook further away from the gen people are working on for example) these issues need to be addressed before Unbreakable can be basekit.
See that is just so retarded because when I play killer, there seems to be no hooks anywhere for example when I've been on midwhich legit there was only 2 hooks 1 at the end of a hallway and the other around the corner. As survivor I've seen like 2 hooks in each hallway and on other maps you can legit hook all 4 survivors on one side of the map which shouldn't be possible, there definitely should be a balance, not a shortage and definitely not a map overloaded with hooks
They could allow you to pick up yourself if you're the first survivor to be slugged and rest are dead/on hook
Basically like adrenaline when hatch closes. Or how pinhead chainhunt is disabled if you're last survivor standing.
wheres patrick spencer and his hockey stick?
56:03 they have previously said that they are totally fine with hitting people on hook, deeming it "kebabing," so why are they fine with something like that which is considered to be BM, but backpedal on emotes? kinda weird as it is literally free money as Scott and the commenter say
Coding and animating something usually goes very fast. The stuff that takes the longest is collecting data, developing a concept and evaluating it. Because of BHVRs secretive nature the data collection process could actually take several months if its done just by a few people, bigger studios have whole data analysis departements who are searching in the internet for potential ideas non stop. The process could be much faster if the devs would just do public surveys about new killer designs, but even this would take quite a time to analyse all data.
Bigger companies also have more or less strict schemes of how to design content and thats the reason all CODs, Assassins Creeds etc. are pretty similar to the previous titles.
About porting skins, League of Legends has had that issue for ages, having updated models in Legends or Runeterra and Wild Rift while in League they haven't been updated since game came out over a decade ago.
Tears of the kingdom had 500 employees working on it. Behavior has at least around that many working on this game and seems to be like 40 percent the quality. There had to be internal bullshit or something
Halo Reach had some fine hitboxes. You fire a rocket between someone’s legs and it would go right through.
Another thing about adding puppers cosmetics to the game is that they don't want to add too much free content but they also know it would be wrong to monetize them
I’m wondering if the turnover of employees and miscommunication between teams are the reasons why characters like Haddie received such little care from the devs. From her perks to her design to her cosmetics, Haddie was set up to fail and even the devs had to eventually recognize that they dropped the ball on her. I can’t imagine any other substantial reasons why
