    Hey Rick, I enjoy your videos but this specific video is a little misleading. The title implies you can fly further away by using a cable interface between the remote controller and your phone, etc. However, this does little to improve the connection between the remote controller and the aircraft. Yes, it does decrease ambient noise caused by the phone but the power levels between the RC and the Spark are simply not affected and there is no data that shows a further flying distance is achievable. A better title might have been 'how to reduce lag times and improve video transmission'. Just trying to provide constructive feedback.

      Actually my preliminary test showed I lost distance when it auto switched my signal to 2.4 once the lightening cable was plugged. Although my video was much better.

    • @tapmad
      @tapmad 7 лет назад +1

      Totally agree. The Spark will fly to its maximum battery range without OTG. I've personal done 4054m, but I know of a guy regularly getting over 4400m and returning safely. (I suspect he puts pixie dust on his batteries, lol.)

    • @brianroberts5062
      @brianroberts5062 6 лет назад +2

      Actually it has 2 wifi Connections. One to the drone and another to the smartphone. So the OTG eliminates one. So there is no change to the flight distance other than reducing noise closer to the RC controller. There are also limitation distance in the Software if you are OTG connected and Wifi connected to another device e.g. home network.

    • @lismorris5370
      @lismorris5370 6 лет назад +1

      Actually, in the Eu, you can get significantly better range with an OTG cable, because 5.8 ghz is poorly supported in countries that use the EC protocols. This means that many phones don't support 5.8, so you have to use 5.8 to connect the remote to the Spark...and, again due to the EC rules, 5.8 is only allowed to be used at low power. As a result, some folks in Europe are only getting 200m range without an OTG cable. Also- version 4.1.18 of the app does not support OTG use. You have to stick with 4.1.15.
      For folks elsewhere in the world, go nuts- no OTG needed!

    I know I'm being picky or technical but, the controller and drone are looking for a clear WiFi channel or a channel that doesn't have nearby other WiFi channels in use. So, it's not looking for the strongest signal but, the cleanest. BTW, your drone will always be a very strong signal due to close proximity. The secret to any good and reliable RF connection is signal to noise ratio... which is the signal you want over any other nearby signal or noise floor at your location. And, on that subject, i would recommend turning the WiFi off on your phone and iPad. This will remove a very strong nearby WiFi signals that have the potential to interfere or reduce the quality of WiFi connection between controller and drone. I have notice while testing with my iPad WiFi while using it on and off that I see stronger receive signal from drone when it is further away as opposed to my controller seeing other WiFi signals from nearby devices. As one person mentioned the controller and drone have the same transmit power which is true but, the controller can 'hear' the drone easier without other WiFi signals near by. Again, it's all about signal to noise and the other Wifi signals are noise if they are not the signal it wants to hear which is your drone. If you do not have cellular capabilities in your tablet or iPad and need to use tether mode on your phone to tablet, then use a Bluetooth connection instead of WiFi. Works great, just doesn't have the same throughput as WiFi can have.

    Hi Rick, I love the information you provide. One thing nobody mentions is when you make this connection the wi-fi signal strength is not monitored from the DJI ap. That icon does not light up to show signal strength. I have been flying my Spark close and have only made small increases in distance to find what kind of range I will get. When I start to get interference on my screen I turn around and head back. I have not forced a RTH yet.

    Rick got a Spark question for you that I haven't been able to find an answer for.
    I took a couple of flights today (no wind) and my outbound speed was about 6 MPH. When I selected RTH the speed went to 20 MPH. The Spark was not in Beginner or Tripod mode. I am using a remote wifi hookup. The wind was less than 5 MPH.Having owned a Mavic this doesn't seem right ?

  • @happyfox711
    @happyfox711 7 лет назад +2

    I never used the cable with Apple, and it seems in the video to configure itself, but for all the Android users (remember the Mavic f.ex.runs on Android KitKat - for all you IOS people that think you're the best) the problems you can run into when you don't get the cable to work often has to do with the configuration of your Android device. On some of mine I had to enable developer/debug USB connection for it to accept the connection. Also first time you connect it with the app running it asks if this app should run by default with this connection, click OK and in the future the app will start by itself whenever you connect and switch on the controller.

    This is 1st video I've seen that walks through connecting Remote Controller (RC) to Spark! Very needed!
    This video covers three awesome tips, only way to make it better would be to have a quick overlay, or just say at what timestamps you change between the different topics:
    1 [0:40] ( ruclips.net/video/anVIHuv4Zq8/видео.html ) - Spark (Wi-Fi) vs. 'other DJI' (Occusync) connection
    2 [4:45] ( ruclips.net/video/anVIHuv4Zq8/видео.html ) - Connecting the Remote Controller (RC) for the 1st time through Wi-Fi
    - Controller Wi-Fi password is on the back of the controller!
    3 [5:40-ish] ( ruclips.net/video/anVIHuv4Zq8/видео.html ) - Using OTG to directly connect the RC to the device running DJI 4 Go app. (Apple or Android)
    Thanks for all the work you put into your channel!

      Matt, thanks for the compliment and the suggestions. I'll try and provide a timetable in future clips. I also did an earlier clip on how to connect and break the remote tether to the quad a week or so ago that goes into a little more detail as well. I have a lot more content posting soon so be sure and stop back. Rick

      I certainly will Rick! Really appreciate your channel, and spent some QT in the store too.
      I got my Spark connected last night, and it was great! The biggest problem I had was inserting the OTG cable into the remote, I was so nervous I was breaking the tab off! For others trying this for the 1st time, I would recommend doing a few dry runs with connecting the cable prior to flight time. Save that battery for the motors!
      Here's the steps I wrote down while watching the third section, and that worked very easily for me:
      - Spark is powered on, but is off-camera
      - DJI Go app is running and showing live video on tablet
      - The Remote Controller (RC) is ON
      - And he makes the OTG connection between RC and tablet.
      - Then he turns off the Wi-Fi on the tablet
      - Screen flickers and resumes streaming Spark video feed! Success!

    Just a heads up guys. For anyone new reading this post, it looks like the DJI GO 4 App (vs 4.1.20 - Newest Vs Out) has an issue with the OTG Cables. Users reporting "Weak Image Transmission Signal" with this newest version. Info here on DJI's site;

    Hi Rick, great videos, very well put together and very informative.
    My question - if the Phone/Tablet connects with WiFi to the RC (very short distance), how does or why does using the OTG make the WiFi signal between RC and aircraft that much better? I know it works because I cannot fly my Spark using only a WiFi connection so I always use the OTG.
    I have recently heard dji does not suggest using OTG because it has not been fully tested. Also I bought my Spark while I was in China. I am not able to switch to 2.4Ghz so I have not been able to test using that. All in all the 2 WiFi signals the issues between Apple and Android and getting stable feed between aircraft, controller and phone is all very confusing.

    Someone on one of the forums was given a beta version of controller firmware to try and address some problems. The beta disabled the ability to connect with the cable. No official word from dji that I know if as to whether this might be the case in a future release. Quick solution, be careful about firmware controller updates unless you now how to roll back to a previous release. Hopefully, this is just the beta version and will not be the case with future releases.

    Great video, Rick. It seems there is a lot of misinformation about going with OTG connection to the Spark. I have seen that some say that by using the OTG connection, the DJI Care is voided? I also see that there is no an increase in range? Do you always fly the Spark using OTG or sometimes with wifi? I have been a Mavic Pro flyer for about a year and purchased the Spark after seeing all the bargain prices during the holidays. 1. The RTH to controller never gets to update correctly each time I press the 'mark to rc' in the MC settings. It will still fly back to original home point!!
    2. I solve the problem by exiting the app and go back in again
    3. This time the map orientates correctly and the RTH to controller is marked and refresh correctly - I checked this in mapview.
    Are you encountering the same problem? I tried it with both my iPhone 6S plus and IPad mini and both needs me to exit the app and get back in before RTH to rc is marked correctly

    Hi Rick great video well presented, I have a question regarding the Spark RTH functions, I understand that within 20 Mtrs Horiontally from the RTH point the Spark will land immediately, and from 20 - 80 Mtrs it will RTH with obstacle avoidance, and after 80 Mtrs it will RTH at a higher speed and therefore obstacle avoidance will be turned off..... UNLESS you have set RTH at current altitude in which case it will RTH with obstacle avoidance, is this correct?? I am not keen on trying it to find out :) thanks for the great videos.

    Hey, is there any way to see how much of the signal you have with an otg cable? For me, when I turn airplane mode on my phone with that cable plugged in, there isn’t anywhere where it indicates the signal between the drone and the remote.

    If you have a company making custom cables, can't they make a micro USB to lightening cable or android equivalent so that the dongle could be eliminated completely?

      The challenge is that we also sell the cables for connection to the Mavic Pro and Phantom series so using the smaller Dongle allows us to accommodate more models with the same item. When you use the kit, you almost don't even know the adapter is installed it's so small. Thanks for the post, Rick

      Thanks for the post but the cable you have a link for is used on the Mavic controller to connect a phone / tablet and won't work with the Spark. The Spark requires a special OTG cable adapter as I explain in the clip and that't why we have these cables (and connectors) custom made for us. I hope that helps clear up any confusion. Rick

    Hi Rick, it worked great with the mini iPad 4. Do you know if two Sparks can be linked to the same RC (at different times of course.)

    Hello rick i have couple questions regarding these cables. They do look really nice however i am concerned using these with my iPhone 7 plus, will this cable fit through the slot of the controller and connect to my phone? since i do not have a tablet. Also When you said " These cables can be sketchy" how are these cables in regards to quality? do they last? do they feel cheap? or are they great cables and would you 100% recommend them? Since the cable that DJI gives you seems to go bad. Thanks Rick

    Hey Rick, Great video! I just ordered the Spark (I'm not sure why, it just seems so unique I had to get it). Anyway. I was looking to order the cables from you, but I have a quick question; What are the 30 and 20 cm cables? I have an Iphone 6 so I know that it has the lightning port, but I'm not clear on exactly which cable I'll need to make the connection you describe. Perhaps you covered this in the video and I missed it somehow. (?) Any help would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the great work!.

      "What are the 30 and 20 cm cables?" The 20 is for a phone, 30 for a tablet.

    Hi Rick,
    Love your videos...have learned lots. I have figured out the sequence to get my tablet connected to my remote and then to the Spark. once connected...i can see the video feed on my tablet. I can adjust the gimbal with both my tablet and my remote. I have tried two different dongle connections...but cannot get hooked up via the cables. As soon as I put my tablet in Airplane mode...I lose the signal. So, the cable is not working. I guess I have picked the sketchy ones. Just checking... do you think your dongle insert and cable will work for me? Thank you for all your help!

    Nice job, but here are my questions. I use the mini c to lightening cable between my controller and mini 4. Works great. But I need WiFi on to get my maps via my cell phone hot spot. I do not have and never had a selection to download offline maps. So WiFi stays on. I assume the WiFi hot spot connection interferes with the Spark / controller WiFi connection, but cannot get around it due to the map issue. Any ideas?

    I got your cables and set it up on wifi on my iPhone 6* and got connection. With the cable plugged in already I turned off the wifi and lost connection. I have to have the wifi on to be connected. You showed disconnecting the wifi and it stayed connected with the cables connected. Why is that? Am I only connected by the wifi on my phoone?

    Hi Rick, I have a question. On the dji message board several people claim that the wifi to the remote works better on 2.4 rather then 5.8, have you heard anything about this?

    • @Dronevalley
      @Dronevalley  7 лет назад +1

      It all depends on what "noise" is in the area you're flying. The WiFi (ISM) band is used for a lot of other communications and some locations have a quieter 2.4 Ghz band and with other locations the 5.8 Ghz is quieter. The best thing to do is let the controller decide because it dynamically scans both bands on power-up and picks the one with the most consistent signal. I hope that helps. Rick

    Dongle, eh? Those do many different things in many different situations.
    IN OTHER WORDS, why didn't you explain OTG?
    I'm glad I have a proper cable without having to insert the OTG cable and extra connection points of possible failure.
    Bonus: same direct connect cable works with both Spark and Mavic Mini!
