Removing Garbage Disposal (I am tired of replacing broken ones)

- Over the years, my sink garbage disposals have failed. Something inside rusts through and I have water all under my sink. This is the 3rd time this has happened. So I am tired of it and have decided to remove the disposal and simply tie my sink into the outlet line.
Edit....I have been encouraged to put another garbage disposal into my sink. My reasons can be found at minute marker 19:25
You are a life saver! Finding that metal ring to take out was SO KEY to an absolutely easy removal. Or frustration went from extremely high to oh... we got this! THANK YOU!!!
Way to go!!! Glad to be of help
I loved how wonderfully and patiently you teach. You make me not afraid to try. Thank you!
You can do it!
@@ifixthings3431 thanks to you I did it! :) Thank you!
Fantastic - thank you! I'm not replacing the disposal unit, we never use it. Best video on RUclips to help!
I need a grandma like her. 👏🏻
Thank you! That is indeed a wonderful compliment!!
Wonderful! Thank you. Getting that damn adaptor off was pissing me off lol. And every other video I found, they were all just using the existing adaptor. Bravo.
Thank you for your comment! Yeah, that adapter…
Thanks for this tutorial. I just found your channel coz my insinkerator is broken and full of foul smelling water. I love your no nonsense approach.
You are so welcome!
Lady you have been my favorite RUclips find of the year! God bless you my sweet lady.
Wow, thank you!
I saw this video months ago and I am ready to do this now and I was so sad I forgot to save it and I had such a hard time finding it again today! I am so happy I found it!!! This is the only video I feel like I can follow to get this project done! 🥰🥰🥰 Thank you!!!
Awesome video! This is exactly what I was looking for in order to replace a broken garbage disposal with a regular drain. Very informative. Already removed the garbage disposal. Now on to step 2; installing the regular drain and proper tubing. Thank you for this!
What a great teacher you are! I've put JB Weld on rust spots around the disposal! I don't use it and don't want a new one. Your video helps enormously! Love it!
You are an inspiration single women like me. I'm going to do mine too. Can't seem to get a handyman to show up so I'll just do it myself!!
Hell she's a inspiration to to me and I'v done construction all my life. I still needed this video to help.
Mrs.lady lol...you should have told me I would have come over and taken it out...hot mess lol imagine me coming across your comment I was like wait Mrs. Kim?
Thank you!!!! This is the exact video I was looking for. You are very thorough, detailed, and informative. For that I really appreciate you. I am looking forward to more content.
Thanks for the video. You did a great job with it. I am pretty handy and have replaced garbage disposals in the past. Looked at your video to refresh my memory and to help figure out what pipes I will need to use when I replace 5 of these in apartments that I take care of. They are nothing but a pain and almost totally useless for getting rid of anything. I use a small compost bin and outside composter now instead of these pieces of junk. Meat scraps, etc. go in the garbage.
Glad it was helpful!
I love learning how to fix things. So rewarding doing it myself. Exellent tutorial. Just what I needed. A very likeable lady. I save too.
Glad it was helpful!
i fix things 2...i did this with my own trash disposal...i wanted it out of there...but you have made the best video ever for /do it yourself/.. thx 4 doing this for all those who dont know how..God bless
I can't thank you enough. That pesky wire type ring fitting was not easy to see on my end. When I saw your video I was like.... Whaaaaat?!?!?! I ran to my sink popped the ring and it all fell apart just like yours. I thought I was going to have to get out the sawzall, but you saved the day!! You Rock!
I was so happy to be able to find that darn ring! Glad to pass on my good fortune!
Thank you every since I moved in my first house we have a garbage disposal and the bottom would leak. And I bought a new one but gonna take the new one back and get this method
THANK YOU!
Ran into this exact issue and this video saved me a ton of time. Thank you!
I love your video. So simple and to the point. I am not a handyman type but have fixed a few things over the years and was dreading doing this job until I saw your video. Those handyman videos talk and talk and talk to all of just like we are supposed to know this or that. Not only were you informative but entertaining and now I am going to get rid of my stinky, leaking, jammed up disposal that has not worked in about two years. We have a small bucket under it to catch water and have to dump it every now and then. Thanks again for your very cool video.
I appreciate your assistance, and I too hate the garbage disposal, I need to hook up the dishwasher, so not sure how to do that. Thanks for the great video, and being so human.
Thank you nice lady! Believe it or not in the late mid-80s I used to be a plumber's assistant. I couldn't remember any of this. Thank you for the refresher course. It's it's going to be much easier.
You are so welcome!
Your video is so helpful! I was struggling with getting the piece off because these silly plumber's decided to use a ring which was hard to see! Thank you
Thank you very much for the instructions about the metal ring around the top of the bracket. I can't begin to tell you how important that info was for me! : )
So glad to have helped!
Your descriptions are so thorough and helpful! Thank you!!
Glad you like them!
Thanks for your help. I was stuck and you exactly showed me how to take that ring out from the bottom.
Thank you so much for your reply. I am glad this helped.
oh ty just took mine out and was like how the heck does this metal piece come off then i saw u just got that ring out ty so much !
I’m actually going through this issue now so this helps a ton. Not to mention saving a lump of money. Thanks for being so thorough.
My pleasure
Thx Karen, from another Karen. I'm a 61 yr old widow and this was very "down to earth" !!
Glad that you liked it.
You're amazing!! I'm glad my wife can't fix things because if she could, she wouldn't need me around anymore :)
Thanks Karen, just needed an idea how to remove the snap ring from the mounting bracket and was so surprised how EZ it was. Wish me luck!
Hope it went well.
I like your style, Ms. Things. You taught me what I needed to know.
Glad to be of service.
I really appreciate your demonstration, I struggle with it for 20 minutes, looked at your video, and it came right off. Great video
This video was an absolute joy to watch
Marry Me! K, I have a friend who had the same difficulty so we (I) removed the leaking Garberator (CDN). Now I have to re-pipe it without the disposal and your details of removing the retaining ring helped. Thanks for the great video.I do my own work but my friends seem to be a little lame at this. Great WORK!
So glad that this helped!
Exactly the information I needed. Now I begin.
I absolutely enjoyed every minute of this informative video. You SO remind me of me being I too, fix things and break things, and use critical thinking to get it done. Thanks for the help and the chuckles too. ;)
You are so welcome! Keep on fixing stuff....it is fun and money saving!
Thank you. I couldn’t see the retaining spring that kept the drain collar locked in. I was getting ready to cut when I thought better of it and found your solution. Thanks again!
Glad to have been able to assist
I get mama's family vibes. This is awesome
Thank you for the encouraging comment! You are so very welcome.
Excellent video! Helpful and thorough from a fellow homeowner and tinker! Thanks for taking the time!
Glad this helped. Please stay safe and well.
Great video.. had the same issue with my disposal, just locked up and i was over it. Everything you said worked perfectly 👍🏻
Sweet beans! Glad it worked for you
Hey Karen great video best in any class confidence is everything and you nailed it Thank You for sharing this you go girl
Thank you so much!
thank you!! we were so stuck on how to get that last part out of the sink. thanks for showing us how to remove that wire!
Glad I could help!
Rock solid video!! Been wanting to do this for awhile and only made one trip to Home Depot. You did a great job explains things, thank you.
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you!I was attempting this anyway yet greatly appreciate the tips & boost in confidence! You are great!Take care 💕
You are so welcome!
Thanks Karen, my garbage disposal leaked through, rusted, etc.... I'm going to do exactly what you just did here and just put pipes in. I also have a septic tank and I was never a fan of disposals to begin with anyway. Thanks for making the video!
Hope it goes smoothly!
I have the exact same problem. THANK YOU for posting. It has encouraged me to do it myself!
OMG- I was going to call a handyman, now I'm gonna do it myself1!!Thank you so much....
Hope it goes well for you. You can do it!!!!
I will be attempting this tonight, Thank you so much for this video! Wish me luck
Hope this worked out for you! Let me know how you did.
Thank you for this video, you really saved me money.
Hey Karen, I’m a Karen too and prefer fixing my stuff as well! I’m ready to try this and your tutorial seems pretty easy to follow. Love your approach and teaching style! Thanks! I’ll let you know how it goes,
Thank you for your comment....hope ti went well for you.
Your tutorial was extremely helpful. Thank you!!
You're welcome!
Ok - I am taking mine out tomorrow!! Thanks for the great information.
Good luck!
Thank you so much for making this video. I decided to get rid of my insinkerator that I never use. It started to leak. I also find a wet box and water damage. I'm still in the process and have gone to the store three times. I was at the point of almost crying when I saw your video. I feel confident to put the drain in now. Next I just have to figure out the piping. Now that I saw your video, I'm not giving up! I can do this! I hope 😉. So a 4th trip to the store is in my future.
Hope it went well for you. I have a huge box of PVC stuff in the garage from years of home ownership.....I think it was only 2 trips to the store because of that.
@@ifixthings3431 all went well! I replace the drain and re-plumbed under the sink.
EXACTLY our scenario today. Great video, gotta get to work.
You got this!
"See what I mean, jellybean?" so cute
I appreciate your refresher course. I forgot the snap ring. Now I can do this tomorrow or so, thanks again.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video! Thank you so much for showing us.
Thanks for watching!
You are amazing!! Thank you so much! I was stuck on that darn ring.
Awesome tutorial Karen! Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video....but *Important Note*. Please safely disconnect the power to the disposal before attempting any removal. Turn off the circuit breaker to the disposal before disconnecting the electrical wire. Peace and Blessings!
Hers wasnt hardwired.
Thank you for an awesome video. I'm gonna try it myself, However i have 1 problem.
The sink water exits out through the wall outside into my yard. 😢 I don't know what to do about that.
Do you have any ideas what I need to do? About this.
I definitely don't want to spend $100's on something i can try myself.
Thank you.
Karen, great video. Don’t marry anyone but me!
I’ve had to replace ours a couple of times now and was looking for a “refresher course”. Yours was so good I forwarded it to my wife. Will also look for your other videos for her in case she decides to kick me out. Thinking of forwarding to women in our church and neighborhood.
Again good job!
I am grateful this was able to serve you and possibly your church. I have used these skills many times to help folks at my church when they did not know what to do. Bless you and stay well!
How was the garbage disposal connected to electric was it plugged in to an outlet. I just bought a condo and the garburator is all rusted and does not work. I will do the same thing and remove and just put a drain.
REally a great video Karen. Are you a teacher by any chance? You take your time and explain things and reason them through. Very encouraging AND good video quality. Thanks!
Oh my gosh! You made my day. I’m not officially a licensed teacher or anything like that but I have done teaching in the past. Thank you for the encouragement.
Great video for us weekend home warriors....
Indeed! I am always ready to try to do a fix before paying someone else to do it.
Nice video, however what is holding the disposal in place is a little tang right next to the loop. My unit had developed a leak and I did have to dremel off the tangs. Also, the ring washer was also rusted into place so had to destroy the in-sink mount.
Thank you so much and kudos for you ,I bought a.very expensive garbage disposal you think it was going to last a long time ? not so ,it lasted for four years so I don’t know if I want to replace it or just put a regular trap like you did ,it is surprising to watch someone that fixes things like I do,I was my mom’s handy men and I totally get you, thanks again !
Thank you! We need to remove our disposal.
Karen, you rock! Great vid thank-you!
Great vid and helpful to my situation. 🙏🏾👍🏽
I loved your video!!!!!!!
How do I do this if there's a hose for my dishwasher attached to the disposal I'm removing?
Such a helpful video! could you provide a parts list or another video where you talk through figuring out the pipe size, the connectors needed, etc. I feel like I could put this together, but I would struggle to buy the right items in preparation.
I will usually buy more part than I need because I know the store will take back what is left over (if I don't keep it in my plumbing box.)
Great video! My mom wants to get rid of her garbage disposal... because it's leaking. I wish you would have shown the pipe cuts/fitting, but that's nothing that I can't figure out for myself. I swear, I've saved my mother thousands of $$$ with DIY videos. I can't understand why professionals charge so much, when people make this look fairly easy.
I need to disconnect a hardwired connection. Take the plate off of the connection box (after cutting the electricity at the breaker box), unscrew the wire nuts holding them together, put the wire nut back on the live wires while taking out the connector wires, and replace plate. Turn electricity back on and test the plate with a "no-touch" tester. If there's no light/beep, you're good to go!
Love it! I'm in the same boat, I replaced my Disposal just a few years ago and it has already rusted out AGAIN! Tired of it and compost now anyway, so it's going out for good. You didn't cover the dishwasher drain attachment. Were you able to find a piece of PVC with an opening or did you just cut a hole for that yourself?
Being a 59 year-old DIYer who has tired of finding the elusive honest plumber to fix things, I (almost) always try to fix t myself first. Appreciate your practical, humorous approach. [BTW, I know there are some great plumbers out there.... but they always seem to move, retire, or otherwise disappear between jobs and I have to start over.]
Thank you for your comment! Yeah those disposals are such a nightmare. I apologize for not showing the attachments… I had a bunch of spare parts that I sort of Frankensteined together. I should’ve filmed that as well.
that wire you encountered I found out is called a snap ring. I found this out after I cut the flange off with a right angle grinder with a cut off wheel. I usually do things the hard way the first time. great vid and by the way you got guts
Thank you.....I did not know it existed and it had me stumped for a while.
Great Karen! You made me feel that I can remove my leaky garbage disposal.
Thanks Karen for this video. I have the exact problem and plan to remove the disposal too. Too bad you didn’t show how you cannibalized the black elbow pipe. Very helpful overall. Thanks
Glad it helped. I probably should have captured the piping portions as well, sorry.
My stupid thing got stuck too! I am going to use your video to remove and do a normal sink. I am confused on the drain connecting to dishwasher. Is that the drain coming from dishwasher? Meaning if I use the dishwasher I have to terminate it to another pipe?
This video just helped my dad
Fantastic video. Great job.
Karen great job!How did you install outlet for disposal ac cord under sink?
Thank you so much. You are very cool. I’m heading in to remove my disposal now 😀
Hope it worked out for you!
Thank you! You’re on the spot!!!!
Glad it helped!
I have a question. I need to remove mine so thank you for this video but I need to reconnect my dishwasher hose because I do use mine. How would I reconnect that hose?
I usually go to the store an buy way too many parts and piece it together while sitting in front of the sink. Depending on how much I bought initially, I might keep the rest or store it later for another plumbing type job.
The garbage disposal in my home is on the left side which doesn't make sense because all the smaller sinks are on the right. ugh! I barely use it so thinking of taking it out during my kitchen remodel and go with a single sink. What do you think?
I've had to replace 3 of them all from leaking water like yours and one from rocks because my wife changed the water in the fish tank 😢. Get rid of the disposal is a good idea.
Loved it. "see what I mean, jelly bean"?
Thank you!! Best video out there! *Same here, garage disposal leaked
Thank you for your reply.
Great video Karen! Was going to do the same but chickened-out and replaced the unit (oddly enough after exactly three trips to the big box store). Next time though I'm doing this.
thank you for the reply. have a great weekend.
Thanks for all the $$$ that I saved. Video was exactly the same as the one on my sink.
Thanks Again.
I am so glad that this helped and thank you for you comment
You’re one of my heroes now!!! 🔥♠️🔥 I was doing good until I got to that little ring thingy. 😆 And then I found 🫵🏾YOUR Video!!! Yeeeeessssss!!! Thank you sooo much!!!
You’re AMAZING!!!⭐️💪🏾✊🏾
Bobby Be!!!🔥♠️🔥
I am so glad this helped! You are very welcome… And thank you for your lovely comment.
Great video. MIne is hard wired so I'm not sure what to do with the electrical wires and the on/off switch.
You can use the wires to install an LED light bar under the sink.
Thanks for great vid; Karen! I soo relate to you. Am a woman about your age range...homeowner, DIYer. inclined to save things etc. Except you're braver, me-thinks-less fazed by needing to assess & problem solve. I let the plumbing supply salesperson sell me on a garbage disposal for my kitchen remodel. It's working fine now, but I rarely use it cause it's not supposed to be that environmentally friendly. Will prob end up doing what you did some day. Is easier to clear clogs, too, without the disposal. Wish I could've seen the thumb screws tightening thing (since I don't have a plumber's wrench), and maybe seen a "summary vid" of you "cannabalizing" pipe parts to ultimately connect it all. Also, it's awesome that you didn't have leaks, but what if it does (like if/when I do this? :-) This is less shown on RUclips vids: What to do when things don't turn out ideally :-) But in any case, again, great vid! Take care!
Yay! A like-minded sister!! You’re right I probably should’ve shown how I cannibalized the piping parts. I keep in my garage a bin full of spare parts as well and in light of the fact that these aren’t pressurized fittings you don’t have to use the more expensive piping. And oddly enough I did notice a slight drip… I think it’s coming from where I put the plumbers putty, and I might’ve torqued it down too tight. I might do a follow up video when I go to fix it. Thank you for your comment it was quite encouraging for me today to read this.
@@ifixthings3431 Glad it was encouraging! I'll look forward to seeing your follow-up. Yeah, my friend and I were the first 2 girls to take Woodshop in Jr. High (in the '70s). They enrolled her by mistake; she could either drop class or enlist a friend (me). She chose the latter, and It was the best thing! Gave me enough gumption to troubleshoot stuff ever after- if for no other reason than to talk intelligently to service people, who tend to give worst case scenario so you're grateful to later "only" pay $500 instead of $5,000! I avoid them if possible. Currently stubbornly believing I can clear out my slow main drain, progressing from cheap augers to a serious, monster machine on order. Fiddling around the house as we're sheltering in place in my city due to coronavirus. Take care, Karen. Stay healthy!
Hey Karen thanks for the info and entertainment! Checking out your video so that I may take one trip to the box store. And I will make every effort not to cuss, lol!
Thanks! You have a good day too!
For most of us that watch video like this, next time when you do one, keep tap of the number of hours/time you have spent on the job & indicated that on the video so your viewers) would feel more confidence/good about the time they spend on the job make their work more fulfilling.
Good idea!
Excellent video
Thank you for showing this video. I am doing away with my disposal.
This video is very helpful!!!
Now i need to have mine removed😥, wish me luck
You can do it!
How for you transfer the dishwasher hose that was attached the disposal?
Echo the last comment, you're awesome diy girl! Thanks ; )
This is just what I was looking for!
I am glad it helped!
