99% Tom Sholz. He did all the guitars, bass, organs, keys, recording, mixing, and mastering on equipment that HE invented. Fucking legendary musician and engineer
The band started out as a solo project of lead guitarist/songwriter Tom Scholtz , he pretty much played and recorded most of the instrumentation in his self built basement studio and at M.I.T. where he was a student. After he got record company interest when they heard his demo's , other band members were auditioned and hired, however most of the demos ended up on the first album. Brad Delp provided lead vocals, sadly he died in 2007 committing suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning from burning disposable charcoal barbecues inside a sealed room. He had been suffering from depression. The main riff from More than a feeling , was slightly reworked by Kurt Cobain for Nirvana's Smells like teen spirit.
John Francis yes sir!! It’s been said that lead guitarist Tom Schultz was the mastermind and SOLE musician that played EVERY instrument on the first album and produced it all then when it came time to tour concert is when he hired musicians to fill in onstage. The only thing lead singer did on the first album was add his iconic vocals , but everything else was Tom. This album goes down as my all time favorite album. Such beautiful memories I have because of them.
Not only did they come out the gate sounding like this, but almost every SONG on this album is a straight banger and a classic that still gets used in movies and commercials to this day.
Brad's voice!! Yeah you got it! High energy prog rock. Like Kansas. The talent omg. I'm so glad I subbed you dude. You feelin these. The 70s was LOADED with mega talent.
So...You want to know the story behind this group, well, you have no idea. The story of Boston is pretty fascinating, if you ever get a chance to watch a documentary on it, give it a shot, they have a few on the internet. Short version, from Wikipedia, Tom Schotz came into the recording industry in an unusual way; as an MIT-trained engineer interested in music, he had designed his own recording studio in an apartment building basement to record his own music. The first Boston album was mostly recorded in this basement studio, often using devices he designed and invented himself.
That's one hell of a transition! From MIT to legendary recording artist.... wow! I wonder what spurred him in that direction. But whatever did we are grateful because it gave us incredible records. Gonna see if I can find a documentary! Thanks Allister!
@@abovetheinfluence9361He was an engineer for the Polaroid camera company and I believe had a hand in designing the first instamatic cameras, where the photo comes out and developes before your eyes. The music was a side project of his where almost all of the instrumentation was done by him, then he had a buddy come over to sing. The band came later.
@@2869may I had a similar experience. An old friend of mine called me from Houston and said, a studio by the name of "World Music Entertainment" had heard him sing and was giving him two free hours of studio time, to hear what his voice sounded like recorded. They didn't give him any further instructions or tell him what to sing, they just said "Be here in 7 days at 2:00 pm." He got permission to bring a guitar player and called me up after not keeping in touch for about 3.5 years. I drove two hours to go meet him and discuss what we were going to do, then we sat in the park and started writing songs and by the end of the day, we settled on one song to focus on. I went home and started working on arrangements while he worked on vocals. We just collaborated over the phone for a week, while I put together drum and guitar tracks. Once that was all together and all the arrangements had been agreed upon, I called a bass player to come over to record a bass track and the singer drove out for the vocal tracks and last minute tweeks. When the day arrived, we dumped the drum and bass tracks into the engineer's computer for a backing track, then recorded new guitar and vocal tracks over that. Once we finished, we got a couple of copies and left and didn't think too much about it. We were just excited to get to play in a professional studio. The song was just done as a scratch track and was nowhere near a finished product, but the song was complete and except for my cheesy ass drum programming, it sounded pretty good. The next day we got a call from the studio saying that the main office had been playing the song over the intercom all day and that Mathew Knowles, the owner of the studio and the father of Beyonce, had it forwarded to the headquarters in New York. We were blown away that anyone even paid any attention to it. I believe it was 5 days from the day that we recorded it, that the studio called us again and said that New York had forwarded the song to Sanctuary Records in London and they had just called and said "We need a band photo and bio... like yesterday." What? We didn't even have a band or live near each other. I was on the phone immediately talking to old band mates and had a full band together in 8 hours. A few weeks later the singer moved back and we were writing songs like crazy. We got the photo and the bio sent off, but nothing ever came of it. It sure was pretty exciting for a while though, especially since Sanctuary Records is the largest record label in the world with over 120 major acts, everyone from Slipknot, to Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Elton John. We had a band again for a while and a few songs that briefly got played on local radio, but it didn't last too long before the singer was back into his old meth habits. It really got the best of him and it was probably for the best that the label didn't sign us. Sorry, that was so long.
There were three singers from my generation growing up, that had such an amazing vocal range: Michael Jackson, Brad Delp of Boston, and the late greatest Freddie Mercury. When they hit that soprano ceiling, it blows my mind. I bet they're singing together in heaven. RIP 🙏 and thank you God for letting us hear their amazing voices.
You know, I've never heard anyone say a bad word about this song. It just invites you in and it's glorious. Brad Delp was the lead singer. Amazing voice. Sadly, he suffered from depression, and eventually he took his own life. Such a loss. Another thing: everyone who knew him said he was a great person: friendly, kind, gentle, down to earth, a regular guy and a great neighbor (for example, helping people mow their lawns). When he died, the band's website said "We just lost the nicest guy in rock and roll."
This track is on their self-titled debut album (released in 1976), which held the record for best selling debut for about 10 years. More Boston to check out: "Foreplay/Long Time", "Smokin'", "Hitch a Ride", "Don't Look Back", "A Man I'll Never Be", "The Launch / Cool the Engines". And don't worry, this band doesn't block YT videos.
Tom Sholz, the guitarist, was the lead engineer for Polaroid, and an MIT grad, so he was an engineer before he started recording the first Boston album. He invented a lot of the equipment he used to record the first album in his basement. He composed all the songs, recorded the guitars, bass, keys, organs, mixed, and mastered everything. In his basement. On Tape. He would chop up drum takes and tape them up the way he wanted them if it didn't sound right. No DAWs or anything like that. This was all in the 70s and 80s
I was only a little kid and I THINK one of my brothers had it on an 8 track! Years later I saw them live at The Philadelphia Spectrum. I made a banner out of a bedsheet and an airbrush. This is how I know that the "spaceships" are really upside down guitars, 'cause that is what I painted, quite well I might add. Our local radio station would choose a banner and you could go backstage. I wasn't allowed to sit with my banner...no standing in the aisles, so when they came to choose me...I didn't even know it until I was taking it down and the people sitting there told me. No pagers or phones back then. DEVASTATING!! Anyway, it is still one of the most memorable concerts of my life...backstage passes or not.
Boston was one of the best groups ever! My favorites Beatles Boston Bay City Rollers maybe Queen. When Boston broke up they became rtz... named for their song Return to Zero.

Then, Queensryche (pronounced like Queensrike) There's so many but Silent Lucidity or Jet City Woman. Geoff's vocal range is epic. Take care!
Tom Scholtz played every instrument in the basement recording studio, then edited the songs to form them. He wrote the songs, and only hired a singer when he needed that part done to complete the album. Scholz also invented a few items to get sounds he wanted, and invented volume control for the monster speakers that were used in concerts. He invented the Blackbox on a chord that attached to the guitar to make lots of different sounds without having to push any pedals. Many guys started using these. He also invented the Polaroid camera, which became very popular with all kinds of people. When you took a photo, out would pop a photo that would develop in about five minutes while holding on to it.
The whole Boston debut album is FIRE. I had a friend that worked at a record store who called me and said I HAD to get down to the store and buy this album they had just got in. They were playing it on repeat in the store and people from all the nearby stores were coming over to check it out.
Brad Delp was an amazing vocalist. He has range that was incredible. You look at singers like Mickey Thomas and Brad, and wonder why for some they were ok. Thanks for the reaction. I love watching your reaction videos. You really react from your heart and that's awesome. R.I.P Brad Delp. Reacting to fool around and fell in love by Elvin Bishop would be good. Mickey Thomas got his start there and would eventually sing for Jefferson Starship. He was young when he sang with Elvin Bishop and it's more of a bluesy rock.

I was influenced by my parents and many aunts and uncles on both sides of the family by great music. Brings back such great memories! Boston was the shit!

Tom Shultz (Guitar player) he owns the band, and he is an inventor of the rockman, amp and writes all the music, and lyrics. They are such perfectionist they actually got sued by Sony records for taking to long putting out albums. They put one out every 7 years.
The late drummer, Sib Hashian, was the father-in-law to The Rock. Thanks so much for covering what's probably my favourite classic rock song of all time (or at least one of 😄)! 💯 Subscribed 👏
Whenever I hear this song or Hotel California by The Eagles, I'm taken back to my childhood. Seemed like every amusement park I was at had this playing on the speakers.
Above The Influence another must whether a reaction on here or your own time is Whipping Post by The Allman Bros Band Live from Fillmore East. Rock Jazz Blues fusion at its best.
It could be easy to not fully appreciate bands like Boston in the cluster of fantastic music coming out of your car radio in those times. But Boston could fool you. Start out half listening -"yah, yah, average stuff" - and suddenly you have pulled over to max the volume and pick this thing apart. Music like this prompted grown-ups to scream, "You'll lose your hearing! " Mom, it was totally worth it.
So grateful to have seen them. Brad was an amazing vocalist. RIP Brad. Sweet memories of my first road trip to see Boston in Detroit, 13 row free tickets. Hell yeah worth the 6 hour drive each way. Thanks.
Please review, if you haven't yet, the song "Rock and Roll Band" by Boston, and it talks a little bit about their history. Thanks ( the iconic observation made me feel my age...haha..🤒... But sharp noticing)
Jay, I have just recently come across your channel. I am really enjoying your reactions. You are very thoughtful and insightful. You are not just talkin just because it's a reaction channel and you feel like you should be saying something. You have real takes on the music you are listening to and I do appreciate that! I have been binge watching your videos.
My friend in High School had just bought the brand new Boston album in 1976 and said to me, you got to check this out. He played it for me and my reaction was like WOW, OMG , this is so incredible and such an amazing sound. I never heard anything like that before. It blew me away. We had really good weed too.
The guitar player is the band. He wrote all the music he wrote all the lyrics he played all the instruments except for the drums on the actual recording which he recorded and produced in his basement on the equipment that he built.
Dude, now we old, we can't make it past making breakfast without hearing on EVERY commercial a muzak version of a song I use to dance to in a club. Nothing like seeing a commercial for angina or a healthy heart and going 🤯 "That was my jam" back in the day. 🤣🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
There were only two members. The brainchild who wrote the lyrics and played the instruments including inventing (he was an engineer from MIT) his own sound things for the guitar (that are still in production today) Tom Scholz, and the singer Brad Delp. Scholz recorded everything in his basement for this album, which is their debut album BTW. There are other members but those two are the highlights
This is my go-to song when I put the convertible top down! The entire album was written and produced by Tom Scholz (graduate of MIT) in his basement. Every song was played on mainstream radio!
I'm grateful for the commercials. So many great songs that as time goes by, slips out of memory. But man, when you hear it again and get those memories...awesome sauce!

In terms of Guitar, Drums, and Vocals, this is the Best Song in Rock & Roll. I know that's saying a lot. It was perfectly constructed and is the perfect Rock and Roll song (IMO, of course).
It was a given at the time and in my High School, that when listening to Boston's More than a Feeling that the volume had to be cranked on what ever you were listing to it on. At the time for me, the options were LPs and 8 Track cassettes. LP stereo in mom and dads house, or an 8 Track cassette player I had installed in my Ford Pinto that I had bought from the Mormon Church. (Yikes, I'll never make it through the Pearly Gates) Another band at the time that was best listened to at full blast was 38 Special. Song 1) Caught Up in You or 2) Hold on Loosely.
The tall guitar player in the vid, Tom Scholts, wrote all the music and played all the instruments you hear on the album except the drums. The drummer and the singer Brad Delp were the only other guys you hear. The other guys were added to tour the first album.
Great reaction.... and thanks for the "time travel"....! ;-).... Nice to see Boston getting so much recognition lately.... They were phenomenal.... and Brad Delp's (RIP) pipes were otherwordly.... God bless

This is my favorite Boston song. I do the same thing. I hide in my music and drift away. Working class. I have no idea how they formed. There a song about being a little band out of Boston, called Rock and Roll Band!

Did you notice in the video that you got to see the faces of all the band member except for the lead guitarist in the shiny blue jumpsuit? Well that was Tom Scholz, who by the way has a degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT.
The best-selling debut album for decades.
Just always something about listening to Boston that makes you genuinely feel good
Tom Shultz (Guitar player) he owns the band, and he is an inventor of the rockman, amp and writes all the music, and lyrics.
I miss the days when mustaches were cool. Brad Delp had an amazing voice.
Whenever I hear this song or Hotel California by The Eagles, I'm taken back to my childhood. Seemed like every amusement park I was at had this playing on the speakers.
One of my all time favourite records, thank you
Every song on Boston's first album is either great or really dang good! :-) I also recommend "Peace of Mind" and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight."
Johnny Winter and Edgar Winter "Tobacco Road" live, it's epic and a must listen! Thanks! 😊
Adding it to the list as we speak! Thanks for the recommendation Shari!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 I'll wait....😊
Saw Edgar in concert a few times in the 80s. Profound!!
Above The Influence another must whether a reaction on here or your own time is Whipping Post by The Allman Bros Band Live from Fillmore East. Rock Jazz Blues fusion at its best.
Epic one of the best performances ever...
Eagles - Hotel California. The dual guitar outro will blow you UP! For that matter, Boston - Hitch A Ride has a phenomenal Dual guitar outro as well.
So grateful to have seen them. Brad was an amazing vocalist. RIP Brad. Sweet memories of my first road trip to see Boston in Detroit, 13 row free tickets. Hell yeah worth the 6 hour drive each way. Thanks.
This song just brings me to tears every time I hear it sheesh 😂
Please review, if you haven't yet, the song "Rock and Roll Band" by Boston, and it talks a little bit about their history. Thanks ( the iconic observation made me feel my age...haha..🤒... But sharp noticing)
Jay, I have just recently come across your channel. I am really enjoying your reactions. You are very thoughtful and insightful. You are not just talkin just because it's a reaction channel and you feel like you should be saying something. You have real takes on the music you are listening to and I do appreciate that! I have been binge watching your videos.
This song makes me cry..because I just love music so much..imagine a world without music?? I wouldn't want to live.. great reaction.
That last part where it all kicks off is unreal. You just gotta close your eyes and enjoy.
Did the original band members remain pretty much intact?
@@abovetheinfluence9361 Brad Delp, the singer, died in 2007 but the band is still around
This is my go-to song when I put the convertible top down! The entire album was written and produced by Tom Scholz (graduate of MIT) in his basement. Every song was played on mainstream radio!
Absolutely flawless harmonies. Phenomenal.
Jay - Another Song you’ve heard in commercials - guaranteed- by Bob Seeger: “Like a Rock” ENJOY! Incidentally EVERYTHING BOB SEEGER is GREAT.
Amazing song from an amazing band. Saw them live in Toronto - 70's.....fantastic concert. Thanks so much Jay! Virtual hugs from Ontario, Canada.
I know the had to be an INCREDIBLE experience! More than welcome and virtual hugs right back! 😊
I'm grateful for the commercials. So many great songs that as time goes by, slips out of memory. But man, when you hear it again and get those memories...awesome sauce!
The band that you see in the videos did not record the original album. Here's who did:
Melody Tom Scholz
Lyrics Tom Scholz
Arrangement Tom Scholz
Lead Guitar Tom Scholz
Rhythm Guitar Tom Scholz
Bass Guitar Tom Scholz
Organ Tom Scholz
Acoustic Guitar Tom Scholz
Percussion Jim Masdea
Vocals Brad Delp
All recorded in Tom Scholz's basement.
No synthesizers or computers.
The record company had to put together a band to play the music live. In this video you get to see everyone's face except the lead guitar player. That's Tom Scholz, who BTW has a degree in Electrical Engineering from MIT.
The best-selling debut album for decades.
Oh and these peeps here ⬇️⬆️ giving you great recommendations. Major talents with positive vibe fr... Boston, Chicago and Kansas. Nothing short of great. I promise.
I wonder how many other bands of that time were named after locations lol 😊But going to react to them ALL!!!
@@abovetheinfluence9361 ikr 😃
What a great song!!!! Brad Delp, what a voice !
In terms of Guitar, Drums, and Vocals, this is the Best Song in Rock & Roll. I know that's saying a lot. It was perfectly constructed and is the perfect Rock and Roll song (IMO, of course).
Beth Hart, Am I the One, Live at Paradisio. GOOSEBUMPS guaranteed.
Best song ever!!!! Nothing compares to it.
The drummer is Sib Hashian (r.i.p.) who had the most epic fro in history.
Brilliant band !! Everything they did was epic .. your face listening to this .... ❤️
The guitarist recorded everything in his basement just himself and vocalist. Then he created a band so they can tour :)
Check out - IN THE GHETTO by Elvis Presley
Oh.....and almost forgot a suggestion to react to: Stevie Ray Vaughan - "Texas Flood"
@longtailrat Yes! The best!
Most people don't know that every member of the band have advanced degrees
Amazing to think that Tom Scholz didn't start learning how to play guitar until he was 21 years old.
an album where every song is terrific
the well runs deep on this music from the 60's and 70's, so we have lots of suggestions
Love this, one of my all time favourite songs, have to have this blasting from the speakers 🔊
I would say I love the way your reaction! I feel that same way! Love you my brother!
Great reaction.... and thanks for the "time travel"....! ;-).... Nice to see Boston getting so much recognition lately.... They were phenomenal.... and Brad Delp's (RIP) pipes were otherwordly.... God bless
This was when bands could play instruments and sing.
My housecleaning song(s)/album!!!!! wooo hooooo! Thanks for pumping me up so I can go get dinner. lol This band carried me through some very confusing days in my life and it brought me out the other side. Thanks, Jay for your reaction. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Take care and be well. Peace.
This song has sooooo much energy and passion to it! Has me pumped up too!!! lol Appreciate you watching!😊
@@abovetheinfluence9361 The whole album has bangers, not one bad song. I think it was the biggest debut album in it's time.
I totally enjoy seeing a reaction like this to a song I’ve heard so many times. Awesome.
One of a few reactors who actually listen to the music.
There first album was completely recorded in one of the band members garage.
Boston is really just 2 guys. Tom Scholz and singer Brad Delp (RIP) this song and the the album were recorded in Tom's studio basement.
Another very popular song is foreplay/long time
The band that you see in the videos did not record the original album. Here's who did:
Melody Tom Scholz
Lyrics Tom Scholz
Arrangement Tom Scholz
Lead Guitar Tom Scholz
Rhythm Guitar Tom Scholz
Bass Guitar Tom Scholz
Organ Tom Scholz
Acoustic Guitar Tom Scholz
Percussion Jim Masdea
Vocals Brad Delp
All recorded in Tom Scholz's basement.
No synthesizers or computers.
Scholz has a Masters in Electrical engineering from MIT
Int his video Scholz is in light blue playing lead guitar, the only face you don't get to see.
BTW Maryann was Scholz's older cousin. He had a crush on her when he was 8.
You REALLY need to react to Foreplay/Long Time.
The best-selling debut album for decades.
Jay.. I have been so enjoying reactions to the music I grew up with. You were made to do these.. you really break down the music.. keep them coming.
I love playin this tune😎👍🎶🎸🎶
As someone who grew up with this great music I just have to say, that the satin pants suit can not go unnoticed! 🤣
Hi bro.. good week-end to you 😎👍 Good one from Boston 🎶🎸 When you can , react to Supertramp - Give a little bit , or Logical song , or school or goodbye stranger .. 😎👍😁 or Breakfast in America ..
Dude , you have to see their bio. You won't believe it
Check out these other two songs that play back to back called “foreplay/long time” by Boston
This song never gets old. Such an awesome voice brad delp had. Sadly, he died in 2007. RIP Brad.
You should really check out the band Styx " Renegade", you will love it.
Great Band.... Great album!! 👍🏻
Loving your reaction!
Some suggestions for more reactions:
Freebird, Lynard Skynard...Oaklands live.....long but worth it....amazing guitars solo...
Chris Stapleton ....I Was Wrong, Austin City Limits live...
Adam Lambert and Queen, Who Wants To Live Forever, Isle of Wight 2016 Live...
We would love you to do more reactions. Love your stuff.
This is my favorite Boston song. I do the same thing. I hide in my music and drift away. Working class. I have no idea how they formed. There a song about being a little band out of Boston, called Rock and Roll Band!
ruclips.net/video/qCsJ1QB-PTM/видео.html
Telelgraph road. (. Live). Dire straits. And brothers in arms. You won't be disappointed.
Love this group
You haven't done much Pink Floyd.... I don't know if you're ready for some stuff of The Division Bell album..... but if you think you are, "Wearing The Inside Out" "A great day for Freedom" "High Hopes" "Poles Apart"
And a David Gilmour solo song "No Way Out Of Here"
