A really cool thing worth noting with SnS is that you can X+A attack into a ledge to climb up it with an attack in the air. This allows you to mount monsters while they are above you. I believe SnS is the only class that can do this.
all i had to do is press A after climbing a ledge and i found myself doing that attack, also you can preform another aerial attack after both forward dash aerial and climbing aerial making 2 aerial hits in one combo!
I've spent 250+ hours with this game as a SnS main, have gotten to G*2, and I did not know about holding A to charge a jump attack after the back-hop. I am glad I have watched this video.
You forgot the rising aerial slice. When you walk up to a ledge with your weapon drawn, press A as you climb up, you will slice upwards wich will count as a mounting attack and after that you can attack again on your way down by simply pressing X as if in a normal air attack. You can also do this attack if your weapon is sheathed by walking up to a ledge and pressing X+A as you climb up. Also the aerial attack where you jump of a ledge by pressing X+A can also hit twice in the air, one time when you go slightly up, and once again on your way down. As long as there is a ledge nearby, the SnS is arguebly better for mounting than the insect glaive.
Dude your videos are so good. I love your tutorial videos. You're very thorough and easy to understand. Please, please keep it up, you're doing a fantastic job. Thank you :)
Nice tutorial. Just to add something here as a main SnS hunter. If you have your weapon sheathed and after climbing up a step you press X+A you perform a jump attack and can hit again the monster in the air. with your weapon unsheathed just press A after climbing a step to perform the same move. Or just press X+A to perform the step attack but instead jumping from a ledge, to step up a small ledge, you'll jump These 2 makes the SnS the 2nd best mounting weapon.. To every player thinking "I prefer large hitting weapon because this seems not a weapon that deals damage" well guys you have to think twice. Depending the monster, I get better hunting times than with other weapons. The mobility and elemental damage of this thingy is just incredible... and SO MUCH FUN when you can setup traps, bombs, whatever better than the other weapons.
You missed the best thing about this weapon: you can mount monsters above you instead of just below you. Use X+A into a ledge, whether you're going up or down it. This means _any_ time there's a ledge between you and the monster, it's a mounting opportunity.
You missed the extra hit on the jump attack (2 hit combo), the second hit on the shield bash (two hit combo) and the ability to jump upwards from a ledge and slash. Good Videos, but i've noticed you've missed a lot of useful information in most of yoru tutorials, I recommend people watch Gajinhunter's videos for the fully fleshed out tutorials that include everything.
when pressing x+a off a ledge to do the special jump attack you can press x again for a follow up hit. Also press x+a at the bottom of a short ledge you can climb up without a promp. That lets you do a jumping attack from the bottom of the ledge. Real useful.
I just starded the game a little while ago and was surprised at how useful this was. I recently was stuck on the first seregios with my hammer, and I just couldn't hit the little bastard. I had the idea to take a little break from trying that and get the zingore hunt-a-thon to get the lightning sword and shield. A million quests later I got the zingore sword and shield and tried the seregios again with it. Holy shit, it couldn't get me off it's ass if it tried. Killed the bastard in 20 minutes and using less than a third of my healing items (which for me is impressive), getting almost all that I needed for the seregios hammer. May have to get more swords and shields for more of the mobile enemies that hammer is bad against. I definitely like the sword and shield better than the longsword which was what I started with. The sword and shield seems to me like the safest melee weapon because of it's short animations and block, so you can get out of many sticky situations on a boss you haven't memorized yet.
atwitchyferret How many other weapon types have you tried? Each one changes the way this game is played alot and they are all well balanced. Though I have to say without the circle pad pro or a New3DS gunning can be a bit rough.
JustCozItsMe I've tried the hammer out the most and is what I enjoy using the most. I used the longsword for the majority of the low levels, which when I was able to get the buff strikes off was good, but too inconsistent on many bosses. I've got a decent horn but haven't gotten used to it besides memorizing songs. Probably going to wait on the horn until I get the maestro skill on an armor set. I did a demo of the switch-axe and decided it wasn't for me. I used the sword and shield and liked the safeness of it. The reason I like the hammer is just that it's so satisfying to smash enemies in the face repeatedly and knock them out. Weapons I plan to try out are pretty much everything melee except for dual swords. I don't usually like doing ranged weaponry in a game like this because it would make me ignorant to a lot of it's attack patterns. That's how it was with Dark Souls for me and there it made me bad at fighting close quarters. I'm still planning on getting a circle pad pro sometime because the insect glaive looks fun to use and was hard to aim without it. Tried it because it looked like it would work well against the frenzied deviljho I'm stuck on.
atwitchyferret I didnt really play any range in Dark Souls so I cant really compare it properly but in MH4U with the way aiming works combined with the way monsters move you still have to look for windows in the monsters patterns to properly get the dps. While you will not have to worry as much as melee but with critical distance you are usually close enough to need to pay attention,I have actually learned a few things about some monsters patterns from playing gunner thats helped me against those monsters when I was melee. I completely agree about the hammer, theres just something special about getting those KOs thats so satisfying. Smash, thump, slam and the monster is wondering if anybody got the plates on the truck that hit them. I havent actually gotten my CPP yet,I only really got into gunner in the last few days and I had been on the line about buying it for general MH comfort as well as fixing the camera problem that smears Majoras Mask for me,Id have no problem with MM3D at all if it wasnt for the cam. Anyway,Im saying that because I it actually hadnt crossed my mind how much a CPP would have a pretty nice benefit for IG. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. From what Ive heard,CPP is a unbelievable improvement in just general QoL for MH4U and it makes being a gunner insanely better. I believe it,touch pad cam controls for aiming make me want to stab my screen.....Its so uncomfortable after extended periods and just doesnt feel right from the start.
atwitchyferret Got the CPP earlier today, all the hype it gets is completely founded. I highly recommend you picking one up,best deal I found was on Amazon for around $14.
One more thing, if you do a running attack towards a ledge that's low enough, if your spacing is correct, the hunter will jump up the ledge and then get some air at the top and do a slash on the way up and on the way down. Pretty cool way to mount monsters when you're on the wrong side of a ledge.
One thing for SnS that You missed is that you can also do the X+A move going up a small ledge (One you can run up) to do a jump attack as well. Makes SnS pretty good at mounting!
I am loving your videos on the weapon tutorials. They are very informative and simple (if that is a possible combination)! You say to leave a comment for the next possible weapon tutor, I was hoping you would do a Cat video. I know they are weapons, in the conventional sense, but they CAN be seen as weapons, decoys, tools, etc. So, doesnt have to be the next vid, but would you consider doing a video on the cat allys?
Hey spida, glad you like the videos! :) And I will be doing videos on cats as soon as the game comes out, along with videos on all other monster hunter mechanics - trapping, crafting, farming, etc. so stay tuned for that :)
You missed one attack: roll into a ledge from the bottom and press A, you will do an aerial attack on the monster standing ABOVE! Press A again and it gives another aerial attack, so in essence a two-hit aerial combo. Really good for mounting.
Just some things that were missed. R+X is a good opener for your skills. If you R+X X X A A (Starting A combo before the swipe down) you have a fast combo that does not move your character that you can roll out of at virtually any time. You should probably use X+A X X A A online though, because it gives you Feet meaning you won't be knocked down by other weapons hitting you for most of your combo. The charge attack counts as an evade. You can X + A off a cliff, and attack TWICE for more mount damage You can X + A up a cliff and also attack twice for more mount damage. The third X is really something you want to avoid though, it has low damage and cannot be evaded out of. You should basically never use shield slam online as it knocks people around a lot.
You forgot a couple of things. You can do the regular attack while jumping even when you jump with X+A, two attacks in a row! Also, you can press A to jump when you go up and edge.
I never really gave Sns much thought. I had believed it to be weak but I've been starting to accept it and find myself infatuated. Such a great weapon.
You missed out an attack. if you do the X and A attack while going up a ledge you can press X to do a rising slash attack that counts towards a mount, and X again to do a downward slash (which counts towards a mount)
You forgot to cover ledge hops. If you dash attack up a ledge or roll up a ledge you can hop in the air while doing a vertical up slash you can also follow through with another vertical downward slash. Great video though.
You missed one move try and press A and B at the same time but close to the Clift a small Clift you can also slash up a up world slash but you got to stay at the lower level of the Clift while facing the Clift
You want to avoid doing an x+x+x combo in multiplayer since that shield bash before the downward slash can send teammates flying. I usually go with x+x+a+a+a then dodge roll or continue combo with the draw back attack.
One thing I noticed when playing with the SnS. Some zones have little ramps and if you use the X,A or un sheath at them you kinda ramp off of them to a air combo.
He forgot to mention that if climb up a ledge and press X you will launch yourself up into a jump attack. Useful for mounting monsters that are on a ledge above you.
I personally love the sword and shield, it does both cutting and impact damage so if your in a tight spot of eithr cutting a creatures parts off (pause) or beating bony parts off of it you can do both, it's my favorite weapon, my least favorite is the long sword, it's a little to not powerful and it's combos kimdof aren't me, whats your favorite? (Everybody can answer if they want, but give reasoning so I may understand) thank you.
The sword and shield weapon sets look so cool, but I hate how useless the actual shield is. I kind of wish the shield was more involved in Defense rather than a last resort thing. Maybe even a counter attack similiar to what the Lance has.
+Nash Gray you have to finish the cowardly palico quest line, hes in cheeko sands. the final quest is a quest to hunt akantor. after you finish the quest you go back and draw the sword, then upgrade it to get heroic blade.

Thanks for the great video. I absolutely love this game. First time monster slayer. This game is soooo awesome but has a huge learning curve which I love. Does anyone have any other recommendations for a Noob Weapon to use. Thanks again for the awesome video!!!!!!!!! Also does anyone have a good website a noob can learn from?
For learning about the combat system i recommend you watching some skilled players on youtube. Its entertaining and you will quickly learn much stuff from it. About the weapon i wouldnt say there isnt any real "noob-weapon" in this game because everyone likes a different playstyle. I for example started with MH3U and instantly picked the Greatsword because i liked its high damage and charging/punishing system so you should just try out which weapon suits you and your playstyle the best. :) (For MH4U I found the GS especially useful because you can just hop on every Monster and do a shitload of damage when it falls down :D)
Chrfow777 With the mounting system, weapons like the GS, as said above, have been illuminated with even more light. The amount of damage it does to an immobilised monster is just absolutely INSANE! That being said, item set switching is very much vital, especially in this edition. So you can pretty much bet you'll end up using a majority of the weapons depending on what monster you're up against (which is fantastic since there's a lot of new hunters coming along). About websites. I'd recommend you watch videos on things you have no experience with, and use forums to discuss strategies and overall questions on things you're not fully adept to. The reason I say it's best to watch, is because MH is a game about seeing and doing. So if you're still a bit intimidated to jump in, you can at least have a perspective and use that in a field, so you don't immediately disappoint yourself, or your friends.
Also remember that there is no shame in losing a hunt! This is not a game where your character gets stronger from hunting, it's a game where you, the player, become a better and smarter hunter after each hunt! Remember to not get cocky, stay sharp, and learn from your mistakes!
These were certainly just the bare bones basic weapon videos. Why would you upload them if they don't cover everything a weapon can do? Isn't that the point of a tutorial series?
2024 and I'm playing MH4U on my 3ds and it's a banger! Lots of cool monsters that weren't in Rise :) Thanks for the weapon tip vids!
A really cool thing worth noting with SnS is that you can X+A attack into a ledge to climb up it with an attack in the air. This allows you to mount monsters while they are above you. I believe SnS is the only class that can do this.
Yes! All true statements! I wish I could like this comment more, so it would go to the top of the page so people dont miss out on this info.
Was surprised he didn't mention that.
all i had to do is press A after climbing a ledge and i found myself doing that attack, also you can preform another aerial attack after both forward dash aerial and climbing aerial making 2 aerial hits in one combo!
Xero Genesis Yea! You deserve a cookie! o3o
I’ve mounted more monsters like that than with insect glaibe
forgot just an important thing m8: when u perform the charged attack, you can actually slightly correct its direction, very useful during long combos.
I've spent 250+ hours with this game as a SnS main, have gotten to G*2, and I did not know about holding A to charge a jump attack after the back-hop.
I am glad I have watched this video.
Wait what about the step-up jump attack? X+A when walking up a ledge?

I thought that the jumping attack was done where you do the charging slash with X + A towards a ledge to launch yourself up.
Alyks Syriece nope, that doesnt do anything at all. youre gonna have to actually walk up to it in order to jump.
Wopsie No, you know the charging slash that you do with X+A? If you do that at a ledge, it launches you up.
Dude your videos are so good. I love your tutorial videos. You're very thorough and easy to understand. Please, please keep it up, you're doing a fantastic job. Thank you :)
You can also use the Jumping Slash in the opposite direction of a small ledge to do a reverse ledge attack
Nice tutorial. Just to add something here as a main SnS hunter. If you have your weapon sheathed and after climbing up a step you press X+A you perform a jump attack and can hit again the monster in the air.

should i get monster hunter 4 ultimate or monster hunter generations
What armor set is that? it looks amazing
It would seem he didn't go over one 9f my favorite features of the SnS. Jumping attacks moving up a ledge.
what armor you have in that video?
Nersylla x
The sword and shield weapon sets look so cool, but I hate how useless the actual shield is. I kind of wish the shield was more involved in Defense rather than a last resort thing. Maybe even a counter attack similiar to what the Lance has.
Speed Is Key!!!
JACKSEPTICEYE FTW!!
I thought nobody caught that
Awesome Video (: thank you
speeeeeeed is keeeeeey!!!!!!!!!!
Does the jump attack have mounting capabilities (without a cliff)
No I don’t think so
Could you do a tutorial on how to get the Heroic Blade?
A bit l8 m8 this video is a year old.
+Nash Gray you have to finish the cowardly palico quest line, hes in cheeko sands. the final quest is a quest to hunt akantor. after you finish the quest you go back and draw the sword, then upgrade it to get heroic blade.
what sword is that? is it in mh gen too?
Whats the. Sword and shield in the thumbnail
Does anyone know if you can "over charge" the charge attack like how it could happen with the great sword?
What armor is he wearing
Does anyone know what armour this is?
What weapon an armour is in use there? Looks awesome!
Plikky Dee That is the Scaly Sword. Sadly, it's not that great. If you're in a group, pack some bombs in your pack and blow that sucker up once you put it to sleep. Yet again, in low rank randoms, you probably can't run a sleep setup without having someone attack a K.O.ed monster.
Delicious Anatomy
Damn :/
Delicious Anatomy But this weapon, however, is the G-Rank counterpart, as with all of the equipment in the demo, just scaled down to match the low rank monster. But I do not think that the demo weapon can actually put monsters to sleep, sadly.
the actual nerscylla sns which is what that weapon is made from is actually pretty good, it has decent raw, sleep ailment, a lot of white sharpness and 1 slot when full upgraded
Yeah he is right , in fact im working my way to get the scaly sword right now. #SleepyJuice
But if you pick raw damage, you have normal damage because the monster can't have a resistance.
I hate how the sword goes through the shield when sheathed. But overall very good weapon to use.
you forgot that you can also jump attack up a ledge
Hehe... if there is an elemental extra to it and the raw dmg is similair to the weapon you originally wanted to make, i should pick the elemental anyways
every single game i try to master sns, but i guess i am for longsword
what weapon is that?
The sword he is using in the demo I have
In the real game it's from the giant
Spider thing
Nersylla
For some reason I never come across hunters he use the sword and shield online or is it just me?
The next MH on PsV one day one day....
+Alienshade
Wont happen... Nintendo got a Contract with capcom... also Nintendo Treats and Advertise and Helps Capcom way much than sony ever did to Monster hunter...
Get a 3DS ... its not like its expensive and got anyway way better games than vita
what armour set is that? nerscylla?, but mine doesn't have a cape though
S. Magala
Nerscylla X
It's the G-Rank Nerscylla set, the armor that the demo supplies.
What's with sword and shield and capes?
:p
What armor is that
low rank nercylla
nice
this guide is incomplete

So if you're still a bit intimidated to jump in, you can at least have a perspective and use that in a field, so you don't immediately disappoint yourself, or your friends.
Chrfow777 Woah, that was pretty long, sorry! xD
Also remember that there is no shame in losing a hunt! This is not a game where your character gets stronger from hunting, it's a game where you, the player, become a better and smarter hunter after each hunt! Remember to not get cocky, stay sharp, and learn from your mistakes!
In hindsight, you should've disabled your palicoes while you recorded.
The constant meowing on the background is kinda irritating.
As a longsword purist I find it offensive to recommend anything else
Ruined my favorite weapon. That shitty dash attack is godawful compared to the jump slash.
I hate it.
Oh well, guess it's Lance time.

Can this please come back to playstation where it belongs, arekkz would u rather play on 3ds or vita??? Cause it needs to be on vita.
I would love to be able to play MH on my Vita, that'd be amazing, but I enjoy it either way :)
***** true but I don't have a 3ds so I just play a lot of prtbl 3rd on my vita, I do want a 3ds though...
MalcolmrathalosX why would capcom release mh on a dead console
midpoint77 Especially a game as popular as monster hunter is in Japan.
Alyks Syriece The series is super famous in Japan and it's even more famous because it's on the 3DS. The 3DS is super popular in Japan.
These were certainly just the bare bones basic weapon videos. Why would you upload them if they don't cover everything a weapon can do? Isn't that the point of a tutorial series?
