  • For years Susan was disgusted with her belly fat until her ancestors smacked some sense into her in a sweat lodge. Hear about how Susan’s experience in losing her mother to plastic surgery at a young age changed her perspective on beauty, self-love, and forgiveness.
Susan Lieu is a nationally-acclaimed Vietnamese American author, playwright, and performer who tells stories that refuse to be forgotten. A daughter of nail salon workers, she took her autobiographical solo theatre show 140 LBS: How Beauty Killed My Mother on a national tour with sold out premieres and accolades from L.A. Times, NPR, and American Theatre. Eight months pregnant, she premiered her sequel Over 140 LBS at ACT Theatre. Within one year, she gave 60 performances to over 7,000 people.
Her award-winning work has been featured at Bumbershoot, Wing Luke Museum, The Moth Mainstage, On The Boards, and more than a dozen universities. She has developed new work at numerous residencies including Hedgebrook, Vashon Artist Residency, Mineral School, and Millay Arts. Susan is co-host of The Model Minority Moms podcast. She is an alumnus of Harvard College, Yale School of Management, and Coro. Her forthcoming memoir, The Manicurist’s Daughter (Celadon) is her first book.

Culturally mediated abuse is still abuse. Just because something is rooted in tradition, or being tied to one's culture, or heritage does not make it excusable or okay. This doesn't get talked about enough.

It’s not about eating less, exercising more. I have a beautiful cousin who does the triathlon/iron man most years & based on what some of these comments say she should be very, very skinny. She trains all year round whether she does the triathlon or not. She is “Rubenesque” & again, beautiful. It’s her body. It’s the body of her family. And they are all very active people. Her grandmother is 96 has the same body type so she must be doing something right. (actually, most of those on both sides of my family live into their 80’/90’s.) Man, some of you are very judgmental & that says more about you than it does her. You’re buying into our society’s B.S.

As a former smoker I can agree with her logic. My parents smoked, and when my father wanted to change, and took a shortcut pill to stop smoking and then he got a treadmill in the living room, got on it and within 3 days he had a heart attack and died. So me and my mother sit on our porch and avoid physical activity and are proud how our family all smoke and sound like a hand saw when we speak, we've made peace with the problem and enjoy sharing sharing stories of our heritage and remembering my father. ❤

You come from a long line of women who likely had a mummy tummy (this is a proud and endearing term some of my friends use). Our food system is toxic pushing aside the fruits mother earth has provided in favour of the processed food that profit old men in board rooms yet advertised with by models.
The 'unnarriageable' term is hideous and toxic, my take is it is about being the best parent you can and an even better grandparent.

The reason we need a "Women" branch of Ted Talk is because women need to be able to make it about everything else but the problem and an obvious solution that might require effort and taking responsibility. Instead of responsibility we need rationalizing. Instead of common sense we need sad stories to make us tear up and in the end we need to not feel bad about the problem, and not feel any responsibility for ignoring it. The top comment completely unwound her entire dramatic story telling session.

Once i heard someone “Do not trust a man without a visible bicep vein! He lies for himself every day. He want to be in his best shape and choose to do nothing.” How true!
This positivity bs is really misleading! They are just do not want to cause emotional distress and for anybody and that’s it. Heavy bullying is shameful, but notice someone is out of shape is evolutionary useful. Lazy people overuse the healthcare from the real ill ones. They selfish not giving their best version to their mates and undisciplined.

This certainly didn’t go to the right audience… if you don’t like being bigger, then change but don’t put others down just because they don’t want to adhere to your standards.
Nobody actually cares about the health of other people, they just don’t like looking at bigger people. If it bothers you, keep it to yourself.
