      I've got a Savage .308 Win what's the comparison to the 6.5 Cred on overall effective kill range and what's the comparison on the drop between 600-1200 yards.(of course you can hit steel at a mile but not much punch) I've heard the 6.5 is effective to a 1000-1200 tops. I've heard the drop is minimal to about 600-800 yards. I've been looking to get a more modern rifle and the 6.5 Norton caught my eye. I'm here because the 300 win mag is on my heart heavy 😆 I'd like something effective to a mile but being realistic that's pushing any creed. I really like .338 Lapua but the round price and weight of such a rifle doesn't make it right for everything. I think the .300 is lighter and overall a bit shorter, no doubt cheaper round to fire. By chance have you used any of the modern ATN X-Sight Night vision 4k scopes. I think those suckers are sweet and appear to have good reviews. The tech package and ergonomics seem real slick n streamlined.

    I use 230 grain Berger OTM Hybrids. Use heavy for calibre, and the 300 will Bury the 6.5.
    Use what you like, but 178 grain from a 300 Win Mag, isn't anywhere near giving it its full potential.
    The new 230 SMK has a BC of 0.8.
    Each to their own, but I really love my 300 Win Mag.

    Judging by the comments, I must be the only one that knows the 6.5 was meant to mimic the trajectory of 300wm but with less recoil for competition use. Also in this video and in the 308comparison it bugs me that he's using the optimal weight bullet for 6.5 but the other calibers are light for caliber with horrible BCs.

    • @daltonv5206
      @daltonv5206 6 лет назад

      Texas Plinking I think 6cm is going to have a hard time gaining traction. It doesn't have as much hunting traction as 6.5cm. Some people love hunting medium game with 6mm/243 but for a lot of people it doesn't give them the "knockdown" power that they want. They have to overcome that stigma if they want it to be successful

    • @jeffreyvicks7181
      @jeffreyvicks7181 6 лет назад

      Dalton v , agreed on the hunting. The 6.0 Creedmore is more of a target round, a lot of PRS shooters use this round due to its high BC bullet, low wind drift and low bullet drop at long range.

    I guess bullet technology improved a lot since this vid. 300 WM now can get 250 grain a-tips with a 0.80 BC if you hand load. I believe you need a 8.5-9 twist thought for those. But even 220 grainers with 1:10 have some 0.65 + BC bullets now readily available

  • @Britishshooter
    @Britishshooter 5 лет назад +2

    We can have lots of different calibres in Britain too but each has to licensed for a reason. Suppressors are totally normal and in fact the Police usually remind you to apply (no extra cost) for one for each calibre as it is the norm here.

    If you want to compare the two take the best that both can offer.
    I own both calibers in identical guns.
    Load the best that bergers got in both and the 300 will swallow the creed whole at extended ranges.
    Yes the creedmoor is more enjoyable to shoot.
    Does it outperform it? No.

    When I first got my DTA SRS with a 338lm, 300wm, and 308 barrel's, I spent like 6 months shooting nothing but the .338 Lapua mag. One day I couldn't find .338lm anywhere so decided to try the multi barrel system for the first time. I ended up shooting 300wm that day. At I believe was $1.95 a round I had an epiphany. I could shoot twice as much at the same cost, and have a slightly less sore shoulder at the end of the day. I suddenly fell in love with 300wm. I still don't think the .308 barrel has ever been installed, let alone shot, but I do shoot that rifle pretty often still. I love me some .338 Lapua mag, but I don't mind playing with a little 300 win mag on those days I want to shoot more than 30-40 rounds.

    I understand where he was coming from. Shoot similar loads and see how they do. But... and there always seems to be a "but" doesn't there... But he needs to use loads that will make each gun shine. Yet I have to say, it was a nicely done video. Keep up the good work. But next time don't worry about identical rounds, just shoot what works best.

      At the altitude I've been shooting alot at lately (6000ft) 6.5cm is at 1500 ft/lbs energy @ 700 yards it's also over 1000 ft/lbs energy @ 1100 yards and is supersonic to 1940 yards. Unless you pulled a once in a lifetime bull Moose tag the 300WM just isn't needed anymore and mine collects dust.

  • @TheFullNeilson

    If you are shooting anything lighter than 210 grains out of a 300 Win mag you are wasting the potential of the caliber. You are comparing some of the best loads from a 6.5 Creedmoor to some mediocre loads for a 300 Win mag.

A side from the fact that the 300WM cost me twice as much to run and 300wm's standard twist is 1/10 with bullets that require 1/9 those loads get me very little gain in drop, and wind drift and they only buy me an extra 200 yards more in both supersonic range and range with decent hit probability on the size targets I'm shooting than a 6.5cm handloaded 150gr SMK with a BC of 0.713 @ 2820 FPS.

      I disagree, I have had a 300wm for years it’s fun to shoot but I don’t love it. The recoil gets old and you can’t shoot it all day like the creedmoor. You start getting trigger flinch with the 300wm. I have had the 6.5 for a few years and I think it’s a far superior round than the 300wm.

    Hey Tex, I’m a Marine Corps officer, new to shooting. I want to get into some longer range precision shooting, and you definitely know your stuff. What is a good rifle to get started with, either bolt action or semi automatic? I have a budget of about $1500. Thanks Tex, love your videos

    • @TexasPlinking
      @TexasPlinking  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks Isaac! $1,500 can get you a real solid long range rifle. If going bolt, a couple good contenders would be a Bergara B-14, Ruger Precision Rifle, Legacy Sports/Howa has some sweet options, etc. As for semi, it'll probably cost a bit more to get an effective rig, really good valve would be an Aero Precision M5E1 though.

    I’m trying to decide between Ruger Precision rifle .300 WIN MAG or the Ruger Precision rifle 6.5 Creedmoor for 3 uses: recreational target practice, hunting, and prepping for WTSHTF, in that order. I already own a 30-06, Sig 5.56 rifle, M&P AR-22 rifle, 12 gauge shotgun, and a number of pistol calibers including multiple 9mm’s, a .45, and a .380. Which would you recommend and why?

    • @edcarolina87
      @edcarolina87 6 лет назад +2

      'Tikka T3x Tac A1 if you have the funds. Much better platform than the Ruger Precision. When you are ready to upgrade to a different chassis system like a Cadex, MPA, or KRG you can just take the Tikka action out and drop it in. The Ruger Precision is sort of its own animal. There are so many solid options on the market now outside of the Ruger precision rifle, not that it is a bad rifle, but just that there are really good options for the same amount of money. Tikka T3x CTR, Bergara, Howa, T/C Performance Center (Smith & Wesson), etc.
      As far as caliber, the 6.5 creedmoor and .300 winmag are on pretty different ends of the spectrum, as the 6.5 is a short action based around the .308 cartridge and the .300winmag is a long action belted magnum round. The .300winmag is going to have more power with solid ballistics, with much more recoil due to it firing such a large projectile that is going to be much more expensive to shoot unless you reload. The 6.5 creedmoor has less recoil than a .308 and equivalent ballistics, but not as much stopping power (plenty for hunting), plus the factory Hornady, Federal, Federal American Eagle, and Winchester Ammo isn't expensive. The 140gr BTHP American Gunner is less than .94 a shot.
      If you are looking for something with the power of .300wm I would personally just go up to .338 Lapua Magnum. If you are looking for recreational/hunting/prepper gun then I would actualy say go 7.62NATO/.308 due to the ammunition availability and for the fact that it is perfectly fine out to 700-800 yd engagement distances far passed those you'd hunt or shoot a "zombie" with. It can reach 1000 easily but your kinda losing energy at that point. If it were me, I'd suggest the Tikka T3x Tac A1 or T3x CTR in 6.5 or .308, the Bergara Premier LRP, or the Bergara BMP or the T/C Performance Center LRR in .308 or 6.5 creedmoor. All 3 are solid rifles that are based around the short action .308. Another positive of starting with .308 is you can get it, shoot it for a lot less money, train more, then when you burn the barrel out you can rebarrel it for 6.5 creedmoor without changing anything but the barrel.. magazine, bolt all stays the same.

      @bw83m94 6 лет назад

      I'm looking at the Hawkeye Long Range, also from Ruger. It's a .300 win mag. Usually retails $950, and it seems a better platform than the precision, which I didn't even know they made a .300 in (thought it was creed or .308). Prefer the stock on it, it comes with Mlok compatible, great trigger, and I believe it's 5R rifled as well.
      Between calibers I'd go .300 any day of the week. It's simply a more versatile rifle, and 300 is capable of performing out past a mile loaded heavy. Should add I reload, so the versatility of the round is solidly a plus for me, and any increase in price per round is negligible. The only thing 6.5 does better is it's lower recoil, and while it certainly has its merits it's over-hyped.

    How would you rate the image quality of your Steiner versus other high end glass? I have the same scope and the mechanical function has been outstanding, but I'm not sold on the clarity. • @TexasPlinking
      @TexasPlinking  6 лет назад

      Yes mechanical function is 10/10 in my opinion. As for clarity, I am very pleased with it considering the price. For nearly double the price, you do get slightly better clarity with a NF or S&B. If money is no object, go ahead and spend the extra $1,300+ dollars just to have the set up you desire. For me, it's all the clarity I'll need for my long range shots.

    Great video! 6.5 Creedmoor vs 6.5 Lapua would perhaps be a more suitable comparison simply due to the real world applications. Creed and Lap for Varmint, Win Mag for like...Bear?! Not the same thing.
    Also, Creed vs Lap you'd really need to compare Load Development with similar weight projectiles (40 Creed against 40 Scenar). Find similar velocity nodes in a Ladder and then you are comparing apples for apples. Unfortunately, you're going to find that you've now eliminated the 2 greatest factors in variation between brands/species - the harmonic and factory powder.
    Still, great video!
