I never understood the hype about the Creedmore. It does nothing that the 6.5x55 has not done and can't do better for 100 years. Personally I'll stick with the swede
Im new to shooting long range but I am a machinist, is this a safety issue?Or will the ammo just not go in the rifle?
That's a good question Ralph Carey. Thanks for asking. Yes, it can be a safety issue. With this or any ammo/rifle it becomes a safety issue if the round has to be forced into the chamber which could cause discharge, or after being forced can't be extracted and isn't fired. Always use safe practices in this or any caliber. Good shooting.
I had a factory savage 6.5 creedmoor shoot 3/8" groups with factory hornady ammunition. Spent less than 1000 on the rifle scope and mounts killed a few deer with excellent results gave it to my brother for a Christmas present a few years ago. Its still shooting tiny groups and killing deer. Best money I ever spent on a rifle accuracy wise. I've spent thousands on rifles and scopes and nothing has beat it yet.
How am I just now finding this channel? The wealth of knowledge this man possesses is hard to find.

My Savage in 6.5 is jammed into rifling at 2.875 with 140ELD. And that “dummy round” will fit in my AI pattern accurate mag. So far it has fit and fed Hornady, Winchester, and Starline without any issues. Whatever issues existed seem to have been addressed.
Love my 6.5 Creedmore, wouldn't trade it for anything. Owned a 270 and 30-06, but prefer the 6.5. I believe everyone has to choose the gun that fits your style, there are no wrong choices. The ammo I pick up otc is all I need, it's already match grade.

@Dick Dick Like what? I don't know anyone who is hunting big game with the wrong gun? They're are some that believe a 6.5 Creed shouldn't be used for elk. That's laughable though since a 6.5 caliber has been used successfully on elk forever.

@@velie can you take an elk with a 6.5 yes. Would it be my first choice absolutely not. Especially past 300 yards. 7mm-08 would be better option honestly. I've seen people lose elk all good shots but lacked the energy. 6.5 is an excellent option for deer size and down. But if n a pinch can take an elk if you get close enough. It was designed to be a target caliber. People love to throw fake facts on it like it's magic when it's definitely not. Much more better options out there. I even own and load for the creed. The 6.5 PRC would be a better option for elk but have even seen those struggle against bears

Just experienced the same issue with a Savage Axis. I am a fairly experienced reloader and had to trim and full length resize some 6.5 brass before the empty cases would even work through the action. Gun isn't grouping well either but it may be a different problem- still working my way through the possibilities. Anyway excellent video-very informative.

The creedmoor has chamber issues all brass is not perfect it just shows up more in the creedmoor.
A lot of army shooters use a 260 because of it...in time when word gets out someone will fix the problem

Thank you very much Mr Randy, I am a mechanical engineer here in Barcelona, Spain and I have been dedicated professionally has developed vehicles and all the tools needed to make each component. For a little over 20 years I have been fond of guns and now with fifty are my passion, unfortunately here I can not touch any weapon that is my property to correct some other defect... This type of task must be made by a master gunsmith, or someone like you here in Spain are very few and unfortunately already have a very advanced age... The alternative that many gun vendors have done is to pick up some mechanic to give them some basic course and get out of the precarious situation. I wish God had given me the opportunity to be able to dedicate those 25 years that I devoted to the automotive sector and have learned from you everything I could. Well is what there is, thanks for your channel and "In Dreams " I can imagine what it is to work with what really is your passion... A great greeting, Mr. Randy.

Lapua is right on. But that is why I anneal, full length size and check total length and neck, and head space for my gun. Too bad these companies don't care enough regarding safety.

I have heard about problems with the 6.5 crdmr, same thing you talked about in this video. I was going to get one, but i usually target shoot to just 600, and my 308W does a good enough job. Great video, and knowledge.
Too many unnecessary calibers out there today. If we stuck with what we had pre-2000 with maybe the exception of the Military's 6.8 Remington, the world would be a better place. My 0.002 worth.
Have shot 5 different factory ammo companys out of my 6.5 creedmoor ruger. I have never had a issue, almost 600 rounds and no issue. But mine is also only a year old. Maybe its older ones that have the issues.

Hi. Great video, your wisdom is appreciated very much.
I had a few Ruger RPR barrels made (Sammi spec for the 140ELD, and Lapua Scenar 136 otm), by JC Custom barrels, up in Canada. He made very similar comments to yours. He went through at least four reamers to find the correct throat finish, despite using reputable brands.
Now, I run the 136 OTM Scenars in Lapua Creedmoor brass,(from fire formed Lapua factory ammo), trimmed tp Sammi specs. CCI small primers, Vitavoui, at 2960fps muzzle velocity @ 20c, sea level. I headspace to spec with Forester Sammi go/no-gogauges, and jump one and a half thou to the lands.
The one issue I had with the Ruger RPR's, was the inconsistency of the bolt faces; of the six I've built, all of them required bolt face lapping of at least one and a half thousandth to true. (Ruger-Winchester 1-1 1/6-tight bolt face lapping jig, from PTG)
It's been my personal experience that my Lapua Creedmoor brass requires sizing & necking after every shot, trimming every 2nd use, annealing after every 3rd use, and doughnut trimming after the 7th or 8th use. Primer pockets are still holding on some brass after 19 reloads.
Hornady brass, regardless of where it was made, has always been very inconsistent for me too, in size, weight, volume, hardness & uniformity.
There is a great 6.5 already around it’s called the 6.5x 55 Swedish.
Ya but its not new with a fancy name and as we all know, that negatively effects ballistics in 2020 hahaha
Or 264 Win Mag if you really want to get things done with 6.5mm.
6.5x55 is a fine rifle I have one hunt anything I want
Awesome round a flat shooting I can hit 700 yards all day out of my AG42B
The 6.5x55 Swede is less desirable for a few reason...
1. Factory ammo is loaded on the weak side
2. Less available factory ammo, especially target/match loadings
3. US made brass is generally incorrect in dimensions and will only last 2-3 reloading
4. Long action for little velocity increase, and only when going over recommended load data
5. If you want anything other than a hunting barrel profile, it needs to be custom

I've never had any issues with my 6.5. I don't have this man's knowledge of firearms, but I've never had a deer complain about any shortcomings. And to me, that's what it's all about.
I have a 6.5, but it's a .260 Remington.
Wonderful deer round. But people think it's the best option for elk which isn't true

I experienced this with a CVA Cascade, chambered in .300 wm. 7 out a box of 20 wouldn't chamber. I contacted Winchester about their ammo, and while they would make good on replacing it. It was more trouble to me than it seemed worth it. I really feel like the quality control of just about everything in the current world we live in has majorly declined over time. Anyways thank you Randy for your time and sharing your knowledge.
I agree the manufacturer should be held accountable for there products for the price they should be perfect

should have went 6.5. this guy is talking about a super slim margin of guns and from a long time ago when the creedmoor was first being developed. I have a 6.5 and it has shot remington, hornady, winchester, just fine not a problem at all. he is the only guy that has said anything really bad about 6.5 and i think its because its so much better than .308 and hes upset it whoops a grandfather round. he also says 6.5 isnt a long distance hunting round but i watched a 6.5 take an elk down complete pass through at 600 yards. complete pass through! the elk was dead in under a minute and didnt run far at all. 6.5 is a fantastic round, he must make a bad gun and swears he doesnt and wants to blame somebody else. its sorta suspicious when hes blaming like every brass company there is and says that the brass sucks when i or anybody that bought factory ammunition that i know of has complained about. you can get factory loads that wont fit because they are ran hot and the bullet is a tad too long but i have not seen any other person make this claim against the 6.5 creedmoor.
@@ratedredneck96 exactly. Millions of rounds of 6.5 Creedmoor have gone off in the field and in PRS matches without issue. Nobody's talking about it because it's not an issue lol

Lots of these issues are not specific to 6.5 Creedmoor, but it is totally relevant, I have seen some of these issues in other chamber offerings, but mainly in newer case designs. Thanks for the video.

I bought and sold one of those things after it first came out. It lost its accuracy after no more than 200 rounds. Didn't take long for me to realize that these things are way too picky for my likings. Now I'm getting the skinny from the Real Gunsmith.

I just picked up a Kimber 84M mountain ascent and couldn't chamber hornady precision hunter eld-x rounds...could not figure out what was going on!! this isn't addressed on any forums or blogs, gun websites etc. thank you for this valuable insight, and what a catastrophe for the gun industry, indeed...and 5 years since your video the problem persists~. This will definitely be my first and last 6.5 Creedmoor I ever touch.

Great notes. +1 the throats are too long. I started handloading close to the lands assuming that would work best. Then I brought everything back to 2.820 and cut my groups sizes and velocity SDs down by a significant margin. I see no need for either a huge jump to the rifling or for seating the bullets that far out.
@kamphwagon1 What are you on about? He said nothing about SD not being important. He said that when he reduced his overall length that it reduced his group size and SD. Are you replying to something that is just flat out not there?

My Hornady Reloading Manual 9th edition calls for 2.800 " Maximum C.O.L.

Randy, thank you for this info. You are very talented and knowledgeable in your work. I purchased a 6.5 Creedmore Thompson Center Compass and bought Lapua brass. I have not experienced any of these issues. I learned my lesson on Hornady brass on 6.5 Grendel. Hornady brass is junk, I will not buy anymore. I buy PPU if Lapua doesn’t offer brass in the cartridge I need as I have many old military Mauser, Enfield’s, and Swiss rifles. I load over 25 different cartridges. I have experienced these issues in old 7.5mm Swiss (zero throat) and 7mm Mauser rifles with inconsistent head spacing. Thank you, I love your videos keep them coming.

Haven't had an issue with my Savage 110 precision shooting creedmoor...
I have a ruger in 6.5 creed and I have shot a number of different brands of ammo and never had a problem plus it's been super accurate for me. I dont see the problem there

It holds true with any brand of bullets. I have a 6.5 and I have a .308. I have to buy certain ammo for my .308 and my 6.5 it all depends on what I'm shooting that day and how far. I never understood why people bad mouth this caliber. Ever since 8t came on market it has been the step child of bullets.

The real .30 was the 30-40 Kraig 130gr at 2740 fps. Which is close to 6.5 creed.
Use what is legal and you choose. That's the great thing about America. All outdoorsman should be fighting the leftist full stun take your gun. Instead of each other.

Byjiggedy-do I just knew that I couldn't outdo my good old 308 ifn I was to get a 6.5 Creed more! I absolutely believe every word this experienced dedicated master gunsmith has spoken in this regard. Thank you for your expertise and honest report from your Long history of gunbuilding.

I've been watching your videos, and while I don't agree with everything, I appreciate your honesty and sharing your wisdom. It's very helpful. Having said that, myself and my father and brother have been shooting the 6.5 creed since about 2010. I've dealt with 4 different rifles from 4 different manufatures(the 4th being one that I built myself with a savage action) and many different lots of brass we've never experienced any such problems as you've stated here nor have I heard of it. Not saying it doesn't happen occasionally, but I don't think it's as big of an issue as your making it out to be. Just an opinion.
Thanks for taking time to respond, Garrett. Besides what I've observed, and heard from others. Currently in a store in FL they have had to return a Ruger Hawkeye and a Precision rifle that would not accept the new Hornady virgin brass, Hornady Amax 140 ammo and Federal Trophy Bonded ammo. They are still not to the bottom of it. It is not the norm, of course, as you and many others on here have pointed out. I felt it should be brought up. Thanks for your input, again, and good shooting!

I've had the exact same issue with 300WSM with Winchester brass more than once. Switch to norma not one problem reload 257bee, 300WSM, 30-06, 6.5 creedmoor, 243Win, 270win,

Randy, thank you for the vid! I was thinking of buying a rifle in this caliber, I do not reload, and I was not aware of this problem. Luckily, I have other rifles to shoot, while component manufacturers sort their quality control issues.

Wow! It's good to hear from someone that pays attention to the details! Remington 260 has been my favorite cartridge for quite awhile, although I was recently coerced into having a 6.5cm built. It sounds like I have some caliper work to do before hauling it to the range - thank you!
Hes not talking about modern brass, its a bunch of original test brass that were cut long and gave a few issues. The whole issue is he doesnt seem to account that bullets can be refined and redone, i bet his OG brass is nothing like what is being produced now. He needs to get back up to date and try it out again and see how many improvements have been made with the round. Hes old news, literally.

@@arkoutarkout3654 its where he says the brass measurements were inconsistent and differed from brand to brand, i was explaining why they were different sizes so people dont just run with this guys info and makes their decision based on what he said. He almost guaranteed just had old test brass where they were honing in the best shoulder and neck height and either doesnt want to acknowledge its not the final brass and hes trying to short change the round or he juat simply doesnt know what hes got and is still spreading false information blindly. 6.5 creedmoor was designed to be a precision cartridge for competition shooting, explain to me how any bullet manufacturer would allow that kind of lack of tollerance on a competition designed cartridge? And besides it wouldnt be the rifles fault and hes using it as a premis to say the 6.5 is a bad rifle.
Have 2 6.5s Kimber m 84 Hunter and a howa 1500 can't swap ammo ! Wtf been reloading 4 45 years this is a problem never experienced before glad somebody else has noticed
This happens to me in a few of my rifles. My Howa 7mm Rem Mag. Fire forms cases that don't fit my Mauser being the worst fit.
This is vital information if you are investing a lot in your hunting or competition rifle. This is just fantastic that such information is now well know. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and knowledge with the rest of the people out there.

VDC Firearms, I used a PTG gauge and a PTG reamer that I special ground with .260 length throat measured from the case mouth to .256 diameter taper of throat.

So glad I found this video. this has been driving me crazy. I have several different caliber rifles. I've had multiple rifles of the same caliber. at one point we had 3 6.5 creedmoors in the house. mine was a savage axis 2, my wife's is a savage axis and our sons is a ruger american predator. mine wouldnt load federal ammo. the bolt wouldnt close. my wife's seems to work fine with anything. my sons wont close with hornady ammo and remington core lokt is really tight when closing the bolt. it's been driving me crazy because no there caliber round has given me this much problem with loading rounds in to the gun

I'v shot both the 300wm and 6.5cm. I went with the 6.5cm. If someone can do a correct build, i would go with the 6.5. Both have long range capabilities and both should have enough energy for most applications. The 6.5 will have less recoil if on the same weight gun. If your looking for a 18lbs bench gun it isn't a big issue, but a 8lbs rifle that you have to carry in the field, there is going to be a bit of recoil difference.
Comparing 300 win mag to 6.5cm is apples to oranges. One is a magnum round and the other isn't. One comes with magnum recoil and the other doesn't. They don't even shoot the same weight bullets. 300 win mag doesn't have a long enough neck. It was flawed when they released it and it has remained flawed. I have no idea how you got your choices down to those two cartridges. That's like saying "Ive decided to either buy a Ferrari with a major engine flaw or a Ford f150 with a 300 straight six". The two can't even be compared.
Man your a wealth of knowledge -seems as though the degra6of societal norms is even reaching into what should be a tightly controlled and monitored industry. Building a 6.5 cm as I watched this, I'll be checking all new brass from this point forward.

Your video was interesting. I have two Savage 6.5 Creedmoors and have been using Hornady Brass and have had no issues. I know though if you got a bad reamer when you ordered so could others. I hope not to find these problems while shooting my 6.5 Creedmoors. BTW they both shoot great, fine groups under .5 in at 100 yd. I reload myself because most factory ammo just does not shoot all that great consistently.
Interesting. I have 4, 6.5CMs, custom built and commercially available, none of have issues you suggest. I'd pay more attention if you'd specify your reamer dimensions.

This reminds me of the time i bought a early 6.8 spc ar15 used and had to perform a eugene stoner head bang to eject the cartridge. I bought silver state ammunition horandy and other brands. The barrel that came with it was a lemon so i replaced it with a stag arms barrel and still had the same issues. Amazingly American eagle cycled fine along with handloads. I sold it.

Y’all can keep your 6.5 creedmoor I’ll stick with my .257 weatherby mag it’s just as accurate and flat shooting, but harder hitting and been around long enough all the bugs have been worked out.
.257... great caliber. Now let's talk about bullet selections. I had a .257 Roberts, and a .25-06, loved both of them, and took deer very effectively with them. I have taken one elk with the .25-06 with a 120 gr Barnes X. But, I think that it is living on a the edge a bit to put hopes in a 120 gr bullet for anything larger than whitetail deer. The 6.5 has a bullet selection between 95 and 160 gr and out of the lowly Creedmoor, the 129 gr Hornady bullet is like Magic on whitetail, with the options to hunt elk with a bit more peace of mind.
@@Adoratek I like the 110 grain Nosler acubond for whitetail in my .257. I hunt Texas primarily it wide open and shots can fall between 50 to 450 yards and in my rifle that bullet works very well in those ranges. For anything larger than deer I use a 7mm rem mag 160 grain Federal Trophy Bonded.
I have a 6.5 cm and a weatherby .257 mag and I have to say.... the 6.5 outperforms on game. Night and day!
@@Adoratek "Whiskey" Chamberlain took 15 consecutive elk with a .243 with 100 gr bullets. According to "Grits" Gresham, He never took a shot at greater than moderate range and unless the Elk was standing still. Range and bullet placement is everything, I have to conclude.
Funny but I had the same problem with my 308 Henry long range. I used all factory loads, and a few manufactures cartridges didn't function properly in my rifle. Sent it back to Henry. They worked on it and I have it now. Verdict is still not out. Will be testing it out soon. Thanks for this video. Food for thought.
This is very interesting! I ended up buying a Remingotn barreld action in 6.5 creedmore i Bought 200 brass lapua and shoot about 500 rounds works like a charm but this is all now! Your video is 3 years old I wonder if I’m just lucky now or if they fixed the problem. My COAL is little less than 2.800 my jump is over 100thou also due to mag but It shoot 0.75” groups with cheap hornady bullets and Less than 0.5” with lapua bullets

John Goode, thanks for asking. Some brass is so long in headspace that the die won't correct it without modifying the die. And factory ammo not fitting in various makes and models of rifles is not a die issue. If someone has dies they are not too apt to buy factory ammo to use. If they are buying factory ammo they aren't too apt to have dies.
you should ALWAYS pre-gauge all your brass and stay within the cartridge maximum COL dimensions. I never fire un-gauged ammo !
If in doubt, run the brass through your resizer. Yes, it's an extra step. But, with pre loaded ammo, this may be an issue.

The Real Gunsmith excellent point and I know that Bolt Action Reloading channel had a problem where his Lee die wouldn’t bump the shoulder because it bottomed out on the shell plate. Die issue? Or reamer issue? Hmm. Not coincidentally, Hornady die didn’t have this issue.
My Forster sizer in 6.5 has worked perfectly. Tiny gap off the shell plate gives 0.002 shoulder bump and 0.004 neck tension.
Alrighty then. I wasn't so hot on the idea of some new-fangled mess anyhow.

I myself and about 2 dozen other people i personally knowhave been shooting a 6.5 creedmoor for about the last 5 yrs. We have tested all manufactured ammunition and have never experienced what you're talking about. All factory ammo has chambered flawlessly and have all shot extremely accurate. Can u please make another video demonstrating this problem? Show us.

I'm a machinist my self and honestly first you should always check tooling so possibly there was issues with the reamer at the time being a new cartridge years ago with other cartridges fairly similar it's easy to see how things could have gotten crazy also 10 years ago was a depression , quality control was not at it's peak neather was building materials like still and brass. Let's be realistic the creedmoor is a great round I have one and that man I see not one on the bench.And I know alot of older guys who for whatever reason knock the creeds left and right and talk up older style cartridges specially the 260 remember.........my take on this .....inspect tooling ,inspect brass ,if your gonna custom build and load ,check.check.check.check. be your own quality control system don't blame the aliens.....my 6.5 is the most accurate thing I've shot next to a Lazer gun.never had any issues with anything other than boredom of hitting the target .

I own a browning x bolt medallion 300 win mag, was thinking of buying a 6.5 creedmoor but no more. Will probably pick up a 7 mm rem mag. I guess it's good to stick to the proven legendary cartridge and will have no issues.

Those who have left comments in disagreement seem to do so either from not listening to the entire video, not hearing if they did, or in disbelief and think I am not smart enough to know what I am talking about. I think I poked a sacred cow. ;) And just because someone hasn't had a problem, doesn't mean there hasn't been. I know what I know. I am not going to worry about the detractors. The overwhelming response has been very positive and I a grateful and humbled. We totally appreciate all of the "Likes" "Subscribes" "Shares" and comments. Positive or not. We've only blocked one commentor for not only being rude in his disagreement, but nasty. Nasty won't fly.
The guy is probably correct on the issues he has encountered. I don't think it as wide spread or as big of problem as he leads on, and that is where i think some of the dislikes have come from.
I'll stick with the old tried and true 308 Winchester, it seems to have worked very well for many years.
.30 cal for me, .30-06, .308, Smaller lighter bullets don't impress me. Yet, I still want to take a deer with my .45 Colt Redhawk....
Glad I ran across this video, I was planning on purchasing a Bergara B-14 HMR Pro in a 6.5 CM. Looks like I'll be looking for a more consistent/reliable round.

well, my savage 11 with is varmint profile barrel in 6.5cm is 1/2 moa out of the box with most factory ammo. seems to like anything in the 140g flavor. dont know if its luck or not but i've yet to ever buy an inaccurate rifle made by savage.
nathan campbell I can say the same about my Savage hog hunter. Out of the box, I was getting light primer strikes until I upgraded the factory 28lb striker spring to 32lb. It’s a sub MOA rifle with 168gr FGMM ammo. Not bad for an inexpensive Savage.
I just ran into this problem today, federal ammo would not load into my rifle or my friends rifle. The shoulder was not pushed back enough and hitting in the chamber

I never had much interest in 6.5cm as I'm a 308 guy. Recently I traded for a Mossberg patriot 6.5cm. It's a very cheap rifle but I was absolutely impressed with the accuracy of this rifle! 143gr ammo will shoot 1/2 to 3/4 inches at 100 until the barrel gets hot then 1 1/2. I will try it on deer and hogs this year. My personal limit is 200 yards. 6.5cm should be good at that range. We will see.
A .308 is actually very large for deer. I have killed a mess of deer with my .243 hand loads .85 gr BT bullets. They always exit the deer and drop them dead. Energy and velocity should be deadly out to 400 yards. A 6.5 should be affective out to 500 or 600 yards.

The 6.5CM reminds me of the multiple WSM's that came out 20 years ago. Yeah, the 270Win was gonna be obsolete soon... Nope, and the same thing holds true for the 6.5CM, especially when more and more folks learn about the issues being discussed by Randy. My motto is that until a chambering has passed 50-75 years of continuous production and use, I'll wait to hear the results. The WSM's faded and you can pick up those rifles for pennies on the dollar nowadays. The 6.5CM has a bunch of paid writers singing praises to their readers but next year, it'll be another "perfect" caliber. All my rifles are chambered in older rounds that have been around and are still going the distance. If the 6.5CM if still selling like hotcakes in 20 years, call me.

@@BoT-mr8rw Locally, I know of 3 270WSM M70's that have been in shops for a year at $475-600 and a 325WSM that's been in a pawnshop for 3yrs. It started at the low price of $995, because it was a "Rare and collectable Winchester!" It's now sitting there with a $495 tag... WSM's might still be the hot ticket in some parts of the country but not everywhere. Everyone here still uses the standard 30-06 or 270. The WSM ammo is still full priced though!
Wouldn't want to make any predictions for the 6.5CR but all the writers have talked it up and the local shops seem to be able to move them for now. I think they'll wind up doing better than the WSM's just because the entire focus is all on the single caliber instead of the multiple calibers issued at once by Winchester. Winchester has been known to make some colossal marketing goofs from time to time. Best of luck for your favorite caliber.
