- North Korea is one of the worst dictatorships in the world. A closed country to which foreigners rarely gain entry. Every April 15th, the entire population is required to celebrate the birthday of deceased president Kim il Sung, founder of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. After his death, his son, Kim Jong il, came to power, but declared himself ’General’, and appointed his father ‘Eternal President’. Kim il Sung is therefore the only dead president still in power. The April 15th Celebrations, known as the ’Spring Festival’ is an excellent propaganda opportunity for the regime to showcase its cultural accomplishments and demonstrate its power. In a country where a third of the population don’t have enough to eat, the state spends obscene amounts of money organising these festivities, which have only one purpose: to celebrate the power and modernity of North Korea and the greatness of its two leaders, father and son.
It is also an opportunity for the most closed country in the world to open its doors just enough for us to peer in and admire its artists, performing in theatres which will spend the rest of the year empty. In this living museum of communism, the population wakes up every morning to the sound of loud speakers, singing the presidents’ praises. Here, the role of the arts is to educate the masses. The musicians are soldiers, and North Korea is a giant barrack.
‘This is a journey into the last bastion of Stalinism, offering rare insight into life in a strange and terrifying totalitarian ideology usually hidden from the outside world.
This documentary was first released in 2009.

This is like a neverending episode of the Twilight Zone
It's basically 'It's a Good Life', except instead of everyone living in fear of a little boy it's a short fat guy
I've watched a LOT of videos about the DPRK. It just hit me that I've never seen a pregnant woman in any of them. Unless of course that as soon as a woman starts to show, they have to wear one of those bell shaped dresses.
This is old from the 90s
90's or now.. some of the most hysterically dangerous creatures that walk this earth....Harry Truman should have settled their kimchi in 1950...

They talk of socialism but they don't really understand what that is. It's so sad.
Yeah, this is a dictatorship that was sold as socialism. In socialism a dynastic leader wouldn't have an entire branch of the government devoted to raising billions of dollars a year for his personal, and very lavish, expenses. Socialist ideas are the selling point, but not the reality.
No. That's exactly what socialism leads to. This is not a bug. It is a feature
41:20 you played just enough of the outro song to drive me nuts thinking of who does it. It's something from Portishead or maybe RJD2 ahhhhhh
North Korea is the twilight zone
I couldn't sing those lyrics without laughing.
It’s like a horror movie. I am going to have nightmares about this.

Forced to cry smile clap cheer , all staged for his ego and his boring life
The people do what the government tells them to do or they die they can literally be killed because they don't shed enough tears or it doesn't look like they're crying hard enough or they stepped the wrong way or they make a mistake so this is most likely not something they really want to do they're being forced
The people are held hostage like animals in cages they can't even travel abroad and need to have permission to enter the capital. Also it's only the rich who lives life while people like us in the country side starve and die their lives are so unfair and depressing.
They are expected to do things with precision like a well-oiled machine, like robots.
@@jilianemorales2074 EXACTLY,just following orders like a robot without question fortunately not everybody's a fool and know so they carefully plan their escape risking everything in 2001 33k people escaped.
it is surreal for me..i will never be in such a place
This a very valuable documentary. Thanks for sharing. ✨
Was there a song called: yeah I kidnap an actress and director so what?
That would be kim jong il his father as well as one of history's worst dictators. As a child his mother died and his father kim il sung never paid much attention while the korean war raged on so. Because he never learnt the difference between right and wrong or yes and no he felt he could do whatever including kidnapping people from the south and japan. If the country was democratic then they wouldn't of been a treat or corrupt they would of been bigger and better like japan and Germany.
I read a book about them. It was fascinating! I think the story that stuck with me the most is how the wife of a privileged man had reported someone for corruption, as one theoretically should in a supposedly socialist government. However, instead, she was called out and humiliated in front of everyone at a gathering. The husband begged the leader to let him be the one to punish his wife, then shot her dead in front of everyone. He was willing to execute his own wife in front of a room full of people in order to remain in the leader's good graces. That's how brainwashed and fearful these people are.
@@DimaRakesah Yes cause the country is so corrupt life is unfair and depressing ever since the day dictatorship took over in 1948.It's a good thing we didn't let them win during the Korean war otherwise the south would've suffered all these years as well🤦🏾♂️
The whole country is a crap hole
how interesting, while this dude is forcing people to worship him like some god, "an eternal president", he s burning in hell for eternity.
These people are empty lifeless souls, like puppets, living solely for the purpose of worshipping their dictator. Very sad, very disturbing.
I was unaware spring visited the dprk
They have all drank the Kool-Aid.
To be fair, just like the people who truly drank the kool aid, the people don't have a choice in it. They are forced to live this way.
18:26 North Korea has some beautiful girls. Imagine if they were allowed to do their hair up and all that business. They are missing out by not letting them wear makeup or do their hair.
Korean Kardashians lol
This comment is gross. These poor people are living in a country with so few rights and you want to make them into little dolls that you can enjoy for aesthetic pleasure? There are so many more important things in a person's life than their looks.
@@DimaRakesah I've yet to find a culture that doesn't revere beauty, whatever their beauty standards are. Shrug.
@@DimaRakesah Shut Up
These poor people, being tortured on a daily basis.
It is interesting that the North Korean desire not to incorporate any Western influences seemed to have overlooked dress. Also, that electric guitar has a very familiar Western shape.
Sick how people can be brainwashed
Try the UK.
Most of the aren't brainwashed at all
They know what's going on, just cannot get out of it, like rabbits in small cage.
They know more than you think
@@ShivaismysaviourNot everybody's stupid some people know what's going on by either escaping to south Korea or china or by watching Kdrama in secret.

Lady traffic light. Talk about a person doing a machine's job.
Chunyanan Chegoryu Donji Kaesana
North Korea reminds me of a religious denomination in the Philippines called Iglesia ni Cristo.
The wife that was talking about her and her husband... She said she works in her DREAM while her HUSBAND works on CONCRETE. She said it clearly. Such a sad COUNTRY.

Their side of the stories ok😊
Excellent festival. Very nice city.

@@thefreestylefrEaK Vulgar and ridiculous like all anti communists.
Nauseating...poor people
That's what you call crap on a crapper!
Don't you just love those propaganda posters drawn by the children of DPRK, they always seem to be cartoon characters!!!!
The singers, dancers, orchestra and choral are world class.
Like puppets on strings, dangling from the dictators fingers.
I actually saw Toby Keith perform at this celebration a few years ago, so yes, North Korea is worse than I thought.
Omg😅all the things and even the flower name after their mentally ill general kim...if i have the power i will set the people free from their country..
Soon these girls will have a husband thanks to the Marshall!
The people themselves are marvellous. They are enduring and resilient. I admire them but it stops at that. That regime is run by one Family. Cannot in any way benefit the greater good… ever! The world’s most dangerous cult? And personally… having grown up with more freedom of expression than most, I will NEVER relinquish my freedom without a fight.
It look like back of 1930
I find the music and dance styles particularly fascinating. Incredibly dated, overly controlled, militaristic and lacking a sense of authenticity or personal artistic styles in any way. Yet it is presented as if it is the best thing in the world. You get the sense than nothing about it will change. You could watch a "rising star" singer from the 80's or 2020 and not see a difference other than the quality of the video and audio and maybe a flashier stage for them to sing on. No one is allowed to innovate on the arts. No personal style is detectable. Even the costumes do not change. The hanbok is always the same "ballgown" like style. The hair, the makeup, everything. The expression in the art is sucked out of it and leaves this performative husk that is mesmerisingly inhuman. It reminds me of the traffic light women. They look like broken dolls stuck repeating these strange movements until their battery runs out. The people are just the batteries that keeps the dolls moving.
The era is gone!!!!
Chandaril bandaril
The general forced himself on that poor singer after and she begged for more it was reported
😵💫
That is such a disgusting thing for people to say. That poor women has no choice in anything, what a horrible way to talk about a victim.

Opportunities for what, exactly?
I love and admire the political view of North Korea ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It's a cult, a nightmarish cult, it's ran through fear and torture, through concentration camps.
This isn’t a communist country. Its absurd to expect North Koreans to follow a concept alien to their culture and which contradicts the Confucian values of loyalty, hierarchy and social harmony. North Korea is a country where everything runs counter to Western concepts like freedom, individualism and egalitarianism. They’ve no place there and if you tried to explain it to them, they wouldn’t understand. How other people live isn’t for them and the Supreme Leader, the good father of the nation, knows best.
Kim Jong Un doesn’t follow DPRK concepts, either. Glutton.
