      @@engleharddinglefester4285 Let's say I made a great start at it. When I started getting higher up on the roof, I found out that the plywood under the shingles was totally rotted out so I ended up having to hire someone to replace the entire roof. Otherwise, I could have done it myself with no trouble. My lines weren't perfectly straight, but they were very spot on. The shed police did not come calling to tell me what a shoddy job I was doing. Overall, I was very pleased with what I was able to do.

    As someone who is currently on their fourth year of roofing, I would suggest not following the drip edge instructions on this video. A simple rule for doing and exterior work, roofing included is "whatever's above goes on top" by having your paper under your eave drip edge any water that gets under your shingles will run down your paper and get caught inside/under the drip edge rather than going over and into the eave. Please do all metal edges first, also for your gable (side) drip edge, it should also be placed on top of your eave (bottom) drip edge.

      Actually depends on code in the state you are living in. Northern states put it first, but I believe hurricane states put it after because it helps from high winds getting under the paper. Just go with whatever your state recommends or if it's your own roof roll with whatever you feel like as it's going to be you yourself having to deal with whatever issues arise later. To be honest I live in a hurricane state and I put my drip edges over my paper on my shed that I built 3 yrs ago and during a direct hit from hurricane IDA with gusts over 170 mph I didn't lose a single shingle on my shed 16X16 and no water was able to get under the paper. So basically I am satisfied with my own decision at the time of putting on the shingles. 🤷

      I’m not a roofer but I have roofed, with the self-adhesive ice/water shield. I think it’s vinyl drip edge first, then adhesive ice/water shield up to or slightly over the edge or overhang, then the starter shingle 1/2” past that, covered flush by shingles. Hope I’m right!!

    • @ThrowbackPassions
      @ThrowbackPassions Год назад +1

      I think the only exception is if you double layer one under the drip and one over. Other then that I agree. Water and ice should go over drip and the underlayment should go under the drip of the rakes

    Why wouldn't you put the drip edge that runs length wise under the paper? It seems that if water did get behind the shingles, it would run to the drip edge and go under it not over it.

    • @Mike-pj1kv
      @Mike-pj1kv 4 года назад +10

      That's correct. The bottom edge only, the paper goes over the drip edge. On the sides the paper goes under the drip edge.

      When he cut the drip edge ends, the gable side should overlap the soffit side. He has the soffit side overlapping the gable. That will cause water to leak underneath.

    Love your channel, thanks for all the great videos! I'm not a roofer, but I learned a few things while working on mine that seem like best practices:
    6:35 carpet blades cut a lot better than normal ones
    5:25 I agree w/ the other comments about leaving the tar strip on the starter course. The nails will hold it at first, but over time I think it'll cause unnecessary wear. It doesn't take any extra time/money to leave it, so why not? You can also buy pre-cut starters, which saves a lot of time for folks who don't already have scrap lying around.
    20:34 Placing the ridge cap so that the flaps aren't exposed to the prevailing will make them last longer. You can also do a starter cap w/ tar strip to hold down the ones on the edges, just like the regular courses.
    22:35 Covering those final nails w/ roofing cement should help prevent leaks.

    also I would suggest using a 5 cut stagger. it gets rid of the need for this weird overlapping stagger he uses. the cuts are as follows. cut one shingle in half, thats your Halfer, then cut one shingle at 6-8 inches, then cut another shingle in a middle length between the small cut you just made and the halfer that you have, probably around 12-14 inches. then you will have a 6 inch, 12 inch, halfer, the cutoff from your 12 inch, and then the cut off for you 6 inch. that is five shingle lengths. put your second halfer aside and use it for youyr next stagger/ladder starter. then its just biggest to smallest, full shingle then your 6 inch cutoff piece etc. until you get to the 6 incher. it will eliminate the need to have to lift up your old shingle and fit the next under it. you will need to go across your bottom to bring up your next row before you can continue higher. Remember 6 inches is the minimum for shingles to be together. if you have a small or large cut and the space/gap between your shingles is 5 or less inches you will need to either skip that shingle in the stagger or cut another to replace it. also one last thing, for your last cap/ridge cap piece, turn your factory edge to the outside so that when looking up from the bottom it is a clean factory line rather than you cut line, you can alos snap a chalk line across your ridge to keep it straight. Thanks for reading, hope you have a great day

    I’m building my wife’s dream pavilion (a solid roof over posts). We have talked about corrugated metal but the shingles appear to be cheaper, about half the cost. So I’m here, next task figure out the roofing. I have 2 valleys too. I think I prefer the look of shingles.

    The reason visualization is so powerful is because as you create pictures in your mind of seeing yourself with what it is you want, you are generating thoughts and feelings of having it now.

    Doesn’t the drip edge on the eave go below the underlayment?? Over it on the rake?

      @@Polarbear5353 Actually no, it only goes over the felt on the rake....under the felt on the eave...except in FL. It's the only state where under the felt is acceptable on the eave.

      Jeff S you’re right- I actually have a book that speaks different from my AAMA CERTIFICATION. But clearly when I look online- it is different. Thanks for the correction....

    Yo fixer, you got any tips advice/ video for handling perfectly pyramidal hip roofs or top ridge type hip roofs (garages) where it comes to smart strategy for shingles at / over / from the four ridges for a good install or less waste or good look? GAF instructions and GAFs yt video makes me think theres some special sauce missing from their instructions for those points im wondering about.

    Do you have to cut them? With artitecual shingles can you just nail them? If dont care about pattern

    Great job with this video. Very easy to follow and understand. Just have 1 question. Do you need to cover the last 2 nails with tar or flex seal on the last ridge cap piece?

    • @emailjimsylvester
      @emailjimsylvester 2 года назад

      I definitely would. If not they'll rust and could eventually leak.
